We present a comprehensive Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) and Neutron Spin Echo Spectroscopy (NSE) study of the structural and dynamical aspects of the helimagnetic transition in Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si with $x$ = 0.30. In contrast to the sharp transition observed in the archetype chiral magnet MnSi, the transition in Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si is gradual and long-range helimagnetic ordering coexists with short-range correlations over a wide temperature range. The dynamics are more complex than in MnSi and involve long relaxation times with a stretched exponential relaxation which persists even under magnetic field. These results in conjunction with an analysis of the hierarchy of the relevant length scales show that the helimagnetic transition in Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si differs substantially from the transition in MnSi and question the validity of a universal approach to the helimagnetic transition in chiral magnets.

The spin excitations remain isotropic up to the high excitation energy, ${\hbarω}= 78$ meV. The excitations gradually become broad and damped above 40 meV. The damping parameter $γ$ reaches 110(16) meV at ${\hbarω} = 78$ meV, which is much larger than that for other metallic compounds, e.g., CaFe$_2$As$_2$ (24 meV), La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ ($52-72$ meV), and Mn$_{90}$Cu$_{10}$ (88 meV). In addition, the spin-wave dispersion shows a deviation from the relation $({\hbarω})^2 = c^2q^2 + Δ^2$ above 40 meV. The group velocity above this energy increases to 470(40) meVÅ, which is higher than that at the low energies, $c = 226(5)$ meVÅ. These results could suggest that the spin-wave excitations merge with the continuum of the individual particle-hole excitations at 40 meV.

Small angle neutron scattering measurements on a bulk single crystal of the doped chiral magnet Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si with $x$=0.3 reveal a pronounced effect of the magnetic history and cooling rates on the magnetic phase diagram. The extracted phase diagrams are qualitatively different for zero and field cooling and reveal a metastable skyrmion lattice phase outside the A-phase for the latter case. These thermodynamically metastable skyrmion lattice correlations coexist with the conical phase and can be enhanced by increasing the cooling rate. They appear in a wide region of the phase diagram at temperatures below the $A$-phase but also at fields considerably smaller or higher than the fields required to stabilize the A-phase.

We present a systematic study of the ac susceptibility of the chiral magnet Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si with $x$ = 0.30 covering four orders of magnitude in frequencies from 0.1 Hz to 1 kHz, with particular emphasis to the pronounced history dependence. Characteristic relaxation times ranging from a few milliseconds to tens of seconds are observed around the skyrmion lattice A-phase, the helical-to-conical transition and in a region above $T_C$. The distribution of relaxation frequencies around the A-phase is broad, asymmetric and originates from multiple coexisting relaxation processes. The pronounced dependence of the magnetic phase diagram on the magnetic history and cooling rates as well as the asymmetric frequency dependence and slow dynamics suggest more complicated physical phenomena in Fe$_{0.7}$Co$_{0.3}$Si than in other chiral magnets.

By performing the polarization analysis of the scattered photons, we disclose that the excitation between the eg orbitals and the excitations from t2g to eg exhibit distinct polarization dependence. The polarization dependence of the respective excitations is interpreted based on a phenomenological consideration of the symmetry of the RIXS process that yields a necessary condition for observing the excitations. In addition, we show that the orbital excitations are dispersionless within our experimental resolution.

The Mott gap excitation in undoped insulators is found to commonly show a larger dispersion along the [pi,pi] direction than the [pi,0] direction. On the other hand, the resonance condition displays material dependence. Upon hole doping, the dispersion of the Mott gap excitation becomes weaker and an intraband excitation appears as a continuum intensity below the gap at the same time. In the case of electron doping, the Mott gap excitation is prominent at the zone center and a dispersive intraband excitation is observed at finite momentum transfer.

In contrast to the case of a square lattice, momentum dependence of the Mott gap excitation of the ladder exhibits little change upon hole-doping, indicating the formation of hole pairs. Theoretical calculation based on a Hubbard model qualitatively explains this feature. In addition, experimental data shows intraband excitation as continuum intensity below the Mott gap and it appears at all the momentum transfers simultaneously. The intensity of the intraband excitation is proportional to the hole concentration of the ladder, which is consistent with optical conductivity measurements.

A doping effect in the strongly correlated electron systems has been observed for the first time. The scattering spectra show that a salient peak appears in low energies indicating the persistence of the Mott gap. At the same time, the energy gap is partly filled by doping holes and the energy of the spectral weight shifts toward lower energies. The excitation spectra show little change in the momentum space as is in undoped LaMnO3, but the scattering intensities in the low energy excitations of x=0.2 are anisotropic as well as temperature dependent, which indicates a reminiscence of the orbital nature.

We report results of inelastic neutron scattering measurements of phonon dispersions in optimally doped YBa2Cu3O6.95 and compare them with model calculations. The focus is on the in-plane oxygen bond-stretching phonon branches. The study of these modes is complicated by anticrossings with c-axis-polarized branches; such effects are interpreted through lattice-dynamical shell-model calculations. The in-plane anisotropy of the bond-stretching phonons was firmly ascertained from measurements on a detwinned sample. Studying the in-plane modes involving out-of-phase motion for the two Cu-O layers within a unit cell as well as those with in-phase motion was of great help for establishing a clear experimental picture. The measurements confirm that the in-plane oxygen bond-stretching phonon branches disperse steeply downwards from the zone center in both the a and the b directions indicating a strong electron-phonon coupling. For the b-axis-polarized bond-stretching phonons, there is an additional feature of considerable interest: a sharp local frequency minimum was found to develop on cooling from room temperature to T = 10 K at the wave vector q = 0.27 r.l.u..

Detailed neutron scattering measurements of YBa_2Cu_3O_6.95 found that the resonance peak and incommensurate magnetic scattering induced by superconductivity represent the same physical phenomenon: two dispersive branches that converge near 41 meV and the in-plane wave-vector q_af=(pi/a, pi/a) to form the resonance peak. One branch has a circular symmetry around q_af and quadratic downward dispersion from ~41 meV to the spin gap of 33+-1meV. The other, of lower intensity, disperses from ~41 meV to at least 55 meV. Our results exclude a quartet of vertical incommensurate rods in q-w space expected from spin waves produced by dynamical charge stripes as an origin of the observed incommensurate scattering in optimally-doped YBCO.

Unlike the hole-doped (p-type) superconducting cuprates where incommensurate magnetic fluctuations commonly exist, the n-type cuprate shows commensurate magnetic fluctuations at the tetragonal (1/2 1/2 0) reciprocal points both in the superconducting and in the normal state. A spin gap opens up when the n-type cuprate becomes superconducting, as in the optimally doped p-type La2-xSrxCuO4. The gap energy, however, increases gradually up to about 4 meV as T decreases from Tc to 2 K, which contrasts with the spin pseudogap behavior with a T-independent gap energy in the superconducting state of p-type cuprates.

Charge and orbital ordering behaviors in the half doped bi-layered compound LaSr2Mn2O7 have been studied by resonant and non-resonant X-ray scattering. Three different order parameters, which correspond to the A-type antiferromagnetic, a charge and an orbital ordered states, were observed by measuring the magnetostriction and the superlattice peaks characterized by wavevectors (1/2 1/2 0) and (1/4 1/4 0), respectively. The superlattice reflections indicating the charge and orbital ordered states were observed below 210 K. Both the intensities reach a maximum at 160 K on cooling and become very weak below 100 K. The peak width of the charge ordered state agrees with that of the orbital ordered state at all temperatures studied. These results indicate that both the states originate from a single phase and that the charge/orbital ordered islands with definite interfaces disperse in the A-type antiferromagnetic phase. The dimensionality of the charge/orbital ordered phase is discussed using this model.

For the x = 0.15 and 0.20, although the visibility of gap-like structure at T ~ Tc is lower compared to the x = 0.18 sample, the broad bump of kai"(w) appears at w ~ 5 meV,close to the spin-gap energy at base temperature, suggests the existence of the spin pseudo gap in the normal state.

We report results of inelastic neutron scattering measurements of phonon dispersions on a detwinned sample of YBaCu3O7 and compare them with model calculations. Plane oxygen bond stretching phonon branches disperse steeply downwards from the zone center in both the a and the b direction indicating a strong electron-phonon coupling. Half way to the zone boundary, the phonon peaks become ill-defined but we see no need to invoke unit cell doubling or charge stripe formation: lattice dynamical shell model calculations predict such behavior as a result of branch anticrossings. There were no observable superconductivity-related temperature effects on selected plane oxygen bond stretching modes measured on a twinned sample.

The effects of the application of a magnetic field on the diagonal stripe spin-glass phase is studied in lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (x=0.014 and 0.024). With increasing magnetic field, the magnetic elastic intensity at the diagonal incommensurate (DIC) positions (1,\pmε,0) decreases as opposed to the increase seen in superconducting samples. This diminution in intensity with increasing magnetic field originates from a spin reorientation transition, which is driven by the antisymmetric exchange term in the spin Hamiltonian. On the other hand, the transition temperature, the incommensurability, and the peak width of the diagonal incommensurate correlations are not changed with magnetic field. This result suggests that the magnetic correlations are determined primarily by the charge disproportionation and that the geometry of the diagonal incommensurate magnetism is also determined by effects, that is, stripe formation which are not purely magnetic in origin. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya antisymmetric exchange is nevertheless important in determining the local spin structure in the DIC stripe phase.

We argue that antisymmetric interactions must be taken into account to properly describe the critical dynamics in MnSi above T$_C$. The possibility of directly measuring the polarization dependent part of the dynamical susceptibility in a large class of compounds through polarised inelastic neutron-scattering is outlined as it can yield direct evidence for antisymmetric interactions like spin-orbit coupling in metals as well as in insulators.

It is found that the spin-glass phase in the coexistence region also shows a diagonal spin modulation as in the pure spin-glass phase in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (0.02$\le x\le$0.055). Below $x\sim$0.02 the diagonal stripe structure is the same as that in $x\sim$0.02 with a volume fraction almost proportional to hole concentration, suggesting that electronic phase separation of the doped holes occurs so that some regions with hole concentration $h_c\sim$0.02 and the rest with $h_c\sim$0 are formed. This result also indicates that the transition between the AF and spin-glass phase around $x$=0.02 is first order.

The 8 eV and 11 eV peaks are considered charge-transfer type excitations. On the other hand, theoretical calculations identify the 2.5 eV peak as an orbital excitation across the Mott gap, i.e. an electron excitation from the lower Hubbard band with the d3x2-r2 and d3y2-r2 orbital characters to the upper Hubbard band with the dy2-z2 and dz2-x2 ones. The observed weak dispersion and characteristic azimuthal angle dependence of this new type of excitations are well reproduced by the theory which includes orbital degeneracy and strong electron correlation.

Inelastic neutron scattering data from a twinned single-crystal of YBa2Cu3O6.95 are presented that show a distinct a-b plane anisotropy in the oxygen vibrations. The Cu-O bond-stretching type phonons are simultaneously observed along the a and b directions due to a 4 meV splitting arising from the orthorhombicity. The present results show the bond-stretching branch along b (parallel to the chain) has a continuous dispersion, while the branch along a is discontinuous, suggesting a possibility of short-range cell-doubling along a. Furthermore, the LO mode along a is split in en-ergy from its TO partner at non-zero q-vectors, while the b mode is not. These results imply strong anisotropy in the electronic screening and a one-dimensional character in underlying charge fluctuations.

Low-temperature spin dynamics of the double-layered perovskite La_2-2x_Sr_1+2x_Mn_2_O_7 (LSMO327) was systematically studied in a wide hole concentration range (0.3 <= x < 0.5). The spin-wave dispersion, which is almost perfectly 2D, has two branches due to a coupling between layers within a double-layer. Each branch exhibits a characteristic intensity oscillation along the out-of-plane direction. We found that the in-plane spin stiffness constant and the gap between the two branches strongly depend on x. By fitting to calculated dispersion relations and cross sections assuming Heisenberg models, we have obtained the in-plane (J_para), intra-bilayer (J_perp) and inter-bilayer (J') exchange interactions at each x. At x=0.30, J_para=-4meV and J_perp=-5meV, namely almost isotropic and ferromagnetic. Upon increasing x, J_perp rapidly approaches zero while |J_para| increases slightly, indicating an enhancement of the planar magnetic anisotropy. At x=0.48, J_para reaches -9meV, while J_perp turns to +1meV indicating an antiferromagnetic interaction. Such a drastic change of the exchange interactions can be ascribed to the change of the relative stability of the d_x^2-y^2 and d_3z^2-r^2 orbital states upon doping. However, a simple linear combination of the two states results in an orbital state with an orthorhombic symmetry, which is inconsistent with the tetragonal symmetry of the crystal structure. We thus propose that an ``orbital liquid'' state realizes in LSMO327, where the charge distribution symmetry is kept tetragonal around each Mn site.

The dynamic susceptibility X"(q,E) of this underdoped high-Tc superconductor (Tc = 17 K) is characterized by broad, incommensurate peaks. Here, the incommensurate wavevector is approximately 0.07 reciprocal lattice units at low T and E. The superconducting phase does not possess an observable gap in the spin excitation spectrum down to at least 2 meV. Scaling behavior is demonstrated for the q-integrate energy spectrum X"(E) with respect to (E/kT). This scaling establishes a connnection between the magnetic excitations of the compositions on either side of the insulator-superconductor boundary in the La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) phase diagram. We note a possible cross-over from an incommensurate to a commensurate response for E > 20 meV or T > 300 K.

The experimental results are analyzed using a formalism on resonant x-ray scattering and a model of the AFQ order. The magnetic and quadrupolar scatterings are explained by the model satisfactorily. A detailed investigation on the critical behavior of the AFQ ordering is also reported. The critical exponent $β$ is deduced to be 0.35, not far from the three-dimensional Heisenberg system. The structural phase diagram of the La1-xSrxMnO3 system in the compositional range 0.08 <= x <= 0.125 has been investigated by high-resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction techniques between 20-600 K. Recent studies have reported that there is an unusual rentrant-type phase transition in this range involving an abrupt change in lattice parameters but no change in the crystal symmetry, which remains orthorhombic Pbnm. The transition to the reentrant phase is from a ferromagnetic metallic to a ferromagnetic insulating phase with some unusual properties. Our results demonstrate that for samples with x =0.11-0.125 there exist two lower-symmetry structural regions having monoclinic and triclinic symmetry respectively. There is a sharp first-order transition from the monoclinic to the triclinic phase coinciding with the transition to the ferromagnetic insulating phase, and an abrupt crossover from the orthorhombic Pbnm region with a near-vertical phase boundary just below x = 0.11. A distinct first order metal-insulator (M-I) transition accompanied by a volume change was observed only in the antiferromagnetic ordered phase for 0.50<x<0.59. In this region, the M-I transition makes substantial effects to the thermal evolution of staggered moments. In the paramagnetic phase, the M-I transition becomes broad; both the electrical resistivity and the uniform magnetic susceptibility exhibit a broad maximum around the temperatures on the M-I transition-line extrapolated to the paramagnetic phase.

This establishes an intimate relation between the magnetism and the transport properties in the high-temperature copper oxide superconductors. Furthermore, it is found that the charge density per unit length estimated using a charge stripe model is almost constant throughout the phase diagram, even when the modulation rotates away by 45$^\circ$ at the superconducting boundary. However, at the lowest values for $x$ the density changes approaching 1 hole/Cu as in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_4$. Magnetic excitation spectra suggest that magnetic correlations change from incommensurate to commensurate at $ω\sim$7 meV and $T\sim$70 K, indicating a characteristic energy for the incommensurate structure of 6-7 meV.

The energy spectrum of incommensurate spin fluctuations in superconducting Sr-doped La2CuO4 has been studied by inelastic neutron scattering experiments. An energy gap in the spin excitation spectrum is observed in the superconducting state of optimally doped (x=0.15) and slightly overdoped (x=0.18) samples. At temperatures well below Tc, the incommensurate peaks diminish rapidly in intensity with decreasing energy below ~8meV and merge into the background below ~3.5meV for x=0.15 and ~4.5meV for x=0.18. For both samples, the energy spectrum of the q-integrated spin susceptibility, x"(w), exhibits an enhancement around 7meV, which is caused by a broadening in the momentum width of the incommensurate peaks. The gap-like structure in the energy spectrum and the enhancement of x"(w) survive at Tc. On the other hand, for both underdoped (x=0.10) and heavily overdoped (x=0.25) samples there is neither a clear energy gap nor an enhancement of x"(w) below Tc.

We report magnetic neutron scattering measurements of incommensurate magnetic order in a superconducting single crystal of La1.88Sr0.12CuO4. We find that the incommensurate wavevectors which describe the static magnetism do not lie along high-symmetry directions of the underlying CuO2 lattice. The positions of the elastic magnetic peaks are consistent with those found in excess-oxygen doped La2CuO4+y. This behavior differs from the precise magnetic order found in the low temperature tetragonal La1.6-xNd0.4SrxCuO4 material for which stripes of spin and charge have been observed. These observations have clear implications for any stripe model proposed to describe the static magnetism in orthorhombic La2CuO4-based superconductors.

Incommensurate spin modulation in Q is a characteristic feature, as it is in the under-doped YBa2Cu3O6.7 with a different incommensurability. A linear relationship between the incommensurability and Tc is proposed. Along with the discovery of the same incommensurability in under-doped La2-ySryCuO4, it may be a generic characteristic of the high-Tc oxide superconductor.

Systematic measurements of the magnetic susceptibility were performed on single crystals of lightly doped La2-xSrxCuO4 (x=0.03, 0.04 and 0.05). Systematic measurements of the magnetic susceptibility were performed on single crystals of lightly doped La2-xSrxCuO4 (x=0.03, 0.04 and 0.05). For all samples the temperature dependence of the in-plane magnetic susceptibility shows typical spin-glass features with spin-glass transition temperatures Tg of 6.3K, 5.5K and 5.0K for x=0.03, 0.04 and 0.05, respectively. The canonical spin-glass order parameter extracted from the in-plane susceptibility of all the samples follows a universal scaling curve. On the other hand, the out-of-plane magnetic susceptibility deviates from Curie law below a temperature Tdv, higher than Tg. Comparing with previous neutron scattering results with an instrumental energy resolution of 0.25 meV from Wakimoto et al., the x-dependence of Tdv is qualitatively the same as that of Tel, the temperature below which the elastic magnetic scattering develops around (pi, pi). Thus, a revised magnetic phase diagram in the lightly doped region of La2-xSrxCuO4 is proposed. The Curie constants calculated from the in-plane susceptibility are independent of the Sr concentration. On the basis of the cluster spin-glass model, this fact might reflect an inhomogeneous distribution of doped holes in the CuO2 plane, such as in a stripe structure.

Much weaker coupling between orbital degrees of freedom and lattice in 4f electron systems than in 3d compounds provides an ideal platform to study orbital interactions originated from electronic mechanisms.

We report the results of an extensive elastic neutron scattering study of the incommensurate (IC) static spin correlations in La1.95Sr0.05CuO4 which is an insulating spin glass at low temperatures. The present neutron scattering experiments on the same x=0.05 crystal employ a narrower instrumental Q-resolution and thereby have revealed that the crystal has only two orthorhombic twins at low temperatures with relative populations of 2:1. We find that, in a single twin, only two satellites are observed at (1, +/-0.064, L)(ortho) and (0, 1+/-0.064, L)(ortho), that is, the modulation vector is only along the orthorhombic b*-axis. This demonstrates unambiguously that La1.95Sr0.05CuO4 has a one-dimensional static diagonal spin modulation at low temperatures, consistent with certain stripe models. We have also reexamined the x=0.04 crystal that previously was reported to show a single commensurate peak. By mounting the sample in the (H, K, 0) zone, we have discovered that the x=0.04 sample in fact has the same IC structure as the $x=0.05$ sample. The incommensurability parameter d for x=0.04 and 0.05, where d is the distance from (1/2, 1/2) in tetragonal reciprocal lattice units, follows the linear relation d=x. These results demonstrate that the insulator to superconductor transition in the under doped regime (0.05 </= x </= 0.06) in La2-xSrxCuO4 is coincident with a transition from diagonal to collinear static stripes at low temperatures thereby evincing the intimate coupling between the one dimensional spin density modulation and the superconductivity.

A spin-glass compound, La$_{1.98}$Sr$_{0.02}$CuO$_4$, shows quasi-three-dimensional magnetic ordering below $\sim$40 K. A remarkable feature is that the magnetic correlation length along the orthorhombic $a\rm_{ortho}$ axis is much longer than that along the $b\rm_{ortho}$ axis, suggesting that the spin structure is closely related to the diagonal stripe structure. The spin-glass state can be expressed as a random freezing of quasi-three-dimensional spin clusters with anisotropic spin correlations ($ξ'_a\sim160$ Å, $ξ'_b\sim25$ Å, and $ξ'_c\sim4.7$ Åat 1.6 K). The new magnetic state is important as an intermediate phase between the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic ordered phase in La$_2$CuO$_4$ and the incommensurate phase in La$_{1.95}$Sr$_{0.05}$CuO$_4$ in which the positions of the incommensurate peaks are rotated by 45$^\circ$ in reciprocal space about ($π$,$π$) from those observed in the superconducting La$_2$CuO$_4$ compounds.

It was discovered in La1-xSrxMnO3(x~1/8) that a field induced phase transition occurs from a ferromagnetic metal(FM) phase to a ferromagnetic insulator (FI) phase. The magnetization shows a sharp jump at the transition field accompanying with a remarkable increase of magnetoresistance. Striction measurements clarified that this transition is associated with the structural change from a Jahn-Teller(JT) distorted orthorhombic phase to a pseudo cubic phase. These results evidently show that the FI phase with a pseudo cubic symmetry is more stable in high fields than the FM phase due to the double exchange interaction. The driving force of this transition is explained by the enhancement of the ferromagnetic superexchange interaction induced by an antiferromagnetic type orbital ordering in the pseudo cubic phase, which was recently found in the anomalous X-ray scattering experiments.

We have carried out a neutron scattering study of the instantaneous spin-spin correlations in La2CuO4 (T_N = 325 K) over the temperature range 337 K to 824 K. Incident neutron energies varying from 14.7 meV to 115 meV have been employed in order to guarantee that the energy integration is carried out properly. The results so-obtained for the spin correlation length as a function of temperature when expressed in reduced units agree quantitatively both with previous results for the two dimensional (2D) tetragonal material Sr2CuO2Cl2 and with quantum Monte Carlo results for the nearest neighbor square lattice S=1/2 Heisenberg model. All of the experimental and numerical results for the correlation length are well described without any adjustable parameters by the behavior predicted for the quantum non-linear sigma model in the low temperature renormalized classical regime. The amplitude, on the other hand, deviates subtly from the predicted low temperature behavior. These results are discussed in the context of recent theory for the 2D quantum Heisenberg model.
