We report high magnetic field (up to 45 T) c-axis thermal expansion and magnetostriction experiments on URu2Si2 single crystals. The sample length change associated with the transition to the hidden order phase becomes increasingly discontinous as the magnetic field is raised above 25 T. The re-entrant ordered phase III is clearly observed in both the thermal expansion and magnetostriction above 36 T, in good agreement with previous results. The sample length is also discontinuous at the boundaries of this phase, mainly at the upper boundary. A change in the sign of the coefficient of thermal-expansion is observed at the metamagnetic transition (B_M = 38 T) which is likely related to the existence of a quantum critical end point.

Comparative studies of magnetoelectric susceptibility ($α$), magnetization ($M$), and magnetostriction ($u$) in TbMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$ reveal that the increment of $M$ owing to the field-induced Tb$^{3+}$ spin alignment coins a field-asymmetric line shape in the $α(H)$ curve, being conspicuous in a low temperature incommensurate phase but persistently subsisting in the entire ferroelectric phase. Correlations among electric polarization, $u$, and $M^{2}$ variation represent linear relationships, unambiguously showing the significant role of Tb magnetoelastic effects on the low field magnetoelectric phenomena of TbMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$. An effective free energy capturing the observed experimental features is also suggested.

The unreconstructed Fermi surface a-sheet is observed in the high magnetic field polarized paramagnetic limit, but with its effective mass and Fermi surface volume strongly reduced in size compared to that observed in the low magnetic field paramagnetic regime under pressure. The spheroidal topology of this sheet provides an ideal realization of the transformation from a `large Fermi surface' accommodating f-electrons to a `small Fermi surface' when the f-electron moments become polarized.

A detailed study of the effect caused by the partial substitution of Ru by Ir on the magnetic and superconducting properties of the ruthenocuprate Ru(1-x)Ir(x)Sr2GdCu2o8; 0 <= x <= 0.10; is presented. The combined experimental results of structural, electrical, and magnetic measurements indicate that Ir substitutes Ru for x <= 0.10 with no significant structural distortions. Ir-doping gradually suppresses both the magnetic and the superconducting states. However, all samples were observed to attain the zero-resistance state at temperatures >= 2 K up to the highest applied magnetic field of 18 T. The resistive upper-critical field Hc2 as a function of temperature has been determined for these polycrystalline samples. Values of Hc2(0) were found to be \~ 52 T, and weakly dependent on the Ir concentration. We have also observed that the superconducting transition width decreases and the slope of the resistive transition increases with increasing Ir doping, a feature which is much more pronounced at high applied magnetic fields. The double-peak structure observed in the derivative of the resistive curves has been related to an inhomogeneous nature of the physical grains which is enhanced due to the Ru substitution by Ir. This indicates that the Josephson-junction-array (JJA) model seems to be appropriated to describe the superconducting state in these ruthenocuprates. The low temperature rho(T) data along with the determined vortex thermal activation energy are consistent with a 2D vortex dynamics in these materials.

The NdOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ crystals have the LaFe$_4$P$_{12}$-type cubic structure with a lattice parameter of 9.3 Å. Possible heavy-fermion behavior is inferred from specific heat measurements, which reveal a large electronic specific heat coefficient $γ\approx 520$ mJ/mol-K$^2$, corresponding to an effective mass $m^* \sim$ 98 $m_e$. Features related to a ferromagnetic transition at {$\sim$ 0.9 K} can be observed in electrical resistivity, magnetization and specific heat. Conventional Arrott-plot analysis indicates that NdOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ conforms to mean-field ferromagnetism.

The specific heat data also suggest crystalline electric field (CEF) splitting of the Sm^{3+} J = 5/2 multiplet into a Gamma_{7} doublet ground state and a Gamma_{8} quartet excited state separated by 37 K. Electrical resistivity rho(T) measurements reveal a decrease in rho(T) below ~50 K that is consistent with CEF splitting of ~33 K between a Gamma_(7) doublet ground state and Gamma_{8} quartet excited state. Specific heat and magnetic susceptibility measurements display a possible weak ferromagnetic transition at ~2.6 K, which could be an intrinsic property of SmOs_4Sb_{12} or possibly due to an unknown impurity phase.

Several transitions, both first and second order, are observed when the field is applied perpendicular to the crystallographic c-axis. The magnetic field dependence of the thermal-expansion coefficient above 15 K, where the magnetic correlations are negligible, can be explained supposing an almost pure $| \pm 5/2>$ ground state doublet, in apparent contradiction with neutron scattering experiments. Although the spin-lattice interaction is relevant in this compound, the effect of the magnetic correlations on the elastic properties is relatively weak, as revealed by resonant ultrasound spectroscopy experiments.

We have measured the electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance, and Hall effect on several new single crystal samples and one polycrystalline sample of alpha-uranium. The residual resistivity ratios of these samples vary from 13 to 315. Matthiessen's law appears to hold above the onset of the charge density wave phase transitions that begin near 43 K, but not below this temperature. Sharp features at all three charge density wave transitions are observed and the effects of high magnetic fields on them are presented and discussed. The magnetoresistance is anisotropic, reaches 1000% at 2 K and 18 T, and does not exhibit Kohler scaling. The Hall coefficient is positive, independent of magnetic field, and slightly temperature dependent above about 40 K in agreement with earlier studies. Below 40 K the Hall coefficient changes sign as the temperature falls, varies with field, and becomes much more strongly negative at the lowest temperatures than has been reported. Some of our results suggest that a spin density wave may coexist with the charge density wave states. Superconductivity is observed in two of our samples, we argue that it is intrinsic to alpha-uranium and suggest that it is consistent with a two-band model. Several parameters characterizing the transport and superconductivity of alpha-uranium are estimated.

Single crystals of the title compounds were grown out of an AgGe-rich ternary solution. Powder x-ray diffraction data confirmed the hexagonal AlNiZr-type structure ($P\bar{6}2m$ space group), an ordered variant of the Fe$_2$P structure type. Antiferromagnetic ordering can be inferred from magnetization, resistance and specific heat measurements, with values of T$_N$ between 28.5 K for TbAgGe, and 1.0 K for YbAgGe, which scale roughly with the de Gennes factor. Anisotropic $M(H)$ measurements indicate one or more metamagnetic transitions when the external field is applied along the c-axis (for R=Tb) or perpendicular to it (R = Ho, Er, Tm), or even in both orientations as in the case of DyAgGe. Furthermore, the extreme anisotropy of the magnetization in TmAgGe, where magnetic moments lie in the $ab$-plane, provides the possibility of studying the angular dependence of metamagnetism in hexagonal compounds with the rare earth in orthorhombic point symmetry.
YbAgGe has distinct properties from the rest of the series: an enhanced electronic specific heat coefficient ($γ\approx$(154.2$\pm$2.5)mJ/mol*K$^2$), and apparently small moment magnetic ordering below 1.0 K. This compound appears to be close to a quantum critical point.

For magnetic fields above 4.5 T, sharp features in the normal state electrical resistivity, magnetization, specific heat, and thermal expansion data suggest the occurrence of a phase transition at high fields. This high field ordered phase in the normal state may originate from a combination of crystalline electric field enhanced Zeeman splitting and quadrupolar ordering. We present an investigation of the electrical resistivity and magnetization of PrOs4Sb12 as a function of temperature between {350 mK} and {3.5 K} and magnetic field up to {18 T}. The data reveal a detailed phase boundary of the high field ordered phase as well as the lower critical field $H_{c1}$ and the onset field of the peak effect in the superconducting state of PrOs4Sb12.

Features associated with a cubic crystalline electric field are present in magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, electrical resistivity, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements, yielding a Pr$^{3+}$ energy level scheme consisting of a $Γ_{3}$ nonmagnetic doublet ground state, a low lying $Γ_{5}$ triplet excitied state at $\sim 10$ K, and much higher temperature $Γ_{4}$ triplet and $Γ_{1}$ singlet excited states. Measurements also indicate that the superconducting state is unconventional and consists of two distinct superconducting phases. At high fields and low temperatures, an ordered phase of magnetic or quadrupolar origin is observed, suggesting that the superconductivity may occur in the vicinity of a magnetic or quadrupolar quantum critical point.

Moreover, there was no upturn of resistivity in a low temperature region at 10 Tesla. The samples containing appreciable amounts of unreacted Mg showed quite different behaviors; the values of Delta_Tc, RRR, and MR were much larger. An upturn appeared in resistivity of the samples below about 50 K at 10 T and is thought to be due to the unreacted Mg.

The application of magnetic field along the b axis (the easy magnetization axis) stabilizes a ferromagnetic correlation between the Ce ions and enhances the hopping of carriers. We report results of the first studies on the magnetic and transport properties of a new material CeNiBi_2. The magnetic susceptibility exhibits a sharp peak at T_N = 6K, indicating an antiferromagnetic phase transition. This antiferromagnetic order below T_N is confirmed by magnetization measurement, which displays a metamagnetic-like transition at H_m = 5 T. Both low-temperature susceptibility and high-field magnetization are suggestive of strong crystalline-electric-field effect in CeNiBi_2. The electrical resistivity shows the presence of Kondo and crystal-field effects with a sharp drop below TN due to the antiferromagnetic ordering. This sharp drop below T_N in the electrical resistivity is suppressed slightly to higher temperatures by an applied magnetic field to 18 T. With increasing magnetic field, the slope of magnetoresistance changes from positive to negative, being indicative of the transition to a ferromagnetic state.

Abstract:
The magnetic structure of Ce0.9La0.1RhIn5 is measured using neutron diffraction. It is identical to the incommensurate transverse spiral for CeRhIn5, with a magnetic wave vector q_M=(1/2,1/2,0.297), a staggered moment of 0.38(2)Bohr magneton per Ce at 1.4K and a reduced Neel temperature of 2.7 K.

Abstract:
Experimental results for the susceptibility, specific heat, 4f occupation number, Hall effect and magnetoresistance for single crystals of YbAl$_{3}$ show that, in addition to the Kondo energy scale $k_{B}T_{K}$ $% \sim $ 670K, there is a low temperature scale $T_{coh}<50$K for the onset of coherence. Furthermore the crossover from the low temperature Fermi liquid regime to the high temperature…

Furthermore the crossover from the low temperature Fermi liquid regime to the high temperature local moment regime is slower than predicted by the Anderson impurity model. These effects may reflect the behavior of the Anderson Lattice in the limit of low conduction electron density.

High-quality epitaxial MgB2 thin films prepared by pulsed laser deposition with Tc = 39 K offer the opportunity to study the anisotropy and robustness of the superconducting state in magnetic fields. We measure the in-plane electrical resistivity of the films in magnetic fields to 60T and estimate the superconducting upper critical field Hc(0) = 24 +- 3 T for field oriented along the c-axis, and Hab(0) = 30 +- 2 T for field in the plane of the film. We find the zero-temperature coherence lengths xi_c(0) = 30 A and xi_ab(0) = 37 A to be shorter than the calculated electronic mean free path l = 100 +- 50 A, which places our films in the clean limit. The observation of such large upper critical fields from clean limit samples, coupled with the relatively small anisotropy, provides strong evidence of the viability of MgB2 as a technologically important superconductor.

Detailed magneto-transport data on dense wires of $MgB_2$ are reported for applied magnetic fields up to 18 T. The temperature and field dependencies of the electrical resistivity are consistent with $MgB_2$ behaving like a simple metal and following a generalized form of Kohler's rule. In addition, given the generally high $T_c$ values and narrow resistive transition widths associated with $MgB_2$ synthesized in this manner, combined with applied magnetic fields of up to 18 T, an accurate and complete $H_{c2}(T)$ curve could be determined. This curve agrees well with curves determined from lower field measurements on sintered pellets and wires of $MgB_2$. $H_{c2}(T)$ is linear in $T$ over a wide range of temperature (7 K $\le~T~\le$ 32 K) and has an upward curvature for $T$ close to $T_c$. These features are similar to other high $κ$, clean limit, boron-bearing intermetallics: $YNi_2B_2C$ and $LuNi_2B_2C$.

Abstract:
The effect of a magnetic field on the two long-range-ordered magnetic phases, the collinear insulating antiferromagnetic (AFI) and the incommensurate metallic transverse spin density wave (SDW), is investigated for the vanadium sesquioxide system. A field of 18 T has little effect on the AFI phase of a nominal V2O3 sample. The transverse SDW phase of V1.96O3 can be suppressed by a 4.6(3)-T magne…

A field of 18 T has little effect on the AFI phase of a nominal V2O3 sample. The transverse SDW phase of V1.96O3 can be suppressed by a 4.6(3)-T magnetic field applied in the plane of spiraling spins, while the same magnetic field applied along the spiral axis has little effect on the SDW phase.
