Quantum phases of matter such as superconducting, ferromagnetic and Wigner crystal states are often driven by the two-dimensionality (2D) of correlated systems. Meanwhile, spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is a fundamental element leading to nontrivial topology which gives rise to quantum phenomena such as the large anomalous Hall effect and nontrivial superconductivity. However, the search for controllable platforms with both 2D and SOC has been relatively overlooked so far. Here, we control and study the electronic ground states of iridate ultrathin films having both 2D and SOC by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) calculations. The metallicity of SrIrO$_3$ ultrathin films is controlled down to a monolayer by dimensional and strain manipulation. Our results suggest that the iridate ultrathin films can be a controllable 2D SOC platform exhibiting a variety of phenomena for future functional devices.

We aim to provide an explanation for how the human brain might connect words for sentence formation. A novel approach to modeling syntactic representation is introduced, potentially showing the existence of universal syntactic structures for all natural languages. As the discovery of DNA's double helix structure shed light on the inner workings of genetics, we wish to introduce a basic understanding of how language might work in the human brain. It could be the brain's way of encoding and decoding knowledge. It also brings some insight into theories in linguistics, psychology, and cognitive science. After looking into the logic behind universal syntactic structures and the methodology of the modeling technique, we attempt to analyze corpora that showcase universality in the language process of different natural languages such as English and Korean. Lastly, we discuss the critical period hypothesis, universal grammar, and a few other assertions on language for the purpose of advancing our understanding of the human brain.

Image super-resolution is a common task on mobile and IoT devices, where one often needs to upscale and enhance low-resolution images and video frames. While numerous solutions have been proposed for this problem in the past, they are usually not compatible with low-power mobile NPUs having many computational and memory constraints. In this Mobile AI challenge, we address this problem and propose the participants to design an efficient quantized image super-resolution solution that can demonstrate a real-time performance on mobile NPUs. The participants were provided with the DIV2K dataset and trained INT8 models to do a high-quality 3X image upscaling. The runtime of all models was evaluated on the Synaptics VS680 Smart Home board with a dedicated edge NPU capable of accelerating quantized neural networks. All proposed solutions are fully compatible with the above NPU, demonstrating an up to 60 FPS rate when reconstructing Full HD resolution images. A detailed description of all models developed in the challenge is provided in this paper.

Recent astrochemical models and experiments have explained that complex organic molecules (COMs; molecules composed of six or more atoms) are produced on the dust grain mantles in cold and dense gas in prestellar cores. However, the detailed chemical processes and the roles of physical conditions on chemistry are still far from understood. To address these questions, we investigated twelve high-mass star-forming regions using the ALMA band 6 observations. They are associated with 44/95GHz class I and 6.7 GHz class II CH$_{3}$OH masers, indicative of undergoing active accretion. We found 28 hot cores with COMs emission among 68 continuum peaks at 1.3 mm and specified 10 hot cores associated with 6.7 GHz class II CH$_{3}$OH masers. Up to 19 COMs are identified including oxygen- and nitrogen-bearing molecules and their isotopologues in cores. The derived abundances show a good agreement with those from other low- and high-mass star-forming regions, implying that the COMs chemistry is predominantly set by the ice chemistry in the prestellar core stage. One clear trend is that the COMs detection rate steeply grows with the gas column density, which can be attributed to the efficient formation of COMs in dense cores. In addition, cores associated with a 6.7 GHz class II CH$_{3}$OH maser tend to be enriched with COMs. Finally, our results suggest that the enhanced abundances of several molecules in our hot cores could be originated by the active accretion as well as different physical conditions of cores.

The emergence of scalar Higgs-type amplitude modes in systems where symmetry is spontaneously broken has been a highly successful, paradigmatic description of phase transitions, with implications ranging from high-energy particle physics to low-energy condensed matter systems. Here, we uncover two successive high temperature phase transitions in the pyrochlore magnet Nd$_2$Ru$_2$O$_7$ at $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 147$ K and $T^* = 97$ K, that lead to giant phonon instabilities and culminate in the emergence of a highly coherent excitation. This coherent excitation, distinct from other phonons and from conventional magnetic modes, stabilizes at a low energy of 3 meV. We assign it to a collective Higgs-type amplitude mode, that involves bond energy modulations of the Ru$_4$ tetrahedra. Its striking two-fold symmetry, incompatible with the underlying crystal structure, highlights the possibility of multiple entangled broken symmetries.

The helimagnetic order describes a non-collinear spin texture of antiferromagnets, arising from competing exchange interactions. Although collinear antiferromagnets are elemental building blocks of antiferromagnetic (AFM) spintronics, the potential of implementing spintronic functionality in non-collinear antiferromagnets has not been clarified thus far. Here, we propose an AFM helimagnet of EuCo2As2 as a novel single-phase spintronic material that exhibits a remarkable sign reversal of anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR). The contrast in the AMR arises from two electrically distinctive magnetic phases with spin reorientation driven by magnetic field lying on the easy-plane, which switches the sign of the AMR from positive to negative. Further, various AFM memory states associated with the evolution of the spin structure under magnetic fields were identified theoretically, based on an easy-plane anisotropic spin model. These results reveal that non-collinear antiferromagnets hold potential for developing spintronic devices.

A spin valve is a prototype of spin-based electronic devices found on ferromagnets, in which an antiferromagnet plays a supporting role. Recent findings in antiferromagnetic spintronics show that an antiferromagnetic order in single-phase materials solely governs dynamic transport, and antiferromagnets are considered promising candidates for spintronic technology. In this work, we demonstrated antiferromagnet-based spintronic functionality on an itinerant Ising antiferromagnet of Ca0.9Sr0.1Co2As2 by integrating nanoscale spin-valve-type structure and investigating anisotropic magnetic properties driven by spin-flips. Multiple stacks of 1 nm thick spin-valve-like unit are intrinsically embedded in the antiferromagnetic spin structure. In the presence of a rotating magnetic field, a new type of the spin-valve-like operation was observed for large anomalous Hall conductivity and anisotropic magnetoresistance, whose effects are maximized above the spin-flip transition. In addition, a joint experimental and theoretical study provides an efficient tool to read out various spin states, which scheme can be useful for implementing extensive spintronic applications.

We observed polarization of the SiO rotational transitions from Orion Source I (SrcI) to probe the magnetic field in bipolar outflows from this high mass protostar. Both 43 GHz $J$=1-0 and 86 GHz $J$=2-1 lines were mapped with $\sim$20 AU resolution, using the Very Large Array (VLA) and Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA), respectively. The $^{28}$SiO transitions in the ground vibrational state are a mixture of thermal and maser emission. Comparison of the polarization position angles in the $J$=1-0 and $J$=2-1 transitions allows us to set an upper limit on possible Faraday rotation of $10^{4}$ radians m$^{-2}$, which would twist the $J$=2-1 position angles typically by less than 10 degrees. The smooth, systematic polarization structure in the outflow lobes suggests a well ordered magnetic field on scales of a few hundred AU. The uniformity of the polarization suggests a field strength of $\sim$30 milli-Gauss. It is strong enough to shape the bipolar outflow and possibly lead to sub-Keplerian rotation of gas at the base of the outflow. The strikingly high fractional linear polarizations of 80-90% in the $^{28}$SiO $v$=0 masers require anisotropic pumping. We measured circular polarizations of 60% toward the strongest maser feature in the $v$=0 $J$=1-0 peak. Anisotropic resonant scattering (ARS) is likely to be responsible for this circular polarization. We also present maps of the $^{29}$SiO $v$=0 $J$=2-1 maser and several other SiO transitions at higher vibrational levels and isotopologues.

We present results of continuum and spectral line observations with ALMA and 22 GHz water (H$_2$O) maser observations using KaVA and VERA toward a high-mass star-forming region, G25.82-0.17. Multiple 1.3 mm continuum sources are revealed, indicating the presence of young stellar objects (YSOs) at different evolutionary stages, namely an ultra-compact HII region, G25.82-E, a high-mass young stellar object (HM-YSO), G25.82-W1, and starless cores, G25.82-W2 and G25.82-W3. Two SiO outflows, at N-S and SE-NW orientations, are identified. The CH$_3$OH 8$_{-1}$-7$_{0}$ E line, known to be a class I CH$_3$OH maser at 229 GHz is also detected showing a mixture of thermal and maser emission. Moreover, the H$_2$O masers are distributed in a region ~0.25" shifted from G25.82-W1. The CH$_3$OH 22$_{4}$-21$_{5}$ E line shows a compact ring-like structure at the position of G25.82-W1 with a velocity gradient, indicating a rotating disk or envelope. Assuming Keplerian rotation, the dynamical mass of G25.82-W1 is estimated to be $>$25 M$_{\odot}$ and the total mass of 20 M$_\odot$-84 M$_\odot$ is derived from the 1.3 mm continuum emission. The driving source of the N-S SiO outflow is G25.82-W1 while that of the SE-NW SiO outflow is uncertain. Detection of multiple high-mass starless$/$protostellar cores and candidates without low-mass cores implies that HM-YSOs could form in individual high-mass cores as predicted by the turbulent core accretion model. If this is the case, the high-mass star formation process in G25.82 would be consistent with a scaled-up version of low-mass star formation.

We have compiled all the astrometry results from VERA, providing accurate trigonometric annual parallax and proper motion measurements. In total, 99 maser sources are listed in the VERA catalog. Among them, 21 maser sources are newly reported while the rest of 78 sources are referred to previously published results or those in preparation for forthcoming papers. The accuracy in the VERA astrometry are revisited and compared with those from the other VLBI astrometry projects such as BeSSeL (The Bar and Spiral Structure Legacy) Survey and GOBELINS (the Gould's Belt Distances Survey) with the VLBA (Very Long Baseline Array). We have confirmed that most of the astrometry results are consistent with each other, and the largest error sources are due to source structure of the maser features and their rapid variation, along with the systematic calibration errors and different analysis methods. Combined with the BeSSeL results, we estimate the up-to-date fundamental Galactic parameter of $R_{0}=7.92\pm0.16_{\rm{stat.}}\pm0.3_{\rm{sys.}}$~kpc and $Ω_{\odot}=30.17\pm0.27_{\rm{stat.}}\pm0.3_{\rm{sys.}}$~km~s$^{-1}$~kpc$^{-1}$, where $R_{0}$ and $Ω_{\odot}$ are the distance from the Sun to the Galactic center and the Sun's angular velocity of the Galactic circular rotation, respectively.

Exploring new magnetic materials is essential for finding advantageous functional properties such as magnetoresistance, magnetocaloric effect, spintronic functionality, and multiferroicity. Versatile classes of double perovskite compounds have been recently investigated because of intriguing physical properties arising from the proper combination of several magnetic ions. In this study, it is observed that the dominant ferrimagnetic phase is coexisted with a minor multiferroic phase in single-crystalline double-perovskite Er2CoMnO6. The majority portion of the ferrimagnetic order is activated by the long-range order of Er3+ moments below TEr = 10 K in addition to the ferromagnetic order of Co2+ and Mn4+ moments arising at TC = 67 K, characterized by compensated magnetization at TComp = 3.15 K. The inverted magnetic hysteresis loop observed below TComp can be described by an extended Stoner-Wohlfarth model. The additional multiferroic phase is identified by the ferroelectric polarization of 0.9 uC/m2 at 2 K. The coexisting ferrimagnetic and multiferroic phases appear to be strongly correlated in that metamagnetic and ferroelectric transitions occur simultaneously. The results based on intricate magnetic correlations and phases in Er2CoMnO6 enrich fundamental and applied research on magnetic materials through the scope of distinct magnetic characteristics in double perovskites.

The 29SiO v=2 J=11-10 and SiO v=4 J=11-10 lines have compact structures with the diameter of <80 AU. The spatial and velocity distribution suggest that the line emissions are associated with the base of the outflow and the surface of the edge-on disk. In contrast, SiO v=2 J=10-9 emission shows a bipolar structure in the direction of northeast-southwest low-velocity outflow with ~200 AU scale. The emission line exhibits a velocity gradient along the direction of the disk elongation. With the assumption of the ring structure with Keplerian rotation, we estimated the lower limit of the central mass to be 7 solar mass and the radius of 12 AU< r <26 AU.

We investigated the anisotropy of the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of singlecrystalline double perovskite Tb2CoMnO6, which crystallizes in a monoclinic P21/n structure. Due to dissimilar magnetic anisotropy, the ferromagnetic order of the Co2+ and Mn4+ moments emerges along the c-axis at TC = 100 K, and the larger Tb3+ moments align perpendicular to the c-axis, below TTb = 15 K. The intricate temperature development of the metamagnetism along the c-axis results in a large negative change in the magnetic entropy at low temperature. On the other hand, the larger but almost reversible magnetization, perpendicular to the c-axis, results in a small and positive entropy change. This highly anisotropic magnetocaloric effect (MCE) leads to a giant rotational MCE, estimated to be 20.8 J/kg K. Our findings, based on the magnetic anisotropy in Tb2CoMnO6, enrich fundamental and applied research on magnetic materials, considering the distinct magnetic characteristics of double perovskites.

One of the outstanding problems in star-formation theory concerns the transfer of angular momentum such that mass can accrete onto a newly born young stellar object (YSO). From a theoretical standpoint, outflows and jets are predicted to play an essential role in angular momentum transfer and their rotation motions have been reported for both low- and high-mass YSOs. However, little quantitative discussion on outflow launching mechanisms have been presented for high-mass YSOs due to a lack of observational data. Here we present a clear signature of rotation in the bipolar outflow driven by Orion Source I, a high-mass YSO candidate, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). A rotational transition of silicon monoxide (Si18O) reveals a velocity gradient perpendicular to the outflow axis which is consistent with that of the circumstellar disk traced by a high-excitation water (H2O) line. The launching radii and outward velocity of the outflow are estimated to be >10 au and 10 km s-1, respectively. These parameters rule out a possibility that the observed outflow is produced by entrainment of a high-velocity jet, and that contribution from stellar-wind or X-wind which have smaller launching radii are significant in the case of Source I. Thus, present results provide a convincing evidence of a rotating outflow directly driven by the magneto-centrifugal disk wind launched by a high-mass YSO candidate.

We have measured continuum flux densities of a high-mass protostar candidate, a radio source I in the Orion KL region (Orion Source I) using the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) at band 8 with an angular resolution of 0.1". The continuum emission at 430, 460, and 490 GHz associated with Source I shows an elongated structure along the northwest-southeast direction perpendicular to the so-called low-velocity bipolar outflow. The deconvolved size of the continuum source, 90 au times 20 au, is consistent with those reported previously at other millimeter/submillimeter wavelength. The flux density can be well fitted to the optically thick black-body spectral energy distribution (SED), and the brightness temperature is evaluated to be 700-800 K. It is much lower than that in the case of proton-electron or H- free-free radiations. Our data are consistent with the latest ALMA results by Plambeck & Wright (2016), in which the continuum emission have been proposed to arise from the edge-on circumstellar disk via thermal dust emission, unless the continuum source consists of an unresolved structure with the smaller beam filling factor.

We present an observational study of the vibrationally excited H$_{2}$O line at 658 GHz ($ν_{2}$=1, 1$_{1, 0}$-1$_{0, 1}$) toward Orion KL using the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). This line is clearly detected at the position of the massive protostar candidate, the Source I. The spatial structure is compact with a size of about 100 AU and is elongated along the northeast-southwest low-velocity (18 km s$^{-1}$) bipolar outflow traced by 22 GHz H$_{2}$O masers, SiO masers, and thermal SiO lines. A velocity gradient can be seen perpendicular to the bipolar outflow. Overall spatial and velocity structure seems analogous to that of the 321 GHz H$_{2}$O maser line previously detected with ALMA and vibrationally excited SiO maser emission. The brightness temperature of the 658 GHz H$_{2}$O line is estimated to be higher than 2$\times$10$^{4}$ K, implying that it is emitted via maser action. Our results suggest that the 658 GHz H$_{2}$O maser line is emitted from the base of the outflow from a rotating and expanding accretion disk as observed for the SiO masers and the 321 GHz H$_{2}$O maser. We also search for two other H$_{2}$O lines at 646 GHz (9$_{7, 3}$-8$_{8, 0}$ and 9$_{7, 2}$-8$_{8, 1}$), but they are not detected in Orion KL.

We have carried out high resolution observations with Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) of continuum emission from Orion KL region. We identify 11 compact sources at ALMA band 6 (245 GHz) and band 7 (339 GHz), including Hot Core, Compact Ridge, SMA1, IRc4, IRc7, and a radio source I (Source I). Spectral energy distribution (SED) of each source is determined by using previous 3 mm continuum emission data. Physical properties such as size, mass, hydrogen number density and column density are discussed based on the dust graybody SED. Among 11 identified sources, Source I, a massive protostar candidate, is a dominant energy source in Orion KL. We extensively investigate its SED from centimeter to submillimeter wavelengths. The SED of Source I can be fitted with a single power-law index of 1.97 suggesting an optically thick emission. We employ the H$^{-}$ free-free emission as an opacity source of this optically thick emission. The temperature, density, and mass of the circumstellar disk associated with Source I are constrained by the SED of H$^{-}$ free-free emission. Still the fitting result shows a significant deviation from the observed flux densities. Combined with the thermal dust graybody SED to explain excess emission at higher frequency, a smaller power-law index of 1.60 for the H$^{-}$ free-free emission is obtained in the SED fitting. The power-law index smaller than 2 would suggest a compact source size or a clumpy structure unresolved with the present study. Future higher resolution observations with ALMA are essential to reveal more detailed spatial structure and physical properties of Source I.

We have conducted monitoring observations of the supermaser in Orion KL using VERA, VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry, in the current third burst since 2011 March. Three flux maxima are detected in 2011 and 2012 with rising and falling timescales of 2-7 months. Time variations of the supermaser seem symmetric for all of the active phases. The maximum total flux density of 135000 Jy is observed in 2012 June while it is still one order of magnitude lower than those in previous bursts. The supermaser consists of two spatially different components at different velocities. They are elongated along a northwest-southeast direction perpendicular to the low-velocity outflow driven by Source I. Proper motions of the supermaser features with respect to Source I are measured toward west and southwest directions, almost parallel to the low-velocity outflow. The flux density and linewidth show an anti-correlation as expected for an unsaturated maser emission. The supermaser is located close to the methylformate (HCOOCH3) line and continuum emission peaks in the Orion Compact Ridge detected by ALMA. The broader velocity range of the weak HCOOCH3 emission at the supermaser position would be an evidence of a shock front. On the other hand, the 321 GHz H2O line is not detected at the position of the supermaser. It can be explained qualitatively by one of the theoretical H2O excitation models without extraordinary conditions. Our results support a scenario that the supermaser is excited in the dense gas interacting with the low-velocity outflow in the Compact Ridge. The extremely high flux density and its symmetric time variation for rising and falling phases could be explained by a beaming effect during the amplification process rather than changes in physical conditions.

Our result is consistent with earlier distance measurements, but yields the highest accuracy of about $5\%$ level. Applying our distance, we derived an absolute K-band magnitude of $M_{\mathrm{K}} = -7.71 \pm 0.11$, which is consistent with the recent Period-Luminosity relation by VLBI parallax measurements for 5 OH-Mira variables. In addition, the expansion age of an inner nebulae around R Aqr is found to be about 240 years, corresponds to about the year 1773.

We detected two ortho-H$_{2}$O lines at 321 GHz ($10_{2,9}$-$9_{3,6}$) and 336 GHz ($ν_{2}=1, 5_{2,3}$-$6_{1,6}$) for the first time in Source I. The latter one is in vibrationally excited state at the lower state energy of 2939 K, suggesting an evidence of hot molecular gas close to Source I. The integrated intensity map of the 321 GHz line is elongated along the bipolar outflow while the 336 GHz line map is unresolved with a beam size of 0.4\arcsec. Both of these maps show velocity gradient perpendicular to the bipolar outflow. The velocity centroid map of the 321 GHz line implies spatial and velocity structure similar to that of vibrationally-excited SiO masers tracing the root of the outflow emanating from the disk surface. In contrast, the 336 GHz line is most likely emitted from the disk midplane with a diameter of 0.2\arcsec (84 AU) as traced by a radio continuum emission and a dark lane devoid of the vibrationally-excited SiO maser emission. The observed velocity gradient and the spectral profile of the 336 GHz H$_{2}$O line can be reconciled with a model of an edge-on ring-like structure with an enclosed mass of $>$7$M_{\odot}$ and an excitation temperature of $>$3000 K. The present results provide a further evidence of hot and neutral circumstellar disk rotating around Source I with a diameter of $\sim$100 AU scale.

We present analyses to determine the fundamental parameters of the Galaxy based on VLBI astrometry of 52 Galactic maser sources obtained with VERA, VLBA and EVN. We model the Galaxy's structure with a set of parameters including the Galaxy center distance R_0, the angular rotation velocity at the LSR Omega_0, mean peculiar motion of the sources with respect to Galactic rotation (U_src, V_src, W_src), rotation-curve shape index, and the V component of the Solar peculiar motions V_sun. Based on a Markov chain Monte Carlo method, we find that the Galaxy center distance is constrained at a 5% level to be R_0 = 8.05 +/- 0.45 kpc, where the error bar includes both statistical and systematic errors. We also find that the two components of the source peculiar motion U_src and W_src are fairly small compared to the Galactic rotation velocity, being U_src = 1.0 +/- 1.5 km/s and W_src = -1.4 +/- 1.2 km/s. Also, the rotation curve shape is found to be basically flat between Galacto-centric radii of 4 and 13 kpc. On the other hand, we find a linear relation between V_src and V_sun as V_src = V_sun -19 (+/- 2) km/s, suggesting that the value of V_src is fully dependent on the adopted value of V_sun. Regarding the rotation speed in the vicinity of the Sun, we also find a strong correlation between Omega_0 and V_sun. We find that the angular velocity of the Sun, Omega_sun, which is defined as Omega_sun = Omega_0 + V_sun/R_0, can be well constrained with the best estimate of Omega_sun = 31.09 +/- 0.78 km/s/kpc. This corresponds to Theta_0 = 238 +/- 14 km/s if one adopts the above value of R_0 and recent determination of V_sun ~ 12 km/s.

We investigated the ALMA science verification data of Orion KL and found a spectral signature of the vibrationally excited H2O maser line at 232.68670 GHz (nu2=1, 5,5,0-6,4,3). This line has been detected in circumstellar envelopes of late-type stars so far but not in young stellar objects including Orion KL. Thus, this is the first detection of the 232 GHz vibrationally excited H2O maser in star-forming regions. The distribution of the 232 GHz maser is concentrated at the position of the radio Source I, which is remarkably different from other molecular lines. The spectrum shows a double-peak structure at the peak velocities of -2.1 and 13.3 km s-1. It appears to be consistent with the 22 GHz H2O masers and 43 GHz SiO masers observed around Source I. Thus, the 232 GHz H2O maser around Source I would be excited by the internal heating by an embedded protostar, being associated with either the root of the outflows/jets or the circumstellar disk around Source I, as traced by the 22 GHz H2O masers or 43 GHz SiO masers, respectively.

$2$-torus $T$ in $(M,ω)$ such that $\langle c_1(M), [T] \rangle = 0$.
As applications, we will give a very simple proof of the following well-known theorem which was proved by Atiyah-Bott \cite{AB}, Lupton-Oprea \cite{LO}, and Ono \cite{O2} : suppose that $(M,ω)$ is a smooth closed symplectic manifold satisfying $c_1(TM)=λ\cdot [ω]$ for some $λ\in \R$ and let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group acting effectively on $M$ preserving $ω$. Then (1) if $λ< 0$, then $G$ must be trivial, (2) if $λ=0$, then the $G$-action is non-Hamiltonian, and (3) if $λ> 0$, then the $G$-action is Hamiltonian.

This is the third time to detect such phenomena in Orion KL, followed by those in 1979-1985 and 1998. We have carried out astrometric observations of the bursting H$_{2}$O maser features in Orion KL with VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry), a Japanese VLBI network dedicated for astrometry. The total flux of the bursting feature at the LSR velocity of 7.58 km s$^{-1}$ reaches 4.4$\times10^{4}$ Jy in March 2011. The intensity of the bursting feature is three orders of magnitudes larger than that of the same velocity feature in the quiescent phase in 2006. Two months later, another new feature appears at the LSR velocity of 6.95 km s$^{-1}$ in May 2011, separated by 12 mas north of the 7.58 km s$^{-1}$ feature. Thus, the current burst occurs at two spatially different features. The bursting masers are elongated along the northwest-southeast direction as reported in the previous burst in 1998. We determine the absolute positions of the bursting features for the first time ever with a submilli-arcsecond (mas) accuracy. Their positions are coincident with the shocked molecular gas called the Orion Compact Ridge. We tentatively detect the absolute proper motions of the bursting features toward southwest direction. It is most likely that the outflow from the radio source I or another young stellar object interacting with the Compact Ridge is a possible origin of the H$_{2}$O maser burst.

Abstract:

We classify equivariant topological complex vector bundles over real projective plane under a compact Lie group (not necessarily effective) action. It is shown that nonequivariant Chern classes and isotropy representations at (at most) three points are sufficient to classify equivariant vector bundles over real projective plane except one case. To do it, we relate the problem to classification on two-sphere through the covering map because equivariant vector bundles over two-sphere have been already classified.

We consider dimension reduction for regression or classification in which the predictors are matrix- or array-valued. This type of predictor arises when measurements are obtained for each combination of two or more underlying variables--for example, the voltage measured at different channels and times in electroencephalography data. For these applications, it is desirable to preserve the array structure of the reduced predictor (e.g., time versus channel), but this cannot be achieved within the conventional dimension reduction formulation. In this paper, we introduce a dimension reduction method, to be called dimension folding, for matrix- and array-valued predictors that preserves the array structure. In an application of dimension folding to an electroencephalography data set, we correctly classify 97 out of 122 subjects as alcoholic or nonalcoholic based on their electroencephalography in a cross-validation sample.

In this paper, we do \textit{not} assume $f$ is $\mathcal{C}^1$-generic. We have two main themes in the paper: (1) the chain recurrence; (2) relations among recurrence points, homoclinic points, shadowability and hyperbolicity. For (1) (without assuming $M$ is compact), we have the theorem: if $f$ is Lagrange stable, then $M$ is a chain recurrent set. If $M$ is compact, then the Lagrange-stability is automatic. For (2) (assuming the compactness of $M$), we prove some various implications among notions, such as: (i) the $\mathcal{C}^1$-stable shadowability equals to the hyperbolicity of $M$; (ii) if a point $p\in M$ has a recurrence point in the unstable manifold $W^u (p, f)$ and there is no homoclinic point of $p,$ then $f$ is nonshadowable; (iii) if $f$ has the shadowing property and $p$ has a recurrence point in $W^u (p, f),$ then the recurrent point is in the limit set of homoclinic points of $p$.

We present a distance measurement for the semiregular variable S Crateris (S Crt) based on its annual parallax. With the unique dual beam system of the VLBI Exploration for Radio Astrometry (VERA) telescopes, we measured the absolute proper motion of a water maser spot associated with S Crt, referred to the quasar J1147-0724 located at an angular separation of 1.23$^{\circ}$. In observations spanning nearly two years, we have detected the maser spot at the LSR velocity of 34.7 km s$^{-1}$, for which we measured the annual parallax of 2.33$\pm$0.13 mas corresponding to a distance of 430$^{+25}_{-23}$ pc. This measurement has an accuracy one order of magnitude better than the parallax measurements of HIPPARCOS. The angular distribution and three-dimensional velocity field of maser spots indicate a bipolar outflow with the flow axis along northeast-southwest direction. Using the distance and photospheric temperature, we estimate the stellar radius of S Crt and compare it with those of Mira variables.

We report astrometric observations of H2O masers around the red supergiant VY Canis Majoris (VY CMa) carried out with VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA). Based on astrometric monitoring for 13 months, we successfully measured a trigonometric parallax of 0.88 +/- 0.08 mas, corresponding to a distance of 1.14 +0.11/-0.09 kpc. This is the most accurate distance to VY CMa and the first one based on an annual parallax measurement. The luminosity of VY CMa has been overestimated due to a previously accepted distance. With our result, we re-estimate the luminosity of VY CMa to be (3 +/- 0.5) x 10^5 L_sun using the bolometric flux integrated over optical and IR wavelengths. This improved luminosity value makes location of VY CMa on the Hertzsprung-Russel (HR) diagram much closer to the theoretically allowable zone (i.e. the left side of the Hayashi track) than previous ones, though uncertainty in the effective temperature of the stellar surface still does not permit us to make a final conclusion.

Based on the phase-referencing VLBI astrometry, we derive an annual parallax of IRAS 22198+6336 to be 1.309$\pm$0.047 mas, corresponding to the distance of 764$\pm$27 pc from the Sun. Although the most principal error source of our astrometry is attributed to the internal structure of the maser spots, we successfully reduce the errors in the derived annual parallax by employing the position measurements for all of the 26 detected maser spots. Based on this result, we reanalyze the spectral energy distribution (SED) of IRAS 22198+6336 and find that the bolometric luminosity and total mass of IRAS 22198+6336 are 450$L_{\odot}$ and 7$M_{\odot}$, respectively. These values are consistent with an intermediate-mass YSO deeply embedded in the dense dust core, which has been proposed to be an intermediate-mass counterpart of a low-mass Class 0 source. In addition, we obtain absolute proper motions of the H$_{2}$O masers for the most blue-shifted components. We propose that the collimated jets aligned along the east-west direction are the most plausible explanation for the origin of the detected maser features.

We have used the Japanese VLBI array VERA to perform high-precision astrometry of an H2O maser source in the Galactic star-forming region NGC 281 West, which has been considered to be part of a 300-pc superbubble. We successfully detected a trigonometric parallax of 0.355+/-0.030 mas, corresponding to a source distance of 2.82+/-0.24 kpc. Our direct distance determination of NGC 281 has resolved the large distance discrepancy between previous photometric and kinematic studies; likely NGC 281 is in the far side of the Perseus spiral arm. The source distance as well as the absolute proper motions were used to demonstrate the 3D structure and expansion of the NGC 281 superbubble, ~650 pc in size parallel to the Galactic disk and with a shape slightly elongated along the disk or spherical, but not vertically elongated, indicating the superbubble expansion may be confined to the disk. We estimate the expansion velocity of the superbubble as ~20 km/s both perpendicular to and parallel to the Galactic disk with a consistent timescale of ~20 Myr.

We obtained the spectral function of very high quality natural graphite single crystals using angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). A clear separation of non-bonding and bonding bands and asymmetric lineshape are observed. The asymmetric lineshapes are well accounted for by the finite photoelectron escape depth and the band structure. The extracted width of the spectral function (inverse of the photohole life time) near the K point is, beyond the maximum phonon energy, approximately proportional to the energy as expected from the linear density of states near the Fermi energy. The upper bound for the electron-phonon coupling constant is about 0.2, a much smaller value than the previously reported one.

The distance to Orion KL is determined for the first time with the annual parallax method in these observations. Although this value is consistent with that of the previously reported, 480+/-80 pc, which is estimated from the statistical parallax method using proper motions and radial velocities of the H2O maser features, our new results provide the much more accurate value with an uncertainty of only 4%. In addition to the annual parallax, we have detected an absolute proper motion of the maser feature, suggesting an outflow motion powered by the radio source I along with the systematic motion of source I itself.

We report on absolute proper-motion measurements of an H2O maser source in the NGC 281 West molecular cloud, which is located ~320 pc above the Galactic plane and is associated with an HI loop extending from the Galactic plane. We have conducted multi-epoch phase-referencing observations of the maser source with VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry) over a monitoring period of 6 months since May 2006. We find that the H2O maser features in NGC 281 West are systematically moving toward the southwest and further away from the Galactic plane with a vertical velocity of ~20-30 km/s at its estimated distance of 2.2-3.5 kpc. Our new results provide the most direct evidence that the gas in the NGC 281 region on the HI loop was blown out from the Galactic plane, most likely in a superbubble driven by multiple or sequential supernova explosions in the Galactic plane.
