Universal representation of geometric patterns of disordered matters is investigated with the aid of general topology. By utilizing the result obtained in the previous study (S. Ohmori, et.al., Phys. Universal representation of geometric patterns of disordered matters is investigated with the aid of general topology. By utilizing the result obtained in the previous study (S. Ohmori, et.al., Phys. Scr. 94, 105213 (2019)) that any patterns can be represented by a specific topological space, a construction of topological representation of patterns using Cantor set is shown. The obtained topological representations are then demonstrated by the contractions that characterize the self-similarity of Cantor set. For some practical geometric patterns, e.g., network, dendritic, and clusterized patterns, their topological representations are focused on.

Abstract:
We discuss here geometric structures of condensed matters by means of a fundamental topological method. Any geometric pattern can be universally represented by a decomposition space of a topological space consisting of the infinite product space of 0 and 1, in which a partition with a specific topological structure determines a character of each geometric structure.

The paramagnetic nature of the substituted monoxide Co$_{0.03}$Mg$_{0.97}$O allows for the disentanglement of spin-exchange and spin-orbit interactions. Neutron spectroscopy was applied to study the magnetic interactions of orbitally degenerate Co$^{2+}$ on a host MgO rocksalt lattice where no long range spin or orbital order exists. The paramagnetic nature of the substituted monoxide Co$_{0.03}$Mg$_{0.97}$O allows for the disentanglement of spin-exchange and spin-orbit interactions. By considering the prevalent excitations from Co$^{2+}$ spin pairs, we extract 7 exchange constants out to the fourth coordination shell. An antiferromagnetic next nearest neighbor 180$^{\circ}$ exchange interaction is dominant, however dual ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions are observed for pairings with other pathways. These interactions can be understood in terms of a combination of orbital degeneracy in the $t_{2g}$ channel and the Goodenough-Kanamori-Anderson (GKA) rules. Our work suggests that such a hierarchy of exchange interactions exists in transition metal-based oxides with a $t_{2g}$ orbital degeneracy.

Topological characterization of network structures of aggregates of atoms

Abstract:
Two distinct structures of aggregates of atoms connected by anisotropic bonds with a network configuration are discussed from the viewpoint of a point set topology. A specific topological space connects the two types of topological structures based on the equivalence classes, which show the main difference of the structures between the aggregates of atoms with or without a clusterized structure.

Both Cantor middle-third set and Sierpiński carpet are self-similar, perfect, compact metric spaces. In spite of the similarity of the mathematical procedure of construction, there exists between them a fundamental difference in topological nature, and this difference affects the methods of construction of an interesting non-trivial quotient space of them. The totally disconnectedness (or, more generally, zero-dimensional) enables Cantor middle-third set to have a non-trivial quotient space which is self-similar. On the other hand, concerning Sierpiński carpet, because of the connectedness of its structure, no non-trivial quotient space which is self-similar can be constructed by such an elegant procedure as that for Cantor middle-third set. Various topologically significant nature specific to Cantor middle-third set owe mainly to the totally disconnectedness of the set.

Here we report on the synthesis of solid solution (CuCl1-xBrx)LaNb2O7 (0 < x < 1), and its structural and magnetic properties by means of magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, and neutron diffraction studies. The x-dependence of cell parameters follows Vegards law, verifying the uniform distribution of Cl and Br atoms at the halide site, though a more complex structural evolution is inferred from an opposing correlation between the intra- and interlayer cell distances (vs. x). 5%-Br substitution is found to induce antiferromagnetic order with TN = 7 K, consistent with a recent mSR study, and the magnetic structure is collinear, having a significantly reduced moment. Further Br substitution leads to a linear increase in TN up to x = 1. These results indicate that (CuCl)LaNb2O7 is located in the vicinity of the quantum phase boundary.

Together with several other $μ$SR studies of quantum phase transitions in geometrically-frustrated spin systems, the present results reveal that the evolution from a spin-gap to a magnetically ordered state is often associated with phase separation and/or a first order phase transition.
