Amorphous Co-rich microwires with excellent soft magnetic and mechanical properties produced by melt-extraction technique are emerging as a multifunctional material for a variety of applications ranging from ultrasensitive magnetic field sensors to structural health self-monitoring composites. There is a pressing need for enhancing these properties to make the microwires practical for integration into new technologies. Conventional heat treatments at temperature below crystallization may improve the magnetic softness of an as-quenched amorphous wire, but usually deteriorate the good mechanical characteristic of the wire due to crystallization. To overcome this, we propose a new approach that utilizes the advantages of a multi-step Joule current annealing method to design novel (nanocrystal, amorphous)/amorphous core/shell structures directly from as-quenched amorphous microwires. These results show that the density and size of nanocrystals in the core can be optimized by controlling the Joule current intensity, resulting in the large enhancement of soft magnetic and giant magneto-impedance properties, while the amorphous shell preserves the excellent mechanical strength of the microwire. This study also provides a new pathway for the design of novel core/shell structures directly from rapidly quenched amorphous magnetic materials that are currently exploited in high frequency transformers, sensing and cooling devices.

Quantum mechanical calculations require the repeated solution of a Schrödinger equation for the wavefunctions of the system. Recent work has shown that enriched finite element methods significantly reduce the degrees of freedom required to obtain accurate solutions. However, time to solution has been adversely affected by the need to solve a generalized eigenvalue problem and the ill-conditioning of associated systems matrices. In this work, we address both issues by proposing a stable and efficient orbital-enriched partition-of-unity method to solve the Schrödinger boundary-value problem in a parallelepiped unit cell subject to Bloch-periodic boundary conditions. In our proposed PUM, the three-dimensional domain is covered by overlapping patches, with a compactly-supported, non-negative weight function, that is identically equal to unity over some finite subset of its support associated with each patch. This so-called flat-top property provides a pathway to devise a stable approximation over the whole domain. On each patch, we use $p$-th degree orthogonal polynomials that ensure $p$-th order completeness, and in addition include eigenfunctions of the radial solution of the Schrödinger equation. Furthermore, we adopt a variational lumping approach to construct a block-diagonal overlap matrix that yields a standard eigenvalue problem and demonstrate accuracy, stability and efficiency of the method.

We consider long-range correlated disorder and mutual interacting particles according to a dipole-dipole coupling as modifications to the one-dimensional Anderson model. Technically we rely on the (numerical) exact diagonalization of the system's Hamilitonian. From the perspective of different localization measures we confirm and extend the picture of the emergence of delocalized states with increasing correlations. Beside these studies a definition for multi-particle localization is proposed. In the case of two interacting bosons we observe a sensitivity of localization with respect to the range of the particle-particle interaction and insensitivity to the coupling's sign, which should stimulate new theoretical approaches and experimental investigations with e.g. dipolar cold quantum gases.
This revised manuscript is much more explicit compared to the initial version of the paper. Major extensions have been applied to Sects. II and III where we updated and added figures and we more extensively compared our results to the literature. Furthermore, Sect. III additionally contains a phenomenological line of reasoning that bridges from delocalization by correlation to delocalization by interaction on the basis of the multi-particle Hamilton matrix.

We present a systematic study of transport and thermodynamic properties of the Laves phase system Nb$_{1-y}$Fe$_{2+y}$. Our measurements confirm that Fe-rich samples, as well as those rich in Nb (for $\mid y\mid\geq 0.02$), show bulk ferromagnetism at low temperature. For stoichiometric NbFe$_2$, on the other hand, magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and magnetoresistance results point towards spin-density wave (SDW) order, possibly helical, with a small ordering wavevector $Q \sim 0.05$ Å$^{-1}$. Our results suggest that on approaching the stoichiometric composition from the iron-rich side, ferromagnetism changes into long-wavelength SDW order. In this scenario, $Q$ changes continuously from 0 to small, finite values at a Lifshitz point in the phase diagram, which is located near $y=+0.02$. Further reducing the Fe content suppresses the SDW transition temperature, which extrapolates to zero at $y\approx -0.015$. Around this Fe content magnetic fluctuations dominate the temperature dependence of the resistivity and of the heat capacity which deviate from their conventional Fermi liquid forms, inferring the presence of a quantum critical point. Because the critical point is located between the SDW phase associated with stoichiometric NbFe$_2$ and the ferromagnetic order which reemerges for very Nb-rich NbFe$_2$, the observed temperature dependences could be attributed both to proximity to SDW order or to ferromagnetism.

We investigated the magnetotransport properties of high-mobility InAs/GaSb antidot lattices. In addition to the usual commensurability features at low magnetic field we found a broad maximum of classical origin around 2.5 T. In addition to the usual commensurability features at low magnetic field we found a broad maximum of classical origin around 2.5 T. The latter can be ascribed to a class of rosetta type orbits encircling a single antidot. This is shown by both a simple transport calculation based on a classical Kubo formula and an analysis of the Poincare surface of section at different magnetic field values. At low temperatures we observe weak 1/B-periodic oscillations superimposed on the classical maximum.
