GPU-enhanced architectures are now dominant in HPC systems, but message-passing communication involving GPUs with MPI has proven to be both complex and expensive, motivating new approaches that lower such costs. We compare and contrast stream/graph- and kernel-triggered MPI communication abstractions, whose principal purpose is to enhance the performance of communication when GPU kernels create or consume data for transfer through MPI operations. Researchers and practitioners have proposed multiple potential APIs for stream and/or kernel triggering that span various GPU architectures and approaches, including MPI-4 partitioned point-to-point communication, stream communicators, and explicit MPI stream/queue objects. Designs breaking backward compatibility with MPI are duly noted. Some of these strengthen or weaken the semantics of MPI operations. A key contribution of this paper is to promote community convergence toward a stream- and/or kernel-triggering abstraction by highlighting the common and differing goals and contributions of existing abstractions. We describe the design space in which these abstractions reside, their implicit or explicit use of stream and other non-MPI abstractions, their relationship to partitioned and persistent operations, and discuss their potential for added performance, how usable these abstractions are, and where functional and/or semantic gaps exist. Finally, we provide a taxonomy for stream- and kernel-triggered abstractions, including disambiguation of similar semantic terms, and consider directions for future standardization in MPI-5.

The large variety of production implementations of the message passing interface (MPI) each provide unique and varying underlying algorithms. Each emerging supercomputer supports one or a small number of system MPI installations, tuned for the given architecture. Performance varies with MPI version, but application programmers are typically unable to achieve optimal performance with local MPI installations and therefore rely on whichever implementation is provided as a system install. This paper presents MPI Advance, a collection of libraries that sit on top of MPI, optimizing the underlying performance of any existing MPI library. The libraries provide optimizations for collectives, neighborhood collectives, partitioned communication, and GPU-aware communication.

Missing transverse momentum is a crucial observable for physics at hadron colliders, being the only constraint on the kinematics of "invisible" objects such as neutrinos and hypothetical dark matter particles. Computing missing transverse momentum at the highest possible precision, particularly in experiments at the energy frontier, can be a challenging procedure due to ambiguities in the distribution of energy and momentum between many reconstructed particle candidates. This paper describes a novel solution for efficiently encoding information required for the computation of missing transverse momentum given arbitrary selection criteria for the constituent reconstructed objects. Pileup suppression using information from both the calorimeter and the inner detector is an integral component of the reconstruction procedure. Energy calibration and systematic variations are naturally supported. Following this strategy, the ATLAS Collaboration has been able to optimise the use of missing transverse momentum in diverse analyses throughout Runs 2 and 3 of the Large Hadron Collider and for future analyses.

Parallel architectures are continually increasing in performance and scale, while underlying algorithmic infrastructure often fail to take full advantage of available compute power. Within the context of MPI, irregular communication patterns create bottlenecks in parallel applications. One common bottleneck is the sparse dynamic data exchange, often required when forming communication patterns within applications. There are a large variety of approaches for these dynamic exchanges, with optimizations implemented directly in parallel applications. This paper proposes a novel API within an MPI extension library, allowing for applications to utilize the variety of provided optimizations for sparse dynamic data exchange methods. Further, the paper presents novel locality-aware sparse dynamic data exchange algorithms. Finally, performance results show significant speedups up to 20x with the novel locality-aware algorithms.

Solid state spin qubits are promising candidates for quantum information processing, but controlled interactions and entanglement in large, multi-qubit systems are currently difficult to achieve. We describe a method for programmable control of multi-qubit spin systems, in which individual nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond nanopillars are coupled to magnetically functionalized silicon nitride mechanical resonators in a scanning probe configuration. Qubits can be entangled via interactions with nanomechanical resonators while programmable connectivity is realized via mechanical transport of qubits in nanopillars. To demonstrate the feasibility of this approach, we characterize both the mechanical properties and the magnetic field gradients around the micromagnet placed on the nanobeam resonator. Furthermore, we show coherent manipulation and mechanical transport of a proximal spin qubit by utilizing nuclear spin memory, and use the NV center to detect the time-varying magnetic field from the oscillating micromagnet, extracting a spin-mechanical coupling of 7.7(9) Hz. With realistic improvements the high-cooperativity regime can be reached, offering a new avenue towards scalable quantum information processing with spin qubits.

Production MPI codes need checkpoint-restart (CPR) support. Clearly, checkpoint-restart libraries must be fault tolerant lest they open up a window of vulnerability for failures with byzantine outcomes. But, certain popular libraries that leverage MPI are evidently not fault tolerant. Nowadays, fault detection with automatic recovery without batch requeueing is a strong requirement for production environments. Thus, allowing deadlock and setting long timeouts are suboptimal for fault detection even when paired with conservative recovery from the penultimate checkpoint.
When MPI is used as a communication mechanism within a CPR library, such libraries must offer fault-tolerant extensions with minimal detection, isolation, mitigation, and potential recovery semantics to aid the CPR's library fail-backward. Communication between MPI and the checkpoint library regarding system health may be valuable. For fault-tolerant MPI programs (e.g., using APIs like FA-MPI, Stages/Reinit, or ULFM), the checkpoint library must cooperate with the extended model or else invalidate fault-tolerant operation.

We investigate the behavior of both pure spin and spin-polarized currents measured with four probe non-local and two probe local configurations up to room temperature and under external gate voltage in a lateral graphene transistor, produced using a standard large-scale microfabrication process. The high spin diffusion length of pristine graphene in the channel, measured both directly and by the Hanle effect, and the tuning of relation between electrode resistance area present in the device architecture, allowed us to observe local tunnel magnetoresistance at room temperature, a new finding for this type of device. Results also indicate that while pure spin currents are less sensitive to temperature variations, spin-polarized current switching by external voltage is more efficient, due to a combination of the Rashba effect and change in carrier mobility by Fermi level shift

Over the past two decades, C++ has been adopted as a major HPC language (displacing C to a large extent, andFortran to some degree as well). Idiomatic C++ is clearly how C++ is being used nowadays. But, MPIs syntax and semantics defined and extended with C and Fortran interfaces that align with the capabilities and limitations of C89 and Fortran-77.Unfortunately, the language-independent specification also clearly reflects the intersection of what these languages could syntactically and semantically manage at the outset in 1993, rather than being truly language neutral. In this paper, we propose a modern C++ language interface to replace the C language binding for C++ programmers with an upward-compatible architecture that leverages all the benefits of C++11-20 for performance, productivity, and interoperability with other popular C++ libraries and interfaces for HPC. Demand is demonstrably strong for this second attempt at language support for C++ in MPI after the original interface, which was added in MPI-2, then was found to lack specific benefits over theC binding, and so was subsequently removed in MPI-3. Since C++ and its idiomatic usage have evolved since the original C++ language binding was removed from the standard, this new effort is both timely and important for MPI applications. Also, many C++ application programmers create their own, ad hoc shim libraries over MPI to provide some degree of abstraction unique to their particular project, which means many such abstraction libraries are being devised without any specific commonality other than the demand for such.

We demonstrate a new mechanical transduction platform for individual spin qubits. In our approach, single micro-magnets are trapped using a type-II superconductor in proximity of spin qubits, enabling direct magnetic coupling between the two systems. Controlling the distance between the magnet and the superconductor during cooldown, we demonstrate three dimensional trapping with quality factors around one million and kHz trapping frequencies. We further exploit the large magnetic moment to mass ratio of this mechanical oscillator to couple its motion to the spin degree of freedom of an individual nitrogen vacancy center in diamond. Our approach provides a new path towards interfacing individual spin qubits with mechanical motion for testing quantum mechanics with mesoscopic objects, realization of quantum networks, and ultra-sensitive metrology.

Composability is one of seven reasons for the long-standing and continuing success of MPI. Extending MPI by composing its operations with user-level operations provides useful integration with the progress engine and completion notification methods of MPI. However, the existing extensibility mechanism in MPI (generalized requests) is not widely utilized and has significant drawbacks.
MPI can be generalized via scheduled communication primitives, for example, by utilizing implementation techniques from existing MPI-3 nonblocking collectives and from forthcoming MPI-4 persistent and partitioned APIs. Non-trivial schedules are used internally in some MPI libraries; but, they are not accessible to end-users.
Message-based communication patterns can be built as libraries on top of MPI. Such libraries can have comparable implementation maturity and potentially higher performance than MPI library code, but do not require intimate knowledge of the MPI implementation. Libraries can provide performance-portable interfaces that cross MPI implementation boundaries. The ability to compose additional user-defined operations using the same progress engine benefits all kinds of general purpose HPC libraries.
We propose a definition for MPI schedules: a user-level programming model suitable for creating persistent collective communication composed with new application-specific sequences of user-defined operations managed by MPI and fully integrated with MPI progress and completion notification. The API proposed offers a path to standardization for extensible communication schedules involving user-defined operations. Our approach has the potential to introduce event-driven programming into MPI (beyond the tools interface), although connecting schedules with events comprises future work.
Early performance results described here are promising and indicate strong overlap potential.

This paper presents Knowledge-Based Reinforcement Learning (KB-RL) as a method that combines a knowledge-based approach and a reinforcement learning (RL) technique into one method for intelligent problem solving. The proposed approach focuses on multi-expert knowledge acquisition, with the reinforcement learning being applied as a conflict resolution strategy aimed at integrating the knowledge of multiple exerts into one knowledge base.
The article describes the KB-RL approach in detail and applies the reported method to one of the most challenging problems of current Artificial Intelligence (AI) research, namely playing a strategy game. The results show that the KB-RL system is able to play and complete the full FreeCiv game, and to win against the computer players in various game settings. Moreover, with more games played, the system improves the gameplay by shortening the number of rounds that it takes to win the game.
Overall, the reported experiment supports the idea that, based on human knowledge and empowered by reinforcement learning, the KB-RL system can deliver a strong solution to the complex, multi-strategic problems, and, mainly, to improve the solution with increased experience.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is endemic in people who inject drugs (PWID), with prevalence estimates above 60 percent for PWID in the United States. Previous modeling studies suggest that direct acting antiviral (DAA) treatment can lower overall prevalence in this population, but treatment is often delayed until the onset of advanced liver disease (fibrosis stage 3 or later) due to cost. Lower cost interventions featuring syringe access (SA) and medically assisted treatment (MAT) for addiction are known to be less costly, but have shown mixed results in lowering HCV rates below current levels. Little is known about the potential synergistic effects of combining DAA and MAT treatment, and large-scale tests of combined interventions are rare. While simulation experiments can reveal likely long-term effects, most prior simulations have been performed on closed populations of model agents--a scenario quite different from the open, mobile populations known to most health agencies. This paper uses data from the Centers for Disease Control's National HIV Behavioral Surveillance project, IDU round 3, collected in New York City in 2012 by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to parameterize simulations of open populations. Our results show that, in an open population, SA/MAT by itself has only small effects on HCV prevalence, while DAA treatment by itself can significantly lower both HCV and HCV-related advanced liver disease prevalence. More importantly, the simulation experiments suggest that cost effective synergistic combinations of the two strategies can dramatically reduce HCV incidence. We conclude that adopting SA/MAT implementations alongside DAA interventions can play a critical role in reducing the long-term consequences of ongoing infection.

We report the experimental observation of the filamentation effect in gas devices designed for X-ray Free-electron Lasers. The measurements were carried out at the Linac Coherent Light Source on the X-ray Correlation Spectroscopy (XCS) instrument using a Two-bunch FEL beam at 6.5 keV with 122.5 ns separation passing through an Argon gas cell. The relative intensities of the two pulses of the Two-bunch beam were measured, after and before the gas cell, from the X-ray scattering off thin targets by using fast diodes with sufficient temporal resolution. It was found that the after-to-before ratio of the intensities of the second pulse was consistently higher than that of the first pulse, revealing lower effective attenuation of the gas cell due to the heating and subsequent gas density reduction in the beam path by the first pulse. This measurement is important in guiding the design and/or mitigating the adverse effect in gas devices for high repetition-rate FELs such as the LCLS-II and the European XFEL or other future high repetition-rate upgrade to existing FEL facilities

We report on spin- and angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy using a high-resolution imaging spin filter based on a large Ir(001) crystal enhancing the effective figure of merit for spin detection by a factor of over $10^3$ compared to standard single channel detectors. Furthermore, we review the spin filter preparation, and its lifetime. The spin filter efficiency is mapped on a broad range of scattering energies and azimuthal angles. Large spin filter efficiencies are observed for the spin component perpendicular as well as parallel to the scattering plane depending on the azimuthal orientation of the spin filter crystal. A spin rotator capable of manipulating the spin direction prior to detection complements the measurement of three observables, thus allowing for a derivation of all three components of the spin polarization vector in multichannel spin polarimetry. The experimental results nicely agree with spin-polarized low energy electron diffraction calculations based on a fully relativistic multiple scattering method in the framework of spin-polarized density functional theory.

We report on the linear optical properties of the chiral magnet Cu2OSeO3, specifically associated with the absence of inversion symmetry, the chiral crystallographic structure, and magnetic order. Through spectroscopic ellipsometry, we observe local crystal-field excitations below the charge-transfer gap. These crystal-field excitations are optically allowed due to the lack of inversion symmetry at the Cu sites. Optical polarization rotation measurements were used to study the structural chirality and magnetic order. The temperature dependence of the natural optical rotation, originating in the chiral crystal structure, provides evidence for a finite magneto-electric effect in the helimagnetic phase. We find a large magneto-optical susceptibility on the order of V(540nm)~10^4 rad/(T*m) in the helimagnetic phase and a maximum Faraday rotation of ~165deg/mm in the ferrimagnetic phase. The large value of V can be explained by considering spin cluster formation and the relative ease of domain reorientation in this metamagnetic material. The magneto-optical activity allows us to map the magnetic phase diagram, including the skyrmion lattice phase. In addition to this, we probe and discuss the nature of the various magnetic phase transitions in Cu2OSeO3.

Abstract:
Recently suggested transformation optics-based magnifying Maxwell fisheye lenses, which are made of two half-lenses of different radii, has been fabricated and characterized. The lens action is based on control of polarization-dependent effective refractive index in a lithographically formed tapered waveguide. We have studied wavelength and polarization dependent performance of the lenses.

In this paper we study an SU(5) x A5 flavour model which exhibits a neutrino mass sum rule and golden ratio mixing in the neutrino sector which is corrected from the charged lepton Yukawa couplings. We give the full renormalizable superpotential for the model which breaks SU(5) and A5 after integrating out heavy messenger fields and minimising the scalar potential. The mass sum rule allows for both mass orderings but we will show that inverted ordering is not valid in this setup. For normal ordering we find the lightest neutrino to have a mass of about 10-50 meV, and all leptonic mixing angles in agreement with experiment.

Following the work in graphene, we report a first-principles study of electron-phonon coupling (EPC) in low-buckled (LB) monolayer silicene and germanene. Despite of the similar honeycomb atomic arrangement and linear band dispersion, the EPC matrix-element squares of the $Γ$-$E_g$ and K-$A_1$ modes in silicene are only about 50% of those in graphene. However, the smaller Fermi velocity in silicene compensates this reduction by providing a larger joint electronic density of states near the Dirac point. We predict that Kohn anomalies associated with these two optical modes are significant in silicene. In addition, the EPC-induced frequency shift and linewidth of the Raman-active $Γ$-$E_g$ mode in silicene are calculated as a function of doping. The results are comparable to those in graphene, indicating a similar non-adiabatic dynamical origin. In contrast, the EPC in germanene is found to be much reduced.

We study the process e+e- to pi+pi-J/psi at a center-of-mass energy of 4.260 GeV using a 525 pb^{-1} data sample collected with the BESIII detector operating at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider. The Born cross section is measured to be (62.9\pm 1.9\pm 3.7) pb, consistent with the production of the Y(4260). We observe a structure at around 3.9 GeV/c^2 in the π^\pm J/psi mass spectrum, which we refer to as the Z_c(3900). If interpreted as a new particle, it is unusual in that it carries an electric charge and couples to charmonium. A fit to the π^\pm J/psi invariant mass spectrum, neglecting interference, results in a mass of (3899.0\pm 3.6\pm 4.9) MeV/c^2 and a width of (46\pm 10\pm 20) MeV. Its production ratio is measured to be R=\frac{σ(e+e- to π^\pm Z_c(3900)^\mp to pi+pi-J/psi))} {σ(e+e- to pi+pi-J/psi)}=(21.5\pm 3.3\pm 7.5)%. In all measurements the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic.

In this article a concept is introduced, which allows for reduced Coulomb interaction in organic solar cells and as such for enhanced power conversion efficiencies. The concept is based on the introduction of electrically insulating, nanostructured high-k materials into the organic matrix, which do not contribute to the charge transport, however, effectively enhance the permittivity of the organic active layer and thereby reduce the Coulomb interaction. Using an analytical model it is demonstrated that even at a distance of 20 nm to the organic / inorganic interface of the nanostructure, the Coulomb interaction can be reduced by more than 15 %. The concept is implemented using P3HT:PCBM solar cells with integrated high-k nanoparticles (strontium titanate). It could be demonstrated that in comparison to a reference cell without integrated nanoparticles, the power conversion efficiencies could be improved by ~20 %.

A 2.25$\times10^8$ $\jpsi$ event sample accumulated with the BESIII detector is used to study the doubly OZI suppressed decay modes $\jpsi\toγ\of$, $ω\to\ppp$, $φ\to\kk$. A strong deviation ($>$ 30$σ$) from three-body $\jpsi\toγωφ$ phase space is observed near the $ωφ$ mass threshold that is consistent with a previous observation reported by the BESII experiment. A partial wave analysis with a tensor covariant amplitude that assumes that the enhancement is due to the presence of a resonance, the X(1810), is performed, and confirms that the spin-parity of the X(1810) is $0^{++}$. The mass and width of the X(1810) are determined to be $M=1795\pm7$(stat)$^{+13}_{-5}$(syst)$\pm$19(mod) MeV/$c^2$ and $Γ=95\pm10$(stat)$^{+21}_{-34}$(syst)$\pm$75(mod) MeV/$c^2$, respectively, and the product branching fraction is measured to be ${\cal B}(\jpsi\toγX(1810))\times{\cal B}(X(1810)\to\of)=(2.00\pm0.08$(stat)$^{+0.45}_{-1.00}$(syst)$\pm$1.30(mod))$\times10^{-4}$. %where the first error is the statistical error and the second the systematical error. These results are consistent within errors with those of the BESII experiment.

No signals are observed for either $η$ or $η^\prime$, and upper limits at the 90% confidence level are determined to be $7.3\times 10^{-4}$ and $5.0\times 10^{-4}$ for the ratios $\frac{{\mathcal B}(η\to π^+ e^- \barν_e +c.c.)}{{\mathcal B}(η\to \pip\pim\piz)}$ and $\frac{{\mathcal B}(η^\prime\to π^+ e^-\barν_e +c.c.)}{{\mathcal B}(η^\prime \to \pip\pimη)}$, respectively. These are the first upper limit values determined for $η$ and $η^\prime$ semileptonic weak decays.

The mass and width of the $P$-wave charmonium spin-singlet state $h_c(^1P_1)$ are determined by simultaneously fitting distributions of the $π^0$ recoil mass for 16 exclusive $η_c$ decay modes. The results, $M(\hc) = 3525.31 \pm 0.11 {\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.14 {\rm (syst.)}$\,MeV/$c^2$ and $Γ(\hc) = 0.70 \pm 0.28 \pm 0.22$\,MeV, are consistent with and more precise than previous measurements. We also determine the branching ratios for the 16 exclusive $η_c$ decay modes, five of which have not been measured previously. New measurements of the $η_c$ line-shape parameters in the $E1$ transition $h_c\toγη_c$ are made by selecting candidates in the $h_c$ signal sample and simultaneously fitting the hadronic mass spectra for the 16 $η_c$ decay channels. The resulting $η_c$ mass and width values are $M(η_c) = 2984.49 \pm 1.16 \pm 0.52$\,MeV/$c^2$ and $Γ(η_c) = 36.4 \pm 3.2 \pm 1.7$\,MeV.

Transformation optics (TO) has recently become a useful methodology in the design of unusual optical devices, such as novel metamaterial lenses and invisibility cloaks. Very recently Danner et al. [1] have suggested theoretical extension of this approach to birefrigent TO devices, which perform useful and different functions for mutually orthogonal polarization states of light. Theoretical designs which operate as invisibility cloak for one polarization while behaving as a Luneburg lens for another orthogonal polarization have been suggested. Here we report the first experimental realization of similar birefrigent TO designs based on lithographically defined metal/dielectric waveguides. Adiabatic variations of the waveguide shape enable control of the effective refractive indices experienced by the TE and TM modes propagating inside the waveguides. We have studied wavelength and polarization dependent performance of the resulting birefrigent TO devices. These novel optical devices considerably extend our ability to control light on submicrometer scales.

The decay of $J/ψ$ to three photons is studied using $ψ(3686)\toπ^+π^-J/ψ$ in a sample of $1.0641\times10^8$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector. Evidence of the direct decay of $η_c$ to two photons, $η_c\toγγ$, is reported, and the product branching fraction is determined to be $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\toγη_c,η_c\to γγ)=(4.5\pm1.2\pm0.6)\times10^{-6}$, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The branching fraction for $J/ψ\to3γ$ is measured to be $(11.3\pm1.8\pm2.0)\times 10^{-6}$ with improved precision.

Abstract:
Decays of the chi_{cJ} states (J=0,\ 1,\ 2) to ΛΛbar\ pi^{+} π^{-}, including processes with intermediate Σ(1385), are studied through the E1 transition psi'-->γchi_{cJ} using 106 million psi' events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII. This is the first observation of chi_{cJ} decays to the final state ΛΛbar π^{+}π^{-}. The branching ratio of the intermediate process chi_{cJ}-->Σ(1385)^{…

The branching ratio of the intermediate process chi_{cJ}-->Σ(1385)^{+/-} \barΣ(1385)^{-/+} is also measured for the first time, and the results agree with the theoretical predictions based on the color-octet effect.

Using a sample of $(225.2\pm 2.8)\times 10^6$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we present results of a study of $J/ψ\rightarrow γΛ\barΛ$ and report the first observation of the isospin violating decay $J/ψ\rightarrowΛ\barΣ^{0}+c.c.$, in which $\barΣ^{0}$ decays to $γ\barΛ$. The measured branching fractions are $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\rightarrow\barΛΣ^{0}$) = $(1.46\pm0.11\pm0.12) \times10^{-5}$ and $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\rightarrowΛ\bar{Σ^{0}}$) = $(1.37\pm0.12\pm0.11) \times10^{-5}$. We search for $Λ(1520) \rightarrow γΛ$ decay, and find no evident signal, and an upper limit for the product branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\rightarrowΛ\barΛ(1520)+c.c.)\times \mathcal{B}(Λ(1520)\rightarrowγΛ)<4.1 \times10^{-6}$ is set at the 90% confidence level. We also report the observation of $η_{c}\rightarrowΛ\barΛ$ in $J/ψ\rightarrow γη_{c}$, $η_{c}\rightarrowΛ\barΛ$ and measure the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(η_{c}\rightarrowΛ\barΛ) =(1.16\pm0.12 (stat)\pm0.19(syst)\pm0.28(PDG))\times10^{-3}$.
