Abstract:
"Why are the tin isotopes soft?" has remained, for the past decade, an open problem in nuclear structure physics: models which reproduce the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in the "doubly-closed shell" nuclei, $^{90}$Zr and $^{208}$Pb, overestimate the ISGMR energies of the open-shell tin and cadmium nuclei, by as much as 1 MeV. In an effort to shed some light onto this problem, we present results of detailed studies of the ISGMR in the molybdenum nuclei, with the goal of elucidating where--and how--the softness manifests itself between $^{90}$Zr and the cadmium and tin isotopes. The experiment was conducted using the $^{94,96,98,100}$Mo($α,α^\prime$) reaction at $E_α= 386$ MeV. A comparison of the results with relativistic, self-consistent Random-Phase Approximation calculations indicates that the ISGMR response begins to show softness in the molybdenum isotopes beginning with $A=92$.

The results are in reasonable agreement with the available experimental and theoretical data, and might be applied to identify the controversial spectra. The confusion on the assignment of the ionization stage are solved in the present work.

This strong isospin dependence at large momentum transfer is not reproduced by the distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations with known spectroscopic amplitudes. The results indicate the presence of high-momentum protons and neutrons induced by the tensor interactions in ground state of 16O.

A detailed-level collisional-radiative model for the M1 transition spectrum of the Ca-like W$^{54+}$ ion as observed in an electron beam ion trap (EBIT) was constructed based on atomic data calculated by the relativistic configuration interaction method and distorted wave theory. The present calculated transition energy, rate and intensity of W$^{54+}$ M1 transitions are compared with previous theoretical and experimental values. The results are in reasonable agreement with the available experimental and theoretical data. The synthetic spectrum explained the EBIT spectrum in the 12-20 nm region, while a new possibly strong transition has been predicted to be observable with an appropriate electron beam energy. The present work provides accurate atomic data that may be used in plasma diagnostics applications.

We present laboratory spectra of the $3p$--$3d$ transitions in Fe$^{14+}$ and Fe$^{15+}$ excited with a mono-energetic electron beam. In the energy dependent spectra obtained by sweeping the electron energy, resonant excitation is confirmed as an intensity enhancement at specific electron energies. The experimental results are compared with theoretical cross sections calculated based on fully relativistic wave functions and the distorted-wave approximation. Comparisons between the experimental and theoretical results show good agreement for the resonance strength. A significant discrepancy is, however, found for the non-resonant cross section in Fe$^{14+}$. %, which can be considered as a fundamental cause of the line intensity ratio problem that has often been found in both observatory and laboratory measurements. This discrepancy is considered to be the fundamental cause of the previously reported inconsistency of the model with the observed intensity ratio between the $^3\!P_2$ -- $^3\!D_3$ and $^1\!P_1$ -- $^1\!D_2$ transitions.

Ejected material from neutron star mergers give rise to electromagnetic emission powered by radioactive decays of r-process nuclei, which is so called kilonova or macronova. While properties of the emission are largely affected by opacities in the ejected material, available atomic data for r-process elements are still limited. We perform atomic structure calculations for r-process elements: Se (Z=34), Ru (Z=44), Te (Z=52), Ba (Z=56), Nd (Z=60), and Er (Z=68). We confirm that the opacities from bound-bound transitions of open f-shell, Lanthanide elements (Nd and Er) are higher than those of the other elements over a wide wavelength range. The opacities of open s-shell (Ba), p-shell (Se and Te), and d-shell (Ru) elements are lower than those of open f-shell elements and their transitions are concentrated in the ultraviolet wavelengths. We show that the optical brightness can be different by >2 mag depending on the element abundances in the ejecta such that post-merger, Lanthanide-free ejecta produce brighter and bluer optical emission. Such blue emission from post-merger ejecta can be observed from the polar directions if the mass of the preceding dynamical ejecta in these regions is small. For the ejecta mass of 0.01 Msun, observed magnitudes of the blue emission will reach 21.0 mag (100 Mpc) and 22.5 mag (200 Mpc) in g and r bands within a few days after the merger, which are detectable with 1m or 2m-class telescopes.

A new type of neutron detector, named Stack Structure Solid organic Scintillator (S$^4$), consisting of multi-layer plastic scintillators with capability to suppress low-energy $γ$ rays under high-counting rate has been constructed and tested. To achieve $\it{n}$-$γ$ discrimination, we exploit the difference in the ranges of the secondary charged particles produced by the interactions of neutrons and $γ$ rays in the scintillator material. The thickness of a plastic scintillator layer was determined based on the results of Monte Carlo simulations using the Geant4 toolkit. With layer thicknesses of 5 mm, we have achieved a good separation between neutrons and $γ$ rays at 5 MeV$_{\rm ee}$ threshold setting. We have also determined the detection efficiencies using monoenergetic neutrons at two energies produced by the $\it{d}$+$\it{d}\to\it{n}$+$^{3}$He reaction. The results agree well with the Geant4 simulations implementing the Li$\grave{\rm e}$ge Intranuclear Cascade hadronic model (INCL++) and the high-precision model of low-energy neutron interactions (NeutronHP).

A restricted active space was employed to investigate the correlation contribution from different models. The Breit interaction and QED effects were taken into account in the relativistic configuration interaction calculation with the converged wavefunction. We present direct observation of the M1 transition between the fine structure splitting in the 4f13 5s2 5p6 2F ground state of W VIII. The spectroscopic data of few-times ionized tungsten ions are important for the future ITER diagnostics, but there is a serious lack of data. The present study is part of an ongoing effort to solve this lack. Emission from the tungsten ions produced and trapped in a compact electron beam ion trap is observed with a Czerny-Turner visible spectrometer. Spectra in the EUV range are also observed at the same time to help the identification of the previously-unreported visible lines. The observed wavelength 574.47 pm 0.03 nm (air), which corresponds to the fine structure splitting of 17402.5 pm 0.9 cm-1, shows reasonable agreement with the previously reported value 17410 pm 5 cm-1 obtained indirectly through the analysis of EUV spectra [Ryabtsev et al., Atoms 3 (2015) 273].

The visible spectrum observed at an electron beam ion trap (EBIT) in Shanghai in the range of 332 nm to 392 nm was reproduced by present calculations. Some transition pairs of which the intensity ratio are sensitive to the electron density were selected as potential candidate of plasma diagnostics. Their electron density dependence are theoretically evaluated for the cases of EBIT plasmas and magnetic confinement fusion plasmas.
