Abstract:
The central exclusive production of charged-hadron pairs in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is examined, based on data collected in a special high-$β^*$ run of the LHC. The central exclusive production of charged-hadron pairs in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is examined, based on data collected in a special high-$β^*$ run of the LHC. The nonresonant continuum processes are studied with the invariant mass of the centrally produced two-pion system in the resonance-free region, $m_{π^+π^-}$ $\lt$ 0.7 GeV or $m_{π^+π^-}$ $\gt$ 1.8 GeV. Differential cross sections as functions of the azimuthal angle between the surviving protons, squared exchanged four-momenta, and $m_{π^+π^-}$ are measured in a wide region of scattered proton transverse momenta, between 0.2 and 0.8 GeV, and for pion rapidities $\lvert y\rvert$ $\lt$ 2. A rich structure of interactions related to double-pomeron exchange is observed. A parabolic minimum in the distribution of the two-proton azimuthal angle is observed for the first time. It can be interpreted as an effect of additional pomeron exchanges between the protons from the interference between the bare and the rescattered amplitudes. After model tuning, various physical quantities are determined that are related to the pomeron cross section, proton-pomeron and meson-pomeron form factors, pomeron trajectory and intercept, and coefficients of diffractive eigenstates of the proton.

A search is presented for high-mass exclusive diphoton production via photon-photon fusion in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV in events where both protons survive the interaction. The analysis utilizes data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 103 fb$^{-1}$ collected in 2016-2018 with the central CMS detector and the CMS and TOTEM precision proton spectrometer (PPS). Events that have two photons with high transverse momenta ($p_\mathrm{T}^γ> $ 100 GeV), back-to-back in azimuth, and with a large diphoton invariant mass ($m_{γγ} \gt$ 350 GeV) are selected. To remove the dominant inclusive diphoton backgrounds, the kinematic properties of the protons detected in PPS are required to match those of the central diphoton system. Only events having opposite-side forward protons detected with a fractional momentum loss between 0.035 and 0.15 (0.18) for the detectors on the negative (positive) side of CMS are considered. One exclusive diphoton candidate is observed for an expected background of 1.1 events. Limits at 95% confidence level are derived for the four-photon anomalous coupling parameters $\lvertζ_1\rvert \lt$ 0.073 TeV$^{-4}$ and $\lvertζ_2\rvert \lt$ 0.15 TeV$^{-4}$, using an effective field theory. Additionally, upper limits are placed on the production of axion-like particles with coupling strength to photons $f^{-1}$ that varies from 0.03 TeV$^{-1}$ to 1 TeV$^{-1}$ over the mass range from 500 to 2000 GeV.

The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb$^{-1}$ collected in 2016 using the CMS and TOTEM detectors at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC. Events are selected with a diphoton invariant mass above 350 GeV and with both protons intact in the final state, to reduce backgrounds from strong interactions. The events of interest are those where the invariant mass and rapidity calculated from the momentum losses of the forward-moving protons matches the mass and rapidity of the central, two-photon system. No events are found that satisfy this condition. Interpreting this result in an effective dimension-8 extension of the standard model, the first limits are set on the two anomalous four-photon coupling parameters. If the other parameter is constrained to its standard model value, the limits at 95% CL are $\lvertζ_1\rvert$ $\lt$ 2.9 $\times$ 10$^{-13}$ GeV$^{-4}$ and $\lvertζ_2\rvert$ $\lt$ 6.0 $\times$ 10$^{-13}$ GeV$^{-4}$.

Events where the two leading jets are separated by a pseudorapidity interval devoid of particle activity, known as jet-gap-jet events, are studied in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV. The signature is expected from hard color-singlet exchange. Each of the highest transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$) jets must have $p_\mathrm{T}^\text{jet}$ $\gt$ 40 GeV and pseudorapidity 1.4 $\lt$ $|η^\text{jet}|$ $\lt$ 4.7, with $η^\text{jet1} η^\text{jet2}$ $\lt$ 0, where $\text{jet1}$ and $\text{jet2}$ are the leading and subleading jets in $p_\mathrm{T}$, respectively. The analysis is based on data collected by the CMS and TOTEM experiments during a low luminosity, high-$β^*$ run at the CERN LHC in 2015, with an integrated luminosity of 0.66 pb$^{-1}$. Events with a low number of charged particles with $p_\mathrm{T}$ $\gt$ 0.2 GeV in the interval $|η|$ $\lt$ 1 between the jets are observed in excess of calculations that assume only color-exchange. The fraction of events produced via color-singlet exchange, $f_\text{CSE}$, is measured as a function of $p_\mathrm{T}^\text{jet2}$, the pseudorapidity difference between the two leading jets, and the azimuthal angular separation between the two leading jets. The fraction $f_\text{CSE}$ has values of 0.4-1.0%. The results are compared with previous measurements and with predictions from perturbative quantum chromodynamics. In addition, the first study of jet-gap-jet events detected in association with an intact proton using a subsample of events with an integrated luminosity of 0.40 pb$^{-1}$ is presented. The intact protons are detected with the Roman pot detectors of the TOTEM experiment. The $f_\text{CSE}$ in this sample is 2.91 $\pm$ 0.70 (stat) $^{+1.08}_{-1.01}$ (syst) times larger than that for inclusive dijet production in dijets with similar kinematics.

Measurements are presented of the single-diffractive dijet cross section and the diffractive cross section as a function of the proton fractional momentum loss $ξ$ and the four-momentum transfer squared $t$. Both processes pp$\to$pX and pp$\to$Xp, ie with the proton scattering to either side of the interaction point, are measured, where X includes at least two jets; the results of the two processes are averaged. The analyses are based on data collected simultaneously with the CMS and TOTEM detectors at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$= 8 TeV during a dedicated run with $β^{\ast} =$ 90 m at low instantaneous luminosity and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 37.5 nb$^{-1}$. The single-diffractive dijet cross section $σ^\mathrm{pX}_{\mathrm{jj}}$, in the kinematic region $ξ\lt$ 0.1, 0.03 $\lt |$t$| \lt 1$ GeV$^2$, with at least two jets with transverse momentum $p_\mathrm{T} >$ 40 GeV, and pseudorapidity $|η| \lt$ 4.4, is 21.7$\pm$0.9 (stat)$^{+3.0}_{-3.3}$ (syst) $\pm$ 0.9 (lum) nb. The ratio of the single-diffractive to inclusive dijet yields, normalised per unit of $ξ$, is presented as a function of $x$, the longitudinal momentum fraction of the proton carried by the struck parton. The ratio in the kinematic region defined above, for $x$ values in the range $-$2.9 $\leq \log_{10} x \leq$ $-$1.6, is $R = (σ^\mathrm{pX}_{\mathrm{jj}}/Δξ)/σ_{\mathrm{jj}} =$ 0.025$\pm$0.001 (stat) $\pm$ 0.003 (syst), where $σ^\mathrm{pX}_{\mathrm{jj}}$ and $σ_{\mathrm{jj}}$ are the single-diffractive and inclusive dijet cross sections, respectively. The results are compared with predictions from models of diffractive and nondiffractive interactions. Monte Carlo predictions based on the HERA diffractive parton distribution functions agree well with the data when corrected for the effect of soft rescattering between the spectator partons.

One of the two scattered protons is measured in the CMS-TOTEM precision proton spectrometer (CT-PPS), which operated for the first time in 2016. The second proton either remains intact or is excited and then dissociates into a low-mass state p$^{*}$, which is undetected. The measurement is based on an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb$^{-1}$ collected during standard, high-luminosity LHC operation. A total of 12 $μ^+μ^-$ and 8 e$^+$e$^-$ pairs with $m(\ell^{+}\ell^{-}) >$ 110 GeV, and matching forward proton kinematics, are observed, with expected backgrounds of 1.49 $\pm$ 0.07 (stat) $\pm$ 0.53 (syst) and 2.36 $\pm$ 0.09 (stat) $\pm$ 0.47 (syst), respectively. This corresponds to an excess of more than five standard deviations over the expected background. The present result constitutes the first observation of proton-tagged $γγ$ collisions at the electroweak scale. This measurement also demonstrates that CT-PPS performs according to the design specifications.

The measurement reported here considers charged particles with p_T > 0 MeV/c, produced in inelastic interactions with at least one charged particle in -7 < eta < -6 or 3.7 < eta <4.8 . The dN(ch)/deta has been found to decrease with |eta|, from 5.11 +- 0.73 at eta = 3.95 to 1.81 +- 0.56 at eta= - 6.925. Several MC generators are compared to the data and are found to be within the systematic uncertainty of the measurement.

Precise knowledge of the beam optics at the LHC is crucial to fulfil the physics goals of the TOTEM experiment, where the kinematics of the scattered protons is reconstructed with the near-beam telescopes -- so-called Roman Pots (RP). Before being detected, the protons' trajectories are influenced by the magnetic fields of the accelerator lattice. Thus precise understanding of the proton transport is of key importance for the experiment. A novel method of optics evaluation is proposed which exploits kinematical distributions of elastically scattered protons observed in the RPs. Theoretical predictions, as well as Monte Carlo studies, show that the residual uncertainty of this optics estimation method is smaller than 0.25 percent.

The other two categories are disjoint subsets of the inclusive sample that are either enhanced or depleted in single diffractive dissociation events. The data are compared to models used to describe high-energy hadronic interactions. None of the models considered provide a consistent description of the measured distributions.

After careful study of the accelerator optics and the detector alignment, |t|, the square of four-momentum transferred in the elastic scattering process, has been determined with an uncertainty of d t = 0.1GeV p|t|. In this letter, first results of the differential cross section are presented covering a |t|-range from 0.36 to 2.5GeV2. The differential cross-section in the range 0.36 < |t| < 0.47 GeV2 is described by an exponential with a slope parameter B = (23.6{\pm}0.5stat {\pm}0.4syst)GeV-2, followed by a significant diffractive minimum at |t| = (0.53{\pm}0.01stat{\pm}0.01syst)GeV2. For |t|-values larger than ~ 1.5GeV2, the cross-section exhibits a power law behaviour with an exponent of -7.8_\pm} 0.3stat{\pm}0.1syst. When compared to predictions based on the different available models, the data show a strong discriminative power despite the small t-range covered.
