Neonatal resuscitations demand an exceptional level of attentiveness from providers, who must process multiple streams of information simultaneously. Gaze strongly influences decision making; thus, understanding where a provider is looking during neonatal resuscitations could inform provider training, enhance real-time decision support, and improve the design of delivery rooms and neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Current approaches to quantifying neonatal providers' gaze rely on manual coding or simulations, which limit scalability and utility. Here, we introduce an automated, real-time, deep learning approach capable of decoding provider gaze into semantic classes directly from first-person point-of-view videos recorded during live resuscitations. Combining state-of-the-art, real-time segmentation with vision-language models (CLIP), our low-shot pipeline attains 91\% classification accuracy in identifying gaze targets without training. Upon fine-tuning, the performance of our gaze-guided vision transformer exceeds 98\% accuracy in gaze classification, approaching human-level precision. This system, capable of real-time inference, enables objective quantification of provider attention dynamics during live neonatal resuscitation. Our approach offers a scalable solution that seamlessly integrates with existing infrastructure for data-scarce gaze analysis, thereby offering new opportunities for understanding and refining clinical decision making.

Open-ended questions are a favored tool among instructors for assessing student understanding and encouraging critical exploration of course material. Providing feedback for such responses is a time-consuming task that can lead to overwhelmed instructors and decreased feedback quality. Many instructors resort to simpler question formats, like multiple-choice questions, which provide immediate feedback but at the expense of personalized and insightful comments. Here, we present a tool that uses large language models (LLMs), guided by instructor-defined criteria, to automate responses to open-ended questions. Our tool delivers rapid personalized feedback, enabling students to quickly test their knowledge and identify areas for improvement. We provide open-source reference implementations both as a web application and as a Jupyter Notebook widget that can be used with instructional coding or math notebooks. With instructor guidance, LLMs hold promise to enhance student learning outcomes and elevate instructional methodologies.

We study the problem of distinguishing $b$-jets stemming from the decay of a colour singlet, such as the Higgs boson, from those originating from the abundant QCD background. In particular, as a case study, we focus on associate production of a vector boson and a Higgs boson decaying into a pair of $b$-jets, which has been recently observed at the LHC. We consider the combination of several theory-driven observables proposed in the literature, together with Lund jet plane images, in order to design an original $Hbb$ tagger. The observables are combined by means of standard machine learning algorithms, which are trained on events obtained with fast detector simulation techniques. We find that the combination of high-level single-variable observables with the Lund jet plane provides an excellent discrimination performance. We also study the dependence of the tagger on the invariant mass of the decaying particles, in order to assess the extension to a generic $Xbb$ tagger.

This paper describes the design and performance of a compact detector, BDX-MINI, that incorporates all features of a concept that optimized the detection of light dark matter produced by electrons in a beam dump. It represents a reduced version of the future BDX experiment expected to run at JLAB. BDX-MINI was exposed to penetrating particles produced by a 2.176 GeV electron beam incident on the beam dump of Hall A at Jefferson Lab. The detector consists of 30.5 kg of PbWO4 crystals with sufficient material following the beam dump to eliminate all known particles except neutrinos. The crystals are read out using silicon photomultipliers. Completely surrounding the detector are a passive layer of tungsten and two active scintillator veto systems, which are also read out using silicon photomultipliers. The design was validated and the performance of the robust detector was shown to be stable during a six month period during which the detector was operated with minimal access.

Flavour physics represents a unique test bench for the Standard Model (SM). New analyses performed at the LHC experiments are now providing unprecedented insights into CKM metrology and new evidences for rare decays. The CKM picture can provide very precise SM predictions through global analyses. We present here the results of the latest global SM analysis performed by the UTfit collaboration including all the most updated inputs from experiments, lattice QCD and phenomenological calculations. In addition, the Unitarity Triangle (UT) analysis can be used to constrain the parameter space in possible new physics (NP) scenarios. We update here also the UT analysis beyond the SM by the UTfit collaboration. All of the available experimental and theoretical information on $ΔF=2$ processes is reinterpreted including a model-independent NP parametrisation. We determine the allowed NP contributions in the kaon, $D$, $B_d$, and $B_s$ sectors and, in various NP scenarios, we translate them into bounds for the NP scale as a function of NP couplings.

The feasibility of measuring this reaction through the $J/ψ\to e^+e^-$ decay channel with the PANDA (AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt) experiment is investigated. Simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as the background rejection from various sources including the $\bar{p}p\toπ^+π^-π^0$ and $\bar{p}p\to J/ψπ^0π^0$ reactions are performed with PandaRoot, the simulation and analysis software framework of the PANDA experiment. It is shown that the measurement can be done at PANDA with significant constraining power under the assumption of an integrated luminosity attainable in four to five months of data taking at the maximum design luminosity.

Simulation results for future measurements of electromagnetic proton form factors at \PANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported. The statistical precision with which the proton form factors can be determined is estimated. The signal channel $\bar p p \to e^+ e^-$ is studied on the basis of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main background channel, $\textit{i.e.}$ $\bar p p \to π^+ π^-$, is studied. Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistical and systematical uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated using two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam conditions and detector performance.

We present the design, construction, and performance of a facility for the characterization of Silicon Avalanche Photodiodes in the operating temperature range between -2 $^\circ$C and 25 $^\circ$C. The system can simultaneously measure up to 24 photo-detectors, in a completely automatic way, within one day of operations. The measured data for each sensor are: the internal gain as a function of the bias voltage and temperature, the gain variation with respect to the bias voltage, and the dark current as a function of the gain. The systematic uncertainties have been evaluated during the commissioning of the system to be of the order of 1%. This paper describes in detail the facility design and layout, and the procedure employed to characterize the sensors. The results obtained from the measurement of the 380 Avalanche Photodiodes of the CLAS12-Forward Tagger calorimeter detector are then reported, as the first example of the massive usage of the facility.

Continuously updated flavour results contribute to improving the precision of several constraints and through the global fit of the CKM parameters and the SM predictions. We also extend the UT analysis to investigate new physics (NP) effects on $ΔF=2$ processes. Finally, based on the NP constraints, we derive upper bounds on the coefficients of the most general $ΔF=2$ effective Hamiltonian. These upper bounds can be translated into lower bounds on the scale of NP that contributes to these low-energy effective interactions.

Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion ($πN$) TDAs from $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ reaction with the future PANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $πN$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ with the PANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to π^+π^- π^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone $| \cosθ_{π^0}| > 0.5 $ in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the PANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of $5\cdot 10^7$ ($1\cdot 10^7$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=5$ GeV$^2$, and of $1\cdot 10^8$ ($6\cdot 10^6$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=10$ GeV$^2$, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around $40\%$. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to $2$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. (.../...)

Multipacting (MP) is a resonant electron discharge, often plaguing radiofrequency structures, produced by the synchronization of emitted electrons with the RF fields and by the electron multiplication at the impact point with the surface of the structure. The current of re-emitted electrons grows via true secondary re-emission when the secondary yield for the primary electron impact energy is greater than one. A simple example (MP in short-gap accelerating axial-symmetric cavities) allows an analytical solution of the equation of motion, giving both the synchronization (kinematics) and multiplication (impact energy) conditions as a function of the gap voltage (or accelerating field). Starting from this example a thorough discussion of MP discharges in axial-symmetric accelerating structures will be given and some poor man's rules are given to estimate the critical cavity field levels to meet the kinematic condition for resonance. The results of these poor man's rules are compared with computer simulations of MP discharges obtained by a statistical analysis of the re-emission yield for impinging electrons versus RF field level in the accelerating structure.

A new method for calibrating the hadron response of a segmented calorimeter is developed and successfully applied to beam test data. It is based on a principal component analysis of energy deposits in the calorimeter layers, exploiting longitudinal shower development information to improve the measured energy resolution. Corrections for invisible hadronic energy and energy lost in dead material in front of and between the calorimeters of the ATLAS experiment were calculated with simulated Geant4 Monte Carlo events and used to reconstruct the energy of pions impinging on the calorimeters during the 2004 Barrel Combined Beam Test at the CERN H8 area. For pion beams with energies between 20 GeV and 180 GeV, the particle energy is reconstructed within 3% and the energy resolution is improved by between 11% and 25% compared to the resolution at the electromagnetic scale.

In the UTA beyond the SM, we allow for New Physics (NP) effects in (Delta F)=2 processes. The hint of NP at the 2.9 sigma level in the B_s-\bar B_s mixing turns out to be confirmed by the present update, which includes the new D0 result on the dimuon charge asymmetry but not the new CDF measurement of phi_s, being the likelihood not yet released.

Guadagnoli, and an accurate prediction of BR(B -> tau nu), by using the indirect determination of |V_ub| from the UT fit, which can be compared to the present experimental result. In the generalization of the UT analysis to investigate New Physics (NP) effects, the estimate of xi is more delicate and only the effect of phi_epsilon \neq π/4 has been included. We confirm an hint of NP in the B_s-\bar B_s mixing at the 2.9 sigma level, which makes a comparison with new experimental data certainly desired.

The recently measured B -> tau nu branching ratio allows to test the Standard Model by probing virtual effects of new heavy particles, such as a charged Higgs boson. The accuracy of the test is currently limited by the experimental error on BR(B -> tau nu) and by the uncertainty on the parameters fB and |Vub|. The redundancy of the Unitarity Triangle fit allows to reduce the error on these parameters and thus to perform a more precise test of the Standard Model. Using the current experimental inputs, we obtain BR(B -> tau nu)_SM = (0.84 +- 0.11)x10^{-4}, to be compared with BR(B -> tau nu)_exp = (1.73 +- 0.34)x10^{-4}. The Standard Model prediction can be modified by New Physics effects in the decay amplitude as well as in the Unitarity Triangle fit. We discuss how to disentangle the two possible contributions in the case of minimal flavour violation at large tan beta and generic loop-mediated New Physics. We also consider two specific models with minimal flavour violation: the Type-II Two Higgs Doublet Model and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.

Combining all available experimental and theoretical information on $ΔF=2$ processes and using a model-independent parameterization, we extract the allowed New Physics contributions in the $K^0$, $D^0$, $B_d$, and $B_s$ sectors. We observe a departure of the $B_s$ mixing phase from the Standard Model expectation with a significance of about $3σ$.

Data were collected from runs with beams of different flavour (electrons, pions, muons and photons) with a momentum range of 2 to 180 GeV/c. Four independent methods were used to align the silicon modules. The corrections obtained were validated using the known momenta of the beam particles and were shown to yield consistent results among the different alignment approaches. From the residual distributions, it is concluded that the precision attained in the alignment of the silicon modules is of the order of 5 micrometers in their most precise coordinate.

With the advent of the LHC, we will be able to probe New Physics (NP) up to energy scales almost one order of magnitude larger than it has been possible with present accelerator facilities. While direct detection of new particles will be the main avenue to establish the presence of NP at the LHC, indirect searches will provide precious complementary information, since most probably it will not be possible to measure the full spectrum of new particles and their couplings through direct production. In particular, precision measurements and computations in the realm of flavour physics are expected to play a key role in constraining the unknown parameters of the Lagrangian of any NP model emerging from direct searches at the LHC. The aim of Working Group 2 was twofold: on one hand, to provide a coherent, up-to-date picture of the status of flavour physics before the start of the LHC; on the other hand, to initiate activities on the path towards integrating information on NP from high-pT and flavour data.

We update the constraints on new-physics contributions to Delta F=2 processes from the generalized unitarity triangle analysis, including the most recent experimental developments. Based on these constraints, we derive upper bounds on the coefficients of the most general Delta F=2 effective Hamiltonian. These upper bounds can be translated into lower bounds on the scale of new physics that contributes to these low-energy effective interactions. We point out that, due to the enhancement in the renormalization group evolution and in the matrix elements, the coefficients of non-standard operators are much more constrained than the coefficient of the operator present in the Standard Model. Therefore, the scale of new physics in models that generate new Delta F=2 operators, such as next-to-minimal flavour violation, has to be much higher than the scale of minimal flavour violation, and it most probably lies beyond the reach of direct searches at the LHC.

Motivated by a recent paper that compares the results of the analysis of the CKM angle alpha in the frequentist and in the Bayesian approaches, we have reconsidered the information on the hadronic amplitudes, which helps constraining the value of alpha in the Standard Model. We find that the Bayesian method gives consistent results irrespective of the parametrisation of the hadronic amplitudes and that the results of the frequentist and Bayesian approaches are equivalent when comparing meaningful probability ranges or confidence levels. We also find that from B to pi pi decays alone the 95% probability region for alpha is the interval [80^o,170^o], well consistent with recent analyses of the unitarity triangle where, by using all the available experimental and theoretical information, one gets alpha = (93 +- 4)^o. Last but not least, by using simple arguments on the hadronic matrix elements, we show that the unphysical region alpha ~ 0, present in several experimental analyses, can be eliminated.

The recent measurements of the B_s meson mixing amplitude by CDF and of the leptonic branching fraction BR(B to tau nu) by Belle call for an upgraded analysis of the Unitarity Triangle in the Standard Model. Besides improving the previous constraints on the parameters of the CKM matrix, these new measurements, combined with the recent determinations of the angles alpha, beta and gamma from non-leptonic decays, allow, in the Standard Model, a quite accurate extraction of the values of the hadronic matrix elements relevant for K-Kbar and B_{s,d}-B_{s,d}bar mixing and of the leptonic decay constant f_B. These values, obtained ``experimentally'', can then be compared with the theoretical predictions, mainly from lattice QCD. In this paper we upgrade the UT fit, we determine from the data the kaon B-parameter B_Khat, the B^0 mixing amplitude parameters f_Bs B^{1/2}_Bs and xi, the decay constant f_B, and make a comparison of the obtained values with lattice predictions. We also discuss the different determinations of V_ub and show that current data do not favour the value measured in inclusive decays.

Starting from a (new physics independent) tree level determination of rhobar and etabar, we perform the Unitarity Triangle analysis in general extensions of the Standard Model with arbitrary new physics contributions to loop-mediated processes. Using a simple parameterization, we determine the allowed ranges of non-standard contributions to |Delta F|=2 processes. Remarkably, the recent measurements from B factories allow us to determine with good precision the shape of the Unitarity Triangle even in the presence of new physics, and to derive stringent constraints on non-standard contributions to |Delta F|=2 processes. Since the present experimental constraints favour models with Minimal Flavour Violation, we present the determination of the Universal Unitarity Triangle that can be defined in this class of extensions of the Standard Model. Finally, we perform a combined fit of the Unitarity Triangle and of new physics contributions in Minimal Flavour Violation, reaching a sensitivity to a new physics scale of about 5 TeV. We also extrapolate all these analyses into a "year 2010" scenario for experimental and theoretical inputs in the flavour sector. Using the best available input we determine the universal unitarity triangle for models with minimal flavour violation (MFV) and compare it with the one in the Standard Model. We present allowed ranges for $\sin 2β$, $\sin 2α$, $γ$, $R_b$, $R_t$ and $ΔM_s$ within the Standard Model and MFV models. We also update the allowed range for the function $F_{tt}$ that parametrizes various MFV-models.

Abstract:
Within the Standard Model, a review of the current determination of the sides and angles of the CKM unitarity triangle is presented, using experimental constraints from the measurements of |ε_K|, |V_{ub}/V_{cb}|, Δm_d and from the limit on Δm_s, available in September 2000. Results from the experimental search for {B}^0_s-\bar{B}^0_s oscillations are introduced in the present analysis using the…

Results from the experimental search for {B}^0_s-\bar{B}^0_s oscillations are introduced in the present analysis using the likelihood. Special attention is devoted to the determination of the theoretical uncertainties. The purpose of the analysis is to infer regions where the parameters of interest lie with given probabilities. The BaBar "95 %, C.L. scanning" method is also commented.

A review of the current status of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix (CKM) is presented. This paper is an update of the results published in [1]. The experimental constraints imposed by the measurements of ε_K, V_{ub}/V_{cb}, Δm_d and from the limit on Δm_d are used. Values of the constraints and of the parameters entering into the constraints, which restrict the range of the \barρ and \barη parameters, include recent measurements presented at 1998 Summer Conferences and progress obtained by lattice QCD collaborations. The results are: \barρ=0.202 ^{+0.053}_{-0.059},\barη=0.340 \pm 0.035, from which the angles α, βand γof the unitarity triangle are inferred : \sin 2 α= -0.26 ^{+ 0.29}_{-0.28} ,\sin 2 β= 0.725 ^{+0.050}_{-0.060} ,γ= (59.5^{+8.5}_{-7.5})^{\circ}. Without using the constraint from ε_K, \sin 2 βhas been obtained: \sin 2 β= 0.72 ^{+0.07}_{-0.11}. Several external measurements or theoretical inputs have been removed, in turn, from the constraints and their respective probability density functions have been obtained. Central values and uncertainties on these quantities have been compared with actual measurements or theoretical evaluations. In this way it is possible to quantify the importance of the different measurements and the coherence of the Standard Model scenario for CP violation. An important result is that Δm_s is expected to be between [12.0-17.6] ps^{-1} with 68% C.L. and <20 ps^{-1} at 95% C.L. Finally relations between the CKM parameters and the quark masses are examined within a given model.

Values of the parameters entering into the constraints, which restrict the range for rho and eta parameters, include recent measurements given at 1997 Summer Conferences and progress obtained by lattice QCD collaborations.Experimental constraints imposed by the measurements of epsilon_k,V_ub/V_cb, Delta m_d and by the limit on Delta m_s, are compatible and do not show evidence for New Physics inside measurements errors. Values for the angles alpha, beta and gamma of the C.K.M. triangle have been also obtained: rho=0.156 +- 0.090, eta=0.328 +- 0.054 sin 2alpha = -0.10+-0.40, sin 2beta = 0.68 +- 0.10, gamma= 64+-12 Angles theta,theta_u,theta_d and phi proposed in the parametrisation (Phys. Lett. B5353 (1995) 114.) of the C.K.M. matrix have been also determined. Finally, as there are more constraints than the fitted rho and eta parameters, several external measurements or theoretical inputs have been removed, in turn, from the constraints and their respective values have been fitted simultaneously with rho and eta.Central values and uncertainties on these quantities have been compared with actual measurements or theoretical evaluations. In this way it is possible to quantify the importance of the different measurements and the coherence of the Standard Model scenario for CP violation.

Abstract:
A review of the current status of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix ($V_{CKM}$) is presented and a special emphasis is put on the determination of the $ρ$ and $η$ parameters. From this study it follows that, in the Standard Model, the $B^0_s$-$\bar{B^0_s}$ oscillation frequency, $Δm_s$, has to lie, with 68% C.L., between 6.5 ps$^{-1}$ and 15 ps$^{-1}$, and is below 21 ps$^{-1}$ at 95% C.L. If the interest of measuring $Δm_s$ is underlined, the importance of a precise determination of the B meson decay constant, $f_B$, is also stressed. It is proposed to obtain a precise value for this parameter from an accurate measurement of $f_D$, the D meson decay constant, using results from lattice QCD to relate D and B hadrons. A future Tau-Charm factory could accomplish this task. It is also shown that from the present measurements, assuming the validity of the Standard Model, an already accurate value of $sin 2β~=~ 0.67 ^{+0.12}_{-0.13}$ is obtained. Sofar no constraint can be obtained on $sin 2α$. The interest of having a direct measurement of $sin 2α$ and $sin 2β$ at B-factories or at other facilities is reminded. Finally constraints on SUSY parameters, in the framework of a given model, obtained from a precise measurement of the CKM matrix elements are analyzed.
