Fission at low excitation energy is an ideal playground to probe the impact of nuclear structure on nuclear dynamics. While the importance of structural effects in the nascent fragments is well-established in the (trans-)actinide region, the observation of asymmetric fission in several neutron-deficient pre-actinides can be explained by various mechanisms. To deepen our insight into that puzzle, an innovative approach based on inverse kinematics and an enhanced version of the VAMOS++ heavy-ion spectrometer was implemented at the GANIL facility, Caen. Fission of $^{178}$Hg was induced by fusion of $^{124}$Xe and $^{54}$Fe. The two fragments were detected in coincidence using VAMOS++ supplemented with a new SEcond Detection arm. For the first time in the pre-actinide region, access to the pre-neutron mass and total kinetic energy distributions, and the simultaneous isotopic identification of one the fission fragment, was achieved. The present work describes the experimental approach, and discusses the pre-neutron observables in the context of an extended asymmetric-fission island located south-west of $^{208}Pb. A comparison with different models is performed, demonstrating the importance of this "new" asymmetric-fission island for elaborating on driving effects in fission.

The space and time configurations of the dissociation of $^8$He into $^6$He+$n$+$n$, on C and Pb targets, have been explored simultaneously for the first time. The final-state interactions in the $n$-$n$ and $^6$He-$n$ channels are successfully described within a model that considers independent emission of neutrons from a Gaussian volume with a given lifetime. The dissociation on C target exhibits a dominant sequential decay through the ground state of $^7$He, consistent with neutrons being emitted from a Gaussian volume of $r_{nn}^{\rm{rms}}=7.3\pm0.6$~fm with a $n$-$n$ delay in the sequential channel of $1400\pm400$~fm/$c$, in agreement with the lifetime of $^7$He. The lower-statistics data on Pb target correspond mainly to direct breakup, and are well described using the $n$-$n$ volume measured, without any $n$-$n$ delay. The validity of the phenomenological model used is discussed.

The low-lying level structure of the unbound neutron-rich nucleus $^{13}$Be has been investigated via breakup on a carbon target of secondary beams of $^{14,15}$B at 35 MeV/nucleon. The coincident detection of the beam velocity $^{12}$Be fragments and neutrons permitted the invariant mass of the $^{12}$Be+$n$ and $^{12}$Be+$n$+$n$ systems to be reconstructed. In the case of the breakup of $^{15}$B, a very narrow structure at threshold was observed in the $^{12}$Be+$n$ channel. Contrary to earlier stable beam fragmentation studies which identified this as a strongly interacting $s$-wave virtual state in $^{13}$Be, analysis here of the $^{12}$Be+$n$+$n$ events demonstrated that this was an artifact resulting from the sequential-decay of the $^{14}$Be(2$^+$) state. Single-proton removal from $^{14}$B was found to populate a broad low-lying structure some 0.70 MeV above the neutron-decay threshold in addition to a less prominent feature at around 2.4 MeV. Based on the selectivity of the reaction and a comparison with (0-3)$\hbarω$ shell-model calculations, the low-lying structure is concluded to most probably arise from closely spaced J$^π$=1/2$^+$ and 5/2$^+$ resonances (E$_r$=0.40$\pm$0.03 and 0.85$^{+0.15}_{-0.11}$ MeV), whilst the broad higher-lying feature is a second 5/2$^+$ level (E$_r$=2.35$\pm$0.14 MeV). Taken in conjunction with earlier studies, it would appear that the lowest 1/2$^+$ and 1/2$^-$ levels lie relatively close together below 1 MeV.

The $0^+$ ground state (g.s.) of $^8$He and excited states, $2^+$ at $3.6-3.9$ MeV and $(1^+)$ at $5.3-5.5$ MeV, were populated with cross sections of 200, 100-250, and 90-125 $μ$b/sr, respectively. Some evidence for $^8$He state at about 7.5 MeV is obtained. We discuss a possible nature of the near-threshold anomaly above 2.14 MeV in $^8$He and relate it to the population of a $1^-$ continuum (soft dipole excitation) with peak value at about 3 MeV. The lowest energy group of events in the $^{10}$He spectrum was observed at $\sim 3$ MeV with a cross section of $\sim 140$ $μ$b/sr. We argue that this result is possibly consistent with the previously reported observation of $^{10}$He, in that case providing a new g.s. position for $^{10}$He at about 3 MeV.

The coincident detection of the beam velocity $^{15}$B fragment and neutron allowed the relative energy of the in-flight decay of $^{16}$B to be reconstructed. The resulting spectrum exhibited a narrow peak some 85 keV above threshold. It is argued that this feature corresponds to a very narrow ($Γ\ll $100 keV) resonance, or an unresolved multiplet, with a dominant $π(p_{3/2})^{-1} \otimes ν(d_{5/2}^3)_{J=3/2^+}$ + $π(p_{3/2})^{-1} \otimes ν(d_{5/2}^2,s_{1/2})_{J=3/2^+}$ configuration which decays by d-wave neutron emission.

The $B$(E1;$1/2^+\to1/2^-$) strength for $^{11}$Be has been extracted from intermediate energy Coulomb excitation measurements, over a range of beam energies using a new reaction model, the extended continuum discretized coupled channels (XCDCC) method. In addition, a measurement of the excitation cross section for $^{11}$Be+$^{208}$Pb at 38.6 MeV/nucleon is reported. The $B$(E1) strength of 0.105(12) e$^2$fm$^2$ derived from this measurement is consistent with those made previously at 60 and 64 MeV/nucleon, i n contrast to an anomalously low result obtained at 43 MeV/nucleon. By coupling a multi-configuration description of the projectile structure with realistic reaction theory, the XCDCC model provides for the first time a fully quantum mechanical description of Coulomb excitation. The XCDCC calculations reveal that the excitation process involves significant contributions from nuclear, continuum, and higher-order effects. An analysis of the present and two earlier intermediate energy measurements yields a combined B(E1) strength of 0.105(7) e$^2$fm$^2$. This value is in good agreement with the value deduced independently from the lifetime of the $1/2^-$ state in $^{11}$Be, and has a comparable p recision.

The relation between the pre-scission neutron multiplicity and each reaction process having different reaction time is investigated. In order to study the fusion-fission process accompanied by neutron emission, the fluctuation-dissipation model combined with a statistical model is employed. It is found that the fusion-fission process and the quasi-fission process are clearly distinguished in correlation with the pre-scission neutron multiplicity.

The normalization procedure used to extract the cross sections is based on the np elastic scattering reaction that we measured and for which we present experimental results. A good control of the systematic uncertainties affecting the results is achieved. Calculations using the exciton model are reported. Two different theoretical approches proposed to improve its predictive power regarding the complex particle emission are tested. The capabilities of each approach is illustrated by comparison with the 96 MeV data that we measured, and with other experimental results available in the literature.

After going through the ionization chamber, products of reactions on 12C, 18O targets are implanted in a Si detector. Their identification through their alpha decay chain is ambiguous when their half-life is short. After calibration with Pb and Th nuclei, the ionization chamber signal allowed us to resolve these ambiguities. In the search for rare super-heavy nuclei produced in fusion reactions in inverse or symmetric kinematics, such a chamber will provide direct information on the nuclear charge of each implanted nucleus.

The experimental values of evaporation residues in the 86Kr+136Xe reaction were about 500 times larger than that in the 86Kr+130Xe reaction. These results are explained by the initial angular momentum dependence of the fusion excitation functions calculated in framework of the dinuclear system concept and by the differences in survival probabilities calculated in framework of advanced statistical model. The dependencies of the fission barrier and the Γ_n / Γ_f ratio on the angular momentum of the excited compound nucleus are taken into account.

The two-neutron halo nucleus 14Be has been investigated in a kinematically complete measurement of the fragments (12Be and neutrons) produced in dissociation at 35 MeV/nucleon on C and Pb targets. Two-neutron removal cross-sections, neutron angular distributions and invariant mass spectra characteristic of a halo were observed and the electromagnetic (EMD) contributions deduced. Comparison with three-body model predictions indicate that the halo wavefunction contains a large 2s1/2^2 admixture. The EMD invariant mass spectrum exhibited a relatively narrow structure near threshold (Edecay=1.8+/-0.1 MeV, Gamma = 0.8+/-0.4 MeV) consistent with a soft-dipole excitation.

Multi-fragment decays of 129Xe, 197Au, and 238U projectiles in collisions with Be, C, Al, Cu, In, Au, and U targets at energies between E/A = 400 MeV and 1000 MeV have been studied with the ALADIN forward-spectrometer at SIS. By adding an array of 84 Si-CsI(Tl) telescopes the solid-angle coverage of the setup was extended to θ_lab = 16 degree. This permitted the complete detection of fragments from the projectile-spectator source.
The dominant feature of the systematic set of data is the Z_bound universality that is obeyed by the fragment multiplicities and correlations. These observables are invariant with respect to the entrance channel if plotted as a function of Z_bound, where Z_bound is the sum of the atomic numbers Z_i of all projectile fragments with Z_i \geq 2. No significant dependence on the bombarding energy nor on the target mass is observed. The dependence of the fragment multiplicity on the projectile mass follows a linear scaling law.
The reasons for and the limits of the observed universality of spectator fragmentation are explored within the realm of the available data and with model studies. It is found that the universal properties should persist up to much higher bombarding energies than explored in this work and that they are consistent with universal features exhibited by the intranuclear cascade and statistical multifragmentation models.
