Abstract:
We report single crystal growth of the series of CeTAl$_3$ compounds with T = Cu, Ag, Au, Pd and Pt by means of optical float zoning. High crystalline quality was confirmed in a thorough characterization process. With the exception of CeAgAl$_3$, all compounds crystallize in the non-centrosymmetric tetragonal BaNiSn$_{3}$ structure (space group: I4mm, No. 107), whereas CeAgAl$_3$ adopts the relate…

107), whereas CeAgAl$_3$ adopts the related orthorhombic PbSbO$_2$Cl structure (Cmcm, No. 63). An attempt to grow CeNiAl$_3$ resulted in the composition CeNi$_2$Al$_5$. Low temperature resistivity measurements down to $\sim$0.1K did not reveal evidence suggestive of magnetic order in CePtAl$_3$ and CePdAl$_3$. In contrast, CeAuAl$_3$, CeCuAl$_3$ and CeAgAl$_3$ display signatures of magnetic transitions at 1.3K, 2.1K and 3.2K, respectively. This is consistent with previous reports of antiferromagnetic order in CeAuAl$_3$, and CeCuAl$_3$ as well as ferromagnetism in CeAgAl$_3$, respectively.

Abstract:
New equiatomic nickel germanides MgNiGe, SrNiGe, and BaNiGe have been synthesized from the elements in sealed tantalum tubes using a high-frequency furnace. The compounds were investigated by X-ray diffraction both on powders and single crystals. MgNiGe crystallizes with TiNiSi structure type, space group Pnma, Z = 4, a = 6.4742(2) A, b = 4.0716(1) A, c = 6.9426(2) A, wR2 = 0.033, 305 F2 values, 2…

The compounds were investigated by X-ray diffraction both on powders and single crystals. SrNiGe and BaNiGe are isotypic and crystallize with anti-SnFCl structure type (Z = 4, Pnma) with a = 5.727(1) A, b = 4.174(1) A, c = 11.400(3) A, wR2 = 0.078, 354 F2 values, 20 variable parameters for SrNiGe and a = 5.969(4) A, b = 4.195(1) A, c = 11.993(5) A, wR2 = 0.048, 393 F2 values, 20 variable parameters for BaNiGe. The increase of the cation size leads to a reduction of the dimensionality of [NiGe] polyanions. In the MgNiGe structure the nickel and germanium atoms build a three-dimensional 3D-[NiGe] network with magnesium atoms in the channels. In contrast, in Sr(Ba)NiGe one-dimensional 1D-[NiGe] ribbons, running parallel to the b-axis, are separated by strontium/barium atoms. The crystal chemistry and chemical bonding in equiatomic alkaline-earth nickel germanides AeNiGe (Ae = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) is discussed. The experimental results are reconciled with electronic structure calculations performed using the tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital (TB-LMTO-ASA) method.

The finding of superconductivity in Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 put the attention on the investigation of compounds that crystallize with ThCr2Si2 structure type such as AT2X2 (A = alkali/ alkaline earth/ rare earth element; T = transition metal and X = element of the 13-15th group) . In this context the silicides CaFe2Si2, CaFe0.68(6)Rh1.32(6)Si2, CaRh2Si2 and SrCo2Si2 have been synthesized by melting mixtures of the elements in an arc-furnace under an argon atmosphere. Single crystals were obtained by special heat treatment in welded niobium ampoules. The compounds were investigated by means of powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction. All compounds crystallize in the ThCr2Si2-type structure with space group I4/mmm (No. 139): a = 3.939(1) Å, c = 10.185(1) Å, R1 = 0.045, 85 F2 values, 8 variable parameters for CaFe2Si2 ; a = 4.0612(3) Å, c = 9.9373(9) Å, R1 = 0.030, 90 F2 values, 10 variable parameters for CaFe0.68(6)Rh1.32(6)Si2; a = 4.0695(1) Å, c = 9.9841(3) Å, R1 = 0.031, 114 F2 values, 8 variable parameters for CaRh2Si2; a = 3.974(1) Å, c = 10.395(1) Å, R1 = 0.036, 95 F2 values, 8 variable parameters for SrCo2Si2. The structure of SrCo2Si2 contains isolated [Co2Si2]2- 2D layers in the ab plane whereas in CaFe2-xRhxSi2 the [T2Si2] layers (T = Fe, Rh) are interconnected along the c axis via Si Si bonds resulting in a three-dimentional (3D) [T2Si2]2- and therefore belong to the so-called collapsed form of the ThCr2Si2-type structure. The SrCo2Si2 and CaRh2Si2 are isoelectronic to the parent 122 iron-pnictide superconductors AeFe2As2, whereas CaFe2Si2 is a full substituted variant (As/Si) of CaFe2As2. The crystal chemistry and chemical bonding in the title compounds are discussed in terms of LMTO band structure calculations and a topological analysis using the Electron Localization Function (ELF).
