Clarifying the underlying mechanisms that govern ordering transitions in condensed matter systems is crucial for comprehending emergent properties and phenomena. While transitions are often classified as electronically driven or lattice-driven, we present a departure from this conventional paradigm in the case of the double perovskite Ba$_2$MgReO$_6$. Leveraging resonant and non-resonant elastic x-ray scattering techniques, we unveil the simultaneous ordering of structural distortions and charge quadrupoles at a critical temperature of $T_\mathrm{q}$$\sim$33 K. Using a variety of complementary first-principles-based computational techniques, we demonstrate that while electronic interactions drive the ordering at $T_\mathrm{q}$, it is ultimately the lattice that dictates the specific ground state that emerges. Our findings highlight the crucial interplay between electronic and lattice degrees of freedom, providing a unified framework to understand and predict unconventional emergent phenomena in quantum materials.

The ground state magnetic structure, expected to be built and originate from 7 Heisenberg exchange constants, has been shown to be coupled to the underlying crystallographic chirality with polar domain switching being reported. We apply neutron spectroscopy to extract these symmetric exchange constants. Given the high complexity of the magnetic exchange network, crystallographic structure and complications fitting linear spin-wave models, we take advantage of multiplexed neutron instrumentation to use the first moment sum rule of neutron scattering to estimate the 7 exchange constants. We then use these parameters to calculate the low-energy spin-waves in the Néel state to reproduce the neutron response without strong antisymmetric coupling. Using Green's response functions, the stability of long-wavelength excitations in the context of proposed magnetic structures is then discussed. The results show the presence of strong exchange constants for the chiral exchange pathways and illustrate an underlying coupling between crystallographic and magnetic ``chirality" through predominantely symmetric exchange.

We present a new method of Ba$_{2}$MgWO$_{6}$ single crystal synthesis that allows to grow larger crystals using BaCl$_{2}$ and MgCl$_{2}$ flux. Difficulties to grow single crystal of a size suitable for macroscopic material property measurements caused the majority of characterisation being published on polycrystalline samples. Single crystal diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray analysis confirmed high quality of synthesised samples. Heat capacity measurements from 300~K to 2~K do not show any transitions. However, Raman spectra measured down to 77~K contain additional peaks at all temperatures probed, which is in a contrast with only 4 Raman active modes expected from the reducible representation. This calls for a more detailed study of potential symmetry breaking that could also influence the electronic properties of the material.

We address the degeneracy of the ground state multiplet on the 5$d^1$ Re$^{6+}$ ion in double perovskite Ba$_{2}$MgReO$_{6}$ using a combination of specific heat measurements and density functional calculations. For Ba$_{2}$MgReO$_{6}$, two different ground state multiplets have previously been proposed - a quartet (with degeneracy $N$=4) [1] and a doublet ($N$=2) [2]. Here we employ two independent methods for the estimation of phonon contribution in heat capacity data to obtain the magnetic entropy $S_{mag}$, which reflects the degeneracy of the ground state multiplet $N$ through $S_{mag}=R$ln$N$. In both cases, we obtain a better fit to $S_{mag}=R$ln2 indicating evidence of $N$=2 degeneracy in the range from 2 to 120~K. The detailed nature of the ground state multiplet in Ba$_{2}$MgReO$_{6}$ remains an open question.

MnSb$_{2}$O$_{6}$ is based on the structural chiral $P$321 space group #150 where the magnetic Mn$^{2+}$ moments ($S=5/2$, $L\approx 0$) order antiferromagnetically at $T_\mathrm{N}=12$ K. Unlike the related iron based langasite (Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$) where the low temperature magnetism is based on a proper helix characterized by a time-even pseudoscalar `magnetic' chirality, the Mn$^{2+}$ ions in MnSb$_{2}$O$_{6}$ order with a cycloidal structure at low temperatures, described instead by a time-even vector `magnetic' polarity. A tilted cycloidal structure has been found [M. Kinoshita et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 047201 (2016)] to facilitate ferroelectric switching under an applied magnetic field. In this work, we apply polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction analyzing the magnetic and nuclear structures in MnSb$_{2}$O$_{6}$ with the aim of understanding this magnetoelectric coupling. We find no evidence for a helicoidal magnetic structure with one of the spin envelope axes tilted away from the cycloidal $c$-axis. However, on application of a magnetic field $\parallel$ $\vec{c}$ the spin rotation plane can be tilted, giving rise to a cycloid-helix admixture that evolves towards a distorted helix (zero cycloidal component) for fields great than $\approx$ 2 T. We propose a mechanism for the previously reported ferroelectric switching based on coupled structural and magnetic chiralities requiring only an imbalance of structural chiral domains.

We examine the role of charge, structural, and spin degrees of freedom in the previously poorly understood phase transition in the 5$d^1$ transition-metal double perovskite Cs$_2$TaCl$_6$, using a combination of computational and experimental techniques. Our heat capacity measurements of single-crystalline Cs$_2$TaCl$_6$, reveal a clear anomaly at the transition temperature, $T_\mathrm{Q}$, which was not previously observed in polycrystalline samples. Density functional calculations indicate the emergence of local charge quadrupoles in the cubic phase, mediated by the paramagnetic spins or local structural distortions which then develop into long-range ordered charge quadrupoles in the tetragonal phase. Our resonant elastic x-ray scattering on Cs$_2$TaCl$_6$, single crystals lend support to our calculations. Our work provides new insight into the phase transition in Cs$_2$TaCl$_6$, at $T_\mathrm{Q}$, and demonstrates the utility of this combination of techniques in understanding the complex physics of hidden orders in paramagnetic spin-orbit-entangled compounds.

CeRhSi$_{3}$ is a superconductor under pressure coexisting with a weakly antiferromagnetic phase characterized by a Bragg peak at $\vec{q}_{0}$=($\sim$ 0.2, 0, 0.5) (N. Aso et al. J. Magn. Magn. Mater. 310, 602 (2007)). The compound is also a heavy fermion material with a large specific heat coefficient $γ$=110 mJ $\cdot$ mol$^{-1}$ $\cdot$ K$^{-2}$ and a high Kondo temperature of $T_{K}$=50 K indicative that CeRhSi$_{3}$ is in a strongly Kondo screened state. We apply high resolution neutron spectroscopy to investigate the magnetic fluctuations in the normal phase, at ambient pressures, and at low temperatures. We measure a commensurate dynamic response centered around the $\vec{Q}$=(0, 0, 2) position that gradually evolves to H$\sim$ 0.2 with decreasing temperature and/or energy transfers. The response is broadened both in momentum and energy and not reminiscent of sharp spin wave excitations found in insulating magnets where the electrons are localized. We parameterize the excitation spectrum and temperature dependence using a heuristic model utilizing the random phase approximation to couple relaxing Ce$^{3+}$ ground state Kramers doublets with a Kondo-like dynamic response. With a Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange interaction within the $ab$ plane and an increasing single site susceptibility, we can qualitatively reproduce the neutron spectroscopic results in CeRhSi$_{3}$ and namely the trade-off between scattering at commensurate and incommensurate positions. We suggest that the antiferromagnetic phase in CeRhSi$_{3}$ is driven by weakly correlated relaxing localized Kramers doublets and that CeRhSi$_{3}$ at ambient pressures is on the border between a Rudderman-Kittel-Yosida antiferromagnetic state and a Kondo screened phase where static magnetism is predominately absent.
