Light-matter interactions can be used as a tool to realize novel many-body states of matter and to study the interplay between electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom. In particular, tightly bound many-body states that behave as coherent quasi-particles are rare, and may lead to unconventional technological applications beyond the semi-conductor paradigm, particularly if these excitations are bosonic and can condense. Two-dimensional magnetic systems present a pristine platform to realize and study such states. We construct a theory that explains the low-energy optical excitations at 1.476 eV and 1.498 eV observed by photoluminiscence, optical absorption, and RIXS in the van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS$_3$. Using \textit{ab initio} methods, we construct a two-band Hubbard model for two \textit{effective} Ni orbitals of the original lattice. The dominant effective hopping corresponds to third-nearest neighbours. This model exhibits two triplet-singlet excitations of energy near two times the Hund exchange. From perturbation theory, we obtain an effective model for the movement of the singlets in an antiferromagnetic background, that we solve using a generalized self-consistent Born approximation. These singlet excitations, dressed by a cloud of magnons, move coherently as polaronic-like quasi-particles, "singlet polarons". Our theory explains the main features of the observed spectra.

A few years ago, a topological quantum phase transition (TQPT) has been found in Anderson and Kondo 2-channel spin-1 impurity models that include a hard-axis anisotropy term $DS_z^2$ with $D > 0$. The most remarkable manifestation of the TQPT is a jump in the spectral density of localized electrons, at the Fermi level, from very high to very low values as $D$ is increased. If the two conduction channels are equivalent, the transition takes place at the critical anisotropy $D_c \sim 2.5\; T_K$, where $T_K$ is the Kondo temperature for $D=0$. This jump might be important to develop a molecular transistor. The jump is due to a corresponding one in the Luttinger integral, which has a topological non-trivial value $π/2$ for $D > D_c$. Here, we review the main results for the spectral density and highlight the significance of the theory for the interpretation of measurements conducted on magnetic atoms or molecules on metallic surfaces. In these experiments, where $D$ is held constant, the energy scale $T_K$ is manipulated by some parameters. The resulting variation gives rise to a differential conductance $dI/dV$, measured by scanning-tunneling spectroscopy, which is consistent with a TQPT at an intermediate value of $T_K$. We also show that the theory can be extended to integer spin $S>1$ and two-impurity systems. This is also probably true for half-integer spin and non-equivalent channels in some cases.

Using the density-matrix renormalization group, we determine the different topological phases and low-energy excitations of a time-reversal invariant topological superconducting (TRITOPS) wire with extended s-wave superconductivity, Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and on-site repulsion $U$, under an externally applied Zeeman field $J$. For the case in which $J$ is perpendicular to the SOC, the model describes a chain of Shiba impurities on top of a superconductor with extended superconductor pairing. We identify the different topological phases of the model at temperature $T=0$, and in particular study the stability of the TRITOPS phase against the Zeeman field $J$ and the chemical potential $μ$, for different values of $U$. In the case where the magnetic field $J$ is perpendicular to the SOC axis, the pair of Kramers-degenerate Majorana zero modes at the edges of the system that exist for $J=0$, remain degenerate until a critical value of the magnetic field is reached. For $J$ parallel to the SOC and up to moderate values of $U$, the fractional spin projection $\langle S_y \rangle=1/4$ at the ends, found for non-interacting wires at $U=0$, is recovered. In addition, the analytic expression that relates $\langle S_y \rangle$ with $J$ for finite non-interacting chains is shown to be universal up to moderate values of $U$.

Using an unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation to decouple the Coulomb term, we obtain that the quality of the Majorana end states is seriously affected by this term only when the dependence of the low-lying energies with the energy of the quantum dot shows a "diamond" shape, characteristic of short wires. We discuss limitations of the simplest effective models to describe the physics. We expect the same behavior in more realistic models for topological superconducting wires.

A topological 'Thouless' pump represents the quantised motion of particles in response to a slow, cyclic modulation of external control parameters. The Thouless pump, like the quantum Hall effect, is of fundamental interest in physics because it links physically measurable quantities, such as particle currents, to geometric properties of the experimental system, which can be robust against perturbations and thus technologically useful. So far, experiments probing the interplay between topology and inter-particle interactions have remained relatively scarce. Here we observe a Thouless-type charge pump in which the particle current and its directionality inherently rely on the presence of strong interactions. Experimentally, we utilise a two-component Fermi gas in a dynamical superlattice which does not exhibit a sliding motion and remains trivial in the single-particle regime. However, when tuning interparticle interactions from zero to positive values, the system undergoes a transition from being stationary to drifting in one direction, consistent with quantised pumping in the first cycle. Remarkably, the topology of the interacting pump trajectory cannot be adiabatically connected to a non-interacting limit, highlighted by the fact that only one atom is transferred per cycle. Our experiments suggest that Thouless charge pumps are promising platforms to gain insights into interaction-driven topological transitions and topological quantum matter.

We study a system composed of two quantum dots connected in series between two leads at different temperatures, in the limit of large intratomic repulsion. Using the non-crossing approximation, we calculate the spectral densities at both dots $ρ_i(ω)$, the thermal and thermoelectric responses, thermopower and figure of merit in different regimes. The interatomic repulsionleads to finite heat transport even if the hopping between the dots $t=0$. The thermopower can be very large compared to single-dot systems in several regimes. The changes in sign of the thermoelectric current can be understood from the position and magnitude of the Kondo and charge-transfer peaks in $ρ_i(ω)$. The figure of merit can reach values near 0.7. The violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law is much more significant than in previously studied nanoscopic systems. An analysis of the widths of $ρ_i(ω)$ indicates that the dots are at effective temperatures $T_i$ intermediate between those of the two leads, which tend to be the same for large $T$.

We obtain the quantum phase diagram of the ionic Hubbard model including electron-hole symmetric density-dependent hopping. The boundaries of the phases are determined by crossing of excited levels with particular discrete symmetries, which coincide with jumps of charge and spin Berry phases with a topological meaning. Reducing the magnitude of the hopping terms that do not change the total number of singly occupied sites with respect to the other one, the region of the phase diagram occupied by the fully gapped spontaneously dimerized insulator (which separates the band insulating and Mott insulating phases) is enlarged, particularly for small values of the alternating on-site energy. This result might be relevant for experiments in cold atoms in which topological charge pumping is observed when alternation in the hopping is included.

The hopping parameters are obtained from maximally localized Wannier functions derived from \textit{ab initio} calculations. Using the cell perturbation method, we derive both a generalized $t-J$ model $H_{tJ}$ and a one-band Hubbard model $H_{H}$ to describe the low-energy physics of the system. $H_{tJ}$ has the advantage of having a smaller relevant Hilbert space, facilitating numerical calculations, while additional terms should be included in $H_{H}$ to accurately describe the multi-band physics of $H_m$. Using $H_{tJ}$ and DMRG, we calculate the wave-vector resolved photoemission and discuss the relevant features in comparison with recent experiments. In agreement with previous calculations, we find that the addition of an attractive nearest-neighbor interaction of the order of the nearest-neighbor hopping shifts weight from the $3 k_F$ to the holon-folding branch. Kinetic effects also contribute to this process.

Based on symmetry and previous works, we show that the appropriate model to describe the system is the anisotropic two-channel spin-1 Kondo model (A2CS1KM), which has an underlying topological quantum phase transition (TQPT) between an ordinary Fermi liquid and a topological one with a non-trivial value of the Luttinger integral. Solving the model with the numerical renormalization group (NRG), we show that the different behaviors can be explained in a unified fashion as a function of $ρ_c$, and correspond to both Fermi liquids and an intermediate regime close to the TQPT in the topological phase. Further experiments should confirm this transition.

We discuss different properties and the ability of several topological invariants based on position operators to identify phase transitions, and compare with more accurate methods, like crossing of excited energy levels and jumps in Berry phases. The invariants have the form $\text{Im} \text{ln} \left\langle \exp \left[ i(2π/L)Σ_{j}x_{j} \left( m_{_{\uparrow }}\hat{n}_{j\uparrow } +m_{\downarrow }\hat{n}_{j\downarrow }\right) \right] \right\rangle $, where $L$ is the length of the system, $x_{j}$ the position of the site $j$, $\hat{n}_{jσ}$ the operator of the number of particles at site $j$ with spin $σ$. We show that $m_{σ}$ should be integers, and in some cases of magnitude larger than 1 to lead to well defined expectation values. For the interacting Rice-Mele model (which contains the interacting Su-Schrieffer-Heeger and the Ionic Hubbard model as specific cases), we show that three different invariants give complementary information and are necessary and sufficient to construct the phase diagrams in the regions where the invariants are protected by inversion symmetry. We also discuss the consequences for pumping of charge and spin, and the effect of an Ising spin-spin interaction or a staggered magnetic field.

We focus on long junctions for which several channels intervene in the tunneling coupling through the junction. We present a description of the topological edge modes for different TRITOPS models including $p$-wave pairing and the combination of $s$-wave pairing with spin-orbit coupling. We derive effective low-energy Hamiltonians to describe the Josephson junction, which can be solved analytically to explain the contribution of the edge states to the Josephson current as a function of the phase bias. We find that edge-modes yield singular corrections to the CPR for both junction types. The primary effects occur for the response of the Majorana zero-modes at half-flux quantum phase $φ\approx π$ in TRITOPS-TRITOPS junctions and for integer flux quantum phase $φ\approx 0$ for TRITOPS-S junctions, respectively. The former effect is particularly strong two-component nematic superconductors. The latter effect leads to a spontaneously broken time-reversal symmetry in the TRITOPS-S junction and to a breakdown of the bulk-boundary correspondence.

Modeling a nickelocene molecule on a Cu(100) substrate as a two-orbital Anderson impurity with single-ion easy-plane anisotropy coupled to two conduction bands, we find that recent scanning tunneling spectra measured at different microscope tip heights reveal the existence of a topological quantum phase transition from the usual local Fermi liquid with high zero-bias conductance to a non-Landau Fermi liquid, characterized by a non-trivial quantized Luttinger integral, with a small conductance. The effects of intermediate valence, finite temperature, and structural relaxation of the molecule position allow us to explain the different observed behaviors.

A Thouless pump transports an integer amount of charge when pumping adiabatically around a singularity. We study the splitting of such a critical point into two separate critical points by adding a Hubbard interaction. Furthermore, we consider extensions to a spinful Rice-Mele model, namely a staggered magnetic field or an Ising-type spin coupling, further reducing the spin symmetry. The resulting models additionally allow for the transport of a single charge in a two-component system of spinful fermions, whereas in the absence of interactions, zero or two charges are pumped. In the SU(2)-symmetric case, the ionic Hubbard model is visited once along pump cycles that enclose a single singularity. Adding a staggered magnetic field additionally transports an integer amount of spin while the Ising term realizes a pure charge pump. We employ real-time simulations in finite and infinite systems to calculate the adiabatic charge and spin transport, complemented by the analysis of gaps and the many-body polarization to confirm the adiabatic nature of the pump. The resulting charge pumps are expected to be measurable in finite-pumping speed experiments in ultra-cold atomic gases, for which the SU(2) invariant version is the most promising path. We discuss the implications of our results for a related quantum-gas experiment by Walter et al. [arXiv:2204.06561].

The system of an iron phthalocyanine molecule on the Au(111) surface, has been studied recently due to its peculiar properties. In particular, several surprising results of scanning tunneling spectroscopy changing the position of the molecule and applying magnetic field can be explained by the {\it non-Landau} Fermi liquid state of a 2-channel spin-1 Kondo model with anisotropy. The localized orbitals near the Fermi level are three, one of symmetry $z^2$ and two (nearly) degenerate $π$ orbitals of symmetry $xz$ and $yz$. Previous studies using the numerical renormalization group neglected one of these orbitals to render the problem tractable. Here we investigate, using a slave-boson mean-field approximation, if the splitting $S$ between $π$ orbitals caused by spin-orbit coupling (SOC) justifies this approximation. We obtain an abrupt transition from a 3-band regime to a 2-band one at a value of $S$ which is about 1/3 of the atomic SOC for Fe, justifying the 2-band model for the system.

We present a minimal model that provides a description of the magnetic and thermodynamic properties of \Eu. The model contains two exchange coupling parameters, which are calculated using Density Functional Theory, and a local easy axis magnetic anisotropy term. The classical ground state of the system is a generalization of the well known 120$^\circ$ structure observed in triangular antiferromagnets. Monte Carlo simulations show two phase transitions as a function of the temperature. With increasing temperature, the system transitions from the ground state into a high-entropy collinear antiferromagnet, which in turn at higher temperatures presents a second order transition to a paramagnetic state. A high enough external magnetic field parallel to the anisotropy axis produces a spin-flop transition at low temperatures. The field also reduces the temperature range of stability of the collinear antiferromagnet phase and leads to a single phase transition as a function of the temperature. The reported behavior of the specific heat, the magnetization, and the magnetic susceptibility is in agreement with the available experimental data. Finally, we present the magnetic phase diagrams for magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the easy axis.

The paradigm of Landau's Fermi liquid theory has been challenged with the finding of a strongly interacting Fermi liquid that cannot be adiabatically connected to a non-interacting system. A spin-1 two-channel Kondo impurity with anisotropy D has a quantum phase transition between two topologically different Fermi liquids with a peak (dip) in the Fermi level for D < Dc (D > Dc). Extending this theory to general multi-orbital problems with finite magnetic field, we reinterpret in a unified and consistent fashion several experimental studies of iron phthalocyanine molecules on Au(111) that were previously described in disconnected and conflicting ways. The differential conductance shows a zero-bias dip that widens when the molecule is lifted from the surface (reducing the Kondo couplings) and is transformed continuously into a peak under an applied magnetic field. We reproduce all features and propose an experiment to induce the topological transition.

The parameters of the magnetic part of the free energy are derived from a mean-field solution of the magnetic interaction for arbitrary angular momentum. We calculate the quasiparticle dispersion and spectral weight of the quasiparticle that results when a hole is added to an antiferromagnetically ordered CuO$_2$ plane of a cuprate superconductor. We also calculate the magnon contribution to the quasiparticle spectral function. We start from a multiband model for the cuprates considered previously [Nat. Phys. \textbf{10}, 951 (2014)]. We map this model and the operator for creation of an O hole to an effective one-band generalized $t-J$ model, without free parameters. The effective model is solved using the state of the art self-consistent Born approximation. Our results reproduce all the main features of experiments. They also reproduce qualitatively the dispersion of the multiband model, giving better results for the intensity near wave vector $(π,π)$, in comparison with the experiments. In contrast to what was claimed in [Nat. Phys. \textbf{10}, 951 (2014)], we find that spin fluctuations play an essential role in the dynamics of the quasiparticle, and hence in both its weight and dispersion.

This claim is based on the definition of the ZRS in a different representation, in which the charge fluctuations at the Cu site have been eliminated by a canonical transformation. The correct interpretation of the results, based on known low-energy reduction procedures for a multiband model including 3d$^8$ and 3d$^{10}$ configurations of Cu, indicates that this overlap is near 94 \%.

We show that, when the spin-orbit coupling and the magnetic field are perpendicular, $\varphi$ and $δ$ are universal in an appropriate coordinate system. We use these geometric properties to explain the behavior of the Josephson current in junctions of two wires with different orientations of the magnetic field and/or the spin-orbit coupling. We show how to extract from there, the angle $θ$, hence providing a full description of the Majorana modes.

We study the heat current through two capacitively coupled quantum dots coupled in series with two conducting leads at different temperatures $T_L$ and $T_R$ in the spinless case (valid for a high applied magnetic field). Our results are also valid for the heat current through a single quantum dot with strongly ferromagnetic leads pointing in opposite directions (so that the electrons with given spin at the dot can jump only to one lead) or through a quantum dot with two degenerate levels with destructive quantum interference and high magnetic field. Although the charge current is always zero, the heat current is finite when the interdot Coulomb repulsion $U$ is taken into account due to many-body effects. We study the thermal conductance as a function of temperature and the dependence of the thermal current with the couplings to the leads, $T_L-T_R$, energy levels of the dots and $U$, including conditions for which an orbital Kondo regime takes place. When the energy levels of the dots are different, the device has rectifying properties for the thermal current. We find that the ratio between the thermal current resulting from a thermal bias $T_L>T_R$ and the one from $T_L<T_R$ is maximized for particular values of the energy levels, one above and the other below the Fermi level.

We study the transport through a molecular junction exhibiting interference effects. We show that these effects can still be observed in the presence of molecular vibrations if Coulomb repulsion is taken into account. In the Kondo regime, the conductance of the junction can be changed by several orders of magnitude by tuning the levels of the molecule, or displacing a contact between two atoms, from nearly perfect destructive interference to values of the order of 2e 2 /h expected in Kondo systems. We also show that this large conductance change is robust for reasonable temperatures and voltages for symmetric and asymmetric tunnel couplings between the source-drain electrodes and the molecular orbitals. This is relevant for the development of quantum interference effect transistors based on molecular junctions.

We study the low-temperature properties of the generalized Anderson impurity model in which two localized configurations, one with two doublets and the other with a triplet, are mixed by two degenerate conduction channels. By using the numerical renormalization group and the non-crossing approximation, we analyze the impurity entropy, its spectral density, and the equilibrium conductance for several values of the model parameters. Marked differences with respect to the conventional one-channel spin $s=1/2$ Anderson model, that can be traced as hallmarks of an impurity spin $S=1$, are found in the Kondo temperature, the width and position of the charge transfer peak, as well as the temperature dependence of the equilibrium conductance. Furthermore, we analyze the rich effects of a single-ion magnetic anisotropy $D$ on the Kondo behavior. In particular, as shown before, for large enough positive $D$ the system behaves as a "non-Landau" Fermi liquid that cannot be adiabatically connected to a non-interacting system turning off the interactions. For negative $D$ the Kondo effect is strongly suppressed. The model studied is suitable for a comprehensive analysis for recent investigations of a single Ni impurity embedded into an Au chain.

We consider a model proposed before for a time-reversal-invariant topological superconductor (TRITOPS) which contains a hopping term $t$, a chemical potential $μ$, an extended $s$-wave pairing $Δ$ and spin-orbit coupling $λ$. We show that for $|Δ|=|λ|$, $μ=t=0$, the model can be solved exactly defining new fermion operators involving nearest-neighbor sites. The many-body ground state is four-fold degenerate due to the existence of two zero-energy modes localized exactly at the first and the last site of the chain. These four states show entanglement in the sense that creating or annihilating a zero-energy mode at the first site is proportional to a similar operation at the last site. By continuity, this property should persist for general parameters. Using these results we correct some statements related with the so called "time-reversal anomaly". Addition of a small hopping term for a chain with an even number of sites breaks the degeneracy and the ground state becomes unique with an even number of particles. We also consider a small magnetic field applied to one end of the chain. We compare the many-body excitation energies and spin projection along the spin-orbit direction for both ends of the chains with numerical results %for a small chain obtaining good agreement.

The model consists of effective $t_{2g}$ orbitals of Cr in two square lattices, one above the other. The model is further reduced at low energies and two electrons per site, to an effective Kugel-Khomskii Hamiltonian that describes interacting spins 1 and pseudospins 1/2 at each site describing spin and orbitals degrees of freedom respectively. We solve this Hamiltonian at zero temperature using pseudospin bond operators and spin waves. Our results confirm a previous experimental and theoretical study that proposes spin ordering antiferromagnetic in the planes and ferromagnetic between planes, while pseudospins form vertical singlets, although the interplane separation is larger than the nearest-neighbor distance in the plane. We explain the physics behind this rather unexpected behavior.

The zero-bias anomaly at low temperatures, originated by the Kondo effect when an electric current flows through a system formed by a spin-$1/2$ quantum dot and two metallic contacts is theoretically investigated. In particular, we compare the width of this anomaly $2T_{\rm NE}$ with that of the Kondo resonance in the spectral density of states $2T_{K}^ρ$, obtained from a Fano fit of the corresponding curves and also with the Kondo temperature, $T_K^G$, defined from the temperature evolution of the equilibrium conductance $G(T)$. In contrast to $T_K^G$ and $2T_{K}^ρ$, we found that the scale $2T_{\rm NE}$ strongly depends on the asymmetry between the couplings of the quantum dot to the leads while the total hybridization is kept constant. While the three scales are of the same order of magnitude, $2T_{\rm NE}$ and $T_{K}^ρ$ agree only in the case of large asymmetry between the different tunneling couplings of the contacts and the quantum dot. On the other hand, for similar couplings, $T_{\rm NE}$ becomes larger than $T_{K}^ρ$, reaching the maximum deviation, of the order of $30\%$, for identical couplings. The fact that an additional parameter to $T_{\rm NE}$ is needed to characterize the Kondo effect, weakenig the universality properties, points that some caution should be taken in the usual identification in experiments of the low temperature width of the zero-bias anomaly with the Kondo scale. Furthermore, our results indicate that the ratios $T_{\rm NE}/T_K^G$ and $T_{K}^ρ/T_K^G$ depend on the range used for the fitting.

Using a combination of scanning tunneling spectroscopy and atomic lateral manipulation, we obtained a systematic variation of the Kondo temperature ($T_\mathrm K$) of Co atoms on Ag(111) as a function of the surface state contribution to the total density of states at the atom adsorption site ($ρ_s$). By sampling the $T_\mathrm K$ of a Co atom on positions where $ρ_s$ was spatially resolved beforehand, we obtain a nearly linear relationship between both magnitudes. We interpret the data on the basis of an Anderson model including orbital and spin degrees of freedom (SU(4)) in good agreement with the experimental findings. The fact that the onset of the surface band is near the Fermi level is crucial to lead to the observed linear behavior. In the light of this model, the quantitative analysis of the experimental data evidences that at least a quarter of the coupling of Co impurities with extended states takes place through the hybridization to surface states. This result is of fundamental relevance in the understanding of Kondo screening of magnetic impurities on noble metal surfaces, where bulk and surface electronic states coexist.

We report detailed thermal expansion and magnetostriction experiments on GdCoIn$_5$ and GdRhIn$_5$ single crystal samples that show a sudden change in the dilation at a field B$^\ast$ for temperatures below the Néel transition temperature TN. We present a first-principles model including crystal-field effects, dipolar and exchange interactions, and the dependence of the exchange couplings with lattice distortions in order to fully account for the magnetostriction and magnetic susceptibility data. The mean-field solution of the model shows that a transition between metastable states occurs at the field B$^\ast$. It also indicates that two degenerate phases coexist in the sample at temperatures below TN. This allows to explain the lack of observation, in high resolution x-ray experiments, of an orthorhombic distortion at the Néeel transition even though the magnetic structure breaks the tetragonal symmetry and the magnetoelastic coupling is significant. These conclusions could be extended to other tetragonal Gd-based compounds that present the same phenomenology.

The model hybridizes a spin doublet consisting in one hole at the $3d_{z^2}$ orbital of iron and two degenerate doublets corresponding to one hole either in the $3d_{xz}$ or in the $3d_{yz}$ orbital (called $π$ orbitals) with two degenerate Hund-rule triplets with one hole in the $3d_{z}$ orbital and another one in a $π$ orbital. We solve the model using a slave-boson mean-field approximation (SBMFA). For reasonable parameters we can describe very well the observed STS spectrum between sample bias -60 mV to 20 mV. For these parameters the Kondo stage takes place in two stages, with different energy scales $T_K^z > T_K^π$ corresponding to the Kondo temperatures related with the hopping of the $z^2$ and $π$ orbitals respectively. There is a strong interference between the different channels and the Kondo temperatures, particularly the lowest one is strongly reduced compared with the value in the absence of the competing channel.

In this work, we rigorously derive an effective one-band generalized $t\!-\!J$ model for T-CuO, based on orthogonalized Zhang-Rice singlets, and make an estimative calculation of its parameters, based on previous \textit{ab initio} calculations. By means of the self-consistent Born approximation, we then evaluate the spectral function and the quasiparticle dispersion for a single hole doped in antiferromagnetically ordered half-filled T-CuO. Our predictions show very good agreement with angle-resolved photoemission spectra and with theoretical multiband results. We conclude that a generalized $t\!-\!J$ model remains the minimal Hamiltonian for a correct description of single-hole dynamics in cuprates.

The approach is superior to alternative perturbative treatments. We compare in particular to the results of a simple interpolative perturbation approach.

We calculate the width $2Δ_{\text{CT}}$ and intensity of the charge-transfer peak (the one lying at the on-site energy $E_d$) in the impurity spectral density of states as a function of $E_d$ in the SU($N$) impurity Anderson model (IAM). We use the dynamical density-matrix renormalization group (DDMRG) and the noncrossing-approximation (NCA) for $N$=4, and a 1/$N$ variational approximation in the general case. In particular, while for $E_d \gg Δ$, where $Δ$ is the resonant level half-width, $Δ_{\text{CT}}=Δ$ as expected in the noninteracting case, for $-E_d \gg N Δ$ one has $Δ_{\text{CT}}=NΔ$. In the $N$=2 case, some effects of the variation of $% Δ_{\text{CT}}$ with $E_d$ were observed in the conductance through a quantum dot connected asymmetrically to conducting leads at finite bias [J. Könemann \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. B \textbf{73}, 033313 (2006)]. More dramatic effects are expected in similar experiments, that can be carried out in systems of two quantum dots, carbon nanotubes or other, realizing the SU(4) IAM.

Combining ab initio calculations and effective models derived from them, we discuss the electronic structure of oxygen doped gold chains when one Au atom is replaced by any transition-metal atom of the $3d$ series. The effect of O doping is to bring extended Au $5d_{xz}$ and $5d_{yz}$ states to the Fermi level, which together with the Au states of zero angular momentum projection, lead to three possible channels for the screening of the magnetism of the impurity. For most 3d impurities the expected physics is similar to that of the underscreened Kondo model, with singular Fermi liquid behavior. For Fe and Co under a tetragonal crystal field introduced by leads, the system might display a non-Fermi liquid behavior. Ni and Cu impurities are described by a $S = 1$ two channel Kondo model and an SU(4) impurity Anderson model in the intermediate valence regime, respectively. In both cases, the system is a Fermi liquid, but the conductance shows some observable differences with the ordinary SU(2) Anderson model.

These states as well as bulk states hybridize with magnetic impurities which can be placed above the surface. We calculate the characteristic low-temperature energy scale, the Kondo temperature $T_K$ of the impurity Anderson model, as the bottom of the conduction band $D_s$ crosses the Fermi energy $ε_F$. We find simple power laws $T_K \simeq |D_s-ε_F|^η$, where $η$ depends on the sign of $D_s-ε_F$, the ratio between surface and bulk hybridizations with the impurity $Δ_s/Δ_b$ and the ratio between on-site and Coulomb energy $E_d/U$ in the model.

We calculate the photoluminescence spectrum of a single semiconductor quantum dot strongly coupled to a continuum as a function of light frequency, gate voltage, and magnetic field. The spectrum is dominated by the recombination of several excitonic states which can be considered as quantum quenchs in which the many-body nature of the system is suddenly changed between initial and final states. This is associated with an Anderson orthogonality catastrophe with a power-law singularity at the threshold. We explain the main features observed experimentally in the region of stability of the trion $X^-$, the neutral exciton $X^0$ and the gate voltage induced transition between them.

We formulate a general theory to study the time-dependent charge and energy transport of an adiabatically driven interacting quantum dot in contact to a reservoir for arbitrary amplitudes of the driving potential. We study within this framework the Anderson impurity model with a local ac gate voltage. We show that the exact adiabatic quantum dynamics of this system is fully determined by the behavior of the charge susceptibility of the frozen problem. At $T=0$, we evaluate the dynamic response functions with the numerical renormalization group (NRG). The time-resolved heat production exhibits a pronounced feature described by an instantaneous Joule law characterized by an universal resistance quantum $R_0=h/(2 e^2)$ for each spin channel. We show that this law holds in non-interacting as well as in the interacting system and also when the system is spin-polarized. In addition, in the presence of a static magnetic field, the interplay between many-body interactions and spin polarization leads to a non-trivial energy exchange between electrons with different spin components.

The low temperature properties of single level molecular quantum dots including both, electron-electron and electron-vibration interactions, are theoretically investigated. The calculated differential conductance in the Kondo regime exhibits not only the zero bias anomaly but also side peaks located at bias voltages which coincide with multiples of the energy of vibronic mode $V \sim \hbarΩ/e$. We obtain that the evolution with temperature of the two main satellite conductance peaks follows the corresponding one of the Kondo peak when $\hbarΩ\gg k_B T_K$, being $ T_K$ the Kondo temperature, in agreement with recent transport measurements in molecular junctions. However, we find that this is no longer valid when $ \hbarΩ$ is of the order of a few times $k_B T_K$.

Using different techniques, and Fermi-liquid relationships, we calculate the variation with applied magnetic field (up to second order) of the zero-temperature equilibrium conductance through a quantum dot described by the impurity Anderson model. We focus on the strong-coupling limit $U \gg Δ$ where $U$ is the Coulomb repulsion and $Δ$ is half the resonant-level width, and consider several values of the dot level energy $E_d$, ranging from the Kondo regime $ε_F-E_d \gg Δ$ to the intermediate-valence regime $ε_F-E_d \sim Δ$, where $ε_F$ is the Fermi energy. We have mainly used density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and numerical renormalization group (NRG) combined with renormalized perturbation theory (RPT). Results for the dot occupancy and magnetic susceptibility from DMRG and NRG+RPT are compared with the corresponding Bethe ansatz results for $U \rightarrow \infty$, showing an excellent agreement once $E_d$ is renormalized by a constant Haldane shift. For $U < 3 Δ$ a simple perturbative approach in $U$ agrees very well with the other methods. The conductance decreases with applied magnetic field for dot occupancies $n_d \sim 1$ and increases for $n_d \sim 0.5$ or $n_d \sim 1.5$ regardless of the value of $U$. We also relate the energy scale for the magnetic-field dependence of the conductance with the width of low energy peak in the spectral density of the dot.

By means of a projector-operator formalism we derive an approximation based on a self consistent hybridization expansion to study the ground state properties of the Anderson Impurity model. We applied the approximation to the general case of finite Coulomb repulsion $U$, extending previous work with the same formalism in the infinite-$U$ case. The treatment provides a very accurate calculation of the ground state energy and their related zero temperature properties in the case in which $U$ is large enough, but still finite, as compared with the rest of energy scales involved in the model. The results for the valence of the impurity are compared with exact results that we obtain from equations derived using the Bethe ansatz and with a perturbative approach. The magnetization and magnetic susceptibility is also compared with Bethe ansatz results. In order to do this comparison, we also show how to regularize the Bethe ansatz integral equations necessary to calculate the impurity valence, for arbitrary values of the parameters.

By means of ab initio calculations we study the effect of O-doping of Au chains containing a nanocontact represented by a Ni atom as a magnetic impurity. In contrast to pure Au chains, we find that with a minimun O-doping the $5d_{xz,yz}$ states of Au are pushed up, crossing the Fermi level. We also find that for certain O configurations, the Ni atom has two holes in the degenerate $3d_{xz,yz}$ orbitals, forming a spin $S=1$ due to a large Hund interaction. The coupling between the $5d_{xz,yz}$ Au bands and the $3d_{xz,yz}$ of Ni states leads to a possible realization of a two-channel $S=1$ Kondo effect. While this kind of Kondo effect is commonly found in bulk systems, it is rarely observed in low dimensions. The estimated Kondo scale of the system lies within the present achievable experimental resolution in transport measurements. Another possible scenario for certain atomic configurations is that one of the holes resides in a $3d_{z^2}$ orbital, leading to a two-stage Kondo effect, the second one with SU(4) symmetry.
