A direct consequence of Faraday rotation is that the polarized radio sky does not resemble the total intensity sky at long wavelengths. We analyze G137+7, which is undetectable in total intensity but appears as a depolarization feature. We use the first polarization maps from the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment. Our $400-729$ MHz bandwidth and angular resolution, $17'$ to $30'$, allow us to use Faraday synthesis to analyze the polarization structure. In polarized intensity and polarization angle maps, we find a "tail" extending $10^\circ$ from the "head" and designate the combined object the "tadpole". Similar polarization angles, distinct from the background, indicate that the head and tail are physically associated. The head appears as a depolarized ring in single channels, but wideband observations show that it is a Faraday rotation feature. Our investigations of H I and H$α$ find no connections to the tadpole. The tail suggests motion of either the gas or an ionizing star through the ISM; the B2(e) star HD 20336 is a candidate. While the head features a coherent, $\sim -8$ rad m$^2$ Faraday depth, Faraday synthesis also identifies multiple components in both the head and tail. We verify the locations of the components in the spectra using QU fitting. Our results show that $\sim$octave-bandwidth Faraday rotation observations at $\sim 600$ MHz are sensitive to low-density ionized or partially-ionized gas which is undetectable in other tracers.

Advances in underwater imaging enable the collection of extensive seafloor image datasets that are necessary for monitoring important benthic ecosystems. The ability to collect seafloor imagery has outpaced our capacity to analyze it, hindering expedient mobilization of this crucial environmental information. Recent machine learning approaches provide opportunities to increase the efficiency with which seafloor image datasets are analyzed, yet large and consistent datasets necessary to support development of such approaches are scarce. Here we present BenthicNet: a global compilation of seafloor imagery designed to support the training and evaluation of large-scale image recognition models. An initial set of over 11.4 million images was collected and curated to represent a diversity of seafloor environments using a representative subset of 1.3 million images. These are accompanied by 2.6 million annotations translated to the CATAMI scheme, which span 190,000 of the images. A large deep learning model was trained on this compilation and preliminary results suggest it has utility for automating large and small-scale image analysis tasks. The compilation and model are made openly available for use by the scientific community at https://doi.org/10.20383/103.0614.

The Polarisation Sky Survey of the Universe's Magnetism (POSSUM) will conduct a sensitive $\sim$1 GHz radio polarization survey covering 20 000 square degrees of the Southern sky with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). In anticipation of the full survey, we analyze pilot observations of low-band (800-1087 MHz), mid-band (1316-1439 MHz), and combined-band observations for an extragalactic field and a Galactic-plane field (low-band only). Using the POSSUM processing pipeline, we produce prototype RM catalogs that are filtered to construct prototype RM grids. We assess typical RM grid densities and RM uncertainties and their dependence on frequency, bandwidth, and Galactic latitude. We present a median filter method for separating foreground diffuse emission from background components, and find that after application of the filter, 99.5% of measured RMs of simulated sources are within 3$σ$ of their true RM, with a typical loss of polarized intensity of 5% $\pm$ 5%. We find RM grid densities of 35.1, 30.6, 37.2, and 13.5 RMs per square degree and median uncertainties on RM measurements of 1.55, 12.82, 1.06, and 1.89 rad m$^{-2}$ for the median-filtered low-band, mid-band, combined-band, and Galactic observations, respectively. We estimate that the full POSSUM survey will produce an RM catalog of $\sim$775 000 RMs with median-filtered low-band observations and $\sim$877 000 RMs with median-filtered combined-band observations. We construct a structure function from the Galactic RM catalog, which shows a break at $0.7^{\circ}$, corresponding to a physical scale of 12-24 pc for the nearest spiral arm.

Deep radio surveys of extragalactic legacy fields trace a large range of spatial and brightness temperature sensitivity scales, and therefore have differing biases to radio-emitting physical components within galaxies. This is particularly true of radio surveys performed at less than 1 arcsec angular resolutions, and so robust comparisons are necessary to better understand the biases present in each survey. We present a multi-resolution and multi-wavelength analysis of the sources detected in a new Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) survey of the CANDELS GOODS-North field. For the 24 VLBA-selected sources described in Paper I, we augment the VLBA data with EVN data, ~0.1-1 arcsecond angular resolution data provided by VLA and e-MERLIN. This sample includes new AGN detected in this field, thanks to a new source extraction technique that adopts priors from ancillary multi-wavelength data. The high brightness temperatures of these sources (Tb > 10^6 K) confirm AGN cores, that would often be missed or ambiguous in lower-resolution radio data of the same sources. Furthermore, only 15 sources are identified as 'radiative' AGN based on available X-ray and infrared constraints. By combining VLA and VLBA measurements, we find evidence that the majority of the extended radio emission is also AGN dominated, with only 3 sources with evidence for extended potentially star-formation dominated radio emission. We demonstrate the importance of wide-field multi-resolution (arcsecond-milliarcsecond) coverage of the faint radio source population, for a complete picture of the multi-scale processes within these galaxies.

The first two RACS observing epochs, at 887.5 (RACS-low) and 1367.5 (RACS-mid) MHz, have been released (McConnell et al., 2020; Duchesne et al., 2023). A catalogue of radio sources from RACS-low has also been released, covering the sky south of declination +30$^\circ$ (Hale et al., 2021). With this paper, we describe and release the first set of catalogues from RACS-mid, covering the sky below declination +49$^\circ$. The catalogues are created in a similar manner to the RACS-low catalogue, and we discuss this process and highlight additional changes. The general purpose primary catalogue covering 36 200 deg$^2$ features a variable angular resolution to maximise sensitivity and sky coverage across the catalogued area, with a median angular resolution of 11.2" times 9.3". The primary catalogue comprises 3 105 668 radio sources, including those in the Galactic Plane (2 861 923 excluding Galactic latitudes of $|b|<5^\circ$) and we estimate the catalogue to be 95% complete for sources above 1.6 mJy. With the primary catalogue, we also provide two auxiliary catalogues. The first is a fixed-resolution, 25-arcsec catalogue approximately matching the sky coverage of the RACS-low catalogue. This 25-arcsec catalogue is constructed identically to the primary catalogue, except images are convolved to a less-sensitive 25-arcsec angular resolution. The second auxiliary catalogue is designed for time-domain science, and is the concatenation of source-lists from the original RACS-mid images with no additional convolution, mosaicking, or de-duplication of source entries to avoid losing time-variable signals. All three RACS-mid catalogues, and all RACS data products, are available through the CSIRO ASKAP Science Data Archive (CASDA).

This paper presents the results of 475 hours of interferometric observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array towards the Spiderweb protocluster at \(z=2.16\). We search for large, extended molecular gas reservoirs among 46 previously detected CO(1-0) emitters, employing a customised method we developed. Based on the CO emission images and position-velocity diagrams, as well as the ranking of sources using a binary weighting of six different criteria, we have identified 14 robust and 7 tentative candidates that exhibit large extended molecular gas reservoirs. These extended reservoirs are defined as having sizes greater than 40 kpc or super-galactic scale. This result suggests a high frequency of extended gas reservoirs, comprising at least \(30 \%\) of our CO-selected sample. An environmental study of the candidates is carried out based on N-th nearest neighbour and we find that the large molecular gas reservoirs tend to exist in denser regions. The spatial distribution of our candidates is mainly centred on the core region of the Spiderweb protocluster. The performance and adaptability of our method are discussed. We found 13 (potentially) extended gas reservoirs located in nine galaxy (proto)clusters from the literature. We noticed that large extended molecular gas reservoirs surrounding (normal) star-forming galaxies in protoclusters are rare. This may be attributable to the lack of observations low-J CO transitions and the lack of quantitative analyses of molecular gas morphologies. The large gas reservoirs in the Spiderweb protocluster are a potential source of the intracluster medium seen in low redshift Virgo- or Coma-like galaxy clusters.

The point-spread function (PSF) is a fundamental property of any astronomical instrument. In interferometers, differing array configurations combined with their $uv$ coverage, and various weighting schemes can produce an irregular but deterministic PSF. As a result, the PSF is often deconvolved using CLEAN-style algorithms to improve image fidelity. In this paper, we revisit a significant effect that causes the flux densities measured with any interferometer to be systematically offset from the true values. Using a suite of carefully controlled simulations, we show that the systematic offset originates from a mismatch in the units of the image produced by these CLEAN-style algorithms. We illustrate that this systematic error can be significant, ranging from a few to tens of per cent. Accounting for this effect is important for current and future interferometric arrays, such as MeerKAT, LOFAR and the SKA, whose core-dominated configuration naturally causes an irregular PSF. We show that this offset is independent of other systematics, and can worsen due to some factors such as the goodness of the fit to the PSF, the deconvolution depth, and the signal-to-noise of the source. Finally, we present several methods that can reduce this effect to just a few per cent.

The Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) radio telescope has carried out a survey of the entire Southern Sky at 887.5MHz. The wide area, high angular resolution, and broad bandwidth provided by the low-band Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey (RACS-low) allow the production of a next-generation rotation measure (RM) grid across the entire Southern Sky. Here we introduce this project as Spectral and Polarisation in Cutouts of Extragalactic sources from RACS (SPICE-RACS). In our first data release, we image 30 RACS-low fields in Stokes $I$, $Q$, $U$ at 25'' angular resolution, across 744 to 1032MHz with 1MHz spectral resolution. Using a bespoke, highly parallelised, software pipeline we are able to rapidly process wide-area spectro-polarimetric ASKAP observations. Notably, we use 'postage stamp' cutouts to assess the polarisation properties of \ncomponents\ radio components detected in total intensity. We find that our Stokes $Q$ and $U$ images have an rms noise of ~80$μ$Jy/PSF, and our correction for instrumental polarisation leakage allows us to characterise components with >1% polarisation fraction over most of the field of view. We produce a broadband polarised radio component catalogue that contains \nrms\ RM measurements over an area of ~1300deg^2 with an average error in RM of 1.6+1.1-1.0rad/m^2, and an average linear polarisation fraction 3.4+3.0-1.6%. We determine this subset of components using the conditions that the polarised signal-to-noise ratio is $>8$, the polarisation fraction is above our estimated polarised leakage, and the Stokes $I$ spectrum has a reliable model. Our catalogue provides an areal density of $4\pm2$ RMs/deg^2; an increase of $\sim4$ times over the previous state-of-the-art (Taylor et al. 2009). Meaning that, having used just 3% of the RACS-low sky area, we have produced the 3rd largest RM catalogue to date. This catalogue has broad applications for studying...

The Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) is being used to undertake a campaign to rapidly survey the sky in three frequency bands across its operational spectral range. The first pass of the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey (RACS) at 887.5 MHz in the low band has already been completed, with images, visibility datasets, and catalogues made available to the wider astronomical community through the CSIRO ASKAP Science Data Archive (CASDA). This work presents details of the second observing pass in the mid band at 1367.5 MHz, RACS-mid, and associated data release comprising images and visibility datasets covering the whole sky south of declination $+$49$^\circ$. This data release incorporates selective peeling to reduce artefacts around bright sources, as well as accurately modelled primary beam responses. The Stokes I images reach a median noise of 198 $μ$Jy PSF$^{-1}$ with a declination-dependent angular resolution of 8.1 to 47.5 arcsec that fills a niche in the existing ecosystem of large-area astronomical surveys. We also supply Stokes V images after application of a widefield leakage correction, with a median noise of 165 $μ$Jy PSF$^{-1}$. We find the residual leakage of Stokes I into V to be $\lesssim$ 0.9 to 2.4 % over the survey. This initial RACS-mid data release will be complemented by a future release comprising catalogues of the survey region. As with other RACS data releases, data products from this release will be made available through CASDA.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) lack the precise semantics and definitive probabilistic interpretation of probabilistic graphical models (PGMs). In this paper, we propose an innovative solution by constructing infinite tree-structured PGMs that correspond exactly to neural networks. Our research reveals that DNNs, during forward propagation, indeed perform approximations of PGM inference that are precise in this alternative PGM structure. Not only does our research complement existing studies that describe neural networks as kernel machines or infinite-sized Gaussian processes, it also elucidates a more direct approximation that DNNs make to exact inference in PGMs. Potential benefits include improved pedagogy and interpretation of DNNs, and algorithms that can merge the strengths of PGMs and DNNs.

Faraday rotation measures (RMs) have been used for many studies of cosmic magnetism, and in most cases having more RMs is beneficial for those studies. This has lead to development of RM surveys that have produced large catalogs, as well as meta-catalogs collecting RMs from many different publications. However, it has been difficult to take full advantage of all these RMs as the individual catalogs have been published in many different places, and in many different formats. In addition, the polarization spectra used to determine these RMs are rarely published, limiting the ability to re-analyze data as new methods or additional observations become available.
We propose a standard convention for RM catalogs, RMTable2023, and a standard for source-integrated polarized spectra of radio sources, PolSpectra2023. These standards are intended to maximize the value and utility of these data for researchers and to make them easier to access. To demonstrate the use of the RMTable2023 standard, we have produced a consolidated catalog of 55 819 RMs collected from 42 published catalogs.

The measurement is performed for $J/ψ$ ($\mathitΥ$) mesons with a transverse momentum $p_{\mathrm{T}}<10\,(30)\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$ in the rapidity range $2.0<y<4.5$. In this kinematic range, the cross-section of the associated production of prompt $J/ψ$ and $\mathitΥ(1S)$ mesons is measured to be $133 \pm 22 \pm 7 \pm 3 \, \mathrm{pb}$, with a significance of $7.9\,σ$, and that of prompt $J/ψ$ and $\mathitΥ(2S)$ mesons to be $76\pm 21 \pm 4 \pm 7 \, \mathrm{pb}$, with a significance of $4.9\,σ$. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to uncertainties on the used branching fractions. This is the first observation of the associated production of $J/ψ$ and $\mathitΥ(1S)$ in proton-proton collisions. Differential cross-sections are measured as functions of variables that are sensitive to kinematic correlations between the $J/ψ$ and $\mathitΥ(1S)$ mesons. The effective cross-sections of the associated production of prompt $J/ψ$ and $\mathitΥ$ mesons are obtained and found to be compatible with measurements using other particle productions.

The LHCb upgrade represents a major change of the experiment. The detectors have been almost completely renewed to allow running at an instantaneous luminosity five times larger than that of the previous running periods. Readout of all detectors into an all-software trigger is central to the new design, facilitating the reconstruction of events at the maximum LHC interaction rate, and their selection in real time. The experiment's tracking system has been completely upgraded with a new pixel vertex detector, a silicon tracker upstream of the dipole magnet and three scintillating fibre tracking stations downstream of the magnet. The whole photon detection system of the RICH detectors has been renewed and the readout electronics of the calorimeter and muon systems have been fully overhauled. The first stage of the all-software trigger is implemented on a GPU farm. The output of the trigger provides a combination of totally reconstructed physics objects, such as tracks and vertices, ready for final analysis, and of entire events which need further offline reprocessing. This scheme required a complete revision of the computing model and rewriting of the experiment's software.

The $Ξ_{c}^{+}$ production cross-section, as well as the $Ξ_{c}^{+}$ to $Λ_{c}^{+}$ production cross-section ratio, are measured as a function of the transverse momentum and rapidity and compared to latest theory predictions. The forward-backward asymmetry is also measured as a function of the $Ξ_{c}^{+}$ transverse momentum.

Magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) exhibits a range of strongly correlated electronic phases that spontaneously break its underlying symmetries. The microscopic nature of these phases and their residual symmetries stands as a key outstanding puzzle whose resolution promises to shed light on the origin of superconductivity in twisted materials. Here we investigate correlated phases of MATTG using scanning tunneling microscopy and identify striking signatures of interaction-driven spatial symmetry breaking. In low-strain samples, over a filling range of about 2-3 electrons or holes per moiré unit cell, we observe atomic-scale reconstruction of the graphene lattice that accompanies a correlated gap in the tunneling spectrum. This short-scale restructuring appears as a Kekulé supercell -- implying spontaneous inter-valley coherence between electrons -- and persists in a wide range of magnetic fields and temperatures that coincide with the development of the gap. Large-scale maps covering several moiré unit cells further reveal a slow evolution of the Kekulé pattern, indicating that atomic-scale reconstruction coexists with translation symmetry breaking at the much longer moiré scale. We employ auto-correlation and Fourier analyses to extract the intrinsic periodicity of these phases and find that they are consistent with the theoretically proposed incommensurate Kekulé spiral order. Moreover, we find that the wavelength characterizing moiré-scale modulations monotonically decreases with hole doping away from half-filling of the bands and depends only weakly on the magnetic field. Our results provide essential insights into the nature of MATTG correlated phases in the presence of strain and imply that superconductivity emerges from an inter-valley coherent parent state.

We present new results of a room temperature resonant AC haloscope, which searches for axions via photon upconversion. Traditional haloscopes require a strong applied DC magnetic background field surrounding the haloscope cavity resonator, the resonant frequency of which is limited by available bore dimensions. UPLOAD, the UPconversion Low-Noise Oscillator Axion Detection experiment, replaces this DC magnet with a second microwave background resonance within the detector cavity, which upconverts energy from the axion field into the readout mode, accessing axions around the beat frequency of the modes. Furthermore, unlike the DC case, the experiment is sensitive to a newly proposed quantum electromagnetodynamical axion coupling term $g_{aBB}$. Two experimental approaches are outlined - one using frequency metrology, and the other using power detection of a thermal readout mode. The results of the power detection experiment are presented, which allows exclusion of axions of masses between 1.12 $-$ 1.20 $μeV$ above a coupling strength of both $g_{aγγ}$ and $g_{aBB}$ at $3 \times 10^{-6}$ 1/GeV, after a measurement period of 30 days, which is a three order of magnitude improvement over our previous result.

A simultaneous analysis of the $B^+\to K^+\ell^+\ell^-$ and $B^0\to K^{*0}\ell^+\ell^-$ decays is performed to test muon-electron universality in two ranges of the square of the dilepton invariant mass, $q^2$. The measurement uses a sample of beauty meson decays produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9$ $\text{fb}^{-1}$. A sequence of multivariate selections and strict particle identification requirements produce a higher signal purity and a better statistical sensitivity per unit luminosity than previous LHCb lepton universality tests using the same decay modes. Residual backgrounds due to misidentified hadronic decays are studied using data and included in the fit model. Each of the four lepton universality measurements reported is either the first in the given $q^2$ interval or supersedes previous LHCb measurements. The results are compatible with the predictions of the Standard Model.

Two new resonant states with masses of $2.908\pm0.011\pm0.020\,\rm{GeV}$ and widths of $0.136\pm0.023\pm0.011\,\rm{GeV}$ are observed, which decay to $D^+_sπ^+$ and $D^+_sπ^-$ respectively. The former state indicates the first observation of a doubly charged open-charm tetraquark state with minimal quark content $[c\bar{s}u\bar{d}]$, and the latter state is a neutral tetraquark composed of $[c\bar{s}\bar{u}d]$ quarks. Both states are found to have spin-parity $0^+$, and their resonant parameters are consistent with each other, which suggests that they belong to an isospin triplet.

The SKA PAthfinder Radio Continuum Surveys (SPARCS) are providing deep-field imaging of the faint (sub-mJy) extra-galactic radio source populations through a series of reference surveys. One of the key science goals for SPARCS is to characterize the relative contribution of radio emission associated with AGN from star-formation (SF) in these faint radio source populations, using a combination of high sensitivity and high angular resolution imaging over a range of spatial scales (arcsec to mas). To isolate AGN contribution from SF, we hypothesise that there exists a brightness temperature cut-off point separating pure AGN from SF. We present a multi-resolution (10-100 mas) view of the transition between compact AGN and diffuse SF through a deep wide-field EVN+e-MERLIN, multiple phase centre survey of the centre of the Northern SPARCS (SLOAN) reference field at 1.6 GHz. This is the first (and only) VLBI (+e-MERLIN) milliarcsecond angular resolution observation of this field, and of the wider SPARCS reference field programme. Using these high spatial resolution (9 pc - 0.3 kpc at z ~ 1.25) data, 11 milliarcsecond-scale sources are detected from a targeted sample of 52 known radio sources from previous observations with the e-MERLIN, giving a VLBI detection fraction of ~ 21%. At spatial scales of ~ 9 pc, these sources show little to no jet structure whilst at ~ 0.3 kpc one-sided and two-sided radio jets begin to emerge on the same sources, indicating a possible transition from pure AGN emissions to AGN and star-formation systems.

The sum of the $D^0$ and ${\overline D^0}$ production cross-section in $p$Ne collisions in the centre-of-mass rapidity range $y^{\star}\in [-2.29, 0]$ is found to be $σ_{D^{0}}^{y^\star \in [-2.29, 0]} = 48.2 \pm 0.3 \pm 4.5 \,μ\textrm{b/nucleon}$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The $D^0-{\overline D^0}$ production asymmetry is also evaluated and suggests a trend towards negative values at large negative $y^{\star}$. The considered models do not account precisely for all the features observed in the LHCb data, but theoretical predictions including 1$\%$ intrinsic charm and 10$\%$ recombination contributions better describe the data than the other models considered.

An amplitude analysis of the $B^+\to D_s^+ D_s^- K^+$ decay is carried out to study for the first time its intermediate resonant contributions, using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. A near-threshold peaking structure, referred to as $X(3960)$, is observed in the $D_s^+ D_s^-$ invariant-mass spectrum with significance greater than 12 standard deviations. The mass, width and the quantum numbers of the structure are measured to be $3956\pm5\pm10$ MeV, $43\pm13\pm8$ MeV and $J^{PC}=0^{++}$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The properties of the new structure are consistent with recent theoretical predictions for a state composed of $c\bar{c}s\bar{s}$ quarks. Evidence for an additional structure is found around 4140 MeV in the $D_s^+ D_s^-$ invariant mass, which might be caused either by a new resonance with the $0^{++}$ assignment or by a $J/ψφ\leftrightarrow D_s^+ D_s^-$ coupled-channel effect.

Abstract:
The first observation of the $B^0_s\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-}$ decay and the measurement of its branching ratio relative to the $B^0\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-}$ decay are presented. The first observation of the $B^0_s\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-}$ decay and the measurement of its branching ratio relative to the $B^0\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-}$ decay are presented. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $9\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions recorded by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and $13\,\text{TeV}$ between 2011 and 2018. The decay is observed with more than $10$ standard deviations and the time-integrated ratio of branching fractions is determined to be \begin{align*}
\frac{\mathcal{B}(B^0_s\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-})}{\mathcal{B}(B^0\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-})} = 0.269 \pm 0.032 \pm 0.011 \pm 0.008\, , \end{align*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third due to the uncertainty of the fragmentation fraction ratio $f_s/f_d$. The $B^0_s\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-}$ branching fraction is calculated to be \begin{align*}
\mathcal{B}(B^0_s\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-}) = (2.15 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.16)\times 10^{-4} \,, \end{align*} where the fourth uncertainty is due to the $B^0\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-}$branching fraction. These results are calculated using the average $B^0_s$ meson lifetime in simulation. Correction factors are reported for scenarios where either a purely heavy or a purely light $B^0_s$ eigenstate is considered.

Magnetic fields in the ionized medium of the disk and halo of the Milky Way impose Faraday rotation on linearly polarized radio emission. We compare two surveys mapping the Galactic Faraday rotation, one showing the rotation measures of extragalactic sources seen through the Galaxy (from Hutschenreuter et al 2022), and one showing the Faraday depth of the diffuse Galactic synchrotron emission from the Global Magneto-Ionic Medium Survey. Comparing the two data sets in 5deg x 10deg bins shows good agreement at intermediate latitudes, 10 < |b| < 50 deg, and little correlation between them at lower and higher latitudes. Where they agree, both tracers show clear patterns as a function of Galactic longitude: in the Northern Hemisphere a strong sin(2 x longitude) pattern, and in the Southern hemisphere a sin(longitude + pi) pattern. Pulsars with height above or below the plane |z| > 300 pc show similar longitude dependence in their rotation measures. Nearby non-thermal structures show rotation measure shadows as does the Orion-Eridanus superbubble. We describe families of dynamo models that could explain the observed patterns in the two hemispheres. We suggest that a field reversal, known to cross the plane a few hundred pc inside the solar circle, could shift to positive z with increasing Galactic radius to explain the sin(2xlongitude) pattern in the Northern Hemisphere. Correlation shows that rotation measures from extragalactic sources are one to two times the corresponding rotation measure of the diffuse emission, implying Faraday complexity along some lines of sight, especially in the Southern hemisphere.

It is known that haloscopes that search for dark matter axions via the axion-photon anomaly are also sensitive to gravitational radiation through the inverse Gertsenshtein effect. Recently this way of searching for high frequency gravitational waves has gained momentum as it has been shown that the strain sensitivities of such detectors are of the same order of sensitivity to the axion-photon theta angle. Thus, after calculating the sensitivity of a haloscope to an axion signal, we also have calculated the order of magnitude sensitivity to a gravitational wave signal of the same spectral and temporal form. However, it is unlikely that a gravitational wave and an axion signal will be of the same form, since physically the way the signals are generated are completely different. For gravitational wave detection, the spectral strain sensitivity is in units strain per square root Hz, is the natural way to compare the sensitivity of gravitational wave detectors due to its independence on the gravitational wave signal. In this work, we introduce a systematic way to calculate the spectral sensitivity of an axion haloscope, so instrument comparison may be achieved independent of signal assumptions and only depends on the axion to signal transduction sensitivity and noise in the instrument. Thus, the calculation of the spectral sensitivity not only allows the comparison of dissimilar axion detectors independent of signal, but also allows us to compare the order of magnitude gravitational wave sensitivity in terms of spectral strain sensitivity, allowing comparisons to standard gravitational wave detectors based on optical interferometers and resonant-mass technology.

An amplitude model is developed and the resonance fractions as well as two- and three-body decay parameters are reported. The mass and width of the $Λ(2000)$ state are also determined. A significant $Λ^+_c$ polarization is found. A large sensitivity of the $Λ^+_c \to pK^-π^+$ decay to the polarization is seen, making the amplitude model suitable for $Λ^+_c$ polarization measurements in other systems.

Motivated by recent experiments on low-carrier-density superconductors, including twisted multilayer graphene, we study signatures of the BCS to BEC evolution in Andreev reflection spectroscopy. We establish that in a standard quantum point contact geometry, Andreev reflection in a BEC superconductor is unable to mediate a zero-bias conductance beyond $e^2/h$ per lead channel. This bound is shown to result from a duality that links the sub-gap conductance of BCS and BEC superconductors. We then demonstrate that sharp signatures of BEC superconductivity, including perfect Andreev reflection, can be recovered by tunneling through a suitably designed potential well. We propose various tunneling spectroscopy setups to experimentally probe this recovery.

Nanophotonic platforms in theory uniquely enable < femtomoles of chiral biological and pharmaceutical molecules to be detected, through the highly localised changes in the chiral asymmetries of the near-fields that they induce. However, current chiral nanophotonic based strategies are intrinsically limited because they rely on far-field optical measurements that are sensitive to a much larger near-field volume, than that influenced by the chiral molecules. Consequently, they depend on detecting small changes in far-field optical response restricting detection sensitivities. Here we exploit an intriguing phenomenon, plasmonic circularly polarised luminescence (PCPL), which is an incisive local probe of near-field chirality. This allows chiral detection of monolayer quantities of a de novo designed peptide, which is not achieved with a far-field response. Our work demonstrates that by leveraging the capabilities of nanophotonic platforms with the near-field sensitivity of PCPL, optimal biomolecular detection performance can be achieved, opening new avenues for nanometrology.

In the presence of a large perpendicular electric field, Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) features several broken-symmetry metallic phases as well as magnetic-field-induced superconductivity. The superconducting state is quite fragile, however, appearing only in a narrow window of density and with a maximum critical temperature $T_c\approx30$~mK. Here, we show that placing monolayer tungsten diselenide (WSe$_{2}$) on BLG promotes Cooper pairing to an extraordinary degree: superconductivity appears at zero magnetic field, exhibits an order of magnitude enhancement in $T_c$, and occurs over a density range that is wider by a factor of eight. By mapping quantum oscillations in BLG-WSe$_2$ as a function of electric field and doping, we establish that superconductivity emerges throughout a region whose normal state is polarized, with two out of four spin-valley flavours predominantly populated. In-plane magnetic field measurements further reveal a striking dependence of the critical field on doping, with the Chandrasekhar-Clogston (Pauli) limit roughly obeyed on one end of the superconducting dome yet sharply violated on the other. Moreover, the superconductivity arises only for perpendicular electric fields that push BLG hole wavefunctions towards WSe$_2$ -- suggesting that proximity-induced (Ising) spin-orbit coupling plays a key role in enhancing the pairing. Our results pave the way for engineering robust, highly tunable, and ultra-clean graphene-based superconductors.

Evidence at the 3.4$σ$ level is found for an increase of the ratio of $B^{0}_{s}$ to $B^{0}$ cross-sections with multiplicity at transverse momenta below 6 GeV/$c$, with no significant multiplicity dependence at higher transverse momentum. Comparison with data from $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions implies that the density of the hadronic medium may affect the production rates of $B$ mesons. This is qualitatively consistent with the emergence of quark coalescence as an additional hadronization mechanism in high-multiplicity collisions.

Upper limits are presented as a function of the $\itΞ_{bc}^{+}$ mass and lifetime.

The coefficients of the five leading terms in the angular distribution are determined as a function of the dimuon transverse momentum and rapidity. The results are compared to various theoretical predictions of the $Z$-boson production mechanism and can also be used to probe transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions within the proton.

These observables give access to the charm mixing parameters $y_{CP}^{ππ} - y_{CP}^{Kπ}$ and $y_{CP}^{KK} - y_{CP}^{Kπ}$, and are measured as $y_{CP}^{ππ} - y_{CP}^{Kπ} = (6.57 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.16) \times 10^{-3}$, $y_{CP}^{KK} - y_{CP}^{Kπ} = (7.08 \pm 0.30 \pm 0.14) \times 10^{-3}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The combination of the two measurements is $y_{CP} - y_{CP}^{Kπ} = (6.96 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{-3}$, which is four times more precise than the previous world average.

High quality low-frequency radio surveys have the promise of advancing our understanding of many important topics in astrophysics, including the life cycle of active galactic nuclei (AGN), particle acceleration processes in jets, the history of star formation, and exoplanet magnetospheres. Currently leading low-frequency surveys reach an angular resolution of a few arcseconds. However, this resolution is not yet sufficient to study the more compact and distant sources in detail. Sub-arcsecond resolution is therefore the next milestone in advancing these fields. The biggest challenge at low radio frequencies is the ionosphere. If not adequately corrected for, ionospheric seeing blurs the images to arcsecond or even arcminute scales. Additionally, the required image size to map the degree-scale field of view of low-frequency radio telescopes at this resolution is far greater than what typical soft- and hardware is currently capable of handling. Here we present for the first time (to the best of our knowledge) widefield sub-arcsecond imaging at low radio frequencies. We derive ionospheric corrections in a few dozen individual directions and apply those during imaging efficiently using a recently developed imaging algorithm (arXiv:1407.1943, arXiv:1909.07226). We demonstrate our method by applying it to an eight hour observation of the International LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) Telescope (ILT) (arXiv:1305.3550). Doing so we have made a sensitive $7.4\ \mathrm{deg}^2$ $144\ \mathrm{MHz}$ map at a resolution of $0.3''$ reaching $25\ μ\mathrm{Jy\ beam}^{-1}$ near the phase centre. The estimated $250,000$ core hours used to produce this image, fit comfortably in the budget of available computing facilities. This result will enable future mapping of the entire northern low-frequency sky at sub-arcsecond resolution.

Using the measured $B^0_s\toφμ^+μ^-$ branching fraction and assuming a phase-space model, the absolute branching fraction of the decay $B^0\to φμ^+ μ^-$ in the full $q^2$ range is determined to be less than $3.2 \times 10^{-9}$ at a 90$\%$ credibility level.

The first observation of the semileptonic $b$-baryon decay $ Λ_b^0 \rightarrow Λ_c^+ τ^-\overlineν_τ$, with a significance of $6.1\,σ$, is reported using a data sample corresponding to 3 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV at the LHC. The $τ^-$ lepton is reconstructed in the hadronic decay to three charged pions. The branching fraction ${\mathcal{B}}(Λ_b^0 \rightarrow Λ_c^+τ^-\overlineν_τ) = (1.50 \pm 0.16\pm 0.25\pm 0.23)\%$ is obtained, where uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from the external branching fraction of the normalisation channel $Λ_b^0\rightarrow Λ_c^+π^-π^+π^-$. The ratio of semileptonic branching fractions ${\mathcal{R}}( Λ_c^+)\equiv {\mathcal{B}}( Λ_b^0 \rightarrow Λ_c^+ τ^-\overlineν_τ)/{\mathcal{B}}( Λ_b^0 \rightarrow Λ_c^+ μ^-\overlineν_μ)$ is derived to be $0.242 \pm 0.026 \pm 0.040\pm 0.059$, where the external branching fraction uncertainty from the channel $Λ_b^0\rightarrow Λ_c^+μ^-\overlineν_μ$ contributes to the last term. This result is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction.

We present a study of a luminous, z=0.15, type-2 quasar (log [L([OIII])/(erg/s)]=42.8) from the Quasar Feedback Survey. It is classified as 'radio-quiet' (log [L(1.4 GHz)/(W/Hz)]=23.8); however, radio imaging reveals ~1 kpc low-power jets (log [Pjet/(erg/s)]=44) inclined into the plane of the galaxy disk. We combine MUSE and ALMA observations to map stellar kinematics and ionised and molecular gas properties. The jets are seen to drive galaxy-wide bi-conical turbulent outflows, reaching W80 = 1000-1300 km/s, in the ionised phase (traced via optical emission-lines), which also have increased electron densities compared to the quiescent gas. The turbulent gas is driven perpendicular to the jet axis and is escaping along the galaxy minor axis, reaching 7.5 kpc on both sides. Traced via CO(3-2) emission, the turbulent material in molecular gas phase is one-third as spatially extended and has 3 times lower velocity-dispersion as compared to ionised gas. The jets are seen to be strongly interacting with the interstellar medium (ISM) through enhanced ionised emission and disturbed/depleted molecular gas at the jet termini. We see further evidence for jet-induced feedback through significantly higher stellar velocity-dispersion aligned, and co-spatial with, the jet axis (<5 deg). We discuss possible negative and positive feedback scenarios arising due to the interaction of the low-power jets with the ISM in the context of recent jet-ISM interaction simulations, which qualitatively agree with our observations. We discuss how jet-induced feedback could be an important feedback mechanism even in bolometrically luminous 'radio-quiet' quasars.

The first observations of $B^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{+}π^{-}$ and $B_s^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{-}π^{+}$ decays are presented, and their branching fractions relative to that of the $B^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}π^{+}π^{-}$ decay are reported. These modes can potentially be used to investigate the spectroscopy of charm and charm-strange resonances and to determine the angle $γ$ of the CKM unitarity triangle. It is also important to understand them as a source of potential background in determinations of $γ$ from $B^{+}\rightarrow DK^{+}$ and $B^{0}\rightarrow DK^{+}π^{-}$ decays. The analysis is based on a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4 ~\rm{fb}^{-1}$ of proton--proton collision data at $13 ~\rm{TeV}$ centre-of-mass energy recorded with the LHCb detector. The $\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}$ mesons are fully reconstructed in the $\overline{D}^{0}π^{0}$ and $\overline{D}^{0}γ$ channels, with the $\overline{D}^{0} \rightarrow K^{+}π^{-}$ decay. A novel weighting method is used to subtract background while simultaneously applying an event-by-event efficiency correction to account for resonant structures in the decays.
