We present an analysis of the apsidal motion and light curve parameters of 54 never-before-studied galactic Algol-type binaries. This is the first analysis of such a large sample of eccentric eclipsing binaries in our Galaxy, and has enabled us to identify several systems that are worthy of further study. Bringing together data from various databases and surveys, supplemented with new observations, we have been able to trace the long-term evolution of the eccentric orbit over durations extending back up to several decades. Our present study explores a rather different sample of stars to those presented in the previously published catalogue of eccentric eclipsing binaries, sampling to fainter magnitudes, covering later spectral types, sensitive to different orbital periods with more than 50% of our systems having periods longer than six days. The typical apsidal motion in the sample is rather slow (mostly of order of centuries long), although in some cases this is less than 50 yr. All of the systems, except one, have eccentricities less than 0.5, with an average value of 0.23. Several of the stars also show evidence for additional period variability. In particular we can identify three systems in the sample, HD 44093, V611 Pup, and HD 313631, which likely represent relativistic apsidal rotators.

The rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) stars exhibit pulsational photometric and/or radial velocity variations on time scales of several minutes, which are essential to test current pulsation models as well as our assumptions of atmospheric structure characteristics. In addition, their chemical peculiarity makes them very interesting for probing stellar formation and evolution in the presence of a global magnetic field. To date, a limited number of only 61 roAp stars are known to show photometric variability. On the other hand, a literature survey yields 619 unique stars that have unsuccessfully been searched for variability of this kind. Stroemgren-Crawford uvbybeta photometry of stars from both subgroups were used to investigate whether there is a selection bias of the investigated stars. We also present new photometric measurements (202 hours in 59 different nights) of 55 roAp candidates.We did not detect any new roAp star. Although our detection limits are comparable to other surveys, we also did not find pulsations in the known roAp star HD 12098, which may be a consequence of temporal amplitude changes. On the other hand, we do find some evidence for photometric variability of beta CrB at its spectroscopically derived pulsation period. From the uvbybeta photometry we conclude that the blue border of the roAp instability strip appears observationally well defined, whereas the red border is rather poorly known and studied. Within these boundaries, a total of 4646 candidates were identified which appear worthwhile to be investigated for short-term pulsational variability.

We present the first release of the Czech Variable star catalogue that currently contains 1228 stars whose variability was discovered by 60 Czech observers. The catalogue contains confirmed variable stars of various types, but also candidates. We give precise coordinates, cross identification with other catalogues, information about constellation, variability type, brightness, light elements, name of the discoverer and year of discovery. In eighty-eight percent of stars the variability type is estimated, for more than 60 % of the stars the light ephemerides are given.

New CCD photometric observations of fourteen short-period low-mass eclipsing binaries (LMB) in the photometric filters I, R and V were used for the light curve analysis. There still exists a discrepancy between radii as observed and those derived from the theoretical modelling for LMB in general. Mass calibration of all observed LMB was done using only the photometric indices. The light curve modelling of these selected systems were performed, yielding the new derived masses and radii for both components. We compared these systems with the compilation of other known double-lined LMB systems with uncertainties of masses and radii less then 5 \%, which includes 66 components of binaries where both spectroscopy and photometry were combined together. All of our systems are circular short-period binaries, and for some of them the photospheric spots were also used. A purely photometric study of the light curves without spectroscopy seems unable to achieve high enough precision and accuracy in the masses and radii to provide for a meaningful test of the M-R relation for low-mass stars.

The types of instability in the interacting binary stars are reviewed. The project "Inter-Longitude Astronomy" is a series of smaller projects on concrete stars or groups of stars. It has no special funds, and is supported from resources and grants of participating organizations, when informal working groups are created. Totally we studied 1900+ variable stars of different types. The characteristic timescale is from seconds to decades and (extrapolating) even more. The monitoring of the first star of our sample AM Her was initiated by Prof. V.P. Tsesevich (1907-1983). Since more than 358 ADS papers were published. Some highlights of our photometric and photo-polarimetric monitoring and mathematical modelling of interacting binary stars of different types are presented: classical, asynchronous, intermediate polars and magnetic dwarf novae (DO Dra) with 25 timescales corresponding to different physical mechanisms and their combinations (part "Polar"); negative and positive superhumpers in nova-like and many dwarf novae stars ("Superhumper"); eclipsing "non-magnetic" cataclysmic variables; symbiotic systems ("Symbiosis"); super-soft sources (SSS, QR And); spotted (and not spotted) eclipsing variables with (and without) evidence for a current mass transfer ("Eclipser") with a special emphasis on systems with a direct impact of the stream into the gainer star's atmosphere, or V361 Lyr-type stars. Other parts of the ILA project are "Stellar Bell" (interesting pulsating variables of different types and periods - M, SR, RV Tau, RR Lyr, Delta Sct) and "Novice"(="New Variable") discoveries and classification with a subsequent monitoring for searching and studying possible multiple components of variability. Special mathematical methods have been developed to create a set of complementary software for statistically optimal modelling of variable stars of different types.

Eclipsing binaries remain crucial objects for our understanding of the universe. In particular, those that are components of multiple systems can help us solve the problem of the formation of these systems. Analysis of the radial velocities together with the light curve produced for the first time precise physical parameters of the components of the multiple systems V773 Cas, QS Aql, and BR Ind. Their visual orbits were also analyzed, which resulted in slightly improved orbital elements. What is typical for all these systems is that their most dominant source is the third distant component. The system V773 Cas consists of two similar G1-2V stars revolving in a circular orbit and a more distant component of the A3V type. Additionally, the improved value of parallax was calculated to be 17.6 mas. Analysis of QS Aql resulted in the following: the inner eclipsing pair is composed of B6V and F1V stars, and the third component is of about the B6 spectral type. The outer orbit has high eccentricity of about 0.95, and observations near its upcoming periastron passage between the years 2038 and 2040 are of high importance. Also, the parallax of the system was derived to be about 2.89 mas, moving the star much closer to the Sun than originally assumed. The system BR Ind was found to be a quadruple star consisting of two eclipsing K dwarfs orbiting each other with a period of 1.786 days; the distant component is a single-lined spectroscopic binary with an orbital period of about 6 days. Both pairs are moving around each other on their 148 year orbit.

The systems V949 Cen, V358 Pup, and V1055 Sco are triples comprised of an eclipsing binary orbiting with a distant visual component on a much longer orbit. The first detailed photometric analysis of these interesting systems was performed using also the archival data from Hipparcos, ASAS, SuperWASP, OMC, and Pi Of The Sky surveys. The system V358~Pup was also analysed using the archival ESO spectra and the radial velocities were derived. The analyses of their light curves revealed the physical properties of the eclipsing components, while the interferometric data for these systems obtained during the last century show that the binaries are also weakly gravitationally bounded with the third components on much longer orbits. The photometry was carried out with the robotic telescope FRAM (part of the Pierre Auger Cosmic Ray Observatory), located in Argentina. The BVRI light curves were analysed with the PHOEBE program, yielding the basic physical parameters of the systems and their orbits. V949 Cen and V358 Pup were found to be detached systems, while V1055 Sco is probably a semi-detached one. V358 Pup shows a slow apsidal motion, while for V1055 Sco we detected some period variation probably due to the third body in the system, which cannot easily be attributed to the close visual companion. Therefore, we speculate that V1055 Sco can be a quadruple system. For V949 Cen a new orbit was computed, having the orbital period of about 855 yr.
