Excellent optical properties of MAPbBr$_3$ allow for designing of optical single-mode waveguides and cavities in the frequency range close to the excitonic transitions. Taken together, this turns MAPbBr$_3$ into an excellent platform for probing exciton-polariton nonlinear phenomena at room temperature. Here we investigate ultrafast non-equilibrium dynamics of polaritons under pulsed fs non-resonant excitation. We demonstrate the presence of the stimulated acoustic phonon-assisted scattering regime above threshold pump fluence, characterized by the explosive growth of emission intensity, a redshift of the emission spectral maximum, spectral narrowing, and sub-picosecond emission dynamics. Our theoretical findings are well confirmed by the results of experimental measurements.

In the domain of transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers, it allows one to unveil the spin, valley, and orbital properties of many-body excitonic complexes. Here we study theoretically the impact of normal-to-plane magnetic field on trions and trion-polaritons. We demonstrate that spin and orbital effects of a magnetic field give comparable contributions to the trion energies. Moreover, as magnetic field redistributes the free electron gas between two valleys in the conductance band, the trion-photon coupling becomes polarization and valley dependent. This results in an effective giant Zeeman splitting of trion-polaritons, in-line with the recent experimental observations.

However, for the development of practical devices, it is crucial that the polariton excitations in the structure are easily tunable and exhibit strong nonlinear response. Here we study neutral and charged exciton-polaritons in an electrostatically gated planar photonic crystal slab with an embedded monolayer semiconductor MoSe$_2$ and experimentally demonstrate strong polariton nonlinearity, which can be tuned via gate voltage. We find that modulation of dielectric environment within the photonic crystal results in the formation of two distinct resonances with significantly different nonlinear response, which enables optical switching with ultrashort laser pulses. Our results open new avenues towards development of active polaritonic devices in a compact chip-compatible implementation.

We theoretically investigate a nonlinear optical response of a planar microcavity with an embedded transition metal dicalcogenide monolayer of a when an energy of a biexcitonic transition is brought in resonance with an energy of a cavity mode. We demonstrate that the emission spectrum of this system strongly depends on an external pump. For small and moderate pumps we reveal the presence of a doublet in the emission with the corresponding Rabi splitting scaling as a square root of the number of the excitations in the system. Further increase of the pump leads to the reshaping of the spectrum, which demonstrates the pattern typical for a Mollow triplet. An intermediate pumping regime shows a broad irregular spectrum reminiscent of a chaotic dynamics of the system.

Generating a pure spin current using electrons, which have degrees of freedom beyond spin, such as electric charge and valley index, presents challenges. In response, we propose a novel mechanism based on intervalley exciton dynamics in {\em arc-shaped} strained transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) to achieve the {\em exciton spin Hall effect} in an electrically insulating regime, without the need for an external electric field. The interplay between strain gradients and strain-induced pseudomagnetic fields results in a net Lorentz force on long-lived intervalley excitons in WSe$_2$, carrying non-zero spin angular momentum. This process generates an exciton-mediated pure spin Hall current, resulting in opposite-sign spin accumulations and local magnetization on the two sides of the single-layer arc-shaped TMD. We demonstrate that the magnetic field induced by spin accumulation, at approximately $\sim {\rm mT}$, can be detected using techniques such as superconducting quantum interference magnetometry or spatially-resolved magneto-optical Faraday and Kerr rotations.

We revisit the problem of a two dimensional trion in an external magnetic field. We demonstrate that the approximations used previously for finding the energy spectrum of this system break down in the experimentally accessible range of magnetic fields. It is shown that the neglect of the Coulomb-induced mixing of different Landau levels corresponding to non-interacting particles leads to a strong underestimation of the trion binding energies even at extremely high magnetic fields (hundreds of Tesla). Moreover, proper account of the Coulomb effects for certain values of the parameters can lead to the appearance of additional discrete trion states which were overlooked previously. Finally, we provide a database of the matrix elements necessary for calculation of the magnetotrion spectra for a wide class of materials.

We predict the limit cycle solution for a ring-shape bosonic condensate of exciton-polaritons confined in an optically induced rotating trap. The limit cycle manifests itself with polarization oscillations on a characteristic timescale of tens of picoseconds. The effect arises due to the interplay between orbital motion and the polarization degree of freedom. It is specific to spinor bosonic condensates and would be absent in a scalar case, where a bi-stability of stationary solutions would be observed instead. This work offers a tool of initialisation and control of qubits based on superpositions of polariton condensates characterised by different topologic charges.

We consider bosonic condensates of exciton-polaritons optically confined in elliptical traps. A superposition of two non-degenerated \textit{p}-type states of the condensate oriented along the two main axes of the trap is represented by a point on a Bloch sphere, being considered as an optically tunable qubit. We describe a set of universal single-qubit gates resulting in a controllable shift of the Bloch vector by means of an auxiliary laser beam. Moreover, we consider interaction mechanisms between two neighboring traps that enable designing two-qubit operations such as CPHASE, \textit{i}SWAP, and CNOT gates. Both the single- and two-qubit gates are analyzed in the presence of error sources in the context of polariton traps, such as pure dephasing and spontaneous relaxation mechanisms, leading to a fidelity reduction of the final qubit states and quantum concurrence, as well as the increase of Von Neumann entropy. We also discuss the applicability of our qubit proposal in the context of DiVincenzo's criteria for the realization of local quantum computing processes. Altogether, the developed set of quantum operations would pave the way to the realization of a variety of quantum algorithms in a planar microcavity with a set of optically induced elliptical traps.

We theoretically investigate the possibility of obtaining Majorana zero modes (MZMs) in penta-silicene nanoribbons (p-SiNRs) with induced \textit{p}-wave superconductivity. The model explicitly considers an external magnetic field perpendicularly applied to the nanoribbon plane, as well as an extrinsic Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC), in addition to the first nearest neighbor hopping term and \textit{p}-wave superconducting pairing. By analyzing the dispersion relation profiles, we observe the successive closing and reopening of the induced superconducting gap with a single spin component, indicating a spin-polarized topological phase transition (TPT). Correspondingly, the plots of the energy spectrum versus the chemical potential reveal the existence of zero-energy states with a preferential spin orientation characterized by nonoverlapping wave functions localized at opposite ends of the superconducting p-SiNRs. These findings strongly suggest the emergence of topologically protected, spin-polarized MZMs at the ends of the p-SiNRs with induced \textit{p}-wave superconducting pairing, which can be realized by proximitizing the nanoribbon with an \textit{s}-wave superconductor, such as lead. The proposal paves the way for silicene-based Majorana devices hosting multiple MZMs with a well-defined spin orientation, with possible applications in fault-tolerant quantum computing platforms and Majorana spintronics.

We study theoretically the dynamics of formation of such vortices and elucidate the fundamental role of the mode competition effect in determining the properties of stationary polariton states triggered by stimulated scattering of exciton-polaritons. The interplay between linear and non-linear effects is shown to result in a peculiar polariton dynamics. Light-matter coupling in a planar optical cavity substantially modifies the transport regimes in the system in presence of a short range excitonic disorder. Basing on Master equation for a resonantly coupled exciton-photon system, and treating disorder scattering in the Born-Markov approximation we demonstrate the onset of ballistic and diffusive transport regimes in the limits of weak and strong disorder respectively. We show that transport parameters governing the crossover between these two regimes strongly depend on the parameters characterizing light-matter coupling, in particular Rabi energy and detuning between excitonic and photonic modes. The presented theory agrees with recent experimental data on transport in disordered organic microcavities.

Deeply subwavelength lasers (or nanolasers) are highly demanded for compact on-chip bioimaging and sensing at the nanoscale. One of the main obstacles for the development of single-particle nanolasers with all three dimensions shorter than the emitting wavelength in the visible range is the high lasing thresholds and the resulting overheating. Here we exploit exciton-polariton condensation and mirror-image Mie modes in a cuboid CsPbBr$_3$ nanoparticle to achieve coherent emission at the visible wavelength of around 0.53~$μ$m from its ultra-small ($\approx$0.007$μ$m$^3$ or $\approxλ^3$/20) semiconductor nanocavity. The polaritonic nature of the emission from the nanocavity localized in all three dimensions is proven by direct comparison with corresponding one-dimensional and two-dimensional waveguiding systems with similar material parameters. Such a deeply subwavelength nanolaser is enabled not only by the high values for exciton binding energy ($\approx$35 meV), refractive index ($>$2.5 at low temperature), and luminescence quantum yield of CsPbBr$_3$, but also by the optimization of polaritons condensation on the Mie resonances. Moreover, the key parameters for optimal lasing conditions are intermode free spectral range and phonons spectrum in CsPbBr$_3$, which govern polaritons condensation path. Such chemically synthesized colloidal CsPbBr$_3$ nanolasers can be easily deposited on arbitrary surfaces, which makes them a versatile tool for integration with various on-chip systems.

However, the microscopic mechanisms underlying the formation of such strain-induced SPEs are still not fully clear, which hinders further efforts in their deterministic integration with nanophotonic structures for developing practical on-chip sources of quantum light. Here we investigate SPEs with single-photon purity up to 98% created in monolayer WSe$_2$ via nanoindentation. Using photoluminescence imaging in combination with atomic force microscopy, we locate single-photon emitting sites on a deep sub-wavelength spatial scale and reconstruct the details of the surrounding local strain potential. The obtained results suggest that the origin of the observed single-photon emission is likely related to strain-induced spectral shift of dark excitonic states and their hybridization with localized states of individual defects.

We theoretically investigate the spectral properties of a quantum impurity (QI) hosting the here proposed {Majorana-Ising-type quasiparticle (MIQ) excitation}. It arises from the coupling between a finite topological superconductor (TSC) based on a chain of magnetic adatoms-superconducting hybrid system and an integer large spin $S$ flanking the QI. Noteworthy, the spin $S$ couples to the QI via the Ising-type exchange interaction. As the Majorana zero-modes (MZMs) at the edges of the TSC chain are overlapped, we counterintuitively find a regime wherein the Ising term modulates the localization of a fractionalized and resonant MZM at the QI site. Interestingly enough, the fermionic nature of this state is revealed as purely of electron tunneling-type and most astonishingly, it has the Andreev conductance completely null in its birth. Therefore, we find that a resonant edge state appears as a zero-mode and discuss it in terms of a poor man's Majorana[Nature 614, 445 (2023)].

The interplay between the rotating potential and TE-TM splitting of polariton modes offers a tool of control over the spin state and the angular momentum of the condensate. Specific selection rules describing the coupling of pseudospin and angular momentum are formulated. The resonant coupling between states having linear and circular polarizations leads to the polarization beats. The effect may be seen as a polariton analogy to the electronic magnetic resonance in the presence of constant and rotating magnetic fields. We present and experimentally study the effects of the photonic spin-orbit coupling on real space propagetion of polariton wavepackets in planar semiconductor microcavities and polaritonic analogs of graphene. In particular, we demonstrate the appearance of an analog Zitterbewegung effect, a term which translates as 'trembling motion' in english, which was originally proposed for relativistic Dirac electrons and consists of the oscillations of the center of mass of a wavepacket in the direction perpendicular to its propagation. For a planar microcavity we observe regular Zitterbewegung oscillations whose amplitude and period depend on the wavevector of the polaritons. We then extend these results to a honeycomb lattice of coupled microcavity resonators. Compared to the planar cavity such lattices are inherently more tuneable and versatile, allowing simulation of the Hamilitonians of a wide range of important physical systems. We observe an oscillation pattern related to the presence of the spin-split Dirac cones in the dispersion. In both cases the experimentally observed oscillations are in good agreement with theoretical modelling and independently measured bandstructure parameters, providing strong evidence for the observation of Zitterbewegung.

Systems supporting exciton-polaritons represent solid-state optical platforms with a strong built-in optical nonlinearity provided by exciton-exciton interactions. In conventional semiconductors with hydrogen-like excitons the nonlinearity rate demonstrates the inverse scaling with the binding energy. This makes excitons stable at room temperatures weakly interacting, which obviously limits the possibilities of practical applications of the corresponding materials for nonlinear photonics. We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically, that these limitations can be substantially softened in hybrid perovskites, such as MAPbBr3 due to the crucial role of the polaron effects mediating the inter-particle interactions. The resulting exciton-polaron-polaritons remain both stable and strongly interacting at room temperature, which is confirmed by large nonlinear blueshifts of lower polariton branch energy under resonant femtosecond laser pulse excitation. Our findings open novel perspectives for the management of the exciton-polariton nonlinearities in ambient conditions.

We show that the regime of strong-light matter coupling with remarkable magnetic properties can be realized in systems based on monolayers of chromium triiodide (CrI3). This two-dimensional material combines the presence of ferromagnetic ordering with the possibility of forming strongly-bound excitonic complexes even at room temperature. Using microscopic first-principle calculations we reveal a rich spectrum of optical transitions, corresponding to both Wannier- and Frenkel-type excitons, including those containing electrons with a negative effective mass. We show that excitons of different polarizations efficiently hybridize with a photonic mode of a planar microcavity, and due to the peculiar selection rules polariton modes become well resolved in circular polarizations. The combination of very strong optical oscillator strength of excitons and cavity confinement leads to large values of the Rabi splitting, reaching 35 meV for a single monolayer, and giant Zeeman splitting between polariton modes of up to 20 meV. This makes CrI3 an excellent platform for magnetopolaritonic applications.

We develop a theoretical description of Coulomb interactions between trions (charged excitons) that define a nonlinear optical response in doped two-dimensional semiconductors. First, we formulate a microscopic theory of trion-trion interactions based on composite nature of these particles, and account for all possible exchange processes. Next, we calculate numerically the trion binding energies and corresponding three-body wavefunctions using a basis set with high expressivity. Then, using the obtained wavefunctions we calculate the matrix elements of two-trion scattering, and compare the contributions coming from direct and exchange terms. Finally, we find that the considered scattering gives significant contribution to the optical nonlinearity in monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides. In particular, this can lead to an attractive interaction in doped monolayers. Our theory opens a route for studying nonlinear properties of trion-polaritons inaccessible before.

Novel 2D material CrI3 reveals unique combination of 2D ferromagnetism and robust excitonic response. We demonstrate that the possibility of the formation of magnetic topological defects, such as Neel skyrmions, together with large excitonic Zeeman splitting, leads to giant scattering asymmetry, which is the necessary prerequisite for the excitonic anomalous Hall effect. In addition, the diamagnetic effect breaks the inversion symmetry, and in certain cases can result in exciton localization on the skyrmion. This enables the formation of magnetoexcitonic quantum dots with tunable parameters.

Recently reported large values of exciton-polariton nonlinearity of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers coupled to optically resonant structures approach the values characteristic for GaAs-based systems in the regime of strong light-matter coupling. Contrary to the latter, TMD-based polaritonic devices remain operational at ambient conditions and therefore have greater potential for practical nanophotonic applications. Here we present the study of the nonlinear properties of Ta$_2$O$_5$ slab waveguide coupled to a WSe$_2$ monolayer. We first confirm that the hybridization between waveguide photon mode and a 2D semiconductor exciton resonance gives rise to the formation of exciton-polaritons with Rabi splitting of 36 meV. By measuring transmission of ultrashort optical pulses through this TMD-based polaritonic waveguide, we demonstrate for the first time the strong nonlinear dependence of the output spectrum on the input pulse energy. Our theoretical model provides semi-quantitative agreement with experiment and gives insights into the dominating microscopic processes which determine the nonlinear pulse self-action: Coulomb inter-particle interaction and scattering to incoherent excitonic reservoir. We also confirm that at intermediate pump energies the system supports quasi-stationary solitonic regime of pulse propagation. Our results are essential for the development of nonlinear on-chip polaritonic devices based of 2D semiconductors.

Engineering the properties of quantum materials via strong light-matter coupling is a compelling research direction with a multiplicity of modern applications. Those range from modifying charge transport in organic molecules, steering particle correlation and interactions, and even controlling chemical reactions. Here, we study the modification of the material properties via strong coupling and demonstrate an effective inversion of the excitonic band-ordering in a monolayer of WSe2 with spin-forbidden, optically dark ground state. In our experiments, we harness the strong light-matter coupling between cavity photon and the high energy, spin-allowed bright exciton, and thus creating two bright polaritonic modes in the optical bandgap with the lower polariton mode pushed below the WSe2 dark state. We demonstrate that in this regime the commonly observed luminescence quenching stemming from the fast relaxation to the dark ground state is prevented, which results in the brightening of this intrinsically dark material. We probe this effective brightening by temperature-dependent photoluminescence, and we find an excellent agreement with a theoretical model accounting for the inversion of the band ordering and phonon-assisted polariton relaxation.

We theoretically investigate the nonlinearity of trion-polaritons in a two-dimensional material that arises from Coulomb interaction between quasiparticles. To evaluate the interaction constant, we solve a three-body Wannier equation precisely by expanding trion wavefunctions into a Gaussian basis. Using these wavefunctions, we calculate the trion-polariton interaction energies for the exchange processes, resolving the outstanding question of trion-trion scattering. We find that the nonlinearity is the result of the competition between different scattering channels. Such a cancellation effect is sensitive to wavefunction overlaps and depends on material parameters. Most importantly, our result shows that the nonlinear interaction between trion-polaritons is attractive, and is fivefold stronger than exciton-polariton interaction. Our work thus describes the regime where trion-polaritons offer the prospects for attractive fluids of light in monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides.

We study the optical properties of a hybrid device composed by a quantum dot (QD) resonantly coupled to a photonic mode of an optical microcavity and a Majorana nanowire: a topological superconducting segment hosting Majorana bound states (MBSs) at the opposite ends. In the regime of strong light-matter coupling, it is demonstrated that the leakage of the Majorana mode into the QD opens new optical transitions between polaritonic states formed due to hybridisation of material excitation with cavity photons, which leads to the reshaping of the Jaynes-Cummings ladder and can lead to the formation of a robust single-peak at cavity eigenfrequency in the emission spectrum. Moreover, weak satellite peaks in the low and high frequency regions are revealed for the distinct cases of highly isolated MBSs, overlapped MBSs and MBSs not well localized at the nanowire ends.

We theoretically analyze the Fano interference in a single impurity multi-Weyl semimetal hybrid system and show the emergence of the topological charge Fano effect in the bulk local density of states. In multi-Weyl semimetals, the number of Fermi arcs at the system boundaries is determined by the topological charge $J$, a direct consequence of the "bulk-boundary" correspondence principle. Analogously, we find that $J$ also modulates the bulk Fano profile of the system with an embedded quantum impurity. Thus, by increasing $J$, the Fano lineshape evolves from resonant, typical for $J=1$ (single Weyl), towards antiresonant, extrapolating to the so-called hyper Weyl semimetals with $J\gg1$. Specially for the maximum case protected by the rotational symmetry $C_{2J=6}$, namely the $J=3$ (triple Weyl), which acquires asymmetric Fano profile, the Fano parameter absolute value is predicted to be $\tan(C_{2J=6})$, where $C_{2J}\equiv(360^{\circ}/2J)$ defines the rotational angle. Hence, the Fano discretization in the $J$ term introduces the topological charge Fano effect in multi-Weyl semimetals. We also suggest a transport device where we expect that the proposed Fano effect could be detected.

Exciton-polaritons offer a versatile platform for realization of all-optical integrated logic gates due to the strong effective optical nonlinearity resulting from the exciton-exciton interactions. In most of the current excitonic materials there exists a direct connection between the exciton robustness to thermal fluctuations and the strength of exciton-exciton interaction, making materials with highest levels of exciton nonlinearity applicable at cryogenic temperatures only. Here, we show that strong polaronic effects, characteristic for perovskite materials, allow to overcome this limitation. Namely, we demonstrate the record-high value of the nonlinear optical response in nanostructured organic-inorganic halide perovskite MAPbI$_3$, experimentally detected as 19.7 meV blueshift of the polariton branch under femtosecond laser irradiation. This is substantially higher than characteristic values for the samples based on conventional semiconductors and monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides. The observed strong polaron-enhanced nonlinearity exists for both tetragonal and orthorombic phases of MAPbI$_3$, and remains stable at elevated temperatures.

We present a quantitative study of the nonlinear optical response of layered perovskites placed inside planar photonic microcavities in the regime of strong light matter coupling, when excitonic and photonic modes hybridize and give rise to cavity polaritons. Two sources of nonlinearity are specified, the saturation of the excitonic transition with increase of the optical pump and Coulomb interaction between the excitons. It is demonstrated, that peculiar form of the interaction potential, specific to multilayer structure of organic perovskites, is responsible for substantial increase of the exciton binding energy and Rabi splitting with respect to conventional semiconductor systems. This results in dominant contribution of the Rabi splitting quench effect in the nonlinear optical response. Moreover, due to the tightly bound character of excitons, the density of Mott transition is essentially higher, allowing to reach extremely large polariton blueshifts of about 50 meV, which is order of magnitude higher than in conventional semiconductors.

The composite layered structure of these materials allows for flexible modulation of their excitonic response between the limiting cases of single atomic layer and wide quasi-two-dimensional quantum well. In particular, we demonstrate that transverse electric field leads to the spatial separation of charge carriers within the inorganic layer, giving rise to strongly interacting excitons possessing built-in dipole moment. Combined with exciton binding energy of the order of hundreds of meVs, this makes hybrid perovskites an optimal platform for tailoring of nonlinear optical response at reduced dimensionality.

We consider two concentric rings formed by bosonic condensates of exciton-polaritons. A circular superfluid flow of polaritons in one of the rings can be manipulated by acting upon the second annular polariton condensate. The complex coupling between the rings with different topological charges triggers nucleation of stable Josephson vortices (JVs) which are revealed as topological defects of the angular dependence of the relative phase between rings. Being dependent on the coupling strength, the structure of the JV governs the difference of the mean angular momenta of the inner and the outer rings. At the vanishing coupling the condensates rotate independently demonstrating no correlations of their winding numbers. At the moderate coupling, the interaction between two condensates tends to equalize their mean angular momenta despite of the mismatch of the winding numbers demonstrating the phenomenology of a drag effect. Above the critical coupling strength the synchronous rotation is established via the phase slip events.

Photonic platforms are an excellent setting for quantum technologies because weak photon-environment coupling ensures long coherence times. The second key ingredient for quantum photonics is interactions between photons, which can be provided by optical nonlinearities in the form of cross-phase-modulation (XPM). This approach underpins many proposed applications in quantum optics and information processing, but achieving its potential requires strong single-photon-level nonlinear phase shifts and also scalable nonlinear elements. In this work we show that the required nonlinearity can be provided by exciton-polaritons in micropillars with embedded quantum wells. These combine the strong interactions of excitons with the scalability of micrometer-sized emitters. We observe XPM up to $3 \pm 1$ mrad per particle using laser beams attenuated to below single photon average intensity. Interfacing atomically thin van der Waals semiconductors with magnetic substrates enables additional control on their intrinsic valley degree of freedom and provides a promising platform for the development of novel valleytronic devices for information processing and storage. Here we study circularly polarized photoluminescence in heterostructures of monolayer MoSe$_2$ and thin films of ferrimagnetic bismuth iron garnet. We observe strong emission from charged excitons with negative valley polarization, which switches sign with increasing temperature, and demonstrate contrasting response to left and right circularly polarized excitation, associated with finite out-of-plane magnetization in the substrate. We propose a theoretical model accounting for magnetization-induced imbalance of charge carriers in the two valleys of MoSe$_2$, as well as for valley-switching scattering from B to A excitons and fast formation of trions with extended valley relaxation times, which shows excellent agreement with the experimental data. Polaritonic lattices offer a unique testbed for studying nonlinear driven-dissipative physics. They show qualitative changes of a steady state as a function of system parameters, which resemble non-equilibrium phase transitions. Unlike their equilibrium counterparts, these transitions cannot be characterised by conventional statistical physics methods. Here, we study a lattice of square-arranged polariton condensates with nearest-neighbour coupling, and simulate the polarisation (pseudo-spin) dynamics of the polariton lattice, observing regions with distinct steady-state polarisation patterns. We classify these patterns using machine learning methods and determine the boundaries separating different regions. First, we use unsupervised data mining techniques to sketch the boundaries of phase transitions. We then apply learning by confusion, a neural network-based method for learning labels in the dataset, and extract the polaritonic phase diagram. Our work takes a step towards AI-enabled studies of polaritonic systems.

We have observed the effect of pseudo magnetic field originating from the polaritonic analog of spin-orbit coupling (TE$-$TM splitting) on a polariton condensate in a ring-shaped microcavity. The effect gives rise to a stable four-leaf pattern around the ring as seen from the linear polarization measurements of the condensate photoluminescence. This pattern is found to originate from the interplay of the cavity potential, energy relaxation, and TE-TM splitting in the ring. Our observations are compared to the dissipative one-dimensional spinor Gross-Pitaevskii equation with the TE-TM splitting energy which shows good qualitative agreement.

The concept of gauge fields plays a significant role in many areas of physics from particle physics and cosmology to condensed matter systems, where gauge potentials are a natural consequence of electromagnetic fields acting on charged particles and are of central importance in topological states of matter. Here, we report on the experimental realization of a synthetic non-Abelian gauge field for photons in a honeycomb microcavity lattice. We show that the effective magnetic field associated with TE-TM splitting has the symmetry of Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction around Dirac points in the dispersion, and can be regarded as an SU(2) gauge field. The symmetry of the field is revealed in the optical spin Hall effect (OSHE), where under resonant excitation of the Dirac points precession of the photon pseudospin around the field direction leads to the formation of two spin domains. Furthermore, we observe that the Dresselhaus field changes its sign in the same Dirac valley on switching from s to p bands in good agreement with the tight binding modelling. Our work demonstrating a non-Abelian gauge field for light on the microscale paves the way towards manipulation of photons via spin on a chip.

Ultrafast nonlinear photonics enables a host of applications in advanced on-chip spectroscopy and information processing. These rely on a strong intensity dependent (nonlinear) refractive index capable of modulating optical pulses on sub-picosecond timescales and on length scales suitable for integrated photonics. Currently there is no platform that can provide this for the UV spectral range where broadband spectra generated by nonlinear modulation can pave the way to new on-chip ultrafast (bio-) chemical spectroscopy devices. We demonstrate the giant nonlinearity of UV hybrid light-matter states (exciton-polaritons) up to room temperature in an AlInGaN waveguide. We experimentally measure ultrafast nonlinear spectral broadening of UV pulses in a compact 100 $μ$m long device and deduce a nonlinearity 1000 times that in common UV nonlinear materials and comparable to non-UV polariton devices. Our demonstration promises to underpin a new generation of integrated UV nonlinear light sources for advanced spectroscopy and measurement.

The emergence of Hofstadter butterflies for bosons in synthetic-gauge-field antiferromagnetic patterns is theoretically studied. We report on a specific tight-binding model of artificial antiferromagnetic structures incorporating both nearest and next-to-nearest neighbour tunnelings and allowing for the formation of the fractal spectra even with the vanishing gauge field flux through the lattice. The model is applied to square and honeycomb lattices. Possible experimental realization is suggested for the lattices of microring resonators connected by waveguides. Finally, the structure of the butterflies is analyzed for different points in the magnetic Brillouin zone for both the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic patterns.

We establish simple quantitative criterium for the search of new dielectric materials with high values of the refractive index in the visible range. It is demonstrated, that for light frequencies below the band gap the latter is determined by the dimensionless parameter $η$ calculated as the ratio of the sum of the widths of conduction and valence bands and the band gap. Small values of this parameter, which can be achieved in materials with almost flat bands, lead to dramatic increase of the refractive index. We illustrate this rule with a particular example of rhenium dichalcogenides, for which we perform ab-initio calculations of the band structure and optical susceptibility and predict the values of the refractive index > 5 in a wide frequency range around 1 eV together with compratively low losses. Our findings open new perspectives in the search for the new high-index/low loss materials for all-dielectric nanophotonics.

It is well known that electrically neutral excitons can still be affected by crossed electric and magnetic fields that make them move in a direction perpendicular to both fields. We show that a similar effect appears in the absence of external electric fields, in the case of scattering of an exciton flow by charged impurities in the presence of the external magnetic field. As a result, the exciton flow changes the direction of its propagation that may be described in terms of the Hall conductivity for excitons. We develop a theory of this effect, which we refer to as the anomalous exciton Hall effect, to distinguish it from the exciton Hall effect that arises due to the valley selective exciton transport in transition metal dichalcogenides. According to our estimations, the effect is relatively weak for optically active or bright excitons in conventional GaAs quantum wells, but it becomes significant for optically inactive or dark excitons, because of the difference of the lifetimes. This makes the proposed effect a convenient tool for spatial separation of dark and bright excitons.
