The new APD-Based Readout of the Crystal Barrel Calorimeter -- An Overview

Abstract: The Crystal Barrel is an electromagnetic calorimeter consisting of 1380 CsI(Tl) scintillators, and is currently installed at the CBELSA/TAPS experiment where it is used to detect decay products from photoproduction of mesons. The readout of the Crystal Barrel has been upgraded in order to integrate the detector into the first level of the trigger and to increase its sensitivity for neutral final s… ▽ More The Crystal Barrel is an electromagnetic calorimeter consisting of 1380 CsI(Tl) scintillators, and is currently installed at the CBELSA/TAPS experiment where it is used to detect decay products from photoproduction of mesons. The readout of the Crystal Barrel has been upgraded in order to integrate the detector into the first level of the trigger and to increase its sensitivity for neutral final states. The new readout uses avalanche photodiodes in the front-end and a dual back-end with branches optimized for energy and time measurement, respectively. An FPGA-based cluster finder processes the whole hit pattern within less than 100 ns. The important downside of APDs -- the temperature dependence of their gain -- is handled with a temperature stabilization and a compensating bias voltage supply. Additionally, a light pulser system allows the APDs' gains to be measured during beamtimes. △ Less

Polarization observables in double neutral pion photoproduction

Abstract: Measurements of target asymmetries and double-polarization observables for the reaction $γがんまp\to pπぱい^0πぱい^0$ are reported. The data were taken with the CBELSA/TAPS experiment at the ELSA facility (Bonn University) using the Bonn frozen-spin butanol (C$_4$H$_9$OH) target, which provided transversely polarized protons. Observed systematic differences in the branching ratios for decays of $N^*$ and $Δでるた^*$ resonances are attributed to the internal structure of these excited nucleon states. Resonances which can be assigned to SU(6)$\times$O(3) two-oscillator configurations show larger branching ratios to intermediate states with non-zero intrinsic orbital angular momenta than resonances assigned to one-oscillator configurations. △ Less

The existence of this structure cannot be co… ▽ More The reaction $γがんまp \rightarrow p πぱい^0 ηいーた$ has been studied with the CBELSA/TAPS detector at the electron stretcher accelerator ELSA in Bonn for incident photon energies from threshold up to 3.1 GeV. This paper has been motivated by the recently claimed observation of a narrow structure in the M$_{Nηいーた}$ invariant mass distribution at a mass of 1678 MeV/$c^2$. The existence of this structure cannot be confirmed in the present work. Instead, for E$_γがんま$ = 1400 - 1500 MeV and the cut M$_{pπぱい^0} \le 1190 $ MeV/$c^2$ a statistically significant structure in the M$_{pηいーた}$ invariant mass distribution near 1700 MeV/$c^2$ is observed with a width of $Γがんま\approx 35$ MeV/$c^2$ while the mass resolution is $σしぐま_{res}$ = 5 MeV/$c^2$. Increasing the incident photon energy from 1420 to 1540 MeV this structure shifts in mass from $\approx$ 1700MeV/c$^2$ to $\approx$ 1725 MeV/$c^2$; the width increases to about 50 MeV/$c^2$ and decreases thereafter. The cross section associated with this structure reaches a maximum of $\approx$ 100 nb around E$_γがんま \approx$ 1490 MeV (W $\approx $ 1920 MeV), which coincides with the $p a_0$ threshold. Three scenarios are discussed which might be the origin of this structure in the M$_{pηいーた}$ invariant mass distribution. The ηいーた'-carbon potential at low meson momenta

Abstract: The production of $ηいーた^\prime$ mesons in coincidence with forward-going protons has been studied in photon-induced reactions on $^{12}$C and on a liquid hydrogen (LH$_2$) target for incoming photon energies of 1.3-2.6 GeV at the electron accelerator ELSA. The $ηいーた^\prime$ mesons have been identified via the $ηいーた^\prime\rightarrow πぱい^0 πぱい^0ηいーた\rightarrow 6 γがんま$ decay registered with the CBELSA/TAPS detector sy… ▽ More The production of $ηいーた^\prime$ mesons in coincidence with forward-going protons has been studied in photon-induced reactions on $^{12}$C and on a liquid hydrogen (LH$_2$) target for incoming photon energies of 1.3-2.6 GeV at the electron accelerator ELSA. The $ηいーた^\prime$ mesons have been identified via the $ηいーた^\prime\rightarrow πぱい^0 πぱい^0ηいーた\rightarrow 6 γがんま$ decay registered with the CBELSA/TAPS detector system. Coincident protons have been identified in the MiniTAPS BaF$_2$ array at polar angles of $2^{\circ} \le θしーた_{p} \le 11^{\circ}$. Under these kinematic constraints the $ηいーた^\prime$ mesons are produced with relatively low kinetic energy ($\approx$ 150 MeV) since the coincident protons take over most of the momentum of the incident-photon beam. For the C-target this allows the determination of the real part of the $ηいーた^\prime$-carbon potential at low meson momenta by comparing with collision model calculations of the $ηいーた^\prime$ kinetic energy distribution and excitation function. Fitting the latter data for $ηいーた^\prime$ mesons going backwards in the center-of-mass system yields a potential depth of V = $-$(44 $\pm$ 16(stat)$\pm$15(syst)) MeV, consistent with earlier determinations of the potential depth in inclusive measurements for average $ηいーた^\prime$ momenta of $\approx$ 1.1 GeV/$c$. Within the experimental uncertainties, there is no indication of a momentum dependence of the $ηいーた^\prime$-carbon potential. The LH$_2$ data, taken as a reference to check the data analysis and the model calculations, provide differential and integral cross sections in good agreement with previous results for $ηいーた^\prime$ photoproduction off the free proton. △ Less

Furthermore, data obtained with a longitudinally polarized, deuterated butanol target and a circularly polarized photon beam were analyzed to determine the double polarization observable $E$. Both data sets together were also used to extract the helicity dependent cross sections $σしぐま_{1/2}$ and $σしぐま_{3/2}$. From the measured meson momentum distributions the momentum dependence of the transparency ratio has been determined for both mesons. Within a Glauber analysis the in-medium $ωおめが$ and $ηいーた^\prime$ widths and the corresponding absorption cross sections have been deduced as a function of the meson momentum. The results are compared to recent theoretical predictions for the in-medium $ωおめが$ width and $ηいーた^\prime$-N absorption cross sections. The energy dependence of the imaginary part of the $ωおめが$- and $ηいーた^\prime$-nucleus optical potential has been extracted. The finer binning of the present data compared to the existing data allows a more reliable extrapolation towards the production threshold. The modulus of the imaginary part of the $ηいーた^\prime$ nucleus potential is found to be about three times smaller than recently determined values of the real part of the $ηいーた^\prime$-nucleus potential, which makes the $ηいーた^\prime$ meson a suitable candidate for the search for meson-nucleus bound states. For the $ωおめが$ meson, the modulus of the imaginary part near threshold is comparable to the modulus of the real part of the potential. As a consequence, only broad structures can be expected which makes the observation of $ωおめが$ mesic states very difficult experimentally. △ Less

Abstract: The excitation function and momentum distribution of ηいーた' mesons have been measured in photoproduction off 93^Nb in the energy range of 1.2-2.9 GeV. The experiment has been performed with the combined Crystal Barrel and MiniTAPS detector system, using tagged photon beams from the ELSA electron accelerator. Information on the sign and magnitude of the real part of the ηいーた'-Nb potential has been extract… ▽ More The excitation function and momentum distribution of ηいーた' mesons have been measured in photoproduction off 93^Nb in the energy range of 1.2-2.9 GeV. Instabilities of layers of deposited molecules on chemically stripe patterned substrates: Ridges vs. drops

Abstract: A mesoscopic continuum model is employed to analyse the transport mechanisms and structure formation during the redistribution stage of deposition experiments where organic molecules are deposited on a solid substrate with periodic stripe-like wettability patterns. Transversally invariant ridges located on the more wettable stripes are identified as very important transient states and their linear… ▽ More A mesoscopic continuum model is employed to analyse the transport mechanisms and structure formation during the redistribution stage of deposition experiments where organic molecules are deposited on a solid substrate with periodic stripe-like wettability patterns. Transversally invariant ridges located on the more wettable stripes are identified as very important transient states and their linear stability is analysed. It is found that there exist two different instability modes that result (i) at large ridge volume in the formation of bulges that spill from the more wettable stripes onto the less wettable bare substrate and (ii) at small ridge volume in the formation of small droplets located on the more wettable stripes. These predictions are confirmed by direct numerical simulations of the fully nonlinear evolution equation for two-dimensional substrates. In addition, the influence of different transport mechanisms during redistribution is investigated focusing on the cases of convective transport with no-slip at the substrate, transport via diffusion in the film bulk and via diffusion at the film surface. In particular, it is shown that the transport process does neither influence the linear stability thresholds nor the sequence of morphologies observed in the time simulation, but only the ratio of the time scales of the different process phases. △ Less

Both measurements cover the full solid angle. The observables $E$ and $G$ are highly sensitive to the contribution of baryon resonances, with $E$ acting as a helicity filter in the $s$-channel. The new results indicate significant $s$-channel resonance contributions together with contributions from $t$-channel exchange processes. A partial wave analysis reveals strong contributions from the partial waves with spin-parity $J^P=3/2^+, 5/2^+$, and $3/2^-$. △ Less

The $πぱい^0 γがんま$ pairs from decays of bound or quasi-free $ωおめが$-mesons have been measured with the CBELSA/TAPS detector system in coincidence with protons registered in the MiniTAPS forward array. Structures in the total energy distribution of the $πぱい^0 γがんま$ pairs, which would indicate the population and decay of bound $ωおめが~^{11}$B states, are not observed. The $πぱい^0 γがんま$ cross section of 0.3 nb/MeV/sr observed in the bound state energy regime between -100 and 0 MeV may be accounted for by yield leaking into the bound state regime because of the large in-medium width of the $ωおめが$-meson. A comparison of the measured total energy distribution with calculations suggests the real part $V_0$ of the $ωおめが~^{11}$B potential to be small and only weakly attractive with $V_0(ρろー=ρろー_0) = -15\pm$ 35(stat) $\pm$20(syst) MeV in contrast to some theoretical predictions of attractive potentials with a depth of 100 - 150 MeV. △ Less

Extended Kramers-Moyal analysis applied to optical trapping

If the sampling interval of a measured time series is too low, systematic errors occur in the analysis results. These errors are labeled as finite time effects in the literature. In the present article, we present some new insights about these effects and discuss the limitations of a p… ▽ More The Kramers-Moyal analysis is a well established approach to analyze stochastic time series from complex systems. If the sampling interval of a measured time series is too low, systematic errors occur in the analysis results. These errors are labeled as finite time effects in the literature. In the present article, we present some new insights about these effects and discuss the limitations of a previously published method to estimate Kramers-Moyal coefficients at the presence of finite time effects. To increase the reliability of this method and to avoid misinterpretations, we extend it by the computation of error estimates for estimated parameters using a Monte Carlo error propagation technique. Finally, the extended method is applied to a data set of an optical trapping experiment yielding estimations of the forces acting on a Brownian particle trapped by optical tweezers. We find an increased Markov-Einstein time scale of the order of the relaxation time of the process which can be traced back to memory effects caused by the interaction of the particle and the fluid. Above the Markov-Einstein time scale, the process can be very well described by the classical overdamped Markov model for Brownian motion. △ Less

The method takes advantage of a recently reported approach that allows to calculate exact finite sampling interval effects by solving the adjoint Fokker-Planck equation.
