The method of microcontact spectroscopy is used to study alloys with magnetic impurities CuMn and CuFe in the range of concentrations 0.01-1 at.%. Minima or maxima (so-called zero-bias anomalies) were observed in the microcontact spectra of these alloys at voltages ~ 1 mV. The Lande g-factor for the Mn impurity in a Cu matrix was determined from the splitting of the minimum of the zero-bias anomaly in a magnetic field. The quantitative calculations carried out agree well with theory and permit determining both the important geometric contact parameter <K> i.e., the averaged geometric form factor, and the characteristics of the alloy itself, for example, J/E_F, i.e., the ratio of the magnitude of the exchange interaction energy between an electron and the magnetic impurity to the Fermi energy, from the microcontact spectra.

For metallic point contacts with Be and Al the magnetoquantum oscillations in the contact resistance have been investigated as a function of the applied voltage over the contact. For one set of point contacts the oscillation amplitude is found to vary nonmonotonously with the applied voltage with similarities to the point-contact spectrum of the electron-phonon interaction. The other part of the investigated point contacts shows a decrease of the oscillation amplitude with increasing bias voltage. For the understanding of the voltage dependence of the amplitude of the point-contact magnetoresistance oscillations the influence of nonequilibrium phonons generated by the ballistically injected electrons will be discussed.

The observed effect has a high intensity (right up to a complete suppression or recovery of ${{I}_{exc}}$) and is not accompanied by a noticeable variation of the energy gap or the critical temperature in the point contact region. It is also established that the states with intermediate values of $I_{exc}$ are stable for zero bias voltages across the point contacts, at least up to $110 \ K$. It is assumed that the variation of ${{I}_{exc}}$ and the corresponding modification of IVC are due to the oxygen migration processes induced by the electric field and current, resulting in a local variation of the superconducting parameters in the point-contact region.

The electron-quasiparticle interaction (EQI) spectral function has been measured for $\rm DyNi_2B_2C$ in the normal state at low temperatures by means of point-contact spectroscopy (PCS). A low-frequency peak is found around $eV\sim 5\ meV$. It becomes measurable at $T_m^*\simeq 15\ K$ and grows in intensity with constant width as the temperature is lowered. We argue that this peak arises from the strong interaction of conduction electron with coupled crystal-electric-field-phonon excitations whose branches cross at low energy. The comparison with PC spectra for $\rm HoNi_2B_2C$ suggests that a similar peak also exists for this compound. The magnitude of the point-contact EQI parameter $λ_{PC}$ for $\rm DyNi_2B_2C$ is estimated. $©$2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The superconducting energy gap in $\rm DyNi_2B_2C$ has been investigated using a point-contact technique based on the Andreev reflection from a normal (N)-superconductor (S) boundary, where N is Ag. The observed differential resistance $dV/dI$ is well described by the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) theory based on the BSC density of states with zero broadening parameter. Typically, the intensity of the gap structure amounts to several percentage of the normal state resistance, which is an order of magnitude less than predicted by the theory. For $\rm DyNi_2B_2C$ with $T_c<T_N$ (the Neel temperature), we found gap values satisfying the ratio of $2Δ_0/k_BT_c=3.63\pm 0.05$ similar to other superconducting nickel-borocarbides, both nonmagnetic and magnetic with $T_c\geq T_N$. The superconducting gap nonlinearity is superimposed on the antiferromagnetic structure in $dV/dI(V)$ which is suppressed at the magnetic field of the order of 3T applied nominally in the $ab$-plane and temperature $\geq 11~K$. The observed superconducting properties depend on the exact composition and structure at the surface of the crystal.

The increase of width of the Kondo resonance and enhanced ratio of Kondo-peak intensity to electron-phonon scattering intensity is observed for contacts with sizes smaller than 10 $nm$. From the comparison of electron-phonon scattering intensity for the pressure-type contacts, which correspond to the clean orifice model, we conclude that the size effect is observed in \emph{clean} contacts with the shape of a \emph{channel} (nanowire).

Electron-phonon interaction in superconducting transition metals (Ta, Mo, W) is investigated by the method of point-contact spectroscopy. The spectra obtained are compared with model densities of the phonon states $F(ω)$ computed from experiments on neutron scattering, and with the tunnel electron-phonon interaction function $g(ω)$ for Ta. Close agreement between the appropriate spectra is obtained for Ta and Mo, while a significant discrepancy is observed for W, which is the appearance of a blurred maximum instead of the two expected separated peaks on the point-contact spectra. The absolute intensities of a number of point-contact spectra $G(eV)$ and electron-phonon coupling constants $λ$ are calculated. For all three metals the values obtained turned out to be considerably below those expected. The possible reasons for this disagreement are discussed.

Electrical characteristics are measured in submicron YBaCuO-normal metal point contacts with a direct conductivity. In a microwave field, such contacts reveal a nonstationary Josephson effect which can occur in the current concentration region not only in the initial weak bonds in YBaCuO but also the weak bonds of a phase-slip center type, formed as a result of a significant current injection (as well as a microwave field). The existence of internal weak bonds in the HTS-electrode contact area produces a narrow minimum in the differential resistance near zero biases. Moreover, the effect of magnetic flux quantization is observed for separate granules in magnetic fields stronger than the first critical field.

Electrical characteristics $(I(eV), dV/dI(eV), d^{2}V/dI^{2}(eV))$ are studied comprehensively for pressed submicron point contacts between fresh fractures of LaSrCuO ceramic pellets and a normal metal (Cu). Point contacts (PC) with the direct-type conductivity are investigated, which are characterized by a considerable excess current due to Andreev reflection of quasiparticles at an NS boundary of high transparency. Basic requirements for point contacts suitable for PC measurements are formulated. The models of investigated point contacts permitting the interpretation of the observed characteristics are considered. The results of measurement of the energy gap reveal that LaSrCuO is a superconductor with a strong coupling since the maximum value of the ratio $2Δ/kT\simeq 11$. It is found that superconducting properties may vary appreciably over distances of several tens of angstroms, resulting in some cases in the simultaneous emergence of two gaps corresponding to two critical temperatures. The $dV/dI(eV)$ and $d^{2}V/dI^{2}(eV)$ curves display some high-intensity singularities whose position on the eV-axis is practically independent of temperature and correlates with the phonon spectrum obtained in neutron scattering experiments. This points to a strong electron-phonon interaction in LaSrCuO.

Superconducting (SC) superlattices (SL) of the epitaxial semiconductor $PbTe-PbS$/(001) $KCl$ with two-dimensional ordered misfit dislocation (MD) networks across heteroboundaries (HB) are studied, and the obtained results are compared with the corresponding data for $YBaCuO$. An analysis of the fluctuational region showed that the pairing of electrons in SL takes place at the sites of dislocation networks. In the region of SC fluctuations, the IVC derivatives of point-contacts (PC) based on SL and HTS display a metal-insulator transition associated with delocalization of carriers from the vicinity of the structural elements responsible for the emergence of SC. The critical current density in a superlattice is determined, and a mechanism is proposed for formation of excess current on the IVC of PC based on SL and HTS. The values of the energy gap $Δ_0$ at low temperatures in units of $kT_c$ are found to be anomalously large for SL and HTS. For anisotropic three-dimensional SL with a strong bond between two-dimensional SC planes, two gaps emerge from the MD. For quasi-two-dimensional SL with a weak bond between two-dimensional SC planes, the $Δ(T)$ dependence is nonmonotonic, and the fluctuation region for these SL and for HTS reveals a gap that is practically independent of temperature. The IVC derivatives of a $Cu$-SL PC reveal an oscillating structure which is restricted to an energy of $90\ meV$ and is apparently associated with the electron-phonon interaction. It is assumed that there is a similarity between the SC mechanisms in SL and HTS. pacs 73.40.Jn, 74.25.Kc, 74.45.+c, 74.50.+r., 73.40.-c, 74.78.-w, 74.78.Fk, 74.20.Mn, 74.40.+k.-n, 74.45.+c, 74.62.Dn, 74.70.Ad

The size of the gap and its dependence on the temperature and field are determined by the position of the point contact inside the superlattice. \pacs{73.40.Jn, 74.25.Kc, 74.45.+c, 74.50.+r., 73.40.-c, 74.78.-w, 74.78.Fk, 74.20.Mn, 74.40.+k.-n, 74.45.+c, 74.62.Dn, 74.70.Ad

The volt-ampere curves and their second derivatives were studied for niobium point contacts at low temperatures in the voltage range corresponding to the characteristic phonon energies. It was found that while for the dirty contacts in the normal state no PC spectra of phonons could be detected, in the superconducting state there were singularities in the I-V curves corresponding to maxima either in the first or in the second derivatives. The singularities observed were due to the energy dependence of the excess current. We suppose that the origin of these singularities is due to the inelastic transitions of electrons between chemical potentials of Cooper pairs at both sides of the contact, which differ in energy by $eV$. These transitions are possible if $ξ\left(0 \right)\gtrsim d \sim{Λ_{\varepsilon}}$ ($ξ(0)$ being the coherence length, $d$, the contact diameter, ${Λ_{\varepsilon}}={{({{l}_{i}}\cdot {{l}_{\varepsilon}})}^{1/2}}$, where ${{l}_{i}}$ and ${{l}_{\varepsilon}}$ being the elastic and inelastic electron mean free paths, respectively).

The nonlinearities of current-voltage characteristics (IVC) of superconducting niobium point contacts for voltages of the order of the characteristic phonon frequencies are investigated. It is shown that in limiting by dirty contacts ${{l}_{1}}\ll d$ , (${{l}_{1}}$ is the momentum mean-free path of electrons), features are observed on the IVC corresponding to maxima in the first or second derivatives and are situated at energies close to the characteristic phonon energies. These features are due to the energy dependence of the excess current, since the nonlinearity of the IVC in the normal state is several times smaller in absolute magnitude, and its second derivative is monotonic. For a contact diameter $d$ of the order of several tens of angstroms (the contact resistance is of the order of 100 $Ω$), the thermal effects can be neglected. It is assumed that in the region of the constriction, the characteristic lengths of the system satisfy the relation $ξ\gtrsim d>{{Λ}_{\varepsilon }}$ (${{Λ}_{\varepsilon }}$ is the diffusion length for energy relaxation of the electrons, $ξ$ is the coherence length) which makes possible inelastic transitions of electrons between pair chemical potentials differing in energy by an account $eV$ ($V$ is the voltage drop across the contact)

The method of microcontact spectroscopy in the superconducting state was used to investigate weak nonlinearities of the current-voltage characteristics of point contacts made of $N{{b}_{3}}Sn$ single crystals. The nature of the spectrum of the electron-phonon interaction was found to vary considerably from contact to contact, indicating considerable deviations of the composition of the surface of $N{{b}_{3}}Sn$ from stoichiometry. A correlation was established between the nature of the spectrum and the magnitude of the gap singularities of the current-voltage characteristics. In the case of "dirty" high-resistance contacts with strong gap singularities the microcontact spectra were reasonably reproducible, which made it possible to relate them sufficiently closely to the microcontact function of the electron-phonon interaction in the bulk material. It was found that microcontact spectroscopy of this interaction was possible in the superconducting state not only in dirty $S-c-S$ contacts, but also in dirty $S-c-N$ contacts.

The current-voltage characteristics (IVC) of $S-c-N$ point contacts of superconductors with a small coherence length ${ξ_{0}}$ reveal steps with discrete values of the differential resistance. This peculiarity is associated with a transition of the contact region of the superconductor to a spatially inhomogeneous state under the influence of the current injection of nonequilibrium quasiparticles penetrating the superconductor to a depth ${{l}_{E}}$ . The role of the relaxation of the disbalance between the occupancies of electron- and hole-like branches of the quasiparticle spectrum is manifested in the displacement of the position of the singularities on the IVC towards higher energies upon an increase in the magnetic field and/or temperature. This effect was observed in superconductors with different ratios of the contact diameter $d$ and ${ξ_{0}}$ or ${{l}_{E}}$ in the series $Ta\ (d\ll {ξ_{0}},\ {{l}_{E}})\to NbS{{e}_{2}}$, $N{{b}_{3}}Sn\ (d\gtrsim {ξ_{0}},\ {{l}_{E}})\to YB{{a}_{1.25}}S{{r}_{0.75}}C{{u}_{3}}{{O}_{7-δ}}(d\gg {ξ_{0}},\ {{l}_{E}})$. Apparently, a jumplike displacement of the boundary between regions with suppressed and equilibrium values of the energy gap near the contact is responsible for the oscillations observed on the IVC of point contacts between single crystals of high- temperature superconductors (HTS) and a normal metal. The resistance-periodic step-like structure of the IVC allows us to estimate the penetration depth ${{l}_{E}}$ of the electric field in $NbS{{e}_{2}}$ and $YBaSrCuO$.

The point-contact spectra of tantalum in the superconducting state, with $Ta$, $Cu$, and $Au$ counterelectrodes, have been studied. We discovered some new distinctive features, whose position on the $eV$ axis is determined by the critical power required for the injection of nonequilibriumquasiparticles. At this level of power the band gap $Δ$ decreases abruptly in the vicinity of the contact. A correction to the point-contact spectrum, with the sign opposite to that of the usual correction, arises in the region of phonon energies. The maxima in the $Ta$ spectrum become sharper and their position on the energy axis becomes stabilized near the values $e{{V}_{ph}}=7.0$, 11.3, 15.5, and 18 $meV$, which correspond to low phonon group velocities $\partial ω/\partial q\simeq 0$ in $Ta$. This is confirmed by the existence of corresponding flattenings on the dispersion relations $ω(q)$ of lattice vibrations. Slow phonons are created near the $N-S$ interface in quasiparticle recombination and relaxation processes and cause a decrease in $Δ$ and an increase in the differential resistance in the vicinity of $e{{V}_{ph}}$. An excess quasiparticle charge is accumulated in the region of the contact, producing a correction to the resistance, which decreases as $eV$, $T$, and $H$ increase. These mechanisms are particularly effective in dirty contacts, thus permitting phonon spectroscopy in the superconducting state even when the current flow occurs in a nearly thermal mode.

Tantalum is studied by the method of point-contact (PC) spectroscopy: the parameter ${{λ}_{pc}}$ and the absolute intensity of the PC EPI function are determined, and the form of the EPI function is determined more accurately. Both homocontacts $Ta-Ta$ and heterocontacts $Ta-Cu$ and $Ta-Au$ were studied. It was found that the contributions of copper and gold to the spectrum of the heterocontact are not noticeable, though the forms of the PC spectra of $Ta$ in homo- and heterocontacts are different. The intensities of the spectra of $Ta-Ta$ homocontacts and $Ta-Cu$ heterocontacts turned out to be close to one another. Simple expressions, enabling numerical calculations of the PC characteristics for geometrically symmetric heterocontacts in the approximation of a spherical Fermi surface, are derived, based on the theory. It is shown that the use of the free-electron approximation in the numerical estimates leads to an error. It is proposed that the effective mass approximation be used for such estimates.

An asymmetry as a function of the direction of current flow is observed in the current-voltage characteristic (CVC) and its first and second derivatives for point heterocontacts between pure metals {Cu, Ni, Fe) as well as between these metals and dilute alloys (CuFe, CuMn). It is shown that the observed asymmetry is caused by thermoelectrical phenomena (Seebeck, Peltier, and Thompson effects), observed when the temperature inside the contact differs from the temperature of the bath. In the low energy range (less than or of the order of the Debye energy) the asymmetry of the CVC is affected mainly by the Seebeck effect, while at high energies and for larger contacts (lower resistance) the contributions of all noted effects are of the same order of magnitude. A technique is proposed for determining the temperature of a heterocontact by measuring the CVC in two polarities. It is established that in the intermediate (between the diffusion and ballistic) state of flight of the electrons through the constriction the temperature of the heterocontact increases linearly with the voltage on it, and all the more rapidly the larger the contact and the more impurity in it.

We present a study of the influence of an external magnetic field H and an electric current I on the spin-valve (SV) effect between a ferromagnetic thin film (F) and a sharp tip of a nonmagnetic metal (N). To explain our observations, we propose a model of a local surface SV which is formed in such a N/F contact. In this model, a ferromagnetic cluster at the N/F interface plays the role of the free layer in this SV. This cluster exhibits a larger coercive field than the bulk of the ferromagnetic film, presumably due to its nanoscale nature. Finally, we construct a magnetic state diagram of the surface SV as a function of I and H.

Point-contact (PC) investigations on the title compound in the normal and superconducting (SC) state (Tc=10,6 K) are presented. The temperature dependence of the SC gap of TmNi2B2C determined from Andreev-reflection (AR) spectra using the standard single-gap approximation (SGA) deviates from the BCS behavior in displaying a maximum at about Tc/2. A refined analysis within the two-gap approximation provides evidence for the presence of a second gap twice as large as the main gap (the first one), while the latter is close to that within the SGA. This way, TmNi2B2C expands the number of nickel borocarbide superconductors which exhibit a clear multiband character. Additionally, for the first time "reentrant" features were found in the AR spectra for some PCs measured in a magnetic field. The PC spectroscopy of the electron-boson interaction in TmNi2B2C in the normal state reveals a pronounced phonon maximum at 9.5meV and a more smeared one around 15 meV, while at higher energies the PC spectra are almost featureless. Additionally, the most intense peak slightly above 3meV observed in the PC spectra of TmNi2B2C is presumably caused by crystalline-electric-field (CEF) excitations. The peak near 1meV detected for some PC spectra is connected with a modification of the CEF probably due to boron or carbon vacancies, allowing to probe the local stoichiometry by PC spectroscopy.

At the same time, an expected second larger gap feature was difficult to resolve distinctly on the AR spectra making determination reliability of the second gap detection questionable. We propose to use a point contact between a ferromagnetic and a normal metal in the presence of a magnetic field for creating a large inverted spin-population of hot electrons in the contact core. The key point of the proposal is that when these hot electrons relax by flipping their spin, microwave photons are emitted, with a frequency tunable by the applied magnetic field. While point contacts is an established technology their use as a photon source is a new and potentially very useful application. We show that this photon emission process can be detected by means of transport spectroscopy and demonstrate stimulated emission of radiation in the 10-100 GHz range for a model point contact system using a minority-spin ferromagnetic injector. These results can potentially lead to new types of lasers based on spin injection in metals.

The point-contact (PC) spectra of the Andreev reflection dV/dI curves of the superconducting rare-earth nickel borocarbide ErNi2B2C (Tc=11 K) have been analyzed in the "one-gap" and "two-gap" approximations using the generalized Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (GBTK) model and the Beloborod'ko (BB) model allowing for the pair-breaking effect of magnetic impurities. Experimental and calculated curves have been compared not only in shape, but in magnitude as well, which provide more reliable data for determining the temperature dependence of the energy gap (or superconducting order parameter) Δ(T). The anisotropic effect of antiferromagnetic ordering at T_N =6 K on the superconducting gap/order parameter has been determined: as the temperature is lowered, Δ(T) decreases by 25% in the c-direction and only by 4% in the ab-plane. It is found that the pair-breaking parameter increases in the vicinity of the magnetic transitions, the increase being more pronounced in the c-direction. The efficiency of the models was tested for providing Δ(T) data for ErNi2B2C from Andreev reflection spectra.

Hysteretic magneto-resistance of point contacts formed between non-magnetic tips and single ferromagnetic films exchange-pinned by antiferromagnetic films is investigated. The analysis of the measured current driven and field driven hysteresis agrees with the recently proposed model of the surface spin-valve, where the spin orientation at the interface can be different from that in the bulk of the film. The switching in magneto-resistance at low fields is observed to depend significantly on the direction of the exchange pinning, which allows identifying this transition as a reversal of interior spins of the pinned ferromagnetic films. The switching at higher fields is thus due to a spin reversal in the point contact core, at the top surface of the ferromagnet, and does not exhibit any clear field offset when the exchange-pinning direction or the magnetic field direction is varied. This magnitude of the switching field of the surface spins varies substantially from contact to contact and sometimes from sweep to sweep, which suggests that the surface coercivity can change under very high current densities and/or due to the particular microstructure of the point contact. In contrast, no changes in the effect of the exchange biasing on the interior spins are observed at high currents, possibly due to the rapid drop in the current density away from nanometer sized point contact cores.

Point contacts between normal and ferromagnetic metals are investigated using magneto-resistance and transport spectroscopy measurements combined with micromagnetic simulations. Pronounced hysteresis in the point-contact resistance versus both bias current and external magnetic field are observed. It is found that such hysteretic resistance can exhibit, in addition to bi-stable resistance states found in ordinary spin valves, tri-stable resistance states with a middle resistance level. We interpret these observation in terms of surface spin-valve and spin-vortex states, originating from a substantially modified spin structure at the ferromagnetic interface in contact core. We argue that these surface spin states, subject to a weakened exchange interaction, dominate the effects of spin transfer torques on the nanometer scale.

Point-contacts (PC) offer a simple way to create high current densities, 10^9 A/cm^2 and beyond, without substantial Joule heating. We have shown recently (Nano Letters, 7 (2007) 927) that conductivity of nanosized PCs between a normal and ferromagnetic metals exhibits bi-stable hysteretic states versus both bias current and external magnetic field - the effect typical for spin-valve structures. Here we report that apart from the bi-stable state a third intermediate-resistance state is occasionally observed. We interpret this state as due to a spin-vortex in the PC, nucleated either by Oersted field of the bias current and/or by the circular geometry of PC. The observed three-level-states in the PC conductivity testify that the interface spins are both weakly coupled to the spins in the bulk and have depressed exchange interaction within the surface layer.

An general survey of the superconducting (SC) gap study in the title compounds by point-contact (PC) spectroscopy is presented. The SC gap was determined from dV/dI of PCs employing the well-known theory of conductivity for normal metal-superconductor PCs accounting Andreev reflection. The theory was modified by including pair-breaking effects considering the presence of magnetic rare-earth ions. A possible multiband structure of these compounds was also taken into account. The PC study of the gap in the Er-compound (TN=6K<Tc=11K) gives =evidence for the presence of two SC gaps. Additionally, a distinct decrease of both gaps is revealed for R = Er in the antiferromagnetic (AF) state. For R = Tm (TN=1.5K<Tc=10.5K) a decrease of the SC gap is observed below 4-5K, while for R = Dy (TN=10.5K>Tc=6.5K) the SC gap has a BCS-like dependence in the AF state. The SC gap for R = Ho (TN=5.2K<Tc=8.5K) exhibits below T*=5.6K a single-band BCS-like dependence vanishing above T*, where a specific magnetic order occurs. The difference in the SC gap behavior in the title compounds is attributed to different AF ordering.

Excitation of magnons or spin-waves driven by nominally unpolarized transport currents in point contacts of normal and ferromagnetic metals is probed by irradiating the contacts with microwaves. Two characteristic dynamic effects are observed: a rectification of off-resonance microwave current by spin-wave nonlinearities in the point contact conductance, and a resonant stimulation of spin-wave modes in the nano-contact core by the microwave field. These observations provide a direct evidence that the magnetoconductance effects observed are due to GHz spin dynamics at the ferromagnetic interface driven by the spin transfer torque effect of the transport current.

Observed retention of the Andreev reflection minima in dV/dI up to Tc directly points to unusual superconducting order parameter (OP) vanishing at Tc. Temperature dependence of OP was obtained from dV/dI using recent theory of Andreev reflection including pair-breaking effect. For the first time existence of a two superconducting OPs in ErNi2B2C is shown. A distinct decrease of both OPs as temperature is lowered below T_N is observed.

Abstract:
Conductance histograms of work-hardened Al show a series up to 11 equidistant peaks with a period of 1.15 +/- 0.02 of the quantum conductance unit G_0 = 2e^2/h. Assuming the peaks originate from atomic discreteness, this agrees with the value of 1.16 G_0 per atom obtained in numerical calculations by Hasmy et al.

Point-contact (PC) spectroscopy measurements on antiferromagnetic (AF) (T_N=5.2K) HoNi2B2C single crystals in the normal and two different superconducting (SC) states (T_c=8.5K and $T_c^*=5.6K) are reported. The PC study of the electron-boson(phonon) interaction (EB(P)I) spectral function reveals pronounced phonon maxima at 16, 22 and 34meV. For the first time the high energy maxima at about 50meV and 100meV are resolved. Additionally, an admixture of a crystalline-electric-field (CEF) excitations with a maximum near 10meV and a `magnetic` peak near 3meV are observed. The contribution of the 10-meV peak in PC EPI constant λ_PC is evaluated as 20-30%, while contribution of the high energy modes at 50 and 100meV amounts about 10% for each maxima, so the superconductivity might be affected by CEF excitations. The SC gap in HoNi2B2C exhibits a standard single-band BCS-like dependence, but vanishes at $T_c^*=5.6K<T_c, with 2Δ/kT_c^*=3.9. The strong coupling Eliashberg analysis of the low-temperature SC phase with T_c^*=5.6K =T_N, coexisting with the commensurate AF structure, suggests a sizable value of the EPI constant λ_s=0.93. We also provide strong support for the recently proposed by us ''Fermi surface (FS) separation'' scenario for the coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity in magnetic borocarbides, namely, that the superconductivity in the commensurate AF phase survives at a special (nearly isotropic) FS sheet without an admixture of Ho 5d states. Above T_c^* the SC features in the PC characteristics are strongly suppressed pointing to a specific weakened SC state between T_c* and T_c.

We report an observation of spin-valve like hysteresis within a few atomic layers at a ferromagnetic interface. We use phonon spectroscopy of nanometer sized point contacts as an in-situ probe to study the mechanism of the effect. Distinct in energy phonon peaks for contacts with dissimilar nonmagnetic outer electrodes allow to localize the observed spin switching to the top or bottom interfaces for nanometer thin ferromagnetic layers. The mechanism consistent with our data is energetically distinct atomically thin surface spin layers that can form current or field driven surface spin-valves within a single ferromagnetic film.

Point-contact (PC) spectroscopy measurements of YNi2B2C single crystals in the normal and superconducting (SC) state (T_c=15.4K) for the main crystallographic directions are reported. The PC study reveals the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) spectral function with dominant phonon maximum around 12 meV and further weak structures (hump or kink) at higher energy at about 50 meV. No "soft" modes below 12 meV are resolved in the normal state. The PC EPI spectra are qualitatively similar for the different directions. Contrary, directional study of the SC gap results in Δ_[100]=1.5 meV for the a direction and Δ_[001]=2.3 meV along the c axis; however the critical temperature T_c in PC in all cases is near to that in the bulk sample. The value 2Δ_[001]/kT_c=3.6 is close to the BCS value of 3.52, and the temperature dependence Δ_[001](T) is BCS-like, while the for small gap Δ_[100](T) is below BCS behavior at T>T_c/2 similarly as in the two-gap superconductor MgB2. It is supposed that the directional variation Δcan be attributed to a multiband nature of the SC state in YNi2B2C.

An overview of the recent efforts in point-contact (PC) spectroscopy of the nickel borocarbide superconductors RNi2B2C in the normal and superconducting (SC) state is given. The results of measurements of the PC electron- boson(phonon) interaction spectral function are presented. Phonon maxima and crystalline-electric-field (CEF) excitations are observed in the PC spectra of compounds with R=Dy, Ho, Er and Tm, while for R=Y a dominant phonon maximum around 12 meV is characteristic. Additionally, non-phonon and non-CEF maxima are observed near 3 meV in R=Ho and near 6 meV in R=Dy. Directional PC study of the SC gap gives evidence for the multi-band nature of superconductivity in R=Y, Lu. At low temperature the SC gap in R=Ho exhibits a standard single-band BCS-like dependence, which vanishes above T_c^*= 5.6K< T_c=8.5K, where a specifc magnetic ordering starts to play a role. For R=Tm (T_c=10.5 K) a decrease of the SC gap is observed below 5 K.
