We demonstrate existence of topologically nontrivial energy minimizing maps of a given positive degree from bounded domains in the plane to $\mathbb S^2$ in a variational model describing magnetizations in ultrathin ferromagnetic films with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Our strategy is to insert tiny truncated Belavin-Polyakov profiles in carefully chosen locations of lower degree objects such that the total energy increase lies strictly below the expected Dirichlet energy contribution, ruling out loss of degree in the limits of minimizing sequences. The argument requires that the domain be either sufficiently large or sufficiently slender to accommodate a prescribed degree. We also show that these higher degree minimizers concentrate on point-like skyrmionic configurations in a suitable parameter regime.

The perturbation $K$ is represented by a matrix-valued function defined on $\mathbb{S}^2$ with values in $\mathbb{R}^{3 \times 3}$. Under natural regularity conditions on $K$, we show that the family of perturbed Dirichlet energies converges, in the sense of $Γ$-convergence, to a simplified energy functional on $γ$. The reduced energy unveils how part of the antisymmetric exchange interactions contribute to an anisotropic term whose specific shape depends on the curvature of $γ$.
We also discuss the significant implications of our results for studies of ferromagnetic nanowires when Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is present.

The paper concerns the analysis of global minimizers of a Dirichlet-type energy functional defined on the space of vector fields $H^1(S,T)$, where $S$ and $T$ are surfaces of revolution. The energy functional we consider is closely related to a reduced model in the variational theory of micromagnetism for the analysis of observable magnetization states in curved thin films. We show that axially symmetric minimizers always exist, and if the target surface $T$ is never flat, then any coexisting minimizer must have line symmetry. Thus, the minimization problem reduces to the computation of an optimal one-dimensional profile. We also provide a necessary and sufficient condition for energy minimizers to be axially symmetric.

We derive four reduced two-dimensional models that describe, at different spatial scales, the micromagnetics of ultrathin ferromagnetic materials of finite spatial extent featuring perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Starting with a microscopic model that regularizes the stray field near the material's lateral edges, we carry out an asymptotic analysis of the energy by means of $Γ$-convergence. Depending on the scaling assumptions on the size of the material domain vs. the strength of dipolar interaction, we obtain a hierarchy of the limit energies that exhibit progressively stronger stray field effects of the material edges. These limit energies feature, respectively, a renormalization of the out-of-plane anisotropy, an additional local boundary penalty term forcing out-of-plane alignment of the magnetization at the edge, a pinned magnetization at the edge, and, finally, a pinned magnetization and an additional field-like term that blows up at the edge, as the sample's lateral size is increased. The pinning of the magnetization at the edge restores the topological protection and enables the existence of magnetic skyrmions in bounded samples.

The perturbation $\mathsf{K}$ that we consider is represented by a matrix-valued function defined on $M$ and with values in $\mathbb{R}^{m \times n}$. Under natural regularity hypotheses on $N$, $M$, and $\mathsf{K}$, we show that the family of these energies converges, in the sense of $Γ$-convergence, to an energy functional on $N$ of an unexpected form, which is of particular interest in the theory of magnetic skyrmions. As a byproduct of our results, we get that in the curved thin-film limit, antisymmetric exchange interactions also manifest under an anisotropic term whose specific shape depends both on the curvature of the thin film and the curvature of the target manifold. Various types of antisymmetric exchange interactions in the variational theory of micromagnetism are a source of inspiration and motivation for our work.

We present a variational treatment of confined magnetic skyrmions in a minimal micromagnetic model of ultrathin ferromagnetic films with interfacial Dzylashinksii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in competition with the exchange energy, with a possible addition of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Under Dirichlet boundary conditions that are motivated by the asymptotic treatment of the stray field energy in the thin film limit we prove existence of topologically non-trivial energy minimizers that concentrate on points in the domain as the DMI strength parameter tends to zero. Furthermore, we derive the leading order non-trivial term in the $Γ$-expansion of the energy in the limit of vanishing DMI strength that allows us to completely characterize the limiting magnetization profiles and interpret them as particle-like states whose radius and position are determined by minimizing a renormalized energy functional. In particular, we show that in our setting the skyrmions are strongly repelled from the domain boundaries, which imparts them with stability that is highly desirable for applications. We provide explicit calculations of the renormalized energy for a number of basic domain geometries.

The paper concerns the analysis of global minimizers of a Dirichlet-type energy functional in the class of $\mathbb{S}^2$-valued maps defined in cylindrical surfaces. The model naturally arises as a curved thin-film limit in the theories of nematic liquid crystals and micromagnetics. We show that minimal configurations are $z$-invariant and that energy minimizers in the class of weakly axially symmetric competitors are, in fact, axially symmetric. Our main result is a family of sharp Poincaré-type inequality on the circular cylinder, which allows establishing a nearly complete picture of the energy landscape. The presence of symmetry-breaking phenomena is highlighted and discussed. Finally, we provide a complete characterization of in-plane minimizers, which typically appear in numerical simulations for reasons we explain.

We study the existence and variational characterization of steady states in a coupled system of Gross--Pitaevskii equations modeling two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with the magnetic field trapping. The limit with no trapping has been the subject of recent works where domain walls have been constructed and several properties, including their orbital stability have been derived. Here we focus on the full model with the harmonic trapping potential and characterize minimizers according to the value of the coupling parameter $γ$. We first establish a rigorous connection between the two problems in the Thomas-Fermi limit via $Γ$-convergence. Then, we identify the ranges of $γ$ for which either the symmetric states $(γ< 1)$ or the uncoupled states $(γ> 1)$ are minimizers. Domain walls arise as minimizers in a subspace of the energy space with a certain symmetry for some $γ> 1$. We study bifurcation of the domain walls and furthermore give numerical illustrations of our results.

We consider $\mathbb{S}^2$-valued maps on a domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ minimizing a perturbation of the Dirichlet energy with vertical penalization in $Ω$ and horizontal penalization on $\partialΩ$. We first show the global minimality of universal constant configurations in a specific range of the physical parameters using a Poincaré-type inequality. Then, we prove that any energy minimizer takes its values into a fixed meridian of the sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$, and deduce uniqueness of minimizers up to the action of the appropriate symmetry group. We also prove a comparison principle for minimizers with different penalizations. Finally, we apply these results to a problem on a ball and show radial symmetry and monotonicity of minimizers. In dimension $N=2$ our results can be applied to the Oseen--Frank energy for nematic liquid crystals and micromagnetic energy in a thin-film regime.

In this paper, we consider spin-diffusion Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations (SDLLG), which consist of the time-dependent Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation coupled with a time-dependent diffusion equation for the electron spin accumulation. The model takes into account the diffusion process of the spin accumulation in the magnetization dynamics of ferromagnetic multilayers. We prove that in the limit of long times, the system reduces to simpler equations in which the LLG equation is coupled to a nonlinear and nonlocal steady-state equation, referred to as SLLG. As a by-product, the existence of global weak solutions to the SLLG equation is obtained. Moreover, we prove weak-strong uniqueness of solutions of SLLG, i.e., all weak solutions coincide with the (unique) strong solution as long as the latter exists in time. The results provide a solid mathematical ground to the qualitative behavior originally predicted by Zhang, Levy, and Fert in [Physical Review Letters 88 (2002)] in ferromagnetic multilayers.

We discuss a geometric perspective on chiral ferromagnetism. Much like gravity becomes the effect of spacetime curvature in theory of relativity, the Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction arises in a Heisenberg model with nontrivial spin parallel transport. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vectors serve as a background SO(3) gauge field. In 2 spatial dimensions, the model is partly solvable when an applied magnetic field matches the gauge curvature. At this special point, solutions to the Bogomolny equation are exact excited states of the model. We construct a variational ground state in the form of a skyrmion crystal and confirm its viability by Monte Carlo simulations. The geometric perspective offers insights into important problems in magnetism, e.g., conservation of spin current in the presence of chiral interactions.

We present an analysis of edge domain walls in exchange-biased ferromagnetic films appearing as a result of a competition between the stray field at the film edges and the exchange bias field in the bulk. We introduce an effective two-dimensional micromagnetic energy that governs the magnetization behavior in exchange-biased materials and investigate its energy minimizers in the strip geometry. In a periodic setting, we provide a complete characterization of global energy minimizers corresponding to edge domain walls. In particular, we show that energy minimizers are one-dimensional and do not exhibit winding. We then consider a particular thin film regime for large samples and relatively strong exchange bias and derive a simple and comprehensive algebraic model describing the limiting magnetization behavior in the interior and at the boundary of the sample. Finally, we demonstrate that the asymptotic results obtained in the periodic setting remain true in the case of finite rectangular samples.

These solutions are embedded into a larger family of propagating solutions found numerically. Within the considered model, we find the dependencies of the domain wall velocity on the material parameters and demonstrate that adding in-plane anisotropy may produce domain walls moving with velocities in excess of 500 m/s in realistic materials under moderate fields and currents.

We present an analytical theory of domain wall tilt due to a transverse in-plane magnetic field in a ferromagnetic nanostrip with out-of-plane anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). The theory treats the domain walls as one-dimensional objects with orientation-dependent energy, which interact with the sample edges. We show that under an applied field the domain wall remains straight, but tilts at an angle to the direction of the magnetic field that is proportional to the field strength for moderate fields and sufficiently strong DMI. Furthermore, we obtain a nonlinear dependence of the tilt angle on the applied field at weaker DMI. Our analytical results are corroborated by micromagnetic simulations.

We study existence and properties of one-dimensional edge domain walls in ultrathin ferromagnetic films with uniaxial in-plane magnetic anisotropy. In these materials, the magnetization vector is constrained to lie entirely in the film plane, with the preferred directions dictated by the magnetocrystalline easy axis. We consider magnetization profiles in the vicinity of a straight film edge oriented at an arbitrary angle with respect to the easy axis. To minimize the micromagnetic energy, these profiles form transition layers in which the magnetization vector rotates away from the direction of the easy axis to align with the film edge. We prove existence of edge domain walls as minimizers of the appropriate one-dimensional micromagnetic energy functional and show that they are classical solutions of the associated Euler-Lagrange equation with Dirichlet boundary condition at the edge. We also perform a numerical study of these one-dimensional domain walls and uncover further properties of these domain wall profiles.

A ribbon is a surface swept out by a line segment turning as it moves along a central curve. For narrow magnetic ribbons, for which the length of the line segment is much less than the length of the curve, the anisotropy induced by the magnetostatic interaction is biaxial, with hard axis normal to the ribbon and easy axis along the central curve. The micromagnetic energy of a narrow ribbon reduces to that of a one-dimensional ferromagnetic wire, but with curvature, torsion and local anisotropy modified by the rate of turning. These general results are applied to two examples, namely a helicoid ribbon, for which the central curve is a straight line, and a Möbius ribbon, for which the central curve is a circle about which the line segment executes a $180^\circ$ twist. In both examples, for large positive tangential anisotropy, the ground state magnetization lies tangent to the central curve. As the tangential anisotropy is decreased, the ground state magnetization undergoes a transition, acquiring an in-surface component perpendicular to the central curve. For the helicoid ribbon, the transition occurs at vanishing anisotropy, below which the ground state is uniformly perpendicular to the central curve. The transition for the Möbius ribbon is more subtle; it occurs at a positive critical value of the anisotropy, below which the ground state is nonuniform. For the helicoid ribbon, the dispersion law for spin wave excitations about the tangential state is found to exhibit an asymmetry determined by the geometric and magnetic chiralities.

The large curvature effects on micromagnetic energy of a thin ferromagnetic film with nonlocal dipolar energy are considered. We predict that the dipolar interaction and surface curvature can produce perpendicular anisotropy which can be controlled by engineering a special type of periodic surface shape structure. Similar effects can be achieved by a significant surface roughness in the film. We show that in general the anisotropy can point in an arbitrary direction depending on the surface curvature. We provide simple examples of these periodic surface structures to demonstrate how to engineer particular anisotropies in the film.

Recent advances in nanofabrication make it possible to produce multilayer nanostructures composed of ultrathin film materials with thickness down to a few monolayers of atoms and lateral extent of several tens of nanometers. At these scales, ferromagnetic materials begin to exhibit unusual properties, such as perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy and antisymmetric exchange, also referred to as Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), because of the increased importance of interfacial effects. The presence of surface DMI has been demonstrated to fundamentally alter the structure of domain walls. Here we use the micromagnetic modeling framework to analyse the existence and structure of chiral domain walls, viewed as minimizers of a suitable micromagnetic energy functional. We explicitly construct the minimizers in the one-dimensional setting, both for the interior and edge walls, for a broad range of parameters. We then use the methods of {$Γ$}-convergence to analyze the asymptotics of the two-dimensional mag- netization patterns in samples of large spatial extent in the presence of weak applied magnetic fields.

We consider the two-dimensional Landau-de Gennes energy with several elastic constants, subject to general $k$-radially symmetric boundary conditions. We show that for generic elastic constants the critical points consistent with the symmetry of the boundary conditions exist only in the case $k=2$. In this case we identify three types of radial profiles: with two, three of full five components and numerically investigate their minimality and stability depending on suitable parameters. We also numerically study the stability properties of the critical points of the Landau-de Gennes energy and capture the intricate dependence of various qualitative features of these solutions on the elastic constants and the physical regimes of the liquid crystal system.

We present an analytic study of domain-wall statics and dynamics in ferromagnetic nanotubes with spin-orbit-induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Even at the level of statics, dramatic effects arise from the interplay of space curvature and DMI: the domains become chirally twisted leading to more compact domain walls. The dynamics of these chiral structures exhibits several interesting features. Under weak applied currents, they propagate without distortion. The dynamical response is further enriched by the application of an external magnetic field: the domain wall velocity becomes chirality-dependent and can be significantly increased by varying the DMI. These characteristics allow for enhanced control of domain wall motion in nanotubes with DMI, increasing their potential as information carriers in future logic and storage devices.

The main focus is on the impact of extreme geometry on the structure of local minimizers representing the transition between two different constant phases. We address here the case of general non-symmetric dumbbell-shaped domains with a small constriction and general multi-well potentials. Dynamics of magnetization domain walls (DWs) in thin ferromagnetic nanotubes subject to longitudinal external fields is addressed analytically in the regimes of strong and weak penalization. Explicit functional forms of the DW profiles and formulas for the DW propagation velocity are derived in both regimes. In particular, the DW speed is shown to depend nonlinearly on the nanotube radius.

Under a magnetic field along its axis, domain wall motion in a uniaxial nanowire is much slower than in the fully anisotropic case, typically by several orders of magnitude (the square of the dimensionless Gilbert damping parameter). However, with the addition of a magnetic field transverse to the wire, this behaviour is dramatically reversed; up to a critical field strength, analogous to the Walker breakdown field, domain walls in a uniaxial wire propagate faster than in a fully anisotropic wire (without transverse field). Beyond this critical field strength, precessional motion sets in, and the mean velocity decreases. Our results are based on leading-order analytic calculations of the velocity and critical field as well as numerical solutions of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation.
