The INES System II: Ripple Correction and Absolute Calibration for IUE High Resolution Spectra

Abstract: In this paper we document the results of the study which led to the ripple correction and absolute calibration algorithms applied to the high resolution spectra processed with the NEWSIPS software for the Final Archive of the IUE Project. In this analysis, based on a very large number of spectra, we find that both K and the alpha parameters (not only the former as previously believed) vary with… ▽ More In this paper we document the results of the study which led to the ripple correction and absolute calibration algorithms applied to the high resolution spectra processed with the NEWSIPS software for the Final Archive of the IUE Project. In this analysis, based on a very large number of spectra, we find that both K and the alpha parameters (not only the former as previously believed) vary with order number. This fact, together with the finding that the central peaks of the blaze function vary also as a function of the THDA temperature (for the SWP camera) and of the date of observations (for the LWP and LWR cameras), makes the ripple correction algorithm more complex than previously considered but, at the same time, considerably more reliable. As for the high resolution absolute calibration, the method followed is similar to the one implemented in IUESIPS. The internal accuracy of the high resolution calibration is about 4%. We note that the ripple correction and absolute calibration algorithms here described apply also to IUE data processed and distributed with the INES system. △ Less

Automated classification of IUE low dispersion spectra (I)

In this paper, we compare two classification methods that can be directly applied to spectra in the archive: metric distance… ▽ More Along the life of the IUE project, a large archive with spectral data has been generated, requiring automated classification methods to be analyzed in an objective form. Previous automated classification methods used with IUE spectra were based on multivariate statistics. In this paper, we compare two classification methods that can be directly applied to spectra in the archive: metric distance and artificial neural networks. These methods are used to classify IUE low-dispersion spectra of normal stars with spectral types ranging from O3 to G5. The classification based on artificial neural networks performs better than the metric distance, allowing the determination of the spectral classes with an accuracy of 1.1 spectral subclasses.
