Lead-halide organic-inorganic perovskites consist of an inorganic host framework with an organic molecule occupying the interstitial space. The structure and dynamics of these materials have been heavily studied recently due to interest in their exceptional photovoltaic properties. We combine inelastic neutron scattering, Raman spectroscopy, and quasielastic neutron scattering to study the temperature dependent dynamics of the molecular cation in CH3NH3PbBr3. By applying high resolution quasielastic neutron scattering, we confirm the [CH3NH3]+ ions are static in the low temperature orthorhombic phase yet become dynamic above 150 K where a series of structural transitions occur. This molecular melting is accompanied by a temporal broadening in the intra-molecular modes probed through high energy inelastic spectroscopy. Simultaneous Raman measurements, a strictly |Q|=0 probe, are suggestive that this broadening is due to local variations in the crystal field environment around the hydrogen atoms. These results confirm the strong role of hydrogen bonding and also a coupling between molecular and framework dynamics.

The twin discoveries of the quantum Hall effect, in the 1980's, and of topological band insulators, in the 2000's, were landmarks in physics that enriched our view of the electronic properties of solids. In a nutshell, these discoveries have taught us that quantum mechanical wavefunctions in crystalline solids may carry nontrivial topological invariants which have ramifications for the observable physics. One of the side effects of the recent topological insulator revolution has been that such physics is much more widespread than was appreciated ten years ago. For example, while topological insulators were originally studied in the context of electron wavefunctions, recent work has led to proposals of topological insulators in bosonic systems: in photonic crystals, in the vibrational modes of crystals, and in the excitations of ordered magnets. Here we confirm the recent proposal that, in a weak magnetic field, the dimerized quantum magnet SrCu$_{2}$(BO$_{3}$)$_2$ is a bosonic topological insulator with nonzero Chern number in the triplon bands and topologically protected chiral edge excitations.

We report on the synthesis, crystal structure, and magnetic properties of a previously unreported Co$^{2+}$ $S={3 \over 2}$ compound, (C$_{4}$H$_{12}$N$_{2}$)[CoCl$_{4}$], based upon a tetrahedral crystalline environment. The $S={3 \over 2}$ magnetic ground state of Co$^{2+}$, measured with magnetization, implies an absence of spin-orbit coupling and orbital degeneracy. This contrasts with compounds based upon an octrahedral and even known tetrahedral Co$^{2+}$ based systems where a sizable spin-orbit coupling is measured. The compound is characterized with single crystal x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, infrared, and ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy. Magnetic susceptibility measurements find no magnetic ordering above 2 K. The results are also compared with the previously known monoclinic hydrated analogue.

The lead-halide perovskites, including CH$_{3}$NH$_{3}$PbBr$_{3}$, are components in cost effective, highly efficient photovoltaics, where the interactions of the molecular cations with the inorganic framework are suggested to influence the electronic and ferroelectric properties. CH$_{3}$NH$_{3}$PbBr$_{3}$ undergoes a series of structural transitions associated with orientational order of the CH$_{3}$NH$_{3}$ (MA) molecular cation and tilting of the PbBr$_{3}$ host framework. We apply high-resolution neutron scattering to study the soft harmonic phonons associated with these transitions, and find a strong coupling between the PbBr$_{3}$ framework and the quasistatic CH$_{3}$NH$_{3}$ dynamics at low energy transfers. At higher energy transfers, we observe a PbBr$_{6}$ octahedra soft mode driving a transition at 150 K from bound molecular excitations at low temperatures to relatively fast relaxational excitations that extend up to $\sim$ 50-100 meV. We suggest that these temporally overdamped dynamics enables possible indirect band gap processes in these materials that are related to the enhanced photovoltaic properties.

The structure and dehydration mechanism of the proton conducting oxide Ba$_{2}$In$_{2}$O$_{5}$(H$_{2}$O)$_{x}$ are investigated by means of variable temperature Raman spectroscopy together with inelastic neutron scattering. At room temperature, Ba$_{2}$In$_{2}$O$_{5}$(H$_{2}$O)$_{x}$ is found to be fully hydrated ($x=1$) and to have a perovskite-like structure, which dehydrates gradually with increasing temperature and at around 600 $^{\circ}$C the material is essentially completely dehydrated ($x=0$). The dehydrated material exhibits a brownmillerite structure, which is featured by alternating layers of InO$_{6}$ octahedra and InO$_{4}$ tetrahedra. The transition from a perovskite-like to a brownmillerite-like structure is featured by a hydrated-to-intermediate phase transition at $ca.$ 370 °C. The structure of the intermediate phase is similar to the structure of the fully dehydrated material, but with the difference that it exhibits a non-centrosymmetric distortion of the InO$_{6}$ octahedra not present in the latter. For temperatures below the hydrated-to-intermediate phase transition, dehydration is featured by the release of protons confined to the layers of InO$_{4}$ tetrahedra, whereas above the transition also protons bound to oxygens of the layers of InO$_{6}$ are released. Finally, we found that the O-H stretch region of the vibrational spectra is not consistent with a single-phase spectrum, but is in agreement with the superposition of spectra associated with two different proton configurations. The relative contributions of the two proton configurations depend on how the sample is hydrated.

The vibrational spectra and short-range structure of the brownmillerite-type oxide Ba$_{2}$In$_{2}$O$_{5}$ and its hydrated form BaInO$_{3}$H, are investigated by means of Raman, infrared, and inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopies together with density functional theory calculations. For Ba$_{2}$In$_{2}$O$_{5}$, which may be described as an oxygen deficient perovskite structure with alternating layers of InO$_{6}$ octahedra and InO$_{4}$ tetrahedra, the results affirm a short-range structure of $Icmm$ symmetry, which is characterized by random orientation of successive layers of InO$_{4}$ tetrahedra. For the hydrated, proton conducting, form, BaInO$_{3}$H, the results suggest that the short-range structure is more complicated than the $P4/mbm$ symmetry that has been proposed previously on the basis of neutron diffraction, but rather suggest a proton configuration close to the lowest energy structure predicted by Martinez et al. [J.-R. Martinez, C. E. Moen, S. Stoelen, N. L. Allan, J. of Solid State Chem. 180, 3388, (2007)]. An intense Raman active vibration at 150 cm$^{-1}$ is identified as a unique fingerprint of this proton configuration.
