Tight contact structures on hyperbolic homology 3-spheres
Abstract: We produce a large class of hyperbolic homology 3-spheres admitting arbitrarily many distinct tight contact structures. We also produce a sub-class admitting arbitrarily many distinct tight contact structures within the same homotopy class of oriented plane distributions. As a corollary, we give a recipe to construct hyperbolic L-spaces admitting arbitrarily many distinct tight contact structures.… ▽ More

Indiscrete Common Commensurators

Commensurated hyperbolic subgroups
Abstract: We show that if H is a non-elementary hyperbolic commensurated subgroup of infinite index in a hyperbolic group G, then H is virtually a free product of hyperbolic surface groups and free groups. We prove that whenever a one-ended hyperbolic group H is a fiber of a non-trivial hyperbolic bundle then H virtually splits over a 2-ended subgroup.

Greenberg-Shalom's Commensurator Hypothesis and Applications
Abstract: We discuss many surprising implications of a positive answer to a question raised in some cases by Greenberg in the $`70$s and more generally by Shalom in the early $2000$s. Matings, holomorphic correspondences, and a Bers slice
Abstract: There are two frameworks for mating Kleinian groups with rational maps on the Riemann sphere: the algebraic correspondence framework due to Bullett-Penrose-Lomonaco \cite{BP94,BL20a} and the simultaneous uniformization mating framework of \cite{MM1}. Algebraic Ending Laminations and Quasiconvexity
Abstract: We explicate a number of notions of algebraic laminations existing in the literature, particularly in the context of an exact sequence $$1\to H\to G \to Q \to 1 $$ of hyperbolic groups. These laminations arise in different contexts: existence of Cannon-Thurston maps; closed geodesics exiting ends of manifolds; dual to actions on $\R-$trees. We use the relationship between these laminations to pr… ▽ More

A splitting theorem for good complexifications
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to produce restrictions on fundamental groups of manifolds admitting good complexifications by proving the following Cheeger-Gromoll type splitting theorem: Any closed manifold $M$ admitting a good complexification has a finite-sheeted regular covering $M_1$ such that $M_1$ admits a fiber bundle structure with base $(S^1)^k$ and fiber $N$ that admits a good complexific… ▽ More

Controlled Floyd Separation and Non Relatively Hyperbolic Groups
Abstract: We introduce the notion of controlled Floyd separation between geodesic rays starting at the identity in a finitely generated group G. Two such geodesic rays are said to be Floyd separated with respect to quasigeodesics if the (Floyd) length of c-quasigeodesics (for fixed but arbitrary c) joining points on the geodesic rays is asymptotically bounded away from zero. This is always satisfied by Mors… ▽ More

H_1-semistability for projective groups
Abstract: We initiate the study of the asymptotic topology of groups that can be realized as fundamental groups of smooth complex projective varieties with holomorphically convex universal covers (these are called here as holomorphically convex groups). We prove the $H_1$-semistability conjecture of Geoghegan for holomorphically convex groups. In view of a theorem of Eyssidieux, Katzarkov, Pantev and Ramach… ▽ More

Quasiprojective three-manifold groups and complexification of three-manifolds
Abstract: We characterize the quasiprojective groups that appear as fundamental groups of compact $3$-manifolds (with or without boundary). We also characterize all closed $3$-manifolds that admit good complexifications. These answer questions of Friedl--Suciu, \cite{fs}, and Totaro \cite{tot}

The Fujiki class and positive degree maps
Abstract: We show that a map between complex-analytic manifolds, at least one of which is in the Fujiki class, is a biholomorphism under a natural condition on the second cohomologies. We use this to establish that, with mild restrictions, a certain relation of "domination" introduced by Gromov is in fact a partial order.

Limits of limit sets II: Geometrically Infinite Groups
Abstract: We show that for a strongly convergent sequence of purely loxodromic finitely generated Kleinian groups with incompressible ends, Cannon-Thurston maps, viewed as maps from a fixed base limit set to the Riemann sphere, converge uniformly. For algebraically convergent sequences we show that there exist examples where even pointwise convergence of Cannon-Thurston maps fails.

Homotopical Height
Abstract: Given a group $G$ and a class of manifolds $\CC$ (e.g. symplectic, contact, Kähler etc), it is an old problem to find a manifold $M_G \in \CC$ whose fundamental group is $G$. This article refines it: for a group $G$ and a positive integer $r$ find $M_G \in \CC$ such that $
π _1(M_G)=G$ and $π _i(M_G)=0$ for $1<i<r$. We thus provide a unified point of view systematizing known and new results in this d… ▽ MoreSubmitted 7 December, 2014; v1 submitted 4 February, 2013; originally announced February 2013.

Low dimensional projective groups
Abstract: We initiate the study of holomorphically convex groups: groups that can be realized as fundamental groups of smooth complex projective varieties with holomorphically convex universal covers. If $G$ is a holomorphically convex group of cohomological dimension two, we show that $G$ is isomorphic to the fundamental group of a compact Riemann surface. As a consequence, we show that if a linear group… ▽ More
