Soft x-rays absorption and high-resolution powder x-ray diffraction study of superconducting CaxLa(1-x)Ba(1.75-x)La(0.25+x)Cu3Oy system
Abstract: We have studied the electronic structure of unoccupied states measured by O K-edge and Cu L-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), combined with crystal structure studied by high resolution powder x-ray diffraction (HRPXRD), of charge-compensated layered superconducting CaxLa(1-x)Ba(1.75-x)La(0.25+x)Cu3Oy (0<x<0.4, 6.4<y<7.3) cuprate. A detailed analysis shows that, apart from hole doping, chem… ▽ More

Anisotropic Exchange Interaction between Non-magnetic Europium Cations in Eu_2O_3
Abstract: The electronic structure of the cubic and (high pressure) hexagonal phases of Eu2O3 have been investigated by mean of full potential linearized augmented plane wave calculations, within the LDA+U method. For the cubic phase, the comparison between ferromagnetic and antiferromag- netic calculations shows that the exchange interaction is very weak and is therefore expected to have a negligible effec… ▽ More

Competing orders suppressed by disorder around a hidden quantum critical point in cuprate high Tc superconductors
Abstract: We report extensive muon spin rotation measurements on the lightly doped Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O6+y compound, which allows us to disentangle the effect of disorder, controlled by random Ca2+ substitution, from that of mere doping. A 3D phase diagram of lightly doped cuprates is accurately drawn, showing that a thermally activated antiferromagnetic phase competes with superconductivity around a quantum crit… ▽ More

Evidence of two distinct charge carriers in underdoped high Tc cuprates
Abstract: We present results on heavily underdoped Y_1-xCa_xBa_2Cu_3O_6+y which provide the evidence that the doping mechanism (cation substitution or oxygen loading) directly determines whether the corresponding injected mobile holes contribute to superconductivity or only to the normal metallic properties. We argue that this hole tagging calls for a subtler description of the correlated bands than the u… ▽ More

Nanoscopic coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity in YBa2Cu3O6+x detected by MuSR
Abstract: We performed zero and transverse field MuSR experiments on a large number of YBa2Cu3O6+x samples. We detect coexistence of antiferro-type (AF) short range magnetism with superconductivity below T_f~10 K in compositions 0.37<x<0.39. Most muons experience local AF fields, even when SQUID detects a full SC volume fraction, which points to a local minimal interference organization of short AF stripe… ▽ More

Search for non-Poissonian behavior in nuclear beta-decay
Abstract: We performed two independent counting experiments on a beta-emitting source of Sm151 by measuring the gamma-photon emitted in a fraction of the decays. For counting times ranging from 10**-3 to 5.12*10**4 seconds, our measurements show no evidence of deviations from Poissonian behavior and, in particular, no sign of 1/f noise. These measurements put strong limits on non-Poissonian components of… ▽ More
