Tomographic intensity mapping of the HI using the redshifted 21 cm observations opens up a new window towards our understanding of cosmological background evolution and structure formation. This is a key science goal of several upcoming radio telescopes including the Square Kilometer Array (SKA). In this article we focus on the post-reionization signal and investigate the of cross correlating the 21 cm signal with other tracers of the large scale structure. We consider the cross-correlation of the post-reionization 21 cm signal with the Lyman-alpha forest, Lyman-break galaxies and late time anisotropies in the CMBR maps like weak lensing and the Integrated Sachs Wolfe effect. We study the feasibility of detecting the signal and explore the possibility of obtaining constraints on cosmological models using it.

Monogamy is an intrinsic feature of quantum correlations that gives rise to several interesting quantum characteristics which are not amenable to classical explanations. The monogamy property imposes physical restrictions on unconditional sharability of quantum correlations between the different parts of a multipartite quantum system, and thus has a direct bearing on the cooperative properties of states of multiparty systems, including large many-body systems. On the contrary, a certain party can be maximally classical correlated with an arbitrary number of parties in a multiparty system. In recent years, the monogamy property of quantum correlations has been applied to understand several key aspects of quantum physics, including distribution of quantum resources, security in quantum communication, critical phenomena, and quantum biology. In this chapter, we look at some of the salient developments and applications in quantum physics that have been closely associated with the monogamy of quantum discord, and "discord-like" quantum correlation measures.

We show that bipartite entanglement in a one-dimensional quantum spin model undergoing time-evolution under local Markovian environments can be frozen over time. We demonstrate this by using a number of paradigmatic quantum spin models in one dimension, including the anisotropic XY model in the presence of a uniform and an alternating transverse magnetic field (ATXY), the XXZ model, the XYZ model, and the $J_1-J_2$ model involving the next-nearest-neighbor interactions. We show that the length of the freezing interval, for a chosen pair of nearest-neighbor spins, may remain independent of the length of the spin-chain, for example, in paramagnetic phases of the ATXY model, indicating a scale-invariance. Such freezing of entanglement is found to be robust against a change in the environment temperature, presence of disorder in the system, and whether the noise is dissipative, or not dissipative. Moreover, we connect the freezing of entanglement with the propagation of information through a quantum many-body system, as considered in the Lieb-Robinson theorem. We demonstrate that the variation of the freezing duration exhibits a quadratic behavior against the distance of the nearest-neighbor spin-pair from the noise-source, obtained from exact numerical simulations, in contrast to the linear one as predicted by the Lieb-Robinson theorem.

In this article, we show that in certain situations quantum oscillations can also arise from inside the Fermi sea. We establish this analytically, supporting it with numerical calculations. Possible scenarios where such unusual behavior can occur are pointed out. We show that one can construct a quantum absorption refrigerator that provides refrigeration only in the transient regime, by using three interacting qubits, each of which is also interacting with local heat-bath. The machine either does not provide cooling in the steady state, or the steady state is achieved after a long time. We propose a canonical form of qubit-bath interaction parameters that generates transient cooling without steady-state cooling, and claim that such a phenomenon is generic to small-scale quantum absorption refrigerators. We also show that it is generically possible to have fast cooling. We demonstrate our results for two separate models of thermalization, and show that a transient cooling without steady-state cooling is associated with generation of negligible, or no bipartite quantum correlations. For one of the models of thermalization, we find that the minimum achievable temperature of the refrigerated qubit can remain almost frozen, i.e., unchanged, for a significant region of the parameter space.

In this work we focus on the gravitationally influenced adiabatic particle creation process, a mechanism that does not need any dark energy or modified gravity models to explain the current accelerating phase of the universe. Introducing some particle creation models that generalize some previous models in the literature, we constrain the cosmological scenarios using the latest compilation of the Type Ia Supernovae data only, the first indicator of the accelerating universe. Aside from the observational constraints on the models, we examine the models using two model independent diagnoses, namely the cosmography and $Om$. Further, we establish the general conditions to test the thermodynamic viabilities of any particle creation model. Our analysis shows that at late-time, the models have close resemblance to that of the $Λ$CDM cosmology, and the models always satisfy the generalized second law of thermodynamics under certain conditions.

We investigate the static and dynamical patterns of entanglement in an anisotropic XY model with an alternating transverse magnetic field, which is equivalent to a two-component one-dimensional Fermi gas on a lattice, a system realizable with current technology. Apart from the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases, the model possesses a dimer phase which is not present in the transverse XY model. At zero temperature, we find that the first derivative of bipartite entanglement can detect all the three phases. We analytically show that the model has a "factorization line" on the plane of system parameters, in which the zero temperature state is separable. Along with investigating the effect of temperature on entanglement in a phase plane, we also report a non-monotonic behavior of entanglement with respect to temperature in the anti-ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases, which is surprisingly absent in the dimer phase. Since the time dynamics of entanglement in a realizable physical system plays an important role in quantum information processing tasks, the evolutions of entanglement at small as well as large time are examined. Consideration of large time behavior of entanglement helps us to prove that in this model, entanglement is always ergodic. We observe that other quantum correlation measures can qualitatively show similar features in zero and finite temperatures. However, unlike nearest-neighbor entanglement, the nearest-neighbor information theoretic measures can be both ergodic as well as non-ergodic, depending on the system parameters.

The discovery of strong topological insulators led to enormous activity in condensed matter physics and the discovery of new types of topological materials. Bisumth based chalcogenides are exemplary strong three dimensional topological insulators that host an odd number of massless Dirac fermionic states on all surfaces. A departure from this notion is the idea of a weak topological insulator, wherein only certain surface terminations host surface states characterized by an even number of Dirac cones leading to exciting new physics. Experimentally however, weak topological insulators have proven to be elusive. Here, we report a discovery of a weak topological insulator (WTI), BiSe, of the Bi-chalcogenide family with an indirect band gap of 42 meV. Its structural unit consists of bismuth bilayer (Bi$_2$), a known quantum spin hall insulator sandwiched between two units of Bi$_2$Se$_3$ which are three dimensional strong topological insulators. Angle resolved photo-emission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements on cleaved single crystal flakes along with density fucntional theory (DFT) calculations confirm the existence of weak topological insulating state of BiSe. Additionally, we have carried out magneto-transport measurements on single crystal flakes as well as thin films of BiSe, which exhibit clear signatures of weak anti-localization at low temperatures, consistent with the properties of topological insulators.

We present a theory of quantum oscillations in insulators that are particle-hole symmetric and non-topological but with arbitrary band dispersion, at both zero and non-zero temperature. At temperatures $T$ less than or comparable to the gap, the dependence of oscillations on $T$ is markedly different from that in metals and depends crucially on the position of the chemical potential $μ$ in the gap. If $μ$ is in the middle of the gap, oscillations do not change with $T$; however, if $μ$ is asymmetrically positioned in the gap, surprisingly, oscillations go to zero at a critical value of the inverse field determined by $T$ and $μ$ and then change their phase by $π$ and grow again. Additionally, the temperature dependence is different for quantities derived from the grand canonical potential, such as magnetization and susceptibility, and those derived from the density of states, such as resistivity. However, the non-trivial features arising from asymmetric $μ$ are present in both.

We investigate the action of local and global noise on monogamy of quantum correlations, when monogamy scores are considered as observables, and three-qubit systems are subjected to global noise and various local noisy channels, namely, amplitude-damping, phase-damping, and depolarizing channels. We show that the dynamics of monogamy scores corresponding to negativity and quantum discord, in the case of generalized W states, as inputs to the noisy channels, can exhibit non-monotonic dynamics with respect to increasing noise parameter, which is in contrast to the monotonic decay of monogamy scores when generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states are exposed to noise. We quantify the persistence of monogamy against noise via a characteristic value of the noise parameter, and show that depolarizing noise destroys monogamy of quantum correlation faster compared to other noisy channels. We demonstrate that the negativity monogamy score is more robust than the quantum discord monogamy score, when the noise is of the phase-damping type. We also investigate the variation of monogamy with increasing noise for arbitrary three-qubit pure states as inputs. Finally, depending on these results, we propose a two-step protocol, which can conclusively identify the type of noise applied to the quantum system, by using generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger and generalized W states as resource states. We discuss a possible generalization of the results to higher number of parties.

The neutral intergalactic medium in the post reionization epoch allows us to study cosmological structure formation through the observation of the redshifted 21 cm signal and the Lyman-alpha forest. We investigate the possibility of measuring the total neutrino mass through the suppression of power in the matter power spectrum. We investigate the possibility of measuring the neutrino mass through its imprint on the cross-correlation power spectrum of the 21-cm signal and the Lyman-alpha forest. We consider a radio-interferometric measurement of the 21 cm signal with a SKA1-mid like radio telescope and a BOSS like Lyman-alpha forest survey. A Fisher matrix analysis shows that at the fiducial redshift z = 2.5, a 10,000 hrs 21-cm observation distributed equally over 25 radio pointings and a Lyman-alpha forest survey with 30 quasars lines of sights in 1 {deg}^2, allows us to measure Ω_ν at a 3.25 % level. A total of 25,000 hrs radio-interferometric observation distributed equally over 25 radio pointings and a Lyman-alpha survey with \bar n = 60 {\rm deg}^{-2} will allow Ω_ν to be measured at a 2.26 % level. This corresponds to an idealized measurement of \sum m_ν at the precision of (100 \pm 2.26) meV and f_ν= Ω_ν/ Ω_{m} at 2.49 % level.

In recent years, a low pressure transition around P $\sim$ 3 GPa exhibited by the A$_2$B$_3$-type 3D topological insulators is attributed to an electronic topological transition (ETT) for which there is no direct evidence either from theory or experiments. We address this phase transition and other transitions at higher pressure in bismuth selenide (Bi$_2$Se$_3$) using Raman spectroscopy at pressure upto 26.2 GPa. We see clear Raman signatures of an isostructural phase transition at P $\sim$ 2.4 GPa followed by structural transitions at $\sim$ 10 GPa and 16 GPa. First-principles calculations reveal anomalously sharp changes in the structural parameters like the internal angle of the rhombohedral unit cell with a minimum in the c/a ratio near P $\sim$ 3 GPa. While our calculations reveal the associated anomalies in vibrational frequencies and electronic bandgap, the calculated $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant and Dirac conical surface electronic structure remain unchanged, showing that there is no change in the electronic topology at the lowest pressure transition.

A methodology is presented to systematically transform a quantum mechanical lattice which exhibits edge states to a phononic lattice, thereby developing a family of lattices with edge states. Parameter spaces with topological phase boundaries in the vicinity of the transformed system are illustrated to demonstrate the robustness to mechanical imperfections. A potential realization in terms of fundamental mechanical building blocks is presented for the hexagonal and Lieb lattices. The lattices are composed of passive components and the building blocks are a set of disks and linear springs. Furthermore, by varying the spring stiffness, topological phase transitions are observed, illustrating the potential for tunability of our lattices.

The study of representations invariant to common transformations of the data is important to learning. Most techniques have focused on local approximate invariance implemented within expensive optimization frameworks lacking explicit theoretical guarantees. In this paper, we study kernels that are invariant to the unitary group while having theoretical guarantees in addressing practical issues such as (1) unavailability of transformed versions of labelled data and (2) not observing all transformations. We present a theoretically motivated alternate approach to the invariant kernel SVM. Unlike previous approaches to the invariant SVM, the proposed formulation solves both issues mentioned. We also present a kernel extension of a recent technique to extract linear unitary-group invariant features addressing both issues and extend some guarantees regarding invariance and stability. We present experiments on the UCI ML datasets to illustrate and validate our methods.

Multiparty quantum states are useful for a variety of quantum information and computation protocols. We define a multiparty entanglement measure based on local measurements on a multiparty quantum state, and an entanglement measure averaged on the post-measurement ensemble. Using the generalized geometric measure as the measure of multipartite entanglement for the ensemble, we demonstrate, in the case of several well-known classes of multipartite pure states, that the localized multipartite entanglement can exceed the entanglement present in the original state. We also show that measurement over multiple parties may be beneficial in enhancing localizable multipartite entanglement. We point out that localizable generalized geometric measure faithfully signals quantum critical phenomena in well-known quantum spin models even when considerable finite-size effect is present in the system.

We show that the frequency distribution of the first significant digits of the numbers in the data sets generated from a large class of measures of quantum correlations, which are either entanglement measures, or belong to the information-theoretic paradigm, exhibit a universal behaviour. In particular, for Haar uniformly simulated arbitrary two-qubit states, we find that the first-digit distribution corresponding to a collection of chosen computable quantum correlation quantifiers tend to follow the first-digit law, known as the Benford's law, when the rank of the states increases. Considering a two-qubit state which is obtained from a system governed by paradigmatic spin Hamiltonians, namely, the XY model in a transverse field, and the XXZ model, we show that entanglement as well as information theoretic measures violate the Benford's law. We quantitatively discuss the violation of the Benford's law by using a violation parameter, and demonstrate that the violation parameter can signal quantum phase transitions occurring in these models. We also comment on the universality of the statistics of first significant digits corresponding to appropriate measures of quantum correlations in the case of multipartite systems as well as systems in higher dimensions.

Correct inference of genetic regulations inside a cell is one of the greatest challenges in post genomic era for the biologist and researchers. Several intelligent techniques and models were already proposed to identify the regulatory relations among genes from the biological database like time series microarray data. Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) is one of the most popular and simple approach to model the dynamics as well as to infer correct dependencies among genes. In this paper, Bat Algorithm (BA) is applied to optimize the model parameters of RNN model of Gene Regulatory Network (GRN). Initially the proposed method is tested against small artificial network without any noise and the efficiency is observed in term of number of iteration, number of population and BA optimization parameters. The model is also validated in presence of different level of random noise for the small artificial network and that proved its ability to infer the correct inferences in presence of noise like real world dataset. In the next phase of this research, BA based RNN is applied to real world benchmark time series microarray dataset of E. coli. The results prove that it can able to identify the maximum number of true positive regulation but also include some false positive regulations. Therefore, BA is very suitable for identifying biological plausible GRN with the help RNN model.

For $m=2$, our family reduces to the one given by Larsson and Semitecolos in 2001. For $m>2$, a gap remains between these bounds and the best lower bounds. Present state of the art applications in the area of high energy physics experiments (HEP), radar communication, satellite communication and bio medical instrumentation require fault resilient data acquisition (DAQ) system with the data rate in the order of Gbps. In order to keep the high speed DAQ system functional in such radiation environment where direct intervention of human is not possible, a robust and error free communication system is necessary. In this work we present an efficient DAQ design and its implementation on field programmable gate array (FPGA). The proposed DAQ system supports high speed data communication (~4.8 Gbps) and achieves multi-bit error correction capabilities. BCH code (named after Raj Bose and D. K. RayChaudhuri) has been used for multi-bit error correction. The design has been implemented on Xilinx Kintex-7 board and is tested for board to board communication as well as for board to PC using PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect express) interface. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed FPGA based high speed DAQ system utilizing optical link and multi-bit error resiliency can be considered first of its kind. Performance estimation of the implemented DAQ system is done based on resource utilization, critical path delay, efficiency and bit error rate (BER).

The resonant substructures of $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+π^-$ decays are studied with the Dalitz plot technique. In this study a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions collected by the LHCb detector is used. The branching fraction of the $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+π^-$ decay in the region $m(\overline{D}^0π^{\pm})>2.1$ GeV$/c^2$ is measured to be $(8.46 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.40) \times 10^{-4}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the last arises from the normalisation channel $B^0 \to D^*(2010)^-π^+$. The $π^+π^-$ S-wave components are modelled with the Isobar and K-matrix formalisms. Results of the Dalitz plot analyses using both models are presented. A resonant structure at $m(\overline{D}^0π^-) \approx 2.8$ GeV$/c^{2}$ is confirmed and its spin-parity is determined for the first time as $J^P = 3^-$. The branching fraction, mass and width of this structure are determined together with those of the $D^*_0(2400)^-$ and $D^*_2(2460)^-$ resonances. The branching fractions of other $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 h^0$ decay components with $h^0 \to π^+π^-$ are also reported. Many of these branching fraction measurements are the most precise to date. The first observation of the decays $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 f_0(500)$, $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 f_0(980)$, $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 ρ(1450)$, $B^0 \to D_3^*(2760)^- π^+$ and the first evidence of $B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 f_0(2020)$ are presented.

We study the problem of closing the detection loophole in three-qubit Bell tests, the experimentally most relevant case beyond the usual bipartite scenario, and show that the minimal detection efficiencies required can be considerably lowered compared to the two-qubit case. The lowest reported detection efficiency thresholds for two and three qubits so far are $\sim66.7\%$ and $60\%$, respectively. Using the three-qubit W state and a 3-setting Bell inequality, we beat these thresholds and with an 8-setting Bell inequality we reach $50.13\%$. We also investigate generic three-qubit states which allow us to attain a detection efficiency of $50\%$ in a 4-setting Bell test. We conjecture that the limit of $50\%$ is unbeatable using three-qubit states and any number of measurements.

We address the issue of reducing the resource required to compute information-theoretic quantum correlation measures like quantum discord and quantum work deficit in two qubits and higher dimensional systems. We show that determination of the quantum correlation measure is possible even if we utilize a restricted set of local measurements. We find that the determination allows us to obtain a closed form of quantum discord and quantum work deficit for several classes of states, with a low error. We show that the computational error caused by the constraint over the complete set of local measurements reduces fast with an increase in the size of the restricted set, implying usefulness of constrained optimization, especially with the increase of dimensions. We perform quantitative analysis to investigate how the error scales with the system size, taking into account a set of plausible constructions of the constrained set. Carrying out a comparative study, we show that the resource required to optimize quantum work deficit is usually higher than that required for quantum discord. We also demonstrate that minimization of quantum discord and quantum work deficit is easier in the case of two-qubit mixed states of fixed ranks and with positive partial transpose in comparison to the corresponding states having non-positive partial transpose. Applying the methodology to quantum spin models, we show that the constrained optimization can be used with advantage in analyzing such systems in quantum information-theoretic language. For bound entangled states, we show that the error is significantly low when the measurements correspond to the spin observables along the three Cartesian coordinates, and thereby we obtain expressions of quantum discord and quantum work deficit for these bound entangled states.

Since the negative result of Lo (Physical Review A, 1997), it has been left open whether there exist some functions that can be securely computed in two-party setting in quantum domain when one of the parties is malicious. In this paper, we for the first time, show that there are some functions for which secure two-party quantum computation is indeed possible for non-simultaneous channel model. This is in sharp contrast with the impossibility result of Ben -Or et al. (FOCS, 2006) in broadcast channel model. The functions we study are of two types - one is any function without an embedded XOR, and the other one is a particular function containing an embedded XOR. Contrary to classical solutions, security against adversaries with unbounded power of computation is achieved by the quantum protocols due to entanglement. Further, in the context of secure multi-party quantum computation, for the first time we introduce rational parties, each of whom tries to maximize its utility by obtaining the function output alone. We adapt our quantum protocols for both the above types of functions in rational setting to achieve fairness and strict Nash equilibrium.

The first observation of the $B^0_s\toη'η'$ decay is reported. The study is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to $3.0$ ${\rm fb^{-1}}$ of integrated luminosity collected with the LHCb detector. The significance of the signal is $6.4$ standard deviations. The branching fraction is measured to be $[3.31 \pm 0.64\,{\rm (stat)} \pm 0.28\,{\rm (syst)} \pm 0.12\,{\rm (norm)}]\times10^{-5}$, where the third uncertainty comes from the $B^{\pm}\toη' K^{\pm}$ branching fraction that is used as a normalisation. In addition, the charge asymmetries of $B^{\pm}\toη' K^{\pm}$ and $B^{\pm}\toφK^{\pm}$, which are control channels, are measured to be $(-0.2 \pm1.3)\%$ and $(+1.7\pm1.3)\%$, respectively. All results are consistent with theoretical expectations.

A large scalar contribution from the $K^{*}_{0}(1430)$ and $K^{*}_{0}(800)$ resonances is found, allowing the determination of additional $CP$ asymmetries. Triple product and direct $CP$ asymmetries are determined to be compatible with the Standard Model expectations. The branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \rightarrow K^*(892)^0 \bar{K}{}^*(892)^0)$ is measured to be $(10.8 \pm 2.1 {\ \rm (stat.)} \pm 1.4 {\ \rm (syst.)} \pm 0.6 \ (f_d/f_s) ) \times 10^{-6}$.

Time-dependent $CP$ asymmetries in the decay rates of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays $D^0\rightarrow K^-K^+$ and $D^0\rightarrow π^-π^+$ are measured in $pp$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment. The $D^0$ mesons are produced in semileptonic $b$-hadron decays, where the charge of the accompanying muon is used to determine the initial state as $D^0$ or $\bar{D}^0$. The asymmetries in effective lifetimes between $D^0$ and $\bar{D}^0$ decays, which are sensitive to indirect $CP$ violation, are determined to be \begin{align*}
A_Γ(K^-K^+) = (-0.134 \pm 0.077 \; {}^{+0.026}_{-0.034})\% \,
A_Γ(π^-π^+) = (-0.092\pm 0.145 \; {}^{+0.025}_{-0.033})\% \, \end{align*} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. This result is in agreement with previous measurements and with the hypothesis of no indirect $CP$ violation in $D^0$ decays.

A rational secret sharing scheme is a game in which each party responsible for reconstructing a secret tries to maximize his utility by obtaining the secret alone. Quantum secret sharing schemes, either derived from quantum teleportation or from quantum error correcting code, do not succeed when we assume rational participants. This is because all existing quantum secret sharing schemes consider that the secret is reconstructed by a party chosen by the dealer. In this paper, for the first time, we propose a quantum secret sharing scheme which is resistant to rational parties. The proposed scheme is fair (everyone gets the secret), correct and achieves strict Nash equilibrium.

We propose that a half semiconducting state can exist in trigonal-prismatic transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers of d$^{1}$ configuration. In that state both electrons and holes are spin polarized and share the same spin channel. On the basis of hybrid density functional theory, we predict in particular that VS$_2$ monolayers are half semiconductors with a direct band gap. Moreover, we find that the conduction electron spin orientation of VS$_2$ switches under moderate strain. Our predictions thus open up intriguing possibilities for applications of VS$_2$ in spintronics and optoelectronics. Our analysis of trigonal-prismatic group-V MX$_2$ (M=V, Nb, Ta; X=S, Se, Te) monolayers reveals a broad diversity of electronic states that can be understood qualitatively in terms of localization of $d$ electrons.

The ratios of branching fractions are $\dfrac{\mathcal{B}(B_{s}^{0} \to D_{s}^{\mp} K^{\pm})}{\mathcal{B}(B_{s}^{0} \to D_{s}^{-} π^{+})} = 0.0752 \pm 0.0015 \pm 0.0019$ and $\dfrac{\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to D_{s}^{-} K^{+})}{\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to D^{-} π^{+})} = 0.0129 \pm 0.0005 \pm 0.0008,$ where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

Decay candidates with pion pairs that have invariant mass in the range 0.5-1.3 GeV/$c^2$ and with muon pairs that do not originate from a resonance are considered. The first observation of the decay $B_s^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^-$ and the first evidence of the decay $B^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^-$ are obtained and the branching fractions, restricted to the dipion-mass range considered, are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^-)=(8.6\pm 1.5\,({\rm stat}) \pm 0.7\,({\rm syst})\pm 0.7\,({\rm norm}))\times 10^{-8}$ and $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^-)=(2.11\pm 0.51\,({\rm stat}) \pm 0.15\,({\rm syst})\pm 0.16\,({\rm norm}) )\times 10^{-8}$, where the third uncertainty is due to the branching fraction of the decay $B^0\to J/ψ(\to μ^+μ^-)K^*(890)^0(\to K^+π^-)$, used as a normalisation.

In this paper the performance of the various LHCb sub-detectors and the trigger system are described, using data taken from 2010 to 2012. It is shown that the design criteria of the experiment have been met. The excellent performance of the detector has allowed the LHCb collaboration to publish a wide range of physics results, demonstrating LHCb's unique role, both as a heavy flavour experiment and as a general purpose detector in the forward region.

No excess above the background is observed and limits are set on the production cross-section as a function of the long-lived particle mass and lifetime.

Extrapolation to the full phase space, using PYTHIA 6, yields $σ_{\rm inel} = 66.9 \pm 2.9 \pm 4.4$ mb, where the first uncertainty is experimental and the second is due to the extrapolation.

Distilling highly entangled quantum states from weaker ones is a process that is crucial for efficient and long-distance quantum communication, and has implications for several other quantum information protocols. We introduce the notion of distillation under limited resources, and specifically focus on the energy constraint. The corresponding protocol, which we call the canonical distillation of entanglement, naturally leads to the set of canonically distillable states. We show that for non-interacting Hamiltonians, almost no states are canonically distillable, while the situation can be drastically different for interacting ones. Several paradigmatic Hamiltonians are considered for bipartite as well as multipartite canonical distillability. The results have potential applications for practical quantum communication devices.

The difference in total widths between the $B_c^+$ and $B^+$ mesons is measured using 3.0fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the LHCb experiment in 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energy proton-proton collisions at the LHC. Through the study of the time evolution of $B_c^+ \rightarrow J/ψπ^+$ and $B^+\rightarrow J/ψK^+$ decays, the width difference is measured to be
$$ ΔΓ\equiv Γ_{B_c^+} - Γ_{B^+} = 4.46 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.07mm^{-1}c,$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The known lifetime of the $B^+$ meson is used to convert this to a precise measurement of the $B_c^+$ lifetime,
$$τ_{B_c^+} = 513.4 \pm 11.0 \pm 5.7fs,$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Two structures are observed close to the kinematic threshold in the $Ξ_b^0 π^-$ mass spectrum in a sample of proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ recorded by the LHCb experiment. In the quark model, two baryonic resonances with quark content $bds$ are expected in this mass region: the spin-parity $J^P = \frac{1}{2}^+$ and $J^P=\frac{3}{2}^+$ states, denoted $Ξ_b^{\prime -}$ and $Ξ_b^{*-}$. Interpreting the structures as these resonances, we measure the mass differences and the width of the heavier state to be
$m(Ξ_b^{\prime -}) - m(Ξ_b^0) - m(π^{-}) = 3.653 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.006$ MeV$/c^2$,
$m(Ξ_b^{*-}) - m(Ξ_b^0) - m(π^{-}) = 23.96 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.06$ MeV$/c^2$,
$Γ(Ξ_b^{*-}) = 1.65 \pm 0.31 \pm 0.10$ MeV, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The width of the lighter state is consistent with zero, and we place an upper limit of $Γ(Ξ_b^{\prime -}) < 0.08$ MeV at 95% confidence level. Relative production rates of these states are also reported.

Furthermore, evidence for the $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ decay is obtained with a statistical significance of three standard deviations. The values obtained are $φ_s = -0.058 \pm 0.049 \pm 0.006$ rad, $Γ_s \equiv (Γ_{L}+Γ_{H})/2 = 0.6603 \pm 0.0027 \pm 0.0015$ps$^{-1}$, and$ΔΓ_s \equiv Γ_{L} - Γ_{H} = 0.0805 \pm 0.0091 \pm 0.0032$ps$^{-1}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements of those quantities to date. A combined analysis with $B_s^{0} \to J/ψπ^+π^-$ decays gives $φ_s = -0.010 \pm 0.039 $rad. All measurements are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. For the first time the phase $φ_s$ is measured independently for each polarisation state of the $K^+K^- $ system and shows no evidence for polarisation dependence.

The final state with the largest rate, $J/ψρ^0(770)$, is used to measure the CP-violating angle $2β^{\rm eff}$ to be $(41.7\pm 9.6_{-6.3}^{+2.8})^{\circ}$. This result can be used to limit the size of penguin amplitude contributions to CP violation measurements in, for example, $B_s^0\rightarrow J/ψφ$ decays. Assuming approximate SU(3) flavour symmetry and neglecting higher order diagrams, the shift in the CP-violating phase $φ_s$ is limited to be within the interval [$-1.05^\circ$, +$1.18^\circ$] at 95% confidence level. Changes to the limit due to SU(3) symmetry breaking effects are also discussed.

The Z bosons are reconstructed in the ${\text{Z}/γ^*}\!\rightarrow{μ^{+}μ^{-}}$ final state from muons with a transverse momentum larger than $20{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}}$, while two transverse momentum thresholds are considered for jets ($10{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}}$ and $20{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}}$). A study of $B^0$~and $B^0_s$ meson decays into $J/ψη$~and $J/ψη^{\prime}$ final states is performed using a data set of proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to 3.0fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The decay $B^0 \rightarrow J/ψη^{\prime}$ is observed for thefirst time. The following ratios of branching fractions are measured: $$ \frac{\mathcal{B}(B^0 \rightarrow J/ψη^{\prime})}{\mathcal{B}(B^0_s \rightarrow J/ψη^{\prime})} = (2.28\pm0.65\,(stat)\,\pm0.10\,(syst)\,\pm0.13\,(f_{s}/f_{d}))\times10^{-2},$$ $$ \frac{\mathcal{B}(B^0 \rightarrow J/ψη)}{\mathcal{B}(B^0_s \rightarrow J/ψη)} = (1.85\pm0.61\,(stat)\,\pm0.09\,(syst)\,\pm0.11\,(f_{s}/f_{d}))\times10^{-2},$$ where the third uncertainty is related to the present knowledge of $f_{s}/f_{d}$, the ratio between the probabilities for a $b$ quark to form a $B^0_s$ or $B^0$ meson. The branching fraction ratios are used to determine the parameters of $η-η^{\prime}$ meson mixing. In addition, the first evidence for the decay $B^0_s \rightarrow ψ(2S) η^{\prime}$ is reported, and the relative branching fraction is measured,
$$\frac{\mathcal{B}(B^0_s \rightarrow ψ(2S) η^{\prime})}{\mathcal{B}(B^0_s \rightarrow J/ψη^{\prime})} = (38.7\pm9.0\,(stat)\,\pm1.3\,(syst)\,\pm0.9(\mathcal{B}))\times10^{-2},$$
where the third uncertainty is due to the limited knowledge of the branching fractions of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$~mesons.
