Abstract:
We present the results of a study of the temporal behaviour of several diagnostic lines formed in the region of the accretion-disk/star interaction in the three magnetic Herbig Ae stars HD101412, HD104237, and HD190073. More than 100 spectra acquired with the ISAAC, X-shooter, and CRIRES spectrographs installed at the VLT-8m telescope (ESO, Chile), as well as at other observatories (OHP, Crimean A…

We present the results of a study of the temporal behaviour of several diagnostic lines formed in the region of the accretion-disk/star interaction in the three magnetic Herbig Ae stars HD101412, HD104237, and HD190073. More than 100 spectra acquired with the ISAAC, X-shooter, and CRIRES spectrographs installed at the VLT-8m telescope (ESO, Chile), as well as at other observatories (OHP, Crimean AO) were analyzed. The spectroscopic data were obtained in the He I lambda10830, Pa gamma and He I lambda5876 lines. We found that the temporal behaviour of the diagnostic lines in the spectra of all program stars can be widely explained by a rotational modulation of the line profiles generated by a local accretion flow. This result is in good agreement with the predictions of the magnetospheric accretion model. For the first time, the rotation period of HD104237 (P_rot = 5.37+-0.03 days), as well as the inclination angle (i = 21+-4deg) were determined. Additional analysis of the HARPSpol spectra of HD104237 and HD190073, taken from the ESO archive, with the use of the SVD method shows that the magnetic field structure of HD190073 is likely more complex than a simple dipole and contains a circumstellar component. For the first time, the magnetic field of the secondary component of the binary system HD104237 was also detected (<B_z> = 128+-10G).

We discuss two-dimensional mapping of the near-infrared emission-line intensity distributions and kinematics of the narrow-line region (NLR) of NGC 4151, obtained with the Gemini Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrograph, with a projected spatial resolution of ~8pc. The ionized gas intensity distribution follows the projected bi-cone morphology observed in previous optical narrow-band images, and its kinematics reveal outflows along the bi-cone. We propose a kinematic model in which the gas in the NLR moves at a velocity of ~600 km s^-1 up to ~100 pc from the nucleus. A completely distinct morphology and kinematic structure is observed for the molecular gas, which avoids the region of the bi-cone and has velocities close to systemic, and is consistent with an origin in the galaxy plane. The molecular gas thus traces the AGN feeding, while the ionized gas traces its feedback.

We present a detailed investigation of the incidence of circumnuclear dust structure in a large, well-matched sample of early-type galaxies with and without Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We present a detailed investigation of the incidence of circumnuclear dust structure in a large, well-matched sample of early-type galaxies with and without Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). All 34 early-type AGN hosts in our sample have circumnuclear dust, while dust is only observed in 26% (nine) of a pair-matched sample of 34 early-type, inactive galaxies. This result demonstrates a strong correlation between the presence of circumnuclear dust and accretion onto the central, supermassive black hole in elliptical and lenticular galaxies. This correlation is not present at later Hubble types, where a sample of 31 active and 31 inactive galaxies all contain circumnuclear dust. These archival, HST observations reveal a wide range of mostly chaotic dust morphologies. Current estimates suggest the dust settling or destruction time is on order of 10^8 years and therefore the presence of dust in ~ 50% of early-type galaxies requires frequent replenishment and similarly frequent fueling of their central, supermassive black holes. The observed dust could be internally-produced (via stellar winds) or externally-accreted, although there are observational challenges for both of these scenarios. Our analysis also reveals that approximately a third of the early-type galaxies without circumnuclear dust have nuclear stellar disks. These nuclear stellar disks may provide a preferred kinematic axis to externally-accreted material and this material may in turn form new stars in these disks. The observed incidence of nuclear stellar disks and circumnuclear dust suggests that episodic replenishment of nuclear stellar disks occurs and is approximately concurrent with the fueling of the central AGN.

We present time series spectrophotometric observations of GQ Lupi, a typical representative of the YY Ori subgroup of T Tauri stars that show conspicuous inverse PCygni profiles. The data set consists of 32 exposures taken over 5 and 8 consecutive nights of May and July 1998, respectively, and covers the spectral range of 3100 Å~ $< λ< 5100 $ Å. The region redward and next to the Balmer jump varies significantly on a night-to-night basis and the amplitude of such variability decreases sharply at $λ>$ 4600 Å. The Balmer continuum slope indicates that the spectral energy distribution is governed by a gas of temperature greater than that of the stellar photosphere. We find an anticorrelation between the veiling and the observed Balmer jump. The time series of the redward absorption component behaves similarly to the veiling time series. We model the emitting region by a gas of uniform temperature and density. The models indicate that the gas densities and the respective temperatures are strongly anticorrelated. In addition, the model time series show that the increase in the gas density is mirrored by an increase of the projected emitting area (filling factor). Large/small gas densities and filling factors are characterized by high/low observed veiling. As the accretion rate fades from night-to-night, the observed veiling decreases, as does the gas density and the total projected emitting area.

We report the recovery of a spectroscopic event in eta Carinae in 1997/98 after a prediction by Damineli (1996). A true periodicity with P = 2020+-5 days (0.2% uncertainty) is obtained. The line intensities and the radial-velocity curve display a phase-locked behavior implying that the energy and dynamics of the event repeat from cycle to cycle. This rules out S Doradus oscillation or multiple shell ejection by an unstable star as the explanation of the spectroscopic events. A colliding-wind binary scenario is supported by our spectroscopic data and by X-ray observations. Although deviations from a simple case exist around periastron, intensive monitoring during the next event (mid 2003) will be crucial to the understanding of the system.
