Energy deposition on nuclear emulsion by slow recoil ions for directional dark matter searches
Abstract: The electronic energy deposited on nuclear emulsions due to C ions of 5 -- 200~keV and Kr ions of 5 -- 600~keV are evaluated and compared with those due to fast ions for design and construction of fine grain nuclear emulsion for directional dark matter searches. Nuclear quenching factors and the electronic LET (linear energy transfer), the specific electronic energy deposited along the ion track,… ▽ More

Properties for liquid argon scintillation for dark matter searches
Abstract: The scintillation yield for recoil Ar ions of 5 to 250 keV energy in liquid argon have been evaluated for direct dark matter searches. Lindhard theory is taken for estimating nuclear quenching. A theoretical model based on a biexcitonic diffusion-reaction mechanism is performed for electronic (scintillation) quenching. The electronic LET (linear energy transfer) is evaluated and used to obtain the… ▽ More

Cornu's spiral in the Fresnel regime studied using ultrasound: A phase study
Abstract: A simple experimental technique for measuring the phase and amplitude of diffracting ultrasound wave [A. Hitachi and M. Takata, Am. J. Phys. 78, 678 (2010)] has been applied to diffracting objects with straight edges as a demonstration of the Cornu spiral. Babinet's principle is studied observing the ultrasound field behind a slit and a complementary strip obstacle and is verified directly by comp… ▽ More

Babinet's principle in the Fresnel regime studied using ultrasound
Abstract: The diffraction of ultrasound by a circular disk and an aperture of the same size have been investigated as a demonstration of Babinet's principle in the Fresnel regime. The amplitude and the phase of diffracted ultrasonic waves have been measured, and a graphical treatment of the results is performed by simply drawing vectors (phasors) in the complex plane. The results verify Babinet's principl… ▽ More

Bragg-like curve for dark matter searches; binary gases
Abstract: The directional detection of low-energy recoil ions can provide strong possibility for observation of dark matter in the Galaxy. Quenching factors for 5-200 keV recoil ions in N2, CO2, CF4 and CS2 gases are evaluated and Bragg-like curves, the electronic energy deposition as a function of the projected range, are presented. The Bragg-like curves are intended for directional search for the dark m… ▽ More

Measurement of the refractive index and attenuation length of liquid xenon for its scintillation light
Abstract: The attenuation length and refractive index of liquid xenon for intrinsic scintillation light (178nm) have been measured in a single experiment. The value obtained for attenuation length is 364 +- 18 mm. The refractive index is found to be 1.69 +- 0.02. Both values were measured at a temperature of 170 +- 1 K.

Detection of Scintillation Light of Liquid Xenon with a LAAPD
Abstract: First observation of liquid xenon scintillation due to alpha-particles and gamma-rays with a large area avalanche photodiode immersed in the liquid is reported. An energy resolution of 10% (FWHM) and a coincidence time resolution of less then 1 ns (FWHM) were measured with 5.5 MeV alpha-particles and 511 keV gamma-rays, respectively. The quantum efficiency of the photodiode for xenon scintillati… ▽ More
