The Fe1+yTe1-xSex series of materials is one of the prototype families of Fe-based superconductors. To provide further insight into these materials we present systematic inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the low energy spin excitations for x=0.27, 0.36, 0.40, 0.49. These measurements show an evolution of incommensurate spin excitations towards the (1/2 1/2 0) wave vector with doping. Concentrations (x=0.40 and 0.49) which exhibit the most robust superconducting properties have spin excitations closest to (1/2 1/2 0) and also exhibit a strong spin resonance in the spin excitation spectrum below Tc. The resonance signal appears to be closer to (1/2 1/2 0) than the underlying spin excitations. We discuss the possible relationship between superconductivity and spin excitations at the (1/2 1/2 0) wave vector and the role that interstitial Fe may play.

The complete magnetic and multiferroic phase diagram of Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$WO$_4$ single crystals is investigated by means of magnetic, heat capacity, and polarization experiments. We show that the ferroelectric polarization $\overrightarrow{P}$ in the multiferroic state abruptly changes its direction twice upon increasing Co content, x. At x$_{c1}$=0.075, $\overrightarrow{P}$ rotates from the $b-$axis into the $a-c$ plane and at x$_{c2}$=0.15 it flips back to the $b-$axis. The origin of the multiple polarization flops is identified as an effect of the Co anisotropy on the orientation and shape of the spin helix leading to thermodynamic instabilities caused by the decrease of the magnitude of the polarization in the corresponding phases. A qualitative description of the ferroelectric polarization is derived by taking into account the intrachain ($c-$axis) as well as the interchain ($a-$axis) exchange pathways connecting the magnetic ions. In a narrow Co concentration range (0.1$\leq$x$\leq$0.15), an intermediate phase, sandwiched between the collinear high-temperature and the helical low-temperature phases, is discovered. The new phase exhibits a collinear and commensurate spin modulation similar to the low-temperature magnetic structure of MnWO$_4$.

The spin-wave excitations of the multiferroic $\rm MnWO_4$ have been measured in its low-temperature collinear commensurate phase using high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering. These excitations can be well described by a Heisenberg model with competing long-range exchange interactions and a single-ion anisotropy term. The magnetic interactions are strongly frustrated within the zigzag spin chain along c axis and between chains along the a axis, while the coupling between spin along the b axis is much weaker. The balance of these interactions results in the noncollinear incommensurate spin structure associated with the magnetoelectric effect, and the perturbation of the magnetic interactions leads to the observed rich phase diagrams of the chemically-doped materials. This delicate balance can also be tuned by the application of external electric or magnetic fields to achieve magnetoelectric control of this type of materials.

This contribution, which has yet to be observed with INS, is shown to embody the magnetic pseudogap effects. As such, it explains the long-standing puzzle of pseudogap effects missing from cuprate INS data, dominated by stripe fluctuations, for the dynamic susceptibility at low energies. For La_(1.86)Sr_(0.14)CuO_(4) and YBa_(2)Ba_(3)O_(6.5), the new term is the chief contributor to nuclear spin lattice relaxation at T >> T_(c).

We report the remarkably robust ferroelectric state in the multiferroic compound Mn$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$WO$_4$. The substitution of the magnetic Mn$^{2+}$ with nonmagnetic Zn$^{2+}$ reduces the magnetic exchange and provides control of the various magnetic and multiferroic states of MnWO$_4$. Only 5 % of Zn substitution results in a complete suppression of the frustrated collinear (paraelectric) low temperature phase. The helical magnetic and ferroelectric phase develops as the ground state. The multiferroic state is stable up to a high level of substitution of more than 50 %. The magnetic, thermodynamic, and dielectric properties as well as the ferroelectric polarization of single crystals of Mn$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$WO$_4$ are studied for different substitutions up to x=0.5. The magnetic phases have been identified in single crystal neutron scattering experiments. The ferroelectric polarization scales with the neutron intensity of the incommensurate peak of the helical phase.

The magnetic and multiferroic phase diagram of Mn$_{0.85}$Co$_{0.15}$WO$_4$ single crystals is investigated by means of magnetic, heat capacity, dielectric, polarization, and neutron scattering experiments. Three magnetic phase transitions are detected through distinct anomalies in all physical quantities. The ferroelectric polarization is observed only along the b-axis below 10 K but not along the a-axis as recently suggested. The magnetic phases studied by neutron scattering are very complex. Up to four different magnetic structures, partially coexisting at certain temperature ranges, have been identified. Upon decreasing temperature two commensurate phases (AF4, AF1) are followed by an incommensurate phase (AF5) and a second incommensurate phase (AF2) is detected as a minor phase. The ferroelectric polarization is possibly associated with both (AF2 and AF5) phases.

The nature of the superconducting state in the recently discovered Fe-based superconductors1-3 is the subject of intense scrutiny. Neutron scattering investigations have already elucidated a strong correlation between magnetism and superconductivity in the form of a spin resonance in the magnetic excitation spectrum4-7. A central unanswered question concerns the nature of the normal state spin fluctuations which may be responsible for the pairing mechanism. Here we show inelastic neutron scattering measurements of Fe1.04Te0.73Se0.27, not superconducting in bulk, and FeTe0.51Se0.49, a bulk superconductor. These measurements demonstrate that the spin fluctuation spectrum is dominated by two-dimensional incommensurate excitations near the (1/2,1/2) (square lattice (pi,0)) wavevector, the wavevector of interest in other Fe-based superconductors, that extend to energies at least as high as 300 meV. Most importantly, the spin excitations in Fe1+yTe1-xSex exhibit four-fold symmetry about the (1,0) (square lattice (pi,pi)) wavevector and are described by the identical wavevector as the normal state spin excitations in the high-TC cuprates8-12 demonstrating a commonality between the magnetism in these classes of materials which perhaps extends to a common origin for superconductivity.

A second type of unusual magnetic order is observed only in the YBa2Cu3O6.6 single crystal. This magnetism has an ordered magnetic moment that is quantitatively consistent with the neutron experiments, but is confined to just a small volume of the sample (~ 3%). Our findings do not support theories that ascribe the pseudogap to a state characterized by loop-current order, but instead indicate that dilute impurity phases are the source of the unusual magnetic orders in YBa2Cu3Oy.

Fe(Te0.5Se0.5) is a particularly simple system whose planes are isostructural to the FeAs layers found in the originally discovered superconductors of this type. We report here neutron scattering measurements on this material that provide an understanding of the superconductivity. Since the information about the Fermi surface is available both from photoemission and band structure calculations for FeTe, FeSe and other related materials the neutron spectra can be used to see if the itinerant electron picture is valid. The results are consistent with a picture where there are both electron and hole Fermi surfaces that make exact (pi,pi) transitions possible. This would normally favor either a spin or charge density wave state. However, our measurements show the extent of the region where (pi,pi) transitions take place and demonstrate that there are a much larger number of transitions near pi,pi). The near (pi,pi) transitions are observed both above and below Tc and are expected to be strongly pairing. The superconductivity can be attributed to these excitations while the exactly (pi,pi) transitions produce the narrow resonance excitation that appears below Tc.

However, optimally cobalt doped samples show a quasi-two-dimensional spin excitation centered at the (0.5, 0.5, L) wavevector, "the spin resonance peak", that is strongly tied to the onset of superconductivity. By inelastic neutron scattering on single crystals we show the similarities and differences of the spin excitations in BaFe1.84Co0.16As2, with respect to the spin excitations in the high-temperature superconducting cuprates. As in the cuprates the resonance occurs as an enhancement to a part of the spin excitation spectrum which extends to higher energy transfer and higher temperature. However, unlike in the cuprates, the resonance peak in this compound is asymmetric in energy.

Based on the observed dispersion relation, we estimate the effective magnetic exchange coupling using a Heisenberg model. On warming across $T_{N} $, the low temperature spin gap rapidly closes, with weak critical scattering and spin-spin correlations in the paramagnetic state. The antiferromagnetic order in SrFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is therefore consistent with a first order phase transition, similar to the structural lattice distortion.

In high-transition temperature (high-Tc) copper oxides, it is generally believed that antiferromagnetism plays a fundamental role in the superconducting mechanism because superconductivity occurs when mobile electrons or holes are doped into the antiferromagnetic parent compounds. The recent discovery of superconductivity in the rare-earth (R) iron-based oxide systems [RO1-xFxFeAs] has generated enormous interest because these materials are the first noncopper oxide superconductors with Tc exceeding 50 K. The parent (nonsuperconducting) LaOFeAs material is metallic but shows anomalies near 150 K in both resistivity and dc magnetic susceptibility. While optical conductivity and theoretical calculations suggest that LaOFeAs exhibits a spin-density-wave (SDW) instability that is suppressed with doping electrons to form superconductivity, there has been no direct evidence of the SDW order. Here we use neutron scattering to demonstrate that LaOFeAs undergoes an abrupt structural distortion below ~150 K, changing the symmetry from tetragonal (space group P4/nmm) to monoclinic (space group P112/n) at low temperatures, and then followed with the development of long range SDW-type antiferromagnetic order at ~134 K with a small moment but simple magnetic structure. Doping the system with flourine suppresses both the magnetic order and structural distortion in favor of superconductivity. Therefore, much like high-Tc copper oxides, the superconducting regime in these Fe-based materials occurs in close proximity to a long-range ordered antiferromagnetic ground state. We found the critical exponent for the magnetic neutron intensity to be 2$β$ =0.37$\pm$ 0.12. This is the proper range for the class of transition that has no specific heat divergence possibly explaining why none is found at the pseudogap transition.

In contrast to earlier work on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.5}$ ($T_c=58$ K), where the prominent features in the magnetic spectra consist of a sharp collective magnetic excitation termed ``resonance'' and a large ($\hbarω\approx 15$ meV) superconducting spin gap, we find that the spin excitations in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.45}$ are gapless and have a much broader resonance. Our detailed mapping of magnetic scattering along the $a^\ast$/$b^\ast$-axis directions at different energies reveals that spin excitations are unisotropic and consistent with the ``hourglass''-like dispersion along the $a^\ast$-axis direction near the resonance, but they are isotropic at lower energies. Since a fundamental change in the low-temperature normal state of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+y}$ when superconductivity is suppressed takes place at $y\sim0.5$ with a metal-to-insulator crossover (MIC), where the ground state transforms from a metallic to an insulating-like phase, our results suggest a clear connection between the large change in spin excitations and the MIC. The resonance therefore is a fundamental feature of metallic ground state superconductors and a consequence of high-$T_c$ superconductivity.

Understanding the magnetic excitations in high-transition temperature (high-$T_c$) copper oxides is important because they may mediate the electron pairing for superconductivity. By determining the wavevector ({\bf Q}) and energy ($\hbarω$) dependence of the magnetic excitations, one can calculate the change in the exchange energy available to the superconducting condensation energy. For the high-$T_c$ superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$, the most prominent feature in the magnetic excitations is the resonance. Although the resonance has been suggested to contribute a major part of the superconducting condensation, the accuracy of such an estimation has been in doubt because the resonance is only a small portion of the total magnetic scattering. Here we report an extensive mapping of magnetic excitations for YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.95}$ ($T_c\approx 93$ K). Using the absolute intensity measurements of the full spectra, we estimate the change in the magnetic exchange energy between the normal and superconducting states and find it to be about 15 times larger than the superconducting condensation energy. Our results thus indicate that the change in the magnetic exchange energy is large enough to provide the driving force for high-$T_c$ superconductivity in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.95}$.

The effect of electron-doping is to cause a wave vector ($Q$) broadening in the low-energy ($\hbarω\le 80$ meV) commensurate spin fluctuations at ($π$,$π$) and to suppress the intensity of spin-wave-like excitations at high energies ($\hbarω\ge 100$ meV). This leads to a substantial redistribution in the spectrum of the local dynamical spin susceptibility $χ^{\prime\prime}(ω)$, and reveals a new energy scale similar to that of the lightly hole-doped YB$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.353}$ ($T_c=18$ K).

We present comprehensive neutron scattering studies of nonsuperconducting and superconducting electron-doped Pr0.88LaCe0.12CuO4(PLCCO). At zero field, the transition from antiferromagnetic (AF) as-grown PLCCO to superconductivity without static antiferromagnetism can be achieved by annealing the sample in pure Ar at different temperatures, which also induces an epitaxial (Pr,La,Ce)2O3 phase as an impurity. When the superconductivity first appears in PLCCO, a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) spin-density-wave (SDW) order is also induced, and both coexist with the residual three-dimensional (3D) AF state. A magnetic field applied along the [-1,1,0] direction parallel to the CuO2 plane induces a ``spin-flop'' transition, where the noncollinear AF spin structure of PLCCO is transformed into a collinear one. The spin-flop transition is continuous in semiconducting PLCCO, but gradually becomes sharp with increasing doping and the appearance of superconductivity. A c-axis aligned magnetic field that suppresses the superconductivity also enhances the quasi-2D SDW order at (0.5,0.5,0) for underdoped PLCCO. However, there is no effect on the 3D AF order in either superconducting or nonsuperconducting samples. Since the same field along the [-1,1,0] direction in the CuO2 plane has no (or little) effect on the superconductivity, (0.5,0.5,0) and (Pr,La,Ce)2O3 impurity positions, we conclude that the c-axis field-induced effect is intrinsic to PLCCO and arises from the suppression of superconductivity.

We use neutron scattering to demonstrate that electron-doped superconducting Pr0.88LaCe0.12CuO4 in the underdoped regime is electronically phase separated in the ground state, showing the coexistence of a superconducting phase with a three-dimensional antiferromagnetically ordered phase and a quasi-two-dimensional spin density wave modulation. The Neel temperature of both antiferromagnetic phases decreases linearly with increasing superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and vanishes when optimal superconductivity is achieved. These results indicate that the electron-doped copper oxides are close to a quantum critical point, where the delicate energetic balance between different competing states leads to microscopic heterogeneity.

Upon doping the CuO$_2$ planes in Nd$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (NCO) with electrons by Ce substitution, the most significant change in the GDOS is the softening of the highest phonon branches associated with the Cu-O bond stretching and out-of-plane oxygen vibration modes. However, the softening occurs within the first few percent of Ce-doping and is not related to the electron doping induced nonsuperconducting-superconducting transition (NST) at $x\approx 0.12$. These results suggest that the electron-lattice coupling in the $n$-type high-$T_c$ superconductors is different from that in the $p$-type materials.

Polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction has been used to search for magnetic order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ superconductors. Most of the measurements were made on a high quality crystal of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$. It is shown that this crystal has highly ordered ortho-II chain order, and a sharp superconducting transition. Inelastic scattering measurements display a very clean spin-gap and pseudogap with any intensity at 10 meV being 50 times smaller than the resonance intensity. The crystal shows a complicated magnetic order that appears to have three components. A magnetic phase is found at high temperatures that seems to stem from an impurity with a moment that is in the $a$-$b$ plane, but disordered on the crystal lattice. A second ordering occurs near the pseudogap temperature that has a shorter correlation length than the high temperature phase and a moment direction that is at least partly along the c-axis of the crystal. Its moment direction, temperature dependence, and Bragg intensities suggest that it may stem from orbital ordering of the $d$-density wave (DDW) type. An additional intensity increase occurs below the superconducting transition. The magnetic intensity in these phases does not change noticeably in a 7 Tesla magnetic field aligned approximately along the c-axis. Searches for magnetic order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$ show no signal while a small magnetic intensity is found in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.45}$ that is consistent with c-axis directed magnetic order. The results are contrasted with other recent neutron measurements.

The driving force for a striped phase is the charge distribution, which self-organizes itself into linear regions. In the highest $T_c$ materials such regions are not static but fluctuate in time. Neutrons, having no charge, can not directly observe these fluctuations but they can be observed indirectly by their effect on the phonons. Neutron scattering measurements have been made using a specialized technique to study the phonon line shapes in four crystals with oxygen doping levels varying from highly underdoped to optimal doping. It is shown that fluctuating charge stripes exist over the whole doping range, and become visible below temperatures somewhat higher than the pseudogap temperature.

We establish the doping dependence of the spin gap in the superconducting state, the resonance energy, and the incommensurability of the spin fluctuations. One of the most striking universal properties of the high-transition-temperature (high-$T_c$) superconductors is that they are all derived from the hole-doping of their insulating antiferromagnetic (AF) parent compounds. From the outset, the intimate relationship between magnetism and superconductivity in these copper-oxides has intrigued researchers. Evidence for this link comes from neutron scattering experiments that show the unambiguous presence of short-range AF correlations (excitations) in cuprate superconductors. Even so, the role of such excitations in the pairing mechanism and superconductivity is still a subject of controversy. For YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$, where $x$ controls the hole-doping level, the most prominent feature in the magnetic excitations spectra is the ``resonance''. Here we show that for underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$, where $x$ and $T_c$ are below the optimal values, modest magnetic fields suppress the resonance significantly, much more so for fields approximately perpendicular rather than parallel to the CuO$_2$ planes. Our results indicate that the resonance measures pairing and phase coherence, suggesting that magnetism plays an important role in the superconductivity of cuprates. The persistence of a field effect above $T_c$ favors mechanisms with preformed pairs in the normal state of underdoped cuprates.

There is increasing evidence that inhomogeneous distributions of charge and spin--so-called "striped phases"--play an important role in determining the properties of the high-temperature superconductors. For example, recent neutron-scattering measurements on the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ family of materials show both spin and charge fluctuations that are consistent with the striped-phase picture. But the fluctuations associated with a striped phase are expected to be one-dimensional, whereas the magnetic fluctuations observed to date appear to display two-dimensional symmetry. We show here that this apparent two-dimensionality results from measurements on twinned crystals, and that similar measurements on substantially detwinned crystals of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ reveal the one-dimensional character of the magnetic fluctuations, thus greatly strengthening the striped-phase interpretation. Moreover, our results also suggest that superconductivity originates in charge stripes that extend along the b crystal axis, where the superfluid density is found to be substantially larger than for the a direction.

For the optimally doped sample the charge distribution changes sharply near the superconducting transition temperature, with stronger charge inhomogeneity below Tc. The reflectivity of La_(1.87)Sr_(0.13)CuO_4 has been measured in the frequency range 30- 9,000 cm-1 (0.004 -- 1 eV) both parallel and perpendicular to the CuO_2 planes, whereas La_(1.86)Sr_(0.14)CuO_4 was studied only in the ab-plane. The extended Drude model shows that the frequency-dependent effective scattering rate 1/tau(omega)is strongly suppressed below the high-frequency straight-line extrapolation, a signature of the pseudogap state. This suppression can be seen from temperatures below the superconducting transition up to 400 K. In the case of underdoped LSCO the straight-line extrapolation is temperature independent below 200 K, whereas above 200 K there is a strong temperature dependence of the high-frequency 1/tau(omega,T). The out-of-plane direction is also examined for evidence of the pseudogap state.

The nearly singular fluctuations are consistent with a nearby quantum critical point.

Abstract:
Neutron scattering measurements have been made on the spin fluctuations in YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} for different oxygen doping levels. Incommensurability is clearly observed for oxygen concentrations of 6.6 and 6.7 and is suggested for the 6.93. Measurements of the resonance for the O_{6.6} concentration show that it exists in a broadened and less intense form at temperatures much higher than T_c.

We find that a pseudogap opens in the spin fluctuation spectrum at temperatures well above $T_c$. We speculate that the appearance of the low frequency incommensurate fluctuations is associated with the opening of the pseudogap. To within the error of the measurements, a gap in the spin fluctuation spectrum is found in the superconducting state.

Experiments were performed using the chopper spectrometers HET and MARI at the ISIS spallation source. We have placed our measurements on an absolute intensity scale, this allows systematic trends to be seen and comparisons with theory to be made. We find that the insulating S=1/2 antiferromagnetic parent compounds show a dramatic renormalization of the spin wave intensity. The effect of doping on the response is to cause broadenings in wave vector and large redistributions of spectral weight in the frequency spectrum.

We observe a gap-like depression of the effective scattering rate below 700 cm(-1) in both systems. This feature persists up to 300 K in the underdoped sample with the concentration of Sr x=0.14 but loses prominance at temperatures above 300 K in the overdoped regime (x=0.22). Below 700 cm(-1) the scattering rate is temperature dependent and superlinear in frequency for both samples. Above this frequency the effective scattering rate becomes linear in frequency and is temperature independent in the case of the underdoped La(1.86)Sr(0.14)CuO(4) up to 300 K. On the other hand, the overdoped La(1.76)Sr(0.22)CuO(4) shows a scattering rate temperature dependence above 700 cm(-1) at all temperatures. This behaviour of the frequency and temperature dependent scattering rates is a signature of a pseudogap state in other HTSC materials and suggests that both the under and overdoped single-layer HTSC systems Ls(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) have a pseudogap at temperatures exceeding 300 K.

Our results indicate that spin excitations in the superconducting state are essentially the same as those in the fully doped material except that the unusual 41 meV resonance is observed at 34.8 meV. The normal state spin excitations are characterized by a weakly energy-dependent continuum whose temperature dependence shows the clear signature of a superconducting gap at Tc. The enhancement at the resonance is accompanied by a suppression of magnetic fluctuations at both higher and lower energies.
