The cluster structure of the neutron-rich isotope $^{10}$Be has been probed via the $(p,pα)$ reaction at 150 MeV/nucleon in inverse kinematics and in quasifree conditions. The populated states of $^{6}$He residues were investigated through missing mass spectroscopy. The triple differential cross-section for the ground-state transition was extracted for quasifree angle pairs ($θ_{p}$, $θ_α$) and compared to distorted-wave impulse approximation reaction calculations performed in a microscopic framework using successively the Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Röpke product wave-function and the wave-function deduced from Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics calculations. The remarkable agreement between calculated and measured cross-sections in both shape and magnitude validates the molecular structure description of the $^{10}$Be ground-state, configured as an $α$-$α$ core with two valence neutrons occupying $π$-type molecular orbitals.

This work describes a silicon tracker system developed for experiments with proton-rich radioactive ion beams at the SAMURAI superconducting spectrometer of RIBF at RIKEN. The system is designed for accurate angular reconstruction and atomic number identification of relativistic heavy ions and protons which are simultaneously produced in reactions motivated by studies of proton capture reactions of interest for nuclear astrophysics. The technical characteristics of the tracking array are described in detail as are its performance in two pilot experiments. The physics justification for such a system is also presented.

We report on the first proton-induced single proton- and neutron-removal reactions from the neutron-deficient $^{14}$O nucleus with large Fermi-surface asymmetry $S_n-S_p$ = 18.6 MeV at $\sim$100 MeV/nucleon, a widely used energy regime for rare-isotope studies. The measured inclusive cross sections and parallel momentum distributions of the $^{13}$N and $^{13}$O residues are compared to the state-of-the-art reaction models, with nuclear structure inputs from many-body shell-model calculations. Our results provide the first quantitative contributions of multiple reaction mechanisms including the quasifree knockout, inelastic scattering and nucleon transfer processes. It is shown that the inelastic scattering and nucleon transfer, usually neglected at such energy regime, contribute about 50% and 30% to the loosely bound proton and deeply bound neutron removal, respectively. These multiple reaction mechanisms should be considered in analyses of inclusive one-nucleon removal cross sections measured at intermediate energies for quantitative investigation of single-particle strengths and correlations in atomic nuclei.

We use an underground counting lab with an extremely low background to perform an activity measurement for the $^{12}$C+$^{13}$C system with energies down to $E\rm_{c.m.}$=2.323 MeV, at which the $^{12}$C($^{13}$C,$p$)$^{24}$Na cross section is found to be 0.22(7) nb. The $^{12}$C+$^{13}$C fusion cross section is derived with a statistical model calibrated using experimental data. Our new result of the $^{12}$C+$^{13}$C fusion cross section is the first decisive evidence in the carbon isotope systems which rules out the existence of the astrophysical S-factor maximum predicted by the phenomenological hindrance model, while confirming the rising trend of the S-factor towards lower energies predicted by other models, such as CC-M3Y+Rep, DC-TDHF, KNS, SPP and ESW. After normalizing the model predictions with our data, a more reliable upper limit is established for the $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C fusion cross sections at stellar energies.

We present a facility for direct measurements at low and very low energies typical for nuclear astrophysics (NA). The facility consists of a small and robust tandem accelerator where irradiations are made, and an ultra-low background laboratory located in a salt mine where very low radio-activities can be measured. Both belong to Horia Hulubei National Institute for Physics and Nuclear Engineering (IFIN-HH) but are situated 120 km apart. Their performances are shown using a few cases where they are used. We argue that this facility is competitive for the study of nuclear reactions induced by alpha particles and by light ions at energies close or down into the Gamow windows. A good case study was the 13C+12C fusion reaction, where the proton evaporation channel leads to an activity with T1/2 = 15 h, appropriate for samples' transfer to the salt mine. Measurements were done using the thick target method down into the Gamow window for energies from Ecm=2.2 MeV, which is the lowest energy ever reached for this reaction, up to 5.3 MeV, using 13C beams from the 3 MV tandetron. The activation method allowed us to determine a cross section of the order of 100 pb. Reactions induced by alphas were also measured. Proton induced resonant reactions were used to calibrate the accelerator terminal voltage. Some results of the experiemnts characterizing the assembly are sown and discussed.

Obtaining high performance in IO intensive applications requires systems that support reliable fast transfer, data replication, and caching. In this paper we present an architecture designed for supporting IO intensive applications in MedioGRID, a system for real-time processing of satellite images, operating in a Grid environment. The solution ensures that applications which are processing geographical data have uniform access to data and is based on continuous monitoring of the data transfers using MonALISA and its extensions. The MedioGRID architecture is also built on Globus, Condor and PBS and based on this middleware we aim to extract information about the running systems. The results obtained in testing MedioGRID system for large data transfers show that monitoring system provides a very good view of system evolution.
