We analyze and compare different methods for handling the mutual coupling in RIS-aided communication systems. A new mutual coupling aware algorithm is derived where the reactance of each element is updated successively with a closed-form solution. In comparison to existing element-wise methods, this approach leads to a considerably reduced computational complexity. Furthermore, we introduce decoupling networks for the RIS array as a potential solution for handling mutual coupling. With these networks, the system model reduces to the same structure as when no mutual coupling were present. Including decoupling networks, we can optimize the channel gain of a RIS-aided SISO system in closed-form which allows to analyze the scenario under mutual coupling analytically and to draw connections to the conventional transmit array gain. In particular, a super-quadratic channel gain can be achieved which scales as N^4 where N is the number of RIS elements.

RISs are an emerging technology for engineering the channels of future wireless communication systems. The vast majority of research publications on RIS are focussing on system-level optimization and are based on very simplistic models ignoring basic physical laws. There are only a few publications with a focus on physical modeling. Nevertheless, the widely employed model is still inconsistent with basic physical laws. We will show that even with a very simple abstract model based on isotropic radiators, ignoring any mismatch, mutual coupling, and losses, each RIS element cannot be modeled to simply reflect the incident signal by manipulating its phase only and letting the amplitude unchanged. We will demonstrate the inconsistencies with the aid of very simple toy examples, even with only one or two RIS elements. Based on impedance parameters, the problems associated with scattering parameters can be identified enabling a correct interpretation of the derived solutions.

We investigate the benefits of mutual coupling effects between the passive elements of intelligent reconfigurable surfaces (IRSs) on maximizing the achievable rate of downlink Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks. In this paper, we present an electromagnetic (EM) coupling model for IRSs whose elements are connected minimum scattering antennas (i.e., dipoles). Using Chu's theory, we incorporate the finite antenna size constraint on each element of the IRS to obtain the IRS mutual impedance matrix. By maximizing the IRS phase shiters using the gradient ascent procedure, our numerical results show that mutual coupling is indeed crucial to avoid the achievable rate degradation when the spacing between IRS elements is down to a fraction of the wavelength.

Two novel decoupling and matching networks (DMNs) in microstrip technology for three-element uniform circular arrays (UCAs) are investigated and compared to a more conventional DMN approach with simple neutralization lines. The array elements are coaxially-fed quarter-wavelength monopole antennas over a finite groundplane. Three-element arrays are considered since UCAs with an odd number of elements are able to provide an almost constant maximum array factor over the whole azimuthal angular range. The new designs are explained from a theoretical point of view and their implementations are compared to four- and three-elements UCAs without DMN in terms of decoupling and matching bandwidth as well as beamforming capabilities. In addition to excellent decoupling and matching below -16 dB, a broader bandwidth is obtained by the two DMNs. The reasons for the enhanced bandwidth are similar in both cases: By introducing several circuit elements offering additional degrees of freedom, matching of the monopole input impedances at different frequencies becomes feasible. One of the presented designs offers a larger bandwidth, while the other design is able to provide a better total efficiency. Scattering parameters, radiation patterns, beamforming capabilities, and enhanced gain are all verified by measurements over the operating bandwidth.

Dealing with nonlinear effects of the radio-frequency(RF) chain is a key issue in the realization of very large-scale multi-antenna (MIMO) systems. Achieving the remarkable gains possible with massive MIMO requires that the signal processing algorithms systematically take into account these effects. Here, we present a computationally efficient linear precoding method satisfying the requirements for low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) and low-resolution D/A-converters (DACs). The method is based on a sparse regularization of the precoding matrix and offers advantages in terms of precoded signal PAPR as well as processing complexity. Through simulation, we find that the method substantially improves conventional linear precoders.

In the context of positioning a target with a single-anchor, this contribution focuses on the Fisher information about the position, orientation and clock offset of the target provided by single-bounce reflections. The availability of prior knowledge of the target's environment is taken into account via a prior distribution of the position of virtual anchors, and the rank, intensity and direction of provided information is studied. We show that when no prior knowledge is available, single-bounce reflections offer position information in the direction parallel to the reflecting surface, irrespective of the target's and anchor's locations. We provide a geometrically intuitive explanation of the results and present numerical examples demonstrating their potential implications.

We consider a single-anchor multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system with imperfectly synchronized transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) clocks, where the Rx estimates its position based on the received reference signals. The Tx, having (imperfect) prior knowledge about the Rx location and the surrounding geometry, transmits the reference signals based on a set of fixed beams. In this work, we develop strategies for the power allocation among the beams aiming to minimize the expected Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for Rx positioning. Additional constraints on the design are included to ensure that the line-of-sight (LOS) path is detected with high probability. Furthermore, the effect of clock asynchronism on the resulting allocation strategies is also studied. We also propose a gridless compressed sensing-based position estimation algorithm, which exploits the information on the clock offset provided by non-line-of-sight paths, and show that it is asymptotically efficient.

To achieve high data rates defined in 5G, the use of millimeter-waves and massive-MIMO are indispensable. To benefit from these technologies, an accurate estimation of the channel parameters is crucial. We propose a novel two-stage algorithm for channel parameters estimation. In the first stage, coarse estimation is accomplished by applying parameter estimation via interpolation based on DFT grid (PREIDG) with a fixed look-up table (LUT), while the second stage refines the estimates by means of the space-alternating generalized expectation maximization (SAGE) algorithm. The two-stage algorithm uses discrete Fourier transform beamforming vectors which are efficiently implemented by a Butler matrix in the analog domain. We found that this methodology improves the estimates compared to the auxiliary beam pair (ABP) method. The two-stage algorithm shows efficient performance in the low signal to noise ratio regime for the channel parameters i.e. angles of departure, complex path gains and delays of the multipaths. Finally, we derived the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) to assess the performance of our two-stage estimation algorithm.

We also analyze the uplink achievable rate with maximal ratio combining (MRC), zero-forcing (ZF), and LMMSE receivers and provide a lower bound for the achievable rate with the MRC receiver. Numerical results show superior channel estimation and sum spectral efficiency performance using the $ΣΔ$ architecture compared to conventional 1- or 2-bit quantized massive MIMO systems.

The one-bit spatial Sigma-Delta concept has recently been proposed as an approach for achieving low distortion and low power consumption for massive multi-input multi-output systems. The approach exploits users located in known angular sectors or spatial oversampling to shape the quantization noise away from desired directions of arrival. While reducing the antenna spacing alleviates the adverse impact of quantization noise, it can potentially deteriorate the performance of the massive array due to excessive mutual coupling. In this paper, we analyze the impact of mutual coupling on the uplink spectral efficiency of a spatial one-bit Sigma-Delta massive MIMO architecture, and compare the resulting performance degradation to standard one-bit quantization as well as the ideal case with infinite precision. Our simulations show that the one-bit Sigma-Delta array is particularly advantageous in space-constrained scenarios, can still provide significant gains even in the presence of mutual coupling when the antennas are closely spaced.

In this paper, we consider the transmit and receive antenna array gain of massive MIMO systems. In particular, we look at their dependence on the number of antennas in the array, and the antenna spacing for uniform linear and uniform circular arrays. It is known that the transmit array gain saturates at a certain antenna spacing, but the receive array gain had not been considered. With our physically consistent analysis based on the Multiport Communication Theory, we show that the receive array gain does not saturate, but that there is a peak at a certain antenna spacing when there is no decoupling network at the receiver. As implementing a decoupling network for massive MIMO would be almost impossible, this is a reasonable assumption. Furthermore, we analyze how the array gain changes depending on the antenna spacing and the size of the antenna array and derive design recommendations.

To achieve a reliable communication with short data blocks, we propose a novel decoding strategy for Kronecker-structured constant modulus signals that provides low bit error ratios (BERs) especially in the low energy per bit to noise power spectral density ratio $(E_b/N_0)$. The encoder exploits the fact that any M-PSK constellation can be factorized as Kronecker products of lower or equal order PSK constellation sets. A construction of two types of schemes is first derived. For such Kronecker-structured schemes, a conceptually simple decoding algorithm is proposed, referred to as Kronecker-RoD (rank-one detector). The decoder is based on a rank-one approximation of the "tensorized" received data block, has a built-in noise rejection capability and a smaller implementation complexity than state-of-the-art detectors. Compared with convolutional codes with hard and soft Viterbi decoding, Kronecker-RoD outperforms the latter in BER performance at same spectral efficiency.

Antenna arrays have been used in various applications and have become an important tool to achieve high spectral efficiency in wireless communications. Its use brings to the communications system an increase in performance in terms of capacity and reliability. Recently one of the main communications architectures that makes use of antenna arrays is the Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology. MIMO technology has been applied in antenna arrays composed of elements in the order of tens to hundreds. In this way, it is necessary to use the structure of compact antennas that offer all the necessary robustness to the applied project. In this context, it is important to revisit the concepts of mutual coupling and impedance matching among antenna elements in an array. This paper proposes and evaluates three strategies of joint decoupling and impedance matching networks(DMN) for antenna arrays. The first method called DMN with Lumped Elements (DMN-LE) performs the decoupling and impedance matching steps with capacitors and inductors. The second method is called the Ring Hybrid (DMN-RH). It is utilizes a microstrip line in the ring form. With this approach is achieved first the decoupling followed by impedance matching steps. The third method is called Networkless Decoupling and Matching (NDM). It brings a concept of decoupling without the presence of a network itself. A comparison of the methods is performed both analytically and via computer simulations. We conclude that the third method, networkless one, is an interesting new alternative approach.

We consider the reciprocity of the information-theoretic channel of Time Division Duplex (TDD) Multi-User-Multiple Input Multiple Output (MU-MIMO) systems in the up- and downlink. Specifically, we assume that the transmit and receive chains are reciprocal. We take the mutual coupling between the antenna elements at the base station and at the mobiles into account. Mutual coupling influences how to calculate transmit power and noise covariance. The analysis is based on the Multiport Communication Theory, which ensures that the information-theoretic model is consistent with physics. It also includes a detailed noise model. We show that due to the coupling, the information-theoretic up- and downlink channels do not fulfill the ordinary reciprocity relation, even if the input-output relation of the transmit voltage sources and the receive load voltages, i.e., the channel which is estimated with the help of pilot signals in the uplink, is reciprocal. This is a fundamental effect that is not considered otherwise. We show via Monte Carlo simulations that both, using the ordinary reciprocity relation, and not taking the coupling into account, significantly decreases the ergodic rates in single-user and the ergodic sum rates in multi-user systems.

The fundamental limits of single-anchor multi-antenna positioning are investigated. Exploiting the structure of the multiple input-multiple output-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) channel at millimeter-wave frequencies, we present geometrically intuitive asymptotic expressions for the Fisher information on position, orientation and velocity for large bandwidth and number of antennas. The effects of synchronization errors and mobility are studied and it is shown that non-line-of-sight (NLOS) paths can be used to estimate the synchronization error and drastically improve the positioning performance. We also find that, in the presence of line-of-sight (LOS), mobility has a small impact on the achievable positioning accuracy, but in the NLOS-only scenario it can significantly improve the achievable performance, depending on the variance of the synchronization error. Finally, considering a communication system with device-specific transmission and reception constraints, we compare the positioning accuracy between the downlink and the uplink and show that they are equivalent under the same signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

We propose optimising a Kronecker-separable beamforming filter that takes advantage of the bi-dimensional array geometry to reduce computational costs. The existing literature on quantized massive MIMO systems deals with Cyclic Prefix (CP) transmission over frequency-selective channels. In this paper, we propose a computationally efficient block processing equalizer based on the Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm in CP-free transmission for 1-bit quantized systems. We investigate the optimal block length and overlapping factor in relation to the Channel Impulse Response (CIR) length based on the Bit Error-Rate (BER) performance metric. As EM is a non-linear algorithm, the optimal estimate is found iteratively depending on the initial starting point of the algorithm. Through numerical simulations we show that initializing the EM-algorithm with a Wiener-Filter (WF) estimate, which takes the underlying quantization into account, achieves superior BER-performance compared to initialization with other starting points.

In this paper, we propose a block processing Frequency Domain Equalization (FDE) technique in CP-free transmission schemes for massive MIMO systems having low resolution ADCs. The optimal block length for FDE is found by minimizing a computational complexity cost function and taking quantization distortion, channel impulse response and the number of transmit and receiver antennas into account. We present a new precoding technique to mitigate the Multi-User Interference (MUI) and the quantization distortions in a downlink Multi-User (MU) MIMO system with coarsely Quantized Constant Envelope (QCE) signals at the transmitter. The optimization is based on maximizing the safety margin to the decision thresholds of the receiver constellation modulation. Simulation results show a significant gain in terms of the uncoded Bit Error Ratio (BER) compared to the existing linear precoding techniques.

We analyze the performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) links with one-bit output quantization in terms of achievable rates and characterize their performance loss compared to unquantized systems for general channel statistical models and general channel state information (CSI) at the receiver. One-bit ADCs are particularly suitable for large-scale millimeter wave MIMO Communications (massive MIMO) to reduce the hardware complexity. In such applications, the signal-to-noise ratio per antenna is rather low due to the propagation loss. Thus, it is crucial to analyze the performance of MIMO systems in this regime by means of information theoretical methods. Since an exact and general information-theoretic analysis is not possible, we resort to the derivation of a general asymptotic expression for the mutual information in terms of a second order expansion around zero SNR. We show that up to second order in the SNR, the mutual information of a system with two-level (sign) output signals incorporates only a power penalty factor of pi/2 (1.96 dB) compared to system with infinite resolution for all channels of practical interest with perfect or statistical CSI. An essential aspect of the derivation is that we do not rely on the common pseudo-quantization noise model.

We consider the recently agreed 3GPP NR type 1 OFDM reference signals. We also show that the DCD based algorithm is more robust to channel estimation errors. In contrast to the common believe we also show that the complexity of MMSE equalization for a massive MIMO system is not dominated by the matrix inversion but by the computation of the Gram matrix.

For 5G it will be important to leverage the available millimeter wave spectrum. To achieve an approximately omni- directional coverage with a similar effective antenna aperture compared to state of the art cellular systems, an antenna array is required at both the mobile and basestation. Due to the large bandwidth and inefficient amplifiers available in CMOS for mmWave, the analog front-end of the receiver with a large number of antennas becomes especially power hungry. Two main solutions exist to reduce the power consumption: hybrid beam forming and digital beam forming with low resolution Analog to Digital Converters (ADCs). In this work we compare the spectral and energy efficiency of both systems under practical system constraints. We consider the effects of channel estimation, transmitter impairments and multiple simultaneous users. Our power consumption model considers components reported in literature at 60 GHz. In contrast to many other works we also consider the correlation of the quantization error, and generalize the modeling of it to non-uniform quantizers and different quantizers at each antenna. The result shows that as the SNR gets larger the ADC resolution achieving the optimal energy efficiency gets also larger. The energy efficiency peaks for 5 bit resolution at high SNR, since due to other limiting factors the achievable rate almost saturates at this resolution. We also show that in the multi-user scenario digital beamforming is in any case more energy efficient than hybrid beamforming. In addition we show that if different ADC resolutions are used we can achieve any desired trade-offs between power consumption and rate close to those achieved with only one ADC resolution.

In particular, we consider the extreme case of only 1-bit resolution (with oversampling), where we propose a single carrier system architecture for minimizing the spectral occupation and the required SNR of 1-bit signals. In addition, the receiver is optimized to take into account the effects of quantization at both ends. Through simulations, we show that despite of the coarse quantization, sufficient spectral confinement is still achievable.

We end up with a discrete memoryless channel with input and output vectors belonging to the QPSK constellation. In the context of massive (MIMO) systems the number of base station (BS) antennas is much larger than the number of receive antennas. This leads to high input cardinality of the channel. In this work we introduce a method to reduce the input set based on the mimimum bit-error-ratio (BER) criterion combined with a non-linear precoding technique. This method is denoted as spatial coding. Simulations show that this spatial coding improves the BER behavior significantly removing the error floor due to coarse quantization.

These systems can achieve maximum spectral efficiency compared to other multicarrier schemes, particularly in highly frequency selective propagation conditions. In this case a multi-tap, fractionally spaced equalizer or precoder needs to be inserted in each subcarrier at the receiver or transmitter side to compensate inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI). We propose a novel linear minimum-mean-squared-error (MMSE) precoder design for a downlink (DL) massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) scenario. For economical and computational efficiency reasons low resolution 1-bit digital-to-analog (DAC) and analog-to-digital (ADC) converters are used. This comes at the cost of performance gain that can be recovered by the large number of antennas deployed at the base station (BS) and an appropiate precoder design to mitigate the distortions due to the coarse quantization. The proposed precoder takes the quantization non-linearities into account and is split into a digital precoder and an analog precoder. We formulate the two-stage precoding problem such that the MSE of the users is minimized under the 1-bit constraint. In the simulations, we compare the new optimized precoding scheme with previously proposed linear precoders in terms of uncoded bit error ratio (BER).

In this work, the problem of signal parameter estimation from measurements acquired by a low-complexity analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with $1$-bit output resolution and an unknown quantization threshold is considered. Single-comparator ADCs are energy-efficient and can be operated at ultra-high sampling rates. For analysis of such systems, a fixed and known quantization threshold is usually assumed. In the symmetric case, i.e., zero hard-limiting offset, it is known that in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime the signal processing performance degrades moderately by ${2}/π$ ($-1.96$ dB) when comparing to an ideal $\infty$-bit converter. Due to hardware imperfections, low-complexity $1$-bit ADCs will in practice exhibit an unknown threshold different from zero. Therefore, we study the accuracy which can be obtained with receive data processed by a hard-limiter with unknown quantization level by using asymptotically optimal channel estimation algorithms. To characterize the estimation performance of these nonlinear algorithms, we employ analytic error expressions for different setups while modeling the offset as a nuisance parameter. In the low SNR regime, we establish the necessary condition for a vanishing loss due to missing offset knowledge at the receiver. As an application, we consider the estimation of single-input single-output wireless channels with inter-symbol interference and validate our analysis by comparing the analytic and experimental performance of the studied estimation algorithms. Finally, we comment on the extension to multiple-input multiple-output channel models.

We deploy low resolution digital-to-analog converters (DACs) at the transmitter for the sake of decreasing the high energy consumption related to the massive MISO system. To mitigate the multi-user interference (MUI) and the distortions due to the low resolution DACs, the minimum bit error ratio (MBER) precoder was introduced in previous work. However, this precoder technique is restricted to quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signaling. Our approach consists in upgrading this method to the transmission of 16 QAM symbols. Two main solutions exist to reduce the power consumption: Hybrid BeamForming (HBF) and Digital BeamForming (DBF) with low resolution ADC. Hybrid beamforming can also be combined with low resolution ADCs. This paper compares the spectral and energy efficiency based on the chosen RF-frontend configuration. A channel with multipath propagation is used. In contrast to previous publication, we take the spatial correlation of the quantization noise into account. We show that the low resolution ADC are robust to small Automatic Gain Control (AGC) imperfections. We showed that in the low SNR regime the performance of DBF even with 1-2 bit resolution outperforms HBF. If we consider the relationship of spectral and energy efficiency then DBF with 3-5 bits resolution achieves the best ratio of spectral efficiency per power consumption of the RF receiver frontend over a very wide SNR region. The power consumption model is based on components reported in literature.

This paper addresses channel estimation and data equalization on frequency-selective 1-bit quantized Multiple Input-Multiple Output (MIMO) systems. No joint processing or Channel State Information is assumed at the transmitter, and therefore our findings are also applicable to the uplink of Multi-User MIMO systems. System models for both Orthogonal Division Frequency Multiplexing (OFDM) and single-carrier schemes are developed. A Cramér-Rao Lower Bound for the estimation problems is derived. The two nonlinear algorithms Expectation Maximization (EM) and Generalized Approximate Message Passing (GAMP) are adapted to the problems, and a linear method based on the Bussgang theorem is proposed. In the OFDM case, the linear method enables subcarrier-wise estimation, greatly reducing computational complexity. Simulations are carried out to compare the algorithms with different settings. The results turn out to be close to the Cramér-Rao bound in the low Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) region. The OFDM setting is more suitable for the nonlinear algorithms, and that the linear methods incur a performance loss with respect to the nonlinear approaches. In the relevant low and medium SNR regions, the loss amounts to 2-3 dB and might well be justified in exchange for the reduced computational effort, especially in Massive MIMO settings.

While 1-bit analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) allows to significantly reduce the analog complexity of wireless receive systems, using the exact likelihood function of the hard-limiting system model in order to obtain efficient algorithms in the digital domain can make 1-bit signal processing challenging. If the signal model before the quantizer consists of correlated Gaussian random variables, the tail probability for a multivariate Gaussian distribution with N dimensions (general orthant probability) is required in order to formulate the likelihood function of the quantizer output. As a closed-form expression for the general orthant probability is an open mathematical problem, formulation of efficient processing methods for correlated and quantized data and an analytical performance assessment have, despite their high practical relevance, only found limited attention in the literature on quantized estimation theory. Here we review the approach of replacing the original system model by an equivalent distribution within the exponential family. For 1-bit signal processing, this allows to circumvent calculation of the general orthant probability and gives access to a conservative approximation of the receive likelihood. For the application of blind direction-of-arrival (DOA) parameter estimation with an array of K sensors, each performing 1-bit quantization, we demonstrate how the exponential replacement enables to formulate a pessimistic version of the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) and to derive an asymptotically achieving conservative maximum-likelihood estimator (CMLE). The 1-bit DOA performance analysis based on the pessimistic CRLB points out that a low-complexity radio front-end design with 1-bit ADC is in particular suitable for blind wireless DOA estimation with a large number of array elements operating in the medium SNR regime.

We discuss the problem how to determine the quality of a nonlinear system with respect to a measurement task. Due to amplification, filtering, quantization and internal noise sources physical measurement equipment in general exhibits a nonlinear and random input-to-output behaviour. This usually makes it impossible to accurately describe the underlying statistical system model. When the individual operations are all known and deterministic, one can resort to approximations of the input-to-output function. The problem becomes challenging when the processing chain is not exactly known or contains nonlinear random effects. Then one has to approximate the output distribution in an empirical way. Here we show that by measuring the first two sample moments of an arbitrary set of output transformations in a calibrated setup, the output distribution of the actual system can be approximated by an equivalent exponential family distribution. This method has the property that the resulting approximation of the statistical system model is guaranteed to be pessimistic in an estimation theoretic sense. We show this by proving that an equivalent exponential family distribution in general exhibits a lower Fisher information measure than the original system model. With various examples and a model matching step we demonstrate how this estimation theoretic aspect can be exploited in practice in order to obtain a conservative measurement-driven quality assessment method for nonlinear measurement systems.

Parameter estimation using quantized observations is of importance in many practical applications. Under a symmetric $1$-bit setup, consisting of a zero-threshold hard-limiter, it is well known that the large sample performance loss for low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) is moderate ($\frac{2}π$ or $-1.96$dB). This makes low-complexity analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) with $1$-bit resolution a promising solution for future wireless communications and signal processing devices. However, hardware imperfections and external effects introduce the quantizer with an unknown hard-limiting level different from zero. In this paper, the performance loss associated with pilot-based channel estimation, subject to an asymmetric hard limiter with unknown offset, is studied under two setups. The analysis is carried out via the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) and an expected CRLB for a setup with random parameter. Our findings show that the unknown threshold leads to an additional information loss, which vanishes for low SNR values or when the offset is close to zero.

Energy-efficient signal processing systems require estimation methods operating on data collected with low-complexity devices. Using analog-to-digital converters (ADC) with $1$-bit amplitude resolution has been identified as a possible option in order to obtain low power consumption. The $1$-bit performance loss, in comparison to an ideal receiver with $\infty$-bit ADC, is well-established and moderate for low SNR applications ($2/π$ or $-1.96$ dB). Recently it has been shown that for parameter estimation with state-space models the $1$-bit performance loss with Bayesian filtering can be significantly smaller ($\sqrt{2/π}$ or $-0.98$ dB). Here we extend the analysis to Bayesian smoothing where additional measurements are used to reconstruct the current state of the system parameter. Our results show that a $1$-bit receiver performing smoothing is able to outperform an ideal $\infty$-bit system carrying out filtering by the cost of an additional processing delay $Δ$.

The problem of determining the intrinsic quality of a signal processing system with respect to the inference of an unknown deterministic parameter $θ$ is considered. While the Fisher information measure $F(θ)$ forms a classical tool for such a problem, direct computation of the information measure can become difficult in various situations. For the estimation theoretic performance analysis of nonlinear measurement systems, the form of the likelihood function can make the calculation of the information measure $F(θ)$ challenging. In situations where no closed-form expression of the statistical system model is available, the analytical derivation of $F(θ)$ is not possible at all. Based on the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality, we derive an alternative information measure $S(θ)$. It provides a lower bound on the Fisher information $F(θ)$ and has the property of being evaluated with the mean, the variance, the skewness and the kurtosis of the system model at hand. These entities usually exhibit good mathematical tractability or can be determined at low-complexity by real-world measurements in a calibrated setup. With various examples, we show that $S(θ)$ provides a good conservative approximation for $F(θ)$ and outline different estimation theoretic problems where the presented information bound turns out to be useful.

The mitigation of nonlinear distortion caused by power amplifiers (PA) in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems is an essential issue to enable energy efficient operation. In this work we proposed a new algorithm for receiver-based clipping estimation in OFDM systems that combines the Iterative Hard Thresholding (IHT) method with a weighting corresponding to the estimated probability of clipping. Thereby a more general amplifier input-output characteristic is considered, which is assumed to be unknown at the receiver side. Further, we avoid the use of dedicated subcarriers and formulate the recovery problem solely on reliably detected sub-carriers. Through simulations, we show that the proposed technique achieves a better complexity-performance tradeoff compared to existing methods.

The problem of signal parameter estimation and tracking with measurement data of low resolution is considered. In comparison to an ideal receiver with infinite receive resolution, the performance loss of a simplistic receiver with 1-bit resolution is investigated. For the case where the measurement data is preprocessed by a symmetric hard-limiting device with 1-bit output, it is well-understood that the performance for low SNR channel parameter estimation degrades moderately by 2/pi (-1.96 dB). Here we show that the 1-bit quantization loss can be significantly smaller if information about the temporal evolution of the channel parameters is taken into account in the form of a state-space model. By the analysis of a Bayesian bound for the achievable tracking performance, we attain the result that the quantization loss in dB is in general smaller by a factor of two if the channel evolution is slow. For the low SNR regime, this is equivalent to a reduced loss of sqrt(2/pi) (-0.98 dB). By simulating non-linear filtering algorithms for a satellite-based ranging application (GPS) and a UWB channel estimation problem, both with low-complexity 1-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) at the receiver, we verify that the analytical characterization of the tracking error is accurate. This shows that the performance loss due to observations with low amplitude resolution can, in practice, be much less pronounced than indicated by classical results. Finally, we discuss the implication of the result for medium SNR applications like channel estimation in the context of mobile wireless communications.

The design of the analog demodulator for receivers with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADC) is investigated. For infinite ADC resolution, demodulation to baseband with M = 2 orthogonal sinusoidal functions (quadrature demodulation) is an optimum design choice. For receive systems which are restricted to ADC with low amplitude resolution we show here that this classical demodulation approach is suboptimal. To this end we analyze the theoretical channel parameter estimation performance based on a simple pessimistic characterization of the Fisher information measure when forming M > 2 analog demodulation channels prior to an ADC with 1-bit amplitude resolution. In order to emphasize that this inside is also true for communication problems, we provide an additional discussion on the behavior of the Shannon information measure under overdemodulation and 1-bit quantization.

In this paper, we analyze the fundamental trade-off between information transfer and power gain by means of an information-theoretic framework in communications circuits. This analysis is of interest as many of today's applications require that maximum information and maximum signal power are extracted (or transferred) through the circuit at the same time for further processing so that a compromise concerning the signal spectral shape as well as the matching network has to be found. To this end, the optimization framework is applied to a two-port circuit, which is used as an abstraction for a broadband amplifier. Thereby, we characterize the involved Pareto bound by considering different optimization problems. The first one aims at optimizing the input power spectral density (PSD) as well as the source and load admittances, whereas the second approach assumes the PSD to be fixed and uniformly distributed within a fixed bandwidth and optimizes the source and load admittances only. Moreover, we will show that additional matching networks may help to improve the trade-off.

A long-haul transmission of 100 Gb/s without optical chromatic-dispersion (CD) compensation provides a range of benefits regarding cost effectiveness, power budget, and nonlinearity tolerance. The channel memory is largely dominated by CD in this case with an intersymbol-interference spread of more than 100 symbol durations. In this paper, we propose CD equalization technique based on nonmaximally decimated discrete Fourier transform (NMDFT) filter bank (FB) with non-trivial prototype filter and complex-valued infinite impulse response (IIR) all-pass filter per sub-band. The design of the sub-band IIR all-pass filter is based on minimizing the mean square error (MSE) in group delay and phase cost functions in an optimization framework. Necessary conditions are derived and incorporated in a multi-step and multi-band optimization framework to ensure the stability of the resulting IIR filter. It is shown that the complexity of the proposed method grows logarithmically with the channel memory, therefore, larger CD values can be tolerated with our approach.

The problem how to approximately determine the absolute value of the Fisher information measure for a general parametric probabilistic system is considered. Having available the first and second moment of the system output in a parametric form, it is shown that the information measure can be bounded from below through a replacement of the original system by a Gaussian system with equivalent moments. The presented technique is applied to a system of practical importance and the potential quality of the bound is demonstrated.
