An unresolved issue in the commonly used Pb(Zr1-xTix)O3 (PZT) ceramics is understanding the intrinsic piezoelectric behaviors of its crystal around the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). Here, we demonstrate a novel approach to grow c-axis oriented PZT around MPB on stainless steel SUS430, allowing us to estimate the intrinsic piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties of PZT along its polar axis. The piezoelectric coefficient d33 and spontaneous polarization Ps were found to be 46.4 +- 4.4 pm/V, 88.7+-4.6 uC/cm2, respectively, for x = 0.47 close to MPB. These values align well with the predicted values of d33 = 50 - 55 pC/N and Ps=79 uC/cm2 at room temperature from the first-principles-derived approach. The obtained d33 is 4 times smaller than that of its ceramics, indicating that the large piezoelectric response in the PZT ceramics around MPB is primarily driven by extrinsic effects rather than intrinsic ones. In the technical application of PZT films, achieving a substantial piezoelectric response requires careful consideration of these extrinsic effects.

Using machine learning (ML) techniques to predict material properties is a crucial research topic. These properties depend on numerical data and semantic factors. Due to the limitations of small-sample datasets, existing methods typically adopt ML algorithms to regress numerical properties or transfer other pre-trained knowledge graphs (KGs) to the material. However, these methods cannot simultaneously handle semantic and numerical information. In this paper, we propose a numerical reasoning method for material KGs (NR-KG), which constructs a cross-modal KG using semantic nodes and numerical proxy nodes. It captures both types of information by projecting KG into a canonical KG and utilizes a graph neural network to predict material properties. In this process, a novel projection prediction loss is proposed to extract semantic features from numerical information. NR-KG facilitates end-to-end processing of cross-modal data, mining relationships and cross-modal information in small-sample datasets, and fully utilizes valuable experimental data to enhance material prediction. We further propose two new High-Entropy Alloys (HEA) property datasets with semantic descriptions. NR-KG outperforms state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods, achieving relative improvements of 25.9% and 16.1% on two material datasets. Besides, NR-KG surpasses SOTA methods on two public physical chemistry molecular datasets, showing improvements of 22.2% and 54.3%, highlighting its potential application and generalizability. We hope the proposed datasets, algorithms, and pre-trained models can facilitate the communities of KG and AI for materials.

The co-existence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity becomes possible through unconventional pairing in the superconducting state. Such materials are exceedingly rare in solid-state systems but are promising platforms to explore topological phases, such as Majorana bound states. Theoretical investigations date back to the late 1950s, but only a few systems have so far been experimentally identified as potential hosts. Here, we show that atomically-thin niobium diselenide (NbSe$_2$) intercalated with dilute cobalt atoms spontaneously displays ferromagnetism below the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$). We elucidate the origin of this phase by constructing a magnetic tunnel junction that consists of cobalt and cobalt-doped niobium diselenide (Co-NbSe$_2$) as the two ferromagnetic electrodes, with an ultra-thin boron nitride as the tunnelling barrier. At a temperature well below $T_c$, the tunnelling magnetoresistance shows a bistable state, suggesting a ferromagnetic order in Co-NbSe$_2$. We propose a RKKY exchange coupling mechanism based on the spin-triplet superconducting order parameter to mediate such ferromagnetism. We further perform non-local lateral spin valve measurements to confirm the origin of the ferromagnetism. The observation of Hanle precession signals show spin diffusion length up to micrometres below Tc, demonstrating an intrinsic spin-triplet nature in superconducting NbSe$_2$. Our discovery of superconductivity-mediated ferromagnetism opens the door to an alternative design of ferromagnetic superconductors

Abundant chemical diversity and structural tunability make organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) a rich ore for ferroelectrics. However, compared with their inorganic counterparts such as BaTiO$_3$, their ferroelectric key properties, including large spontaneous polarization ($P_s$), low coercive field ($E_c$), and strong second harmonic generation (SHG) response, have long been great challenges, which hinder their commercial applications. Here, a quasi-one-dimensional OIHP DMAGeI$_3$ (DMA=Dimethylamine) is reported, with notable ferroelectric attributes at room temperature: a large $P_s$ of 24.14 $μ$C/cm$^2$ (on a par with BaTiO$_3$), a low $E_c$ below 2.2 kV/cm, and the strongest SHG intensity in OIHP family (about 12 times of KH$_2$PO$_4$ (KDP)). Revealed by the first-principles calculations, its large $P_s$ originates from the synergistic effects of the stereochemically active $4s^2$ lone pair of Ge$^{2+}$ and the ordering of organic cations, and its low kinetic energy barrier of small DMA cations results in a low $E_c$. Our work brings the comprehensive ferroelectric performances of OIHPs to a comparable level with commercial inorganic ferroelectric perovskites.

Localized electrons subject to applied magnetic fields can restart to propagate freely through the lattice in delocalized magnetic Bloch states (MBSs) when the lattice periodicity is commensurate with the magnetic length. Twisted graphene superlattices with moiré wavelength tunability enable experimental access to the unique delocalization in a controllable fashion. Here we report the observation and characterization of high-temperature Brown-Zak (BZ) oscillations which come in two types, 1/B and B periodicity, originating from the generation of integer and fractional MBSs, in the twisted bilayer and trilayer graphene superlattices, respectively. Coexisting periodic-in-1/B oscillations assigned to different moiré wavelengths, are dramatically observed in small-angle twisted bilayer graphene, which may arise from angle-disorder-induced in-plane heteromoiré superlattices. Moreover, the vertical stacking of heteromoiré supercells in double-twisted trilayer graphene results in a mega-sized superlattice. The exotic superlattice contributes to the periodic-in-B oscillation and dominates the magnetic Bloch transport.

Interlayer transport in high-$T_C$ cuprates is mediated by superconducting tunneling across the CuO$_2$ planes. For this reason, the terahertz frequency optical response is dominated by one or more Josephson plasma resonances and becomes highly nonlinear at fields for which the tunneling supercurrents approach their critical value, $I_C$. These large terahertz nonlinearities are in fact a hallmark of superconducting transport. Surprisingly, however, they have been documented in La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ also above $T_C$ for doping values near $x=1/8$, and interpreted as an indication of superfluidity in the stripe phase. Here, Electric Field Induced Second Harmonic (EFISH) is used to study the dynamics of time-dependent interlayer voltages when La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ is driven with large-amplitude terahertz pulses, in search of other characteristic signatures of Josephson tunnelling in the normal state. We show that this method is sensitive to the voltage anomalies associated with 2$π$ Josephson phase slips, which near $x=1/8$ are observed both below and above $T_C$. These results document a new regime of nonlinear transport that shares features of fluctuating stripes and superconducting phase dynamics.

Here, we report the phase diagram and phase transition of CBN solid solution that are still lack of understanding. We show that CBN can be stably formed within a solid solution range of 0.19 <= x <= 0.32. In sharp contrast to SBN that shows crossover from ferroelectric to relaxor around x~ 0.5, CBN merely exhibits a well-defined first-order phase transition in the whole solid solution range but shows polarization precursor dynamics before transition into the ferroelectric phase. We found that the local polarization exponentially grows with temperature from the Burns temperature TB toward Tc. The local polarization was estimated to grow up to several tens pC/cm-^2 before transition into the ferroelectric phase. Moreover, we found that the substitution of Ca for Ba lowers Tc and TB and there is a linear correlation between Tc and the length of polar c-axis, which can be attributed to the chemical pressure effects. These findings may provide a deep insight into the nature of phase transition in the TTB structure oxides.

In this paper the structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties of langasite compound Pb$_3$TeMn$_3$P$_2$O$_{14}$ have been investigated as a candidate of short-range magnetic correlations driven development of dielectric anomaly above N$\acute{e}$el temperature of ($T_N$=) 7 K. Presence of dielectric anomaly, structural phase transition and a short range magnetic correlation at the same temperature (at around 100 K) as well as magnetic field dependent capacitance clearly indicate that this compound shows magnetodielectric coupling at around 100 K. In addition, unusual behaviour is observed in two polarization loop at room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature, where coercive field at liquid nitrogen temperature is larger than room temperature. Further, $P$-$E$ loop at liquid nitrogen temperature with different frequencies also affirm that the coercive field and remnant polarization are firstly reduced (but very small value) but when frequency is further increased to 15 Hz and 100 Hz, both of them are enhanced. Therefore, a transition is observed at around 15 Hz in frequency dependent $P_r$ and $E_C$ curve, which may be usually attributed to the generalized pinning and depinning of the dislocation arrays to polarization.

In case of Pb$_3$TeCo$_3$P$_2$O$_{14}$, mixing of both Pb 6$s$ with Pb 6$p$ and O 2$p$ help the lone pair to be stereochemically active. This stereochemically active lone pair brings a large structural distortion within the unit cell and creates a polar geometry, while Ba$_3$TeCo$_3$P$_2$O$_{14}$ compound remains in a nonpolar structure due to the absence of any such effect. Consequently, polarization measurement under varying electric field confirms room temperature ferroelectricity for Pb$_3$TeCo$_3$P$_2$O$_{14}$, which was not the case of Ba$_3$TeCo$_3$P$_2$O$_{14}$. Detailed study was carried out to understand the microscopic mechanism of ferroelectricity which revealed the exciting underlying activity of poler TeO$_6$ octahedral unit as well as Pb-hexagon.

We have investigated the structural, magnetic and dielectric properties of Pb-based langasite compound Pb$_3$TeMn$_3$P$_2$O$_{14}$ both experimentally and theoretically in the light of metal-oxygen covalency, and the consequent generation of multiferroicity. It is known that large covalency between Pb 6$p$ and O 2$p$ plays instrumental role behind stereochemical lone pair activity of Pb. The same happens here but a subtle structural phase transition above room temperature changes the degree of such lone pair activity and the system becomes ferroelectric below 310 K. Interestingly, this structural change also modulates the charge densities on different constituent atoms and consequently the overall magnetic response of the system while maintaining global paramagnetism behavior of the compound intact. This single origin of modulation in polarity and paramagnetism inherently connects both the functionalities and the system exhibits mutiferroicity at room temperature.

For the first time, the dielectric response of a BaTiO3 thin film under an AC electric field is investigated using time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Ti K-edge to clarify correlated contributions of each constituent atom on the electronic states. Intensities of the pre-edge eg peak and shoulder structure just below the main edge increase with an increase in the amplitude of the applied electric field, whereas that of the main peak decreases in an opposite manner. Based on the multiple scattering theory, the increase and decrease of the eg and main peaks are simulated for different Ti off-center displacements. Our results indicate that these spectral features reflect the inter- and intra-atomic hybridization of Ti 3d with O 2p and Ti 4p, respectively. In contrast, the shoulder structure is not affected by changes in the Ti off-center displacement but is susceptible to the effect of the corner site Ba ions. This is the first experimental verification of the dynamic electronic contribution of Ba to polarization reversal.

Photo-induced phase transitions (PIPTs) provide an ultrafast, energy-efficient way for precisely manipulating the topological properties of transition-metal ditellurides, and can be used to stabilize a topological phase in an otherwise semiconducting material. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that the PIPT in monolayer MoTe$_2$ from the semiconducting 2H phase to the topological 1T$'$ phase can be triggered purely by electronic excitations that soften multiple lattice vibrational modes. These softenings, driven by a Peierls-like mechanism within the conduction bands, lead to structural symmetry breaking within sub-picosecond timescales, which is shorter than the timescale of a thermally driven phase transition. The transition is predicted to be triggered by photons with energies over $1.96$\,eV, with an associated excited carrier density of $3.4\times10^{14}$\,cm$^{-2}$, which enables a controllable phase transformation by varying the laser wavelength. Our results provide insight into the underlying physics of the phase transition in 2D transition-metal ditellurides, and show an ultrafast phase transition mechanism for manipulation of the topological properties of 2D systems.

Optical excitation of stripe-ordered La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ has been shown to transiently enhance superconducting tunneling between the CuO$_2$ planes. This effect was revealed by a blue-shift, or by the appearance of a Josephson Plasma Resonance in the terahertz-frequency optical properties. Here, we show that this photo-induced state can be strengthened by the application of high external magnetic fields oriented along the c-axis. For a 7-Tesla field, we observe up to a ten-fold enhancement in the transient interlayer phase correlation length, accompanied by a two-fold increase in the relaxation time of the photo-induced state. These observations are highly surprising, since static magnetic fields suppress interlayer Josephson tunneling and stabilize stripe order at equilibrium. We interpret our data as an indication that optically-enhanced interlayer coupling in La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ does not originate from a simple optical melting of stripes, as previously hypothesized. Rather, we speculate that the photo-induced state may emerge from activated tunneling between optically-excited stripes in adjacent planes.

The family of materials defined as ZrSiX (X = S, Se, Te) has been established as Dirac node-line semimetals, and subsequent study is urgent to exploit the promising application of unusual magnetoresistance property. In this work, we systematically investigated the anisotropic magnetoresistance in the newly-discovered Dirac node-line material ZrSiSe. By applying a magnetic field of 3 T by a vector field, the three-dimensional (3D) magnetoresistance (MR) shows strong anisotropy. The MR ratio of maximum and minimum directions can reach 7 at 3 T and keeps increasing at the higher magnetic field. The anisotropic MR forms a butterfly-shaped curve, which indicates the quasi-2D electronic structures. This is further confirmed by the angular-dependent Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations. The first-principles calculations establish the quasi-2D tubular-shaped Fermi surface near the X point in the Brillouin zone. Our findings shed light on the 3D mapping of MR and the potential applications in magnetic sensors based on ZrSiSe Dirac materials.

However, the subtle inter-relation of these phases remains poorly understood, and in some cases even the existence of short-range correlations for superconducting compositions is uncertain. In such circumstances, ultrafast experiments can provide new insights, by tracking the relaxation kinetics following excitation at frequencies related to the broken symmetry state. Here, we investigate the transient terahertz conductivity of BaPb1-xBixO3 - a material for which superconductivity is adjacent to a competing CDW phase - after optical excitation tuned to the CDW absorption band. In insulating BaBiO3 we observed an increase in conductivity and a subsequent relaxation, which are consistent with quasiparticles injection across a rigid semiconducting gap. In the doped compound BaPb0.72Bi0.28O3 (superconducting below Tc=7K), a similar response was also found immediately above Tc. This observation evidences the presence of a robust gap up to T=40 K, which is presumably associated with short-range CDW correlations. A qualitatively different behaviour was observed in the same material fo T>40 K. Here, the photo-conductivity was dominated by an enhancement in carrier mobility at constant density, suggestive of melting of the CDW correlations rather than excitation across an optical gap. The relaxation displayed a temperature dependent, Arrhenius-like kinetics, suggestive of the crossing of a free-energy barrier between two phases. These results support the existence of short-range CDW correlations above Tc in underdoped BaPb1-xBixO3, and provide new information on the dynamical interplay between superconductivity and charge order.

Topological phases of matter exhibit phase transitions between distinct topological classes. These phase transitions are exotic in that they do not fall within the traditional Ginzburg-Landau paradigm but are instead associated with changes in bulk topological invariants and associated topological surface states. In the case of a Weyl semimetal this phase transition is particularly unusual because it involves the creation of bulk chiral charges and the nucleation of topological Fermi arcs. Here we image a topological phase transition to a Weyl semimetal in Mo$_x$W$_{1-x}$Te$_2$ with changing composition $x$. Using pump-probe ultrafast angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (pump-probe ARPES), we directly observe the nucleation of a topological Fermi arc at $x_c \sim 7\%$, showing the critical point of a topological Weyl phase transition. For Mo dopings $x < x_c$, we observe no Fermi arc, while for $x > x_c$, the Fermi arc gradually extends as the bulk Weyl points separate. Our results demonstrate for the first time the creation of magnetic monopoles in momentum space. Our work opens the way to manipulating chiral charge and topological Fermi arcs in Weyl semimetals for transport experiments and device applications.

Polycrystals of CaxBa1-xNb2O6(CBN) tungsten bronze type oxides have been prepared and their structural, dielectric, and thermal properties have been investigated. It was found that CBN alloys with ferroelectric tetragonal tungsten bronze structure were only available in a composition range of 0.19 <= x <= 0.32. It was also showed that CBN can be classified as a ferroelectric with a first-order thermal phase transition showing polarization precursor dynamics before transition into the ferroelectric phase, in sharp contrast to an isostructural alloy SrxBa1-xNb2O6(SBN) that shows typical relaxor behaviors. The local polarizations were found to grow exponentially within the paraelectric mother phase in a large temperature range of Tc<T<Tc+ 88~140 K on cooling. Furthermore, a phase diagram was established for CBN ferroelectric alloys. These findings may get an insight into the true nature of ferroelectric phase transition in this potential electro-optic material.

We here report the substitution effects of the smaller Ca for the bulky Ba in (Ba1-xCax)(Ti1-yZry)O3 perovskite oxides for two systems (Ba1-xCax)TiO3 with y=0 and (Ba1-xCax)(Ti0.9Zr0.1)O3 with y=0.1. Ca off-centering was found to play a critical role in stabilizing the ferroelectric phase and tuning the polarization states in both systems. It was demonstrated that the atomic displacement due to Ca off-centering in the bulky Ba-site in the perovskite structure provides an effective approach to compensate the reduction of ferroelectricity due to the chemical pressure, which allows to keep the Curie point nearly constant in the (Ba1-xCax)TiO3 system and increase the Curie point in the (Ba1-xCax)(Ti0.9Zr0.1)O3 system. It was commonly observed that the Ca off-centering effects lead to the shift of the R-O and O-T phase transitions toward lower temperatures and the ferroelectric stability of the T-phase, resulting in the occurrence of quantum phase transitions with interesting physics phenomena at low temperatures in the (Ba1-xCax)TiO3 system and the great enhancement of electromechanical coupling effects around room temperature in the (Ba1-xCax)(Ti0.9Zr0.1)O3 system over a wide composition range of the Ca-concentration. These finding may be of great interest for the design of the green piezoelectric materials.

Elastic properties of materials are an important factor in their integration in applications. Chemical vapor deposited (CVD) monolayer semiconductors are proposed as key components in industrial-scale flexible devices and building blocks of 2D van der Waals heterostructures. However, their mechanical and elastic properties have not been fully characterized. Here we report high 2D elastic moduli of CVD monolayer MoS2 and WS2 (~ 170 N/m), which is very close to the value of exfoliated MoS2 monolayers and almost half the value of the strongest material, graphene. The 2D moduli of their bilayer heterostructures are lower than the sum of 2D modulus of each layer, but comparable to the corresponding bilayer homostructure, implying similar interactions between the hetero monolayers as between homo monolayers. These results not only provide deep insight to understanding interlayer interactions in 2D van der Waals structures, but also potentially allow engineering of their elastic properties as desired.

Electrons in graphene are described by relativistic Dirac-Weyl spinors with a two-component pseudospin1-12. The unique pseudospin structure of Dirac electrons leads to emerging phenomena such as the massless Dirac cone2, anomalous quantum Hall effect2, 3, and Klein tunneling4, 5 in graphene. The capability to manipulate electron pseudospin is highly desirable for novel graphene electronics, and it requires precise control to differentiate the two graphene sub-lattices at atomic level. Graphene/boron nitride (graphene/BN) Moire superlattice, where a fast sub-lattice oscillation due to B-N atoms is superimposed on the slow Moire period, provides an attractive approach to engineer the electron pseudospin in graphene13-18. This unusual Moire superlattice leads to a spinor potential with unusual hybridization of electron pseudospins, which can be probed directly through infrared spectroscopy because optical transitions are very sensitive to excited state wavefunctions. Here, we perform micro-infrared spectroscopy on graphene/BN heterostructure and demonstrate that the Moire superlattice potential is dominated by a pseudospin-mixing component analogous to a spatially varying pseudomagnetic field. In addition, we show that the spinor potential depends sensitively on the gate-induced carrier concentration in graphene, indicating a strong renormalization of the spinor potential from electron-electron interactions. Our study offers deeper understanding of graphene pseudospin structure under spinor Moire potential, as well as exciting opportunities to control pseudospin in two-dimensional heterostructures for novel electronic and photonic nanodevices.

The resistance between the conductive AFM tip and the bottom electrode separated by a monolayer MoS2 is reversibly reduced by up to 4 orders of magnitude, which is attributed to enhanced quantum tunneling when the monolayer is compressed by the tip force. Under the WKB approximation, the experimental data is quantitatively explained by using the metal-insulator-metal tunneling diode model. As an ideal tunneling medium, the defect-free, nanometer-thick MoS2 monolayer can serve as the active layer for non-impacting nano-electro-mechanical switches.

Its anomalous dielectric behavior over a broad temperature range results from the reorientation of domains in the crystal. A physic picture of the structure evolution in relaxor is also revealed. It is found that nanometric ferroelectric domains (gennerally called as polar nano-region (PNR)) interact cooperatively to form micrometric domain. Such multiscale inhomogeneities of domain structure in addition to the well-known inhomogeneities of chemical composition and local symmetry are considered to play a crucial role in producing the enigmatic phenomena in relaxor system.

It is shown that small substitution of Ag with Li gives rise to an orthorhombic-rhombohedral structural transformation in ABO3-perovskite silver niobate at room temperature. We report that an energetic plasma process is extremely effective in enlarging the unit cell volume and ferroelectric distortion of the ferroelectric oxides, resulting in a significant increase in its Tc. We demonstrate experimentally that c-axis oriented BaTiO3 films can be deposited directly on quartz glass and Si substrates using such a process and that the material shows an approximately 5% expansion of its unit cell volume and approximately 4 times the ferroelectric tetragonal distortion of the bulk crystals. Such a frozen negative pressure results in a Tc value that is approximately 580 K higher than that of bulk single crystals, providing a wide range of operating temperatures for the devices. The present results suggest an approach to producing ferroelectric oxides with unique properties that might be extended to ferromagnetic or superconductor oxides and demonstrate a route to a lead-free ferroelectric oxide for capacitive, ferroelectric memory, and electro-optical devices.

A polarization direction of the incident laser was chosen along [110] in cubic configuration in order to eliminate strong scattering components around 45 cm-1, which always smeared the low-frequency spectra of PMN. The soft mode frequency omega_s (=\sqrt{omega_0^2-gamma^2}) softens around 200 K, where omega_0 and gamma are a harmonic frequency and a damping constant, respectively.
