Differential cross sections and photon beam asymmetries of $ηいーた$ photoproduction on the proton at $E_γがんま$ = 1.3-2.4 GeV

Abstract: We have carried out exclusive measurements for the photoproduction of an $ηいーた$ meson from a proton target with an egg-shaped calorimeter made of BGO crystals (BGOegg) and forward charged-particle detectors at the SPring-8 LEPS2 beamline. The differential cross sections and photon beam asymmetries of the $γがんまp \to ηいーたp$ reaction are measured in a center-of-mass energy ($W$) range of $1.82$-$2.32$ GeV and… ▽ More We have carried out exclusive measurements for the photoproduction of an $ηいーた$ meson from a proton target with an egg-shaped calorimeter made of BGO crystals (BGOegg) and forward charged-particle detectors at the SPring-8 LEPS2 beamline. The differential cross sections and photon beam asymmetries of the $γがんまp \to ηいーたp$ reaction are measured in a center-of-mass energy ($W$) range of $1.82$-$2.32$ GeV and a polar angle range of $-1.0 < \cos{θしーた^ηいーた_{\mathrm{c.m.}}} < 0.6$. The reaction is identified by selecting a proton and two $γがんま$'s produced by an $ηいーた$-meson decay. The kinematic fit method was employed to select the reaction candidate with the confidence level larger than $1$\%. A bump structure at $W$ = $2.0$-$2.3$ GeV in the differential cross section is confirmed at extremely backward $ηいーた$ polar angles, where the existing data are inconsistent with each other. This bump structure is likely associated with high-spin resonances that couple with $s\bar{s}$ quarks. The results of the photon beam asymmetries in a wide $ηいーた$ polar angle range are new for the photon beam energies exceeding $2.1$ GeV. These results are not reproduced by the existing partial wave analyses. They provide an additional constraint to nucleon resonance studies at high energies. △ Less

Abstract: Coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the deuteron, $γがんま{d}${$\to$}$πぱい^0ηいーた{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section demonstrates a rapid rise below 1 GeV. The data are underestimated by the existing theoretical calculations based on quasi-free $πぱい^0 ηいーた$ photoproduction on the nucleon… ▽ More Coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the deuteron, $γがんま{d}${$\to$}$πぱい^0ηいーた{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section demonstrates a rapid rise below 1 GeV. The data are underestimated by the existing theoretical calculations based on quasi-free $πぱい^0 ηいーた$ photoproduction on the nucleon followed by deuteron coalescence. At the same time, the data are rather well reproduced by the calculations taking into account the final-state interaction. We have also measured for the first time the differential cross sections: the $πぱい^0 ηいーた$ invariant-mass distribution $dσしぐま/dM_{πぱいηいーた}$, the $πぱい^0 d$ invariant-mass distribution $dσしぐま/dM_{πぱいd}$, the $ηいーたd$ invariant-mass distribution $dσしぐま/dM_{ηいーたd}$, and the distribution over the deuteron emission angle $dσしぐま/dΩおめが_d$ in the overall center-of-mass frame. The measured cross section $dσしぐま/dΩおめが_d$ does not exhibit strongly backward-peaking behavior predicted by the calculations. At all incident energies, an increase in $dσしぐま/dM_{ηいーたd}$ near the $ηいーたd$ threshold is observed, which indicates a bound or virtual $ηいーたd$ state resulting from a strong attraction between $ηいーた$ and a deuteron. The possibilities of using coherent $πぱい^0ηいーた$ photoproduction on a nucleus to study the $ηいーた$-nuclear interaction are also discussed. △ Less

SPring-8 LEPS2 beamline: A facility to produce a multi-GeV photon beam via laser Compton scattering

Abstract: We have constructed a new laser-Compton-scattering facility, called the LEPS2 beamline, at the 8-GeV electron storage ring, SPring-8. This facility provides a linearly polarized photon beam in a tagged energy range of 1.3--2.4 GeV. Thanks to a small divergence of the low-emittance storage-ring electrons, the tagged photon beam has a size (sigma) suppressed to about 4 mm even after it travels about… ▽ More We have constructed a new laser-Compton-scattering facility, called the LEPS2 beamline, at the 8-GeV electron storage ring, SPring-8. This facility provides a linearly polarized photon beam in a tagged energy range of 1.3--2.4 GeV. Thanks to a small divergence of the low-emittance storage-ring electrons, the tagged photon beam has a size (sigma) suppressed to about 4 mm even after it travels about 130 m to the experimental building that is independent of the storage ring building and contains large detector systems. This beamline is designed to achieve a photon beam intensity higher than that of the first laser-Compton-scattering beamline at SPring-8 by adopting the simultaneous injection of up to four high-power laser beams and increasing a transmittance for the long photon-beam path up to about 77%. Resonance-like structure near the $ηいーたd$ threshold in the $γがんま{d}${$\to$}$πぱい^0ηいーた{d}$ reaction

Abstract: To investigate the interaction between the nucleon $N$ and nucleon resonance $N(1535)1/2^-$, the $ηいーたd$ threshold structure connected to the isoscalar $S$-wave $N$-$N(1535)1/2^-$ system has been experimentally studied in the $γがんま{d}${$\to$}$πぱい^0ηいーた{d}$ reaction at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. A strong enhancement is observed near the $ηいーたd$ threshold over the th… ▽ More To investigate the interaction between the nucleon $N$ and nucleon resonance $N(1535)1/2^-$, the $ηいーたd$ threshold structure connected to the isoscalar $S$-wave $N$-$N(1535)1/2^-$ system has been experimentally studied in the $γがんま{d}${$\to$}$πぱい^0ηいーた{d}$ reaction at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. A strong enhancement is observed near the $ηいーたd$ threshold over the three-body phase-space contribution in the $ηいーたd$ invariant-mass distribution. An analysis incorporating the known isovector resonance $\mathcal{D}_{12}$ with a spin-parity of $2^+$ in the $πぱい^0d$ channel reveals the existence of a narrow isoscalar resonance-like structure with $1^-$ in the $ηいーたd$ system. Using a Flatté parametrization, the mass is found to be $2.427_{-0.006}^{+0.013}$ GeV, close to the $ηいーたd$ threshold, and the width is $\left(0.029_{-0.029}^{+0.006}{\rm\ GeV}\right)+\left(0.00_{-0.00}^{+0.41}\right) p_ηいーたc$, where $p_ηいーた$ denotes the $ηいーた$ momentum in the rest frame of the $ηいーたd$ system. The observed structure would be attributed to a predicted isoscalar $1^-$ $ηいーたNN$ bound state from $ηいーたNN$ and $πぱいNN$ coupled-channel calculation, or an $ηいーたd$ virtual state owing to strong $ηいーたd$ attraction. △ Less

Abstract: We measured missing mass spectrum of the $^{12}{\rm C}(γがんま,p)$ reaction for the first time in coincidence with potential decay products from $ηいーた'$ bound nuclei. We tagged an ($ηいーた+p$) pair associated with the $ηいーた'N\toηいーたN$ process in a nucleus. After applying kinematical selections to reduce backgrounds, no signal events were observed in the bound-state region. Abstract: Coherent double neutral-pion photoproduction on the deuteron, $γがんま{d}${$\to$}$πぱい^0πぱい^0{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from 0.75 to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section as a function of the $γがんま{d}$ center-of-mass energy shows resonance-like behavior, which peaks at approximately 2.47 and 2.63 GeV. The measured angular distribution of deuteron emission is rather fla… ▽ More Coherent double neutral-pion photoproduction on the deuteron, $γがんま{d}${$\to$}$πぱい^0πぱい^0{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from 0.75 to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section as a function of the $γがんま{d}$ center-of-mass energy shows resonance-like behavior, which peaks at approximately 2.47 and 2.63 GeV. The measured angular distribution of deuteron emission is rather flat, which cannot be reproduced by the kinematics of quasi-free $πぱい^0πぱい^0$ production with deuteron coalescence. In $πぱい^0d $ invariant-mass distributions, a clear peak is observed at $2.14{\pm}0.01$ GeV$/c^2$ with a width of $0.09{\pm}0.01$ GeV$/c^2$. The spin-parity of this state is restricted to $1^+$, $2^+$ or $3^-$ from the angular distributions of the two $πぱい^0$s. The present work shows strong evidence for the existence of an isovector dibaryon resonance with a mass of 2.14 GeV$/c^2$. The $2^+$ assignment is consistent with the theoretically predicted ${\cal{D}}_{12}$ state, and also with the energy dependence of the $πぱい{d}$ partial-wave amplitude $^3\!P_2$ for the $πぱい^{\pm}d${$\to$}$πぱい^{\pm}d$ and $πぱい^+d${$\to$}${pp}$ reactions. △ Less

Abstract: Differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries for the gamma p -> pi- Delta++(1232) reaction have been measured for 0.7<cos(theta)<1 and Egamma=1.5-2.95 GeV at SPring-8/LEPS. The first-ever high statistics cross section data are obtained in this kinematical region, and the asymmetry data for 1.5<Egamma(GeV)<2.8 are obtained for the first time. This reaction has a unique feature for studyi… ▽ More Differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries for the gamma p -> pi- Delta++(1232) reaction have been measured for 0.7<cos(theta)<1 and Egamma=1.5-2.95 GeV at SPring-8/LEPS. The first-ever high statistics cross section data are obtained in this kinematical region, and the asymmetry data for 1.5<Egamma(GeV)<2.8 are obtained for the first time. This reaction has a unique feature for studying the production mechanisms of a pure $u\bar{u}$ quark pair in the final state from the proton. Although there is no distinct peak structure in the cross sections, a non-negligible excess over the theoretical predictions is observed at Egamma=1.5-1.8 GeV. The asymmetries are found to be negative in most of the present kinematical regions, suggesting the dominance of pi-exchange in the t-channel. The negative asymmetries at forward meson production angles are different from the asymmetries previously measured for the photoproduction reactions which produce a $d\bar{d}$ or an $s\bar{s}$ quark pair in the final state. Advanced theoretical models introducing nucleon resonances and additional unnatural parity exchanges are needed to reproduce the present data. △ Less

The differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries are measured at forward $K^{+}$ production angles using linearly polarized tagged-photon beams in the range of $E_γがんま=1.5$--3.0 GeV. With increasing photon energy, the cross sections for both $γがんまp \rightarrow K^{+}Λらむだ$ and $γがんまp \rightarrow K^{+}Σしぐま^{0}$ reactions decrease slowly. Distinct narrow structures in the production cross section have not been found at $E_γがんま=1.5$--3.0 GeV. The forward peaking in the angular distributions of cross sections, a characteristic feature of $t$-channel exchange, is observed for the production of $Λらむだ$ in the whole observed energy range. A lack of similar feature for $Σしぐま^{0}$ production reflects a less dominant role of $t$-channel contribution in this channel. The photon-beam asymmetries remain positive for both reactions, suggesting the dominance of $K^{*}$ exchange in the $t$ channel. These asymmetries increase gradually with the photon energy, and have a maximum value of +0.6 for both reactions. Comparison with theoretical predictions based on the Regge trajectory in the $t$ channel and the contributions of nucleon resonances indicates the major role of $t$-channel contributions as well as non-negligible effects of nucleon resonances in accounting for the reaction mechanism of hyperon photoproduction in this photon energy regime. △ Less

First measurement of coherent $φふぁい$-meson photoproduction from helium-4 near threshold

Thanks to the target with spin-parity $J^{P} = 0^{+}$, unnatural-parity exchanges are prohibited, and thus natural-parity exchanges can be inve… ▽ More The differential cross sections and decay angular distributions for coherent $φふぁい$-meson photoproduction from helium-4 have been measured for the first time at forward angles with linearly polarized photons in the energy range $E_γがんま = \text{1.685-2.385 GeV}$. Thanks to the target with spin-parity $J^{P} = 0^{+}$, unnatural-parity exchanges are prohibited, and thus natural-parity exchanges can be investigated clearly. The decay asymmetry with respect to photon polarization is shown to be very close to the maximal value. This ensures the dominance ($> 94\%$) of natural-parity exchanges in this reaction. To evaluate the contribution from natural-parity exchanges to the forward cross section ($θしーた= 0^\circ$) for the $γがんまp \rightarrow φふぁいp$ reaction near the threshold, the energy dependence of the forward cross section ($θしーた= 0^\circ$) for the $γがんま{^{4}\text{He}} \rightarrow φふぁい{^{4}\text{He}}$ reaction was analyzed. The comparison to $γがんまp \rightarrow φふぁいp$ data suggests that enhancement of the forward cross section arising from natural-parity exchanges, and/or destructive interference between natural-parity and unnatural-parity exchanges is needed in the $γがんまp \rightarrow φふぁいp$ reaction near the threshold. △ Less

$φふぁい$ photoproduction on the proton at $E_γがんま$ = 1.5 - 2.9 GeV

Abstract: Differential cross sections at $t=t_{\text{min}}$ and decay asymmetries for the $γがんまp\rightarrowφふぁいp$ reaction have been measured using linearly polarized photons in the range 1.5 to 2.9 GeV. These cross sections were used to determine the Pomeron strength factor. The cross sections and decay asymmetries are consistently described by the $t$-channel Pomeron and pseudoscalar exchange model in the… ▽ More Differential cross sections at $t=t_{\text{min}}$ and decay asymmetries for the $γがんまp\rightarrowφふぁいp$ reaction have been measured using linearly polarized photons in the range 1.5 to 2.9 GeV. Abstract: Differential cross sections and photon beam asymmetries for the gamma p -> pi+ n reaction have been measured for 0.6<cos(theta)<1 and Egamma=1.5-2.95 GeV at SPring-8/LEPS. The cross sections monotonically decrease as the photon beam energy increases for 0.6<cos(theta)<0.9. The relative phases between $φふぁい$ and $Λらむだ(1520)$ production amplitudes were obtained in the kinematic region where the two resonances overlap. The statistical significance of the peak calculated from a shape analysis is 5.1 σしぐま, and the differential cross-section for the γがんまn \to K^- Θしーた^+ reaction is estimated to be 12 +- 2 nb/sr in the photon energy range from 2.0 GeV to 2.4 GeV in the LEPS angular range by assuming the isotropic production of the Θしーた^+ in the γがんまn center-of-mass system. Abstract: Differential cross sections for $γがんまp \to K^+Λらむだ(1405)$ and $γがんまp \to K^+Σしぐま^0(1385)$ reactions have been measured in the photon energy range from 1.5 to 2.4 GeV and the angular range of $0.8<\cos(Θしーた)<1.0$ for the $K^+$ scattering angle in the center-of-mass system.
