Neutral hydrogen (HI) is the primary component of the cool interstellar medium (ISM) and is the reservoir of fuel for star formation. Owing to the sensitivity of existing radio telescopes, our understanding of the evolution of the ISM in galaxies remains limited, as it is based on only a few hundred galaxies detected in HI beyond the local Universe. With the high sensitivity of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), we carried out a blind HI search, the FAST Ultra-Deep Survey (FUDS), which extends to redshifts up to 0.42 and a sensitivity of 50 $\rm μJy \cdot beam^{-1}$. Here, we report the first discovery of six galaxies in HI at $z>0.38$. For these galaxies, the FAST angular resolution of $\sim\,4'$ corresponds to a mean linear size of $\sim1.3\,h_{70}^{-1}\,$Mpc. These galaxies are among the most distant HI emission detections known, with one having the most massive HI content ($10^{10.93 \pm 0.04}~h_{70}^{-2}\, \rm M_\odot$). Using recent data from the DESI survey, and new observations with the Hale, BTA, and Keck telescopes, optical counterparts are detected for all galaxies within the 3-$σ$ positional uncertainty ($0.5\,h_{70}^{-1}\,$Mpc) and $\rm 200\,km \cdot s^{-1}$ in recession velocity. Assuming that the dominant source of HI is the identified optical counterpart, we find an evidence of evolution in the HI content of galaxies over the last 4.2 Gyr. Our new high-redshift HI galaxy sample provides the opportunity to better investigate the evolution of cool gas in galaxies. A larger sample size in the future will allow us to refine our knowledge of the formation and evolution of galaxies.

We present the results of the optical identification and spectroscopic redshift measurements of 216 galaxy clusters detected in the SRG/eROSITA all-sky X-ray survey. The spectroscopic observations were performed in 2020-2023 with the 6-m BTA telescope at the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the 2.5-m telescope at the Caucasus Mountain Observatory of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute of the Moscow State University, the 1.6-m AZT-33IK telescope at the Sayan Solar Observatory of the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the 1.5-m Russian-Turkish telescope (RTT-150) at the TÜBİTAK Observatory. For all of the galaxy clusters presented here the spectroscopic redshift measurements have been obtained for the first time. Of these, 139 galaxy clusters have been detected for the first time in the SRG/eROSITA survey and 22 galaxy clusters are at redshifts $z_{spec} \gtrsim 0.7$, including three at $z_{spec} \gtrsim 1$. Deep direct images with the rizJK filters have also been obtained for four distant galaxy clusters at $z_{spec} > 0.7$. For these observations the most massive clusters are selected. Therefore, most of the galaxy clusters presented here most likely will be included in the cosmological samples of galaxy clusters from the SRG/eROSITA survey.

Planetary nebulae are one of the final stages in the evolution of low and intermediate mass stars. They occur in a variety of shapes. Older and fainter ones are generally more difficult to identify because of the lower surface brightness. This paper reports the serendipitous discovery of a new faint Galactic planetary nebula (PN), during a campaign to identify dwarf galaxies, companions of the spiral galaxy NGC 2403. We aim at confirming the nature as PN of a diffuse object identified in the Camelopardalis constellation. We obtained narrow-band filter images and spectra of the nebula and its central star with amateur and professional telescopes having diameters from 20 cm to 6 m. We detected a dense triangular nebula, surrounded by an elliptical region, named Cam nebula. They are part of a larger and fainter circular nebular structure, named TBG-1, at the centre of which we have identified the possible central star, a white dwarf with a temperature of about 22 000 K. The analysis of the spectrum made it possible to measure the physical characteristics of the nebula, in particular its electronic density and temperature. Analysis of the images, of the spectra of the nebula and of the central star confirm the PN nature of TBG-1, located at the distance of about 1 kpc. This work reaffirms the potential for fruitful collaborations between astronomers and amateur astronomers in the detection and study of new objects.

Optical circular polarization observations can directly test the particle composition in black holes jets. Here we report on the first observations of the BL Lac type object S4 0954+65 in high linear polarized states. While no circular polarization was detected, we were able to place upper limits of <0.5% at the 99.7% confidence. Using a simple model and our novel optical circular polarization observations we can constrain the allowed parameter space for the magnetic field strength and composition of the emitting particles. Our results favor models that require magnetic field strengths of only a few Gauss and models where the jet composition is dominated by electron-positron pairs. We discuss our findings in the context of typical magnetic field strength requirements for blazar emission models.

This implies the distance to KK242 of ~6.3 Mpc and its M_B = -10.5 mag. Its radial velocity, known from the Effelsberg radio telescope \HI\ observations, reveals, however, the difference with that of NGC6503, dV ~ 400 km/s. If real, this fact implies the substantial constraints on its origin. To clear-up the issue of KK242 radial velocity, we obtained with the SAO 6-m telescope spectra of its faint star-forming (SF) complex. H-alpha and H-beta emission is detected in two adjacent compact regions, the southern and northern, separated by ~2" (~60 pc). Their mean radial velocity is V_hel = -66 km/s, ~100 km/s lower than that of NGC6503. We use the HST Legacy Archive images and photometry of individual stars from the Extragalactic Distance Database, available for KK242, to identify in the SF complex the exciting hot stars, the probable BHeB and RHeB stars and a supernova remnant. We address, based on the possible range of its gas metallicity, the probable evolutionary paths of KK242. Using package Cloudy and parameters of the exciting B0V stars, we conclude that the observed flux ratio of [Sii] doublet to H-alpha is consistent with the value of 12+log(O/H) ~7.35+/-0.18 dex, expected for a stripped void dIrr galaxy.

We present the gMOSS (Galaxies of Medium-band One-meter Schmidt telescope Survey) catalog of $\sim$ 19,000 galaxies in 20 filters (4 broadband SDSS and 16 medium-band filters). We observed 2.386 $\mathrm{deg^2}$ on the central part of the HS47.5-22 field with the 1-m Schmidt telescope of the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory. The gMOSS is a complete flux-limited sample of galaxies with a threshold magnitude of $r$ SDSS $\le$ 22.5 AB. From photometric measurements with 16 medium-band filters and $u$ SDSS, we get spectral energy distributions for each object in the field, which are used for further analysis. Galaxy classification and photometric redshift estimation based on spectral template matching with ZEBRA software. The obtained redshift accuracy is $σ_\mathrm{NMAD} < 0.0043$. Using the SED-fitting CIGALE code, we obtained the main properties of the stellar population of galaxies, such as rest-frame $(u - r)_{\mathrm{res}}$ colour, stellar mass, extinction, and mass-weighted age with a precision of $0.16 \pm 0.07$ mag, $0.14 \pm 0.04$ dex, $0.27 \pm 0.1$ mag, and $0.08 \pm 0.04$ dex, respectively. Using a dust-corrected colour-mass diagram, we divided the full sample into populations of red and blue galaxies and considered the dependencies between stellar mass and age. Throughout cosmic time, red sequence galaxies remain older and more massive than blue cloud galaxies. The star formation history of a complete subsample of galaxies selected in the redshift range $0.05\le z\le0.015$ with <$\mathrm{log} M \mathrm{>}_\mathrm{[M_\odot]}$>8.3 shows an increase in the SFRD up to $z\sim3$, under the results obtained in earlier studies.

The study is about the quasars cosmological evolution. We used the medium-band photometric survey at the 1-m Schmidt telescope of the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory. The HS47-22 field with an area of 2.38 square degrees has been selected. We have classified objects and composed a sample of quasars using broadband photometric data and morphological classification from the DECaLS survey, infrared photometry from the WISE survey, spectroscopy from the SDSS survey, ROSAT X-ray data, FIRST radio data and stellar parallax data from the GAIA survey. We have compiled a sample of 682 quasars, determined their photometric redshifts from the medium-band photometric data, and calculated the absolute stellar magnitudes. The space density of quasars was calculated for different luminosity ranges at different redshifts using the $λ$-CDM model with $Ω_m = 0.3$ and $Ω_λ= 0.7$. In this paper, we present the comparison of our results with other works.

We present the first sample of tidal disruption events (TDEs) discovered during the SRG all-sky survey. These 13 events were selected among X-ray transients detected in the 0<l<180 deg hemisphere by eROSITA during its second sky survey (10 June - 14 December 2020) and confirmed by optical follow-up observations. The most distant event occurred at z=0.581. One TDE continued to brighten at least 6 months. The X-ray spectra are consistent with nearly critical accretion onto black holes of a few 10^3 to 10^8 M_Sun, although supercritical accretion is possibly taking place. In two TDEs, a spectral hardening is observed 6 months after the discovery. Four TDEs showed an optical brightening apart from the X-ray outburst. The other 9 TDEs demonstrate no optical activity. All 13 TDEs are optically faint, with Lopt/Lx<0.3 (Lopt and Lx being the g-band and 0.2-6 keV luminosity, respectively). We have constructed a TDE X-ray luminosity function, which can be fit by a power law with a slope of -0.6+/-0.2, similar to the trend observed for optically selected TDEs. The total rate is estimated at (1.1+/-0.5)10^-5 TDEs per galaxy per year, an order of magnitude lower than inferred from optical studies. This suggests that X-ray bright events constitute a minority of TDEs, consistent with models predicting that X-rays can only be observed from directions close to the axis of a thick accretion disk formed from the stellar debris. Our TDE detection threshold can be lowered by a factor of ~2, which should allow a detection of ~700 TDEs by the end of the SRG survey.

A new design of a detector plane of sub-millimetre thickness for an electromagnetic sampling calorimeter is presented. It is intended to be used in the luminometers LumiCal and BeamCal in future linear $e^+e^-$ collider experiments. The detector planes were produced utilising novel connectivity scheme technologies. They were installed in a compact prototype of the calorimeter and tested at DESY with an electron beam of energy 1-5 GeV. The performance of a prototype of a compact LumiCal comprising eight detector planes was studied. The effective Moli`ere radius at 5 GeV was determined to be (8.1 +/- 0.1 (stat) +/- 0.3 (syst)) mm, a value well reproduced by the Monte Carlo (MC) simulation (8.4 +/- 0.1) mm. The dependence of the effective Moli`ere radius on the electron energy in the range 1-5 GeV was also studied. Good agreement was obtained between data and MC simulation.

However, silicon as the most widespread detector material is marginally sensitive to photons with energy more than 30 keV. That's why the high-Z alternatives to silicon such as gallium arsenide and cadmium telluride are increasingly attracting attention of the community for the development of X-ray imaging systems in recent years. We present in this work the results of our investigations of the Timepix detectors bump-bonded with sensors made of gallium arsenide compensated by chromium (GaAs:Cr). The properties which are mostly important from the practical point of view: IV characteristics, charge transport characteristics, operational stability, homogeneity, temperature dependence as well as energy and spatial resolution are considered. Applicability of these detectors for spectroscopic X-ray imaging is discussed.

In this paper, we present results of a photometric and kinematic study for a sample of 13 edge-on spiral galaxies with pronounced integral-shape warps of their stellar discs. The global structure of the galaxies is analyzed on the basis of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) imaging, in the g, r and i passbands. Spectroscopic observations are obtained with the 6-m Special Astrophysical Observatory telescope. In general, galaxies of the sample are typical bright spiral galaxies satisfying the Tully-Fisher relation. Most of the galaxies reside in dense spatial environments and, therefore, tidal encounters are the most probable mechanism for generating their stellar warps. We carried out a detailed analysis of the galaxies and their warps and obtained the following main results: (i) maximum angles of stellar warps in our sample are about 20°; (ii) warps start, on average, between 2 and 3 exponential scale lengths of a disc; (iii) stronger warps start closer to the center, weak warps start farther; (iv) warps are asymmetric, with the typical degree of asymmetry of about several degrees (warp angle); (v) massive dark halo is likely to preclude the formation of strong and asymmetric warps.

The MARS scanner is designed for the x-ray spectroscopic study of samples with the aid of computer tomography methods. Computer tomography allows the reconstruction of slices of an investigated sample using a set of shadow projections obtained for different angles. Projections in the MARS scanner are produced using a cone x-ray beam geometry. Correct reconstruction in this scheme requires precise knowledge of several geometrical parameters of a tomograph, such as displacement of a rotation axis, x-ray source position with respect to a camera, and camera inclinations. Use of inaccurate parameters leads to a poor sample reconstruction. Non-ideal positioning of camera, x-ray source and cylindrical rotating frame (gantry) itself on which these parts are located, leads to the need for tomograph alignment. In this note we describe the alignment procedure that was used to get different geometrical corrections for the reconstruction. Also, several different estimations of the final spatial resolution for reconstructed images are presented.

This paper describes an iterative method of per-pixel energy calibration of hybrid pixel detectors with GaAs:Cr sensor and Timepix readout chip. A convolution of precisely measured spectra of characteristic X-rays of different metals with the resolution and the efficiency of the pixel detector is used for the calibration. The energy resolution of the detector is also measured during the calibration. The use of per-pixel calibration allows to achieve a good energy resolution of the Timepix detector with GaAs:Cr sensor: 8% and 13% at 60 keV and 20 keV, respectively.

Abstract:
Detector-plane prototypes of the very forward calorimetry of a future detector at an e+e- collider have been built and their performance was measured in an electron beam. The detector plane comprises silicon or GaAs pad sensors, dedicated front-end and ADC ASICs, and an FPGA for data concentration. Measurements of the signal-to-noise ratio and the response as a function of the position of the sens…

Measurements of the signal-to-noise ratio and the response as a function of the position of the sensor are presented. A deconvolution method is successfully applied, and a comparison of the measured shower shape as a function of the absorber depth with a Monte-Carlo simulation is given.

The reconstruction of tracks, leptons, photons, missing energy and jets is investigated, together with the performance of b-tagging and the trigger. The physics potential for a variety of interesting physics processes, within the Standard Model and beyond, is examined. The study comprises a series of notes based on simulations of the detector and physics processes, with particular emphasis given to the data expected from the first years of operation of the LHC at CERN.

Abstract:
RICE is designed to detect ultrahigh energy (>100 TeV) neutrinos from astrophysical sources. It will consist of an array of compact radio (100 to 1000 MHz) receivers buried in ice at the South Pole. During the 1995-96 and 1996-97 austral summers, several receivers transmitters were deployed in bore holes drilled for the AMANDA project, at depths of 141 to 260 m.
