Insulator-to-metal transition in Ca$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ has drawn keen attention because of its sensitivity to various stimulation and its potential controllability. Here, we report a direct observation of Fermi surface, which emerges upon introducing excess oxygen into an insulating Ca$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$, by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Comparison between energy distribution curves shows that the Mott insulating gap is closed by eV-scale spectral-weight transfer with excess oxygen. Momentum-space mapping exhibits two square-shaped sheets of the Fermi surface. One is a hole-like $α$ sheet around the corner of a tetragonal Brillouin zone, and the other is an electron-like $β$ sheet around the $Γ$ point. The electron occupancies of the $α$ and $β$ bands are determined to be $n_α=1.6$ and $n_β=0.6$, respectively. Our result indicates that the insulator-to-metal transition occurs selectively in $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ bands and not yet in $d_{xy}$ band. This orbital selectivity is most likely explained in terms of the energy level of $d_{xy}$, which is deeper for Ca$_{2}$RuO$_{4+δ}$ than for Ca$_{1.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$RuO$_{4}$. Consequently, we found substantial differences from the Fermi surface of other ruthenates, shedding light on a unique role of excess oxygen among the metallization methods of Ca$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$.

Hybridization of Bogoliubov quasiparticles (BQPs) between the CuO$_2$ layers in the triple-layer cuprate high-temperature superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ is studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). In the superconducting state, an anti-crossing gap opens between the outer- and inner-BQP bands, which we attribute primarily to interlayer single-particle hopping with possible contributions from interlayer Cooper pairing. We find that the $d$-wave superconducting gap of both BQP bands smoothly develops with momentum without abrupt jump in contrast to a previous ARPES study. Hybridization between the BQPs also gradually increases in going from the off-nodal to the anti-nodal region, which is explained by the momentum-dependence of the interlayer single-particle hopping. As possible mechanisms for the enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature, the hybridization between the BQPs, as well as the combination of phonon modes of the triple CuO$_2$ layers and spin fluctuations are discussed.

As the system cools through the tetragonal-orthorhombic "nematic" structural transition at 90~K, the splitting of the $d_{xz}$/$d_{yz}$ bands is observed to increase by a magnitude of 13 meV. Moreover, the onset of a $\sim$10 meV downward shift of the $d_{xy}$ band is also at 90~K. These measurements provide clarity on the nature, magnitude and temperature-dependence of the band shifts at the ${\rm Γ}$ point in the nematic phase of FeSe.

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study of the nodal quasi-particle spectra of the high-Tc cuprate tri-layer Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+d (Tc~ 110 K). The spectral weight Z of the nodal quasi-particle increases with decreasing temperature across the Tc. Such a temperature dependence is qualitatively similar to that of the coherence peak intensity in the anti nodal region of various high-Tc cuprates although the nodal spectral weight remains finite and large above Tc. We attribute this observation to the reduction of electron correlation strength in going from the normal metallic state to the superconducting state, a characteristic behavior of a superconductor with strong electron correlation.

The nature of the pseudogap in high transition temperature (high-Tc) superconducting cuprates has been a major issue in condensed matter physics. It is still unclear whether the high-Tc superconductivity can be universally associated with the pseudogap formation. Here we provide direct evidence of the existence of the pseudogap phase via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in another family of high-Tc superconductor, iron-pnictides. Our results reveal a composition dependent pseudogap formation in the multi-band electronic structure of BaFe2(As1-xPx)2. The pseudogap develops well above the magnetostructural transition for low x, persists above the nonmagnetic superconducting dome for optimal x and is destroyed for x ~ 0.6, thus showing a notable similarity with cuprates. In addition, the pseudogap formation is accompanied by inequivalent energy shifts in xz/yz orbitals of iron atoms, indicative of a peculiar iron orbital ordering which breaks the four-fold rotational symmetry.

In the iron pnictide superconductors, two distinct unconventional mechanisms of superconductivity have been put forth: One is mediated by spin fluctuations leading to the s+- state with sign change of superconducting gap between the hole and electron bands, and the other is orbital fluctuations which favor the s++ state without sign reversal. Here we report direct observation of peculiar momentum-dependent anisotropy in the superconducting gap from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 (Tc=30 K). The large anisotropy found only in the electron Fermi surface (FS) and the nearly isotropic gap on the entire hole FSs are together consistent with modified s+- gap with nodal loops, which can be theoretically reproduced by considering both spin and orbital fluctuations whose competition generates the gap modulation. This indicates that these two fluctuations are nearly equally important to the high-Tc superconductivity in this system.

The kink energy of the OP band is $\sim$ 70 meV, as observed in various high-$T_c$ cuprates, while that of the IP band is as large as 100 meV in the superconducting (SC) state. This large kink energy is attributed to the $\sim$ 35 meV buckling mode plus the large ($\sim$ 60 meV) SC gap of IP. The IP band also shows a weak kink feature at 70 meV in the SC state. The latter feature can be explained either by the 70 meV half-breathing mode or by the $\sim$ 35 meV buckling-phonon mode plus the $\sim$ 40 meV SC gap of OP if interlayer scattering of QP is involved.

With antiferromagnetic ordering, both of these two van Hove singularities come down below the Fermi energy, leading to a topological change in the innermost Fermi surface around the kz axis from cylindrical to tear-shaped, as expected from first-principles calculation. These singularities may provide an additional instability for the Fermi surface of the superconductors derived from BaFe2As2.

Combining this result with previous ARPES results on single- and double-layer cuprates, we show that the relationship between 2$Δ_{\rm{sc}}$ = 4.3$k_{\rm{B}}T_c$ holds for various HTSCs. Furthermore, at $T$ $\sim$ $T_c$, the quasi-patricle width at the end point of the Fermi arc is found to coincide with $Δ_{\rm{sc}}$, consistent with the context of Planckian dissipation.

Our results suggest the competition among multiple screening effects, and provide important clues to the source of sufficiently strong low-energy coupling, λLE ~ 1, in underdoped system.

Low-energy tunable photons have enabled us to resolve a small nodal bilayer splitting, unmasking the intrinsic single-particle scattering rate. The nodal scattering rate is abruptly suppressed upon the superconducting transition, and shows a linear energy dependence at low energies, indicating the nontrivial effect of elastic scatterings on the quasiparticles. With increasing energy, the antibonding-band scattering rate becomes higher than the bonding one. The observations imply the character of the scatterers dominant at low energies.

With Pb substitution x, chemical potential mu abruptly jumps by ~ 0.07 eV between x=0.15 and 0.17, indicating that a charge gap is opened at x ~= 0.16 in agreement with the Mott insulating state of the d2 configuration. When holes or electrons are doped into the Mott insulator of x ~= 0.16, the gap is filled and the photoemission spectral weight at mu, rho(mu), gradually increases in a similar way to the electronic specific heat coefficient, although the spectral weight remains depressed around mu compared to that expected for a normal metal, showing a pseudogap behavior in the metallic samples. The observed behavior of varrho(mu)->0 for x->0.16 is contrasted with the usual picture that the electron effective mass of the Fermi-liquid system is enhanced towards the metal-insulator boundary. With increasing temperature, the gap or the pseudogap is rapidly filled up, and the spectra at T=300 K appears to be almost those of a normal metal. Near the metal-insulator boundary, the spectra around mu are consistent with the formation of a Coulomb gap, suggesting the influence of long-range Coulomb interaction under the structural disorder intrinsic to this system.

A "band" having about 500 meV energy dispersion is found in the first half of the Brillouin zone $(0\le kb/π<1/2)$, but disappears at $kb / π\sim 1/2$. Two dispersive features, expected from the spin-charge separation, as have been observed in other quasi-one-dimensional systems like Sr$_2$CuO$_3$, are not detected. These characteristic features are well reproduced by the $d$-$p$ chain model calculations with a small charge-transfer energy $Δ$ compared with that of one-dimensional Cu-O based compounds. We propose that this smaller $Δ$ is the origin of the absence of clear spin- and charge-separation in the photoemission spectra and strong non-linear optical effect in [Ni(chxn)$_2$Br]Br$_2$.

Abstract:
Doping dependence of the electronic structure of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) has been systematically studied in a series of photoemission measurements. The unusual spectral features in the underdoped regime are attributed to the formation of dynamical stripes and the opening of large and small pseudogaps.

The data analysis using energy distribution curves, momentum distribution curves and intensity maps all show evidence of an electron-like Fermi surface, which is well explained by band structure calculations. Evidence for many-body effects are also found in the substantial spectral weight remaining below the Fermi level around (pi,0), where the band is predicted to lie above EF.

We compare the angle-resolved photoemission spectra of the hole-doped Cu-O chains in PrBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (Pr123) and in PrBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ (Pr124). The electronic structure of the La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) system has been studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We report on the evolution of the Fermi surface, the superconducting gap and the band dispersion around the extended saddle point $k=(π,0)$ with hole doping in the superconducting and metallic phases. As hole concentration $x$ decreases, the flat band at $(π,0)$ moves from above the Fermi level ($E_F$) for $x>0.2$ to below $E_F$ for $x<0.2$, and is further lowered down to $x=0.05$. From the leading-edge shift of ARPES spectra, the magnitude of the superconducting gap around $(π,0)$ is found to monotonically increase as $x$ decreases from $x=0.30$ down to $x=0.05$ even though $T_c$ decreases in the underdoped region, and the superconducting gap appears to smoothly evolve into the normal-state gap at $x=0.05$. It is shown that the energy scales characterizing these low-energy structures have similar doping dependences. For the heavily overdoped sample ($x=0.30$), the band dispersion and the ARPES spectral lineshape are analyzed using a simple phenomenological self-energy form, and the electronic effective mass enhancement factor $m^*/m_b \simeq 2$ has been found. As the hole concentration decreases, an incoherent component that cannot be described within the simple self-energy analysis grows intense in the high-energy tail of the ARPES peak. Some unusual features of the electronic structure observed for the underdoped region ($x \lesssim 0.10$) are consistent with the numerical works on the stripe model.

We have performed a photoemission study of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$TiO$_{3+y/2}$ near the filling-control metal-insulator transition (MIT) as a function of hole doping. Mass renormalization deduced from the spectral weight and the width of the quasi-particle band around the chemical potential $μ$ is compared with that deduced from the electronic specific heat. The result implies that, near the MIT, band narrowing occurs strongly in the vicinity of $μ$. Spectral weight transfer occurs from the coherent to the incoherent parts upon antiferromagnetic ordering, which we associate with the partial gap opening at $μ$.

We have observed another dispersive band exhibiting one-dimensional character, which we attribute to signals from the doped CuO$_3$ chain. The overall band dispersion of the one-dimensional band agrees with the prediction of $t-J$ model calculation with parameters relevant to cuprates except that the intensity near the Fermi level is considerably suppressed in the experiment.

We have performed x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) studies of single crystal Ba_{1-x}K_{x}BiO_{3} (BKBO) covering the whole composition range $0 \leq x \leq 0.60$. Several features in the oxygen 1\textit{s} core XAS spectra show systematic changes with $x$. Spectral weight around the absorption threshold increases with hole doping and shows a finite jump between $x=0.30$ and 0.40, which signals the metal-insulator transition. We have compared the obtained results with band-structure calculations. Comparison with the XAS results of BaPb_{1-x}Bi_{x}O_{3} has revealed quite different doping dependences between BKBO and BPBO. We have also observed systematic core-level shifts in the XPS spectra as well as in the XAS threshold as functions of $x$, which can be attributed to a chemical potential shift accompanying the hole doping. The observed chemical potential shift is found to be slower than that predicted by the rigid band model based on the band-structure calculations.

Near the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) $x\sim 0.05$, spectral weight is transferred with hole doping between two coexisting components, suggesting a microscopic inhomogeneity of the doped-hole distribution. For the underdoped LSCO ($x\leq 0.12$), the dispersive band crossing the Fermi level becomes invisible in the $(0,0)-(π,π)$ direction unlike Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+y}$. These observations may be reconciled with the evolution of holes in the insulator into fluctuating stripes in the superconductor.
