Binary interactions in relativistic plasma, such as Coulomb and Compton scattering as well as pair creation and annihilation are well known and studied in details. Triple interactions, namely relativistic bremsstrahlung, double Compton scattering, radiative pair production, triple pair production/annihilation and their inverse processes, are usually considered as emission processes in astrophysical problems, as well as in laboratory plasmas. Their role in plasma kinetics is fundamental [1]. We present a new conservative scheme for computation of Uehling-Uhlenbeck collision integral for all triple interactions in relativistic plasma based on direct integration of exact QED matrix elements. Reaction rates for thermal distributions are compared, where possible, with the corresponding analytic expressions, showing good agreement. Our results are relevant for quantitative description of relativistic plasmas out of equilibrium, both in astrophysical and laboratory conditions.

In this work the measurement of temperature and flux of the thermal component in the early afterglows of several gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) along with the total flux in the prompt phase are used to determine initial radii of the outflow as well as its Lorentz factors. Results indicate that in some cases the outflow has relatively low Lorentz factors $Γ<10$, favouring cocoon interpretation, while in other cases Lorentz factors are larger $Γ>10$, indicating diffusive photospheric origin of the thermal component, associated with an ultrarelativistic outflow.

Within the binary-driven hypernova I (BdHN I) scenario, the gamma-ray burst GRB190114C originates in a binary system composed of a massive carbon-oxygen core (CO$_{core}$), and a binary neutron star (NS) companion. As the CO$_{core}$ undergoes a supernova explosion with the creation of a new neutron star ($ν$NS), hypercritical accretion occurs onto the companion binary neutron star until it exceeds the critical mass for gravitational collapse. The formation of a black hole (BH) captures $10^{57}$ baryons by enclosing them within its horizon, and thus a cavity of approximately $10^{11}$ cm is formed around it with initial density $10^{-7}$ g/cm$^3$. A further depletion of baryons in the cavity originates from the expansion of the electron-positron-photon ($e^{+}e^{-}γ$) plasma formed at the collapse, reaching a density of $10^{-14}$ g/cm$^3$ by the end of the interaction. It is demonstrated here using an analytical model complemented by a hydrodynamical numerical simulation that part of the $e^{+}e^{-}γ$ plasma is reflected off the walls of the cavity. The consequent outflow and its observed properties are shown to coincide with the featureless emission occurring in a time interval of duration $t_{rf}$, measured in the rest frame of the source, between $11$ and $20$ s of the GBM observation. Moreover, similar features of the GRB light curve were previously observed in GRB 090926A and GRB 130427A, all belonging to the BdHN I class. This interpretation supports the general conceptual framework presented in Ruffini et al. (2019) and guarantees that a low baryon density is reached in the cavity, a necessary condition for the operation of the "inner engine" of the GRB presented in an accompanying article (Ruffini & Moradi 2019).

We motivate how the most recent progress in the understanding the nature of the GeV radiation in most energetic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), the binary-driven hypernovae (BdHNe), has led to the solution of a forty years unsolved problem in relativistic astrophysics: how to extract the rotational energy from a Kerr black hole for powering synchrotron emission and ultra high-energy cosmic rays. The "inner engine" is identified in the proper use of a classical solution introduced by Wald in 1974 duly extended to the most extreme conditions found around the newborn black hole in a BdHN. The energy extraction process occurs in a sequence impulsive processes each accelerating protons to $10^{21}$ eV in a timescale of $10^{-6}$ s and in presence of an external magnetic field of $10^{14}$ G. Specific example is given for a black hole of initial angular momentum $J=0.3\,M^2$ and mass $M\approx 3\,M_\odot$ leading to the GeV radiation of $10^{49}$ erg$\cdot$s$^{-1}$. The process can energetically continue for thousands of years.

The non-equilibrium electron-positron-photon plasma thermalization process is studied using relativistic Boltzmann solver, taking into account quantum corrections both in non-relativistic and relativistic cases. Collision integrals are computed from exact QED matrix elements for all binary and triple interactions in the plasma. It is shown that in non-relativistic case (temperatures $k_B T\leq 0.3 m_e c^2$) binary interaction rates dominate over triple ones, resulting in establishment of the kinetic equilibrium prior to final relaxation towards the thermal equilibrium, in agreement with the previous studies. On the contrary, in relativistic case (final temperatures $k_B T\geq 0.3 m_e c^2$) triple interaction rates are fast enough to prevent the establishment of kinetic equilibrium. It is shown that thermalization process strongly depends on quantum degeneracy in initial state, but does not depend on plasma composition.

We analyze GRB 151027A within the binary-driven hypernova (BdHN) approach, with progenitor a carbon-oxygen core on the verge of a supernova (SN) explosion and a binary companion neutron star (NS). The hypercritical accretion of the SN ejecta onto the NS leads to its gravitational collapse into a black hole (BH), to the emission of the GRB and to a copious $e^+e^-$ plasma. The impact of this $e^+e^-$ plasma on the SN ejecta explains {the} early soft X-ray flare observed in long GRBs. We here apply this approach to the UPE and to the hard X-ray flares. We use GRB 151027A as a prototype. From the time-integrated and the time-resolved analysis we identify a double component in the UPE and confirm its ultra-relativistic nature. We confirm the mildly-relativistic nature of the soft X-ray flare, of the hard X-ray flare and of the ETE. We show that the ETE identifies the transition from a SN to the HN. We then address the theoretical justification of these observations by integrating the hydrodynamical propagation equations of the $e^+ e^-$ into the SN ejecta, the latter independently obtained from 3D smoothed-particle-hydrodynamics simulations. We conclude that the UPE, the hard X-ray flare and the soft X-ray flare do not form a causally connected sequence: Within our model they are the manifestation of \textbf{the same} physical process of the BH formation as seen through different viewing angles, implied by the morphology and the $\sim 300$~s rotation period of the HN ejecta.

We analyze the early X-ray flares in the GRB "flare-plateau-afterglow" (FPA) phase observed by Swift-XRT. The FPA occurs only in one of the seven GRB subclasses: the binary-driven hypernovae (BdHNe). This subclass consists of long GRBs with a carbon-oxygen core and a neutron star (NS) binary companion as progenitors. The hypercritical accretion of the supernova (SN) ejecta onto the NS can lead to the gravitational collapse of the NS into a black hole. Consequently, one can observe a GRB emission with isotropic energy $E_{iso}\gtrsim10^{52}$~erg, as well as the associated GeV emission and the FPA phase. Previous work had shown that gamma-ray spikes in the prompt emission occur at $\sim 10^{15}$--$10^{17}$~cm with Lorentz gamma factor $Γ\sim10^{2}$--$10^{3}$. Using a novel data analysis we show that the time of occurrence, duration, luminosity and total energy of the X-ray flares correlate with $E_{iso}$. A crucial feature is the observation of thermal emission in the X-ray flares that we show occurs at radii $\sim10^{12}$~cm with $Γ\lesssim 4$. These model independent observations cannot be explained by the "fireball" model, which postulates synchrotron and inverse Compton radiation from a single ultra relativistic jetted emission extending from the prompt to the late afterglow and GeV emission phases. We show that in BdHNe a collision between the GRB and the SN ejecta occurs at $\simeq10^{10}$~cm reaching transparency at $\sim10^{12}$~cm with $Γ\lesssim4$. The agreement between the thermal emission observations and these theoretically derived values validates our model and opens the possibility of testing each BdHN episode with the corresponding Lorentz gamma factor.

This paper summarizes the limits on propagation of ultra high energy particles in the Universe, set up by their interactions with cosmic background of photons and neutrinos. By taking into account cosmic evolution of these backgrounds and considering appropriate interactions we derive the mean free path for ultra high energy photons, protons and neutrinos. For photons the relevant processes are the Breit-Wheeler process as well as the double pair production process. For protons the relevant reactions are the photopion production and the Bethe-Heitler process. We discuss the interplay between the energy loss length and mean free path for the Bethe-Heitler process. Neutrino opacity is determined by its scattering off the cosmic background neutrino. We compute for the first time the high energy neutrino horizon as a function of its energy.

Optically thick energy dominated plasma created in the source of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) expands radially with acceleration and forms a shell with constant width measured in the laboratory frame. When strong Lorentz factor gradients are present within the shell it is supposed to spread at sufficiently large radii. There are two possible mechanisms of spreading: hydrodynamical and thermal ones. We consider both mechanisms evaluating the amount of spreading that occurs during expansion up to the moment when the expanding shell becomes transparent for photons. We compute the hydrodynamical spreading of an ultrarelativistically expanding shell. In the case of thermal spreading we compute the velocity spread as a function of two parameters: comoving temperature and bulk Lorentz factor of relativistic Maxwellian distribution. Based on this result we determine the value of thermal spreading of relativistically expanding shell. We found that thermal spreading is negligible for typical GRB parameters. Instead hydrodynamical spreading appears to be significant, with the shell width reaching $\sim10^{10}$ cm for total energy $E=10^{54}$ erg and baryonic loading $B=10^{-2}$. Within the fireshell model such spreading will result in the duration of Proper Gamma-Ray Bursts up to several seconds.

We use the Fokker-Planck approximation to the Boltzmann equation, and obtain the generalized Kompaneets equation which takes into account anisotropic distribution of photons developed near the photosphere. This equation is solved numerically for relativistic steady wind and the observed spectrum is found in agreement with previous studies. We also study the photospheric emission for different temperature dependences on radius in such outflows. In particular, we found that for $T\propto r^{-2}$ the Band low energy photon index of the observed spectrum is $α\simeq -1$, as typically observed in Gamma Ray Bursts.

We studied the decoupling of photons from ultra-relativistic spherically symmetric outflows expanding with constant velocity by means of Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation. For outflows with finite width we confirm the existence of two regimes: photon thick and photon thin introduced recently by Ruffini, Siutsou, Vereshchagin (2011), hereafter RSV. The probability density function of photon last scattering is shown to be very different in these two cases. We also obtained spectra as well as light curves. In photon thick case, the time integrated spectrum is much broader than the Planck function and its shape is well described by the fuzzy photosphere approximation introduced by RSV. In the photon thin case we confirm the crucial role of photon diffusion, hence the probability density of decoupling has a maximum near the diffusion radius, well below the photosphere. Its spectrum has Band shape. It is produced when the outflow is optically thick and its peak is formed at diffusion radius.

In this paper we reexamine the optical depth of ultrarelativistic spherically symmetric outflows and reevaluate the photospheric radius for each model during both the acceleration and coasting phases. It is shown that for both the wind and the shell models there are two asymptotic solutions for the optical depth during the coasting phase of the outflow. In particular we show that quite counterintuitively a geometrically thin shell may appear as a thick wind for photons propagating inside it. For this reason we introduce notions of photon thick and photon thin outflows, which appear more general and better physically motivated with respect to winds and shells. Photosphere of relativistic outflow is a dynamic surface. We study its geometry and find that the photosphere of photon thin outflow has always a convex shape, while in the photon thick one it is initially convex (there is always a photon thin layer in any outflow) and then it becomes concave asymptotically approaching the photosphere of an infinitely long wind. We find that both instantaneous and time integrated observed spectra are very close to the thermal one for photon thick outflows, in line with existing studies. It is our main finding that the photospheric emission from the photon thin outflow produces non thermal time integrated spectra, which may be described by the Band function well known in the GRB literature. We find that energetic GRBs should produce photon thin outflows with photospheric emission lasting less than one second for the total energy $E_0\leq10^{54}$ erg and baryonic loading parameter $B\leq10^{-2}$. It means that only time integrated spectra may be observed from such GRBs.

We study the frequency of the plasma oscillations of electron-positron pairs created by the vacuum polarization in an uniform electric field with strength E in the range 0.2 Ec < E < 10 Ec. Following the approach adopted in [1] we work out one second order ordinary differential equation for a variable related to the velocity from which we can recover the classical plasma oscillation equation when E -> 0. Thereby, we focus our attention on its evolution in time studying how this oscillation frequency approaches the plasma frequency. The time-scale needed to approach to the plasma frequency and the power spectrum of these oscillations are computed. The characteristic frequency of the power spectrum is determined uniquely from the initial value of the electric field strength. The effects of plasma degeneracy and pair annihilation are discussed.

By numerically solving the relativistic Boltzmann equations, we compute the time scale for relaxation to thermal equilibrium for an optically thick electron-positron plasma with baryon loading. We focus on the time scales of electromagnetic interactions. The collisional integrals are obtained directly from the corresponding QED matrix elements. Thermalization time scales are computed for a wide range of values of both the total energy density (over 10 orders of magnitude) and of the baryonic loading parameter (over 6 orders of magnitude). This also allows us to study such interesting limiting cases as the almost purely electron-positron plasma or electron-proton plasma as well as intermediate cases. These results appear to be important both for laboratory experiments aimed at generating optically thick pair plasmas as well as for astrophysical models in which electron-positron pair plasmas play a relevant role.

In the recent Letter [1] we considered the approach of nonequilibrium pair plasma towards thermal equilibrium state adopting a kinetic treatment and solving numerically the relativistic Boltzmann equations. It was shown that plasma in the energy range 0.1-10 MeV first reaches kinetic equilibrium, on a timescale t_{k}<10^{-14} sec, with detailed balance between binary interactions such as Compton, Bhabha and Moller scattering, and pair production and annihilation. Later the electron-positron-photon plasma approaches thermal equilibrium on a timescale t_{th}<10^{-12} sec, with detailed balance for all direct and inverse reactions. In the present paper we systematically present details of the computational scheme used in [1], as well as generalize our treatment, considering proton loading of the pair plasma. When proton loading is large, protons thermalize first by proton-proton scattering, and then with the electron-positron-photon plasma by proton-electron scattering. In the opposite case of small proton loading proton-electron scattering dominates over proton-proton one. Thus in all cases the plasma, even with proton admixture, reaches thermal equilibrium configuration on a timescale t_{th}<10^{-11} sec. We show that it is crucial to account for not only binary but also triple direct and inverse interactions between electrons, positrons, photons and protons. Several explicit examples are given and the corresponding timescales for reaching kinetic and thermal equilibria are determined.

P-GRBs, introduced by us in 2001, are sometimes considered "precursors" of the main GRB event in the current literature. We show in this paper how the fireshell model leads to the understanding of the structure of GRBs, with precise estimates of the time sequence and intensities of the P-GRB and the of the afterglow. It leads as well to a natural classification of the canonical GRBs which overcomes the traditional one in short and long GRBs.

Abstract:
We discuss the temporal evolution of the pair plasma created in Gamma-Ray Burst sources. A particular attention is paid to the relaxation of the plasma into thermal equilibrium. We also discuss the connection between the dynamics of expansion and the spatial geometry of the plasma. The role of the baryonic loading parameter is emphasized.

Starting from a nonequilibrium configuration we analyse the essential role of the direct and the inverse binary and triple interactions in reaching an asymptotic thermal equilibrium in a homogeneous isotropic electron-positron-photon plasma. We focus on energies in the range 0.1--10 MeV. We numerically integrate the integro-partial differential relativistic Boltzmann equation with the exact QED collisional integrals taking into account all binary and triple interactions in the plasma. We show that first, when detailed balance is reached for all binary interactions on a timescale $t_{k}\lesssim10^{-14}$sec, photons and electron-positron pairs establish kinetic equilibrium. Successively, when triple interactions fulfill the detailed balance on a timescale $t_{eq}\lesssim10^{-12}$sec, the plasma reaches thermal equilibrium. It is shown that neglecting the inverse triple interactions prevents reaching thermal equilibrium. Our results obtained in the theoretical physics domain also find application in astrophysics and cosmology.

Abstract:
We derive luminosity distance equation in Gurzadyan-Xue cosmological models and compared it with available supernovae and radio galaxies data sets. We found that the luminosity distance does not depend explicitly the speed of light and the gravitation constant, and depends only on the matter parameter (GX-invariant) and curvature.

Our general treatment, encompassing also the traditional, well studied case of E > Ec, shows the existence in both cases of a maximum Lorentz factor acquired by electrons and positrons and allows determination of the a maximal length of oscillation. We quantitatively estimate how plasma oscillations reduce the rate of pair creation and increase the time scale of the pair production. These results are particularly relevant in view of the experimental progress in approaching the field strengths E < Ec.

Abstract:
Analysis of cosmological solutions of GX dark energy models shows the presence of a separatrix in the phase space of solutions which divides them into two classes: Friedmannian-like with initial singularity and non-Friedmannian solutions. The invariants are found, that reveal the intrinsic symmetry in GX models.

Non-perturbative quantum geometric effects in Loop Quantum Cosmology predict a $ρ^2$ modification to the Friedmann equation at high energies. The quadratic term is negative definite and can lead to generic bounces when the matter energy density becomes equal to a critical value of the order of the Planck density. The non-singular bounce is achieved for arbitrary matter without violation of positive energy conditions. By performing a qualitative analysis we explore the nature of the bounce for inflationary and Cyclic model potentials. For the former we show that inflationary trajectories are attractors of the dynamics after the bounce implying that inflation can be harmoniously embedded in LQC. For the latter difficulties associated with singularities in cyclic models can be overcome. We show that non-singular cyclic models can be constructed with a small variation in the original Cyclic model potential by making it slightly positive in the regime where scalar field is negative.

The likelihood analysis with supernovae and radio galaxies data and their characteristics (age, the deceleration parameter), again demonstrate the crucial role of the $Ω_{sep}$ for all models, in spite of the diversity of both, the initial equations and their solutions.

The dark energy formula derived by Gurzadyan and Xue which leads to a value fitting the SN data, provides a scaling relation between the physical constants and cosmological parameters and defines a set of cosmological models. In previous works we have considered several of those models and derived the cosmological equations for each case. In this letter, we present the phase portrait analysis of those models. Surprisingly we found, first, that the separatrix in the phase space which determines the character of solutions depends solely on the value of the current matter density. Namely, at $Ω_m>2/3$ the equations describe Friedmannian Universe with the classical singularity at the beginning. While at $Ω_m<2/3$ all solutions for all models start with zero density and non vanishing scale factor. Secondly, more remarkable, the value $Ω_{sep}=2/3$ defining the separatrix is the same for all models, which reveales an underlying invariance hidden in the models, possibly, due to the basic nature of the GX-scaling.

The formula for dark energy density derived by Gurzadyan and Xue provides a value of density parameter of dark energy in remarkable agreement with current cosmological datasets, unlike numerous phenomenological dark energy scenarios where the corresponding value is postulated. This formula suggests the possibility of variation of physical constants such as the speed of light and the gravitational constant. Considering several cosmological models based on that formula and deriving the cosmological equations for each case, we show that, in all models source terms appear in the continuity equation. So, one one hand, GX models make up a rich set covering a lot of currently proposed models of dark energy, on the other hand, they reveal hidden symmetries, with a particular role of the separatrix $Ω_m=2/3$, and link with the issue of the content of physical constants.

Cosmological models with varying by time physical constants, namely, speed of light and gravitational constant and/or their combinations, are considered. In one of the models, for example, vacuum energy density induces effective negative curvature, while another one has an unusual asymptotic. This analysis also explicitely rises the issue of the meaning and content of physical units and constants in cosmological context.

We use the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data on the spectrum of cosmic microwave background anisotropies to put constraints on the present amount of lepton asymmetry L, parameterized by the dimensionless chemical potential (also called degeneracy parameter) xi and on the effective number of relativistic particle species. We assume a flat cosmological model with three thermally distributed neutrino species having all the same mass and chemical potential, plus an additional amount of effectively massless exotic particle species. The extra energy density associated to these species is parameterized through an effective number of additional species DeltaN_oth$. We find that 0<|xi|<1.1 and correspondingly 0<|L|<0.9 at 2sigma, so that WMAP data alone cannot firmly rule out scenarios with a large lepton number; moreover, a small preference for this kind of scenarios is actually found. We also discuss the effect of the asymmetry on the estimation of other parameters and in particular of the neutrino mass. In the case of perfect lepton symmetry, we obtain the standard results. When the amount of asymmetry is left free, we find \sum m_nu < 3.6 eV at 2sigma. Finally we study how the determination of |L| is affected by the assumptions on DeltaN_oth. We find that lower values of the extra energy density allow for larger values of the lepton asymmetry, effectively ruling out, at 2sigma level, lepton symmetric models with DeltaN_oth=0.

In this paper we provide approximate analytical analysis of stability of nonsingular inflationary chaotic-type cosmological models. Initial conditions for nonsingular solutions at the bounce correspond to dominance of potential part of the energy density of the scalar field over its kinetic part both within general relativity and gauge theories of gravity. Moreover, scalar field at the bounce exceeds the planckian value and on expansion stage these models correspond to chaotic inflation. Such solutions can be well approximated by explicitly solvable model with constant effective potential (cosmological term) and massless scalar field during the bounce and on stages of quasi-exponential contraction and expansion. Perturbative analysis shows that nonsingular inflationary solutions are exponentially unstable during contraction stage. This result is compared with numerical calculations.

Solutions of gravitational equations of gauge theories of gravity in homogeneous isotropic world with massive scalar field are investigated in the case of flat cosmological models. Special attention is dedicated to general behavior of solutions on contraction stage. It is shown, that on expansion stage inflationary solutions are generic feature of the model. At the same time on contraction stage an effective equation of state is similar to the case of massless scalar field $p=ρ$ at the beginning of evolution and tends to the equation of ultrarelativistic gas $p=ρ/3$. The Hubble parameter tends to some negative value on contraction stage, depending on the mass of the scalar field. Nonsingular solutions in this model are unstable.
