We investigated the magnetic helicity of the triple-$q$ magnetic structure of the triangular skyrmion lattice in the ``A-phase" of EuPtSi for a magnetic field along the [111] axis by resonant x-ray diffraction using a circularly polarized beam. We show that all three Fourier components of the triple-$q$ structure are perpendicular to the respective $q$ vectors and have the same helicity. They are connected by the rotation operations about the [111] axis. The helicity is the same as that of the single-$q$ helimagnetic phase at low fields, suggesting that the antisymmetric exchange interaction inherent in the chiral structure supports the formation of the triangular skyrmion lattice. We also observe that the helical plane in the helimagnetic phase is tilted to the magnetic field to form a conical structure before the first-order transition to the skyrmion lattice phase.

Magnetic skyrmions are particle-like spin-swirling objects ubiquitously realized in magnets. They are topologically stable chiral kinks composed of multiple modulation waves of spiral spin structures, where the helicity of each spiral is usually selected by antisymmetric exchange interactions in noncentrosymmetric crystals. We report an experimental observation of a distorted triangular lattice of skyrmions in the polar tetragonal magnet EuNiGe$_3$, reflecting a strong coupling with the lattice. Moreover, through resonant x-ray diffraction, we find that the magnetic helicity of the original spiral at zero field is reversed when the skyrmion lattice is formed in a magnetic field. This means that the energy gain provided by the skyrmion lattice formation is larger than the antisymmetric exchange interaction. Our findings will lead us to a further understanding of emergent magnetic states.

It is shown that the helicity of each cycloidal domain is uniquely determined and satisfies the symmetry relations of the $C_{4v}$ point group of the crystal structure. The result shows that the cycloidal helicity is determined by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya type antisymmetric exchange interaction. The domain selection and the phase transition by the external magnetic field along [100] and [110] have also been studied. It is shown that the cycloidal plane prefers to be perpendicular to the field and the transverse conical state is realized.

A magnetic phase transition takes place at $T_{\rm N}$ = 19.5 K. By applying a magnetic field along the $a$ axis at 2 K, the magnetization curve exhibits two jumps at $\sim$ 3 kOe and = 45 kOe. To determine the magnetic structure, we performed a resonant X-ray diffraction experiment by utilizing a circularly polarized beam. It is shown that a long-period antiferromagnetic (AFM) helical order is realized at zero field. The Gd spins in the honeycomb layer are coupled in an antiferromagnetic manner in the $c$ plane and rotate with a propagation vector $q$ = (0, 0, 1.485). The period of the helix is 66.7 unit cells ($\sim 180$~nm). In magnetic fields above 3~kOe applied perpendicular to the helical $c$ axis, the AFM helical order changes to an AFM order with $q$ = (0, 0, 1.5).

The ground and the first excited doublets are separated by 44 K and are simply expressed as $α|\pm 7/2\rangle + β|\mp 5/2\rangle$ with $α$ and $β$ nearly equal to $\pm 1/\sqrt{2}$. The easy axis of the crystal field anisotropy is the $c$ axis when the excited levels are populated at high temperatures and high magnetic fields. On the other hand, the magnetism at low temperatures and low magnetic fields, where only the ground doublet is populated, is described by an easy plane anisotropy which may be treated as an $S=1/2$ system with an anisotropic $g$-factor, $g_{xy}=3.02$ and $g_z=1.14$. An orbital dependent exchange interaction is also discussed to explain the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility based on this level scheme.

It is shown that EuIrGe$_3$ exhibits an incommensurate longitudinal sinusoidal order with $q\sim (0, 0, 0.792)$ and $m_{q} \parallel c\text{-axis}$ in the high temperature phase ($T_{\text{N}}^{\;\prime}< T < T_{\text{N}}$), which changes to a cycloidal order with $q=(δ', 0, 0.8)$ ($δ'\sim 0.017$) and $m_{q} \parallel ac\text{-plane}$ in the intermediate phase ($T_{\text{N}}^{\;*} < T < T_{\text{N}}^{\;\prime}$). In the low temperature phase ($T < T_{\text{N}}^{\;*}$), the cycloidal plane rotates by $45^{\circ}$ to have $q=(δ, δ, 0.8)$ ($δ\sim 0.012$). It is also pointed out that the X-ray scattering amplitude from odd-parity magnetic quadrupole due to the polar environment interfere with that from normal even-parity magnetic dipole in the magnetic ordered phase.

X-ray powder diffraction and electrical resistivity measurements were performed on the tetragonal compound CeCoSi under pressure to elucidate the phase boundary of the pressure-induced structural transition and the change in the 4$f$ electronic state. The temperature-pressure phase diagram has been determined from the shift of the Bragg peaks and from the anomaly in the resistivity. The critical pressure, $P_{\rm s}$ $\sim$ 4.9 GPa at 300 K, decreases to $P_{\rm s}$ $\sim$ 3.6 GPa at 10 K. The decrease of $P_{\rm s}$ is due not only to the decrease in volume of the unit cell but also to an anisotropic shrinkage by cooling. When crossing the boundary to the high-pressure phase, the resistivity shows a significant drop to exhibit a metallic temperature dependence. The results of this study strongly suggest that the structural phase transition can be ascribed to valence instability of Ce-$4f$ electron.

We have performed X-ray diffraction experiments on a single crystalline CeCoSi to investigate the unresolved ordered phase below $T_0 \sim 12$ K. We have discovered that a triclinic lattice distortion takes place below $T_0$, which is further modified in the subsequent antiferromagnetic ordered phase. The structural domains can be selected by applying a magnetic field, indicating that some electronic ordering exists behind and affects the magnetic anisotropy in the hidden ordered phase below $T_0$. The transition at $T_0$, although the order parameter is still unknown, is associated with the maximum in the $c$-axis lattice parameter. In magnetic fields along $[1, 0, 0]$, the structural transition temperature, named as $T_{\text{s1}}$, deviates from $T_0$ and decreases with increasing the field, whereas $T_0$ increases. This shows that the hidden ordered phase without triclinic distortion exists between $T_{\text{s1}}$ and $T_0$. The results for $H \parallel [1, 1, 0]$ are also reported.

We performed a crystal growth to obtain chirality-controlled enantiopure crystals using a laser-diode-heated floating zone (LDFZ) method with a composition-gradient feed rod. It has been argued that the crystal handedness of $T$Si ($T$ : transition metal) is fixed depending on $T$ in the case of the ones grown by the conventional methods. We found that right-handed single crystals of CoSi and MnSi were grown from the composition gradient feed rods that consist of FeSi--CoSi and FeSi--MnSi, respectively. The obtained CoSi and MnSi crystals inherit the chirality from the seed part of FeSi, which grows in a right-handed structure, and thus have the chirality opposite to that for the crystals in the literature. The LDFZ method with the feed rods with various combinations of $T$Si compounds enables a flexible control of the chirality of $T$Si and will be useful for clarifying the interplay between the crystalline chirality and chirality-induced physical responses.

Successive phase transitions in a rare-earth monoaxial chiral magnet DyNi$_3$Ga$_{9}$ have been investigated by resonant x-ray diffraction. Magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole degrees of freedom arising from the large angular moment of $J=15/2$, in combination with the symmetric and antisymmetric exchange interactions and the crystal field anisotropy, give rise to competing ordered phases. We show that the antiferromagnetically coupled Dy moments in the $ab$-plane form an incommensurate helimagnetic order with $q\sim(0, 0, 0.43)$ just below $T_{\text{N}}=10$ K, which further exhibits successive first-order transitions to the commensurate helimagnetic order with $q=(0,0,0.5)$ at $T_{\text{N}}^{\;\prime}=9.0$ K, and to the canted antiferromagnetic order with $q=(0,0,0)$ at $T_{\text{N}}^{\;\prime\prime}=8.5$ K, both with large coexistence regions. The relation of the magnetic helicity and the crystal chirality in DyNi$_3$Ga$_{9}$ is also uniquely determined. Splitting of the $(6,0,0)$ Bragg peak is observed below $T_{\text{N}}^{\;\prime\prime}$, reflecting the lattice distortion due to the ferroquadrupole order. In the canted antiferromagnetic phase, a spin-flop transition takes place at 5 K when the temperature is swept in a weak magnetic field. We discuss these transitions from the viewpoint of competing energies described above.

Nature of the field-induced charge ordered phase (phase II) of SmRu$_4$P$_{12}$ has been investigated by resonant x-ray diffraction (RXD) and polarized neutron diffraction (PND), focusing on the relationship between the atomic displacements and the antiferromagnetic (AFM) moments of Sm. From the analysis of the interference between the non-resonant Thomson scattering and the resonant magnetic scattering, combined with the spectral function obtained from x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, it is shown that the AFM moment of Sm prefers to be parallel to the field ($m_{\text{AF}} \parallel H$), giving rise to large and small moment sites around which the P$_{12}$ and Ru cage contract and expand, respectively. This is associated with the formation of the staggered ordering of the $Γ_7$-like and $Γ_8$-like crystal-field states, providing a strong piece of evidence for the charge order. PND was also performed to obtain complementary and unambiguous conclusion. In addition, isotropic and continuous nature of the phase II is demonstrated by the field-direction invariance of the interference spectrum in RXD. Crucial role of the $p$-$f$ hybridization is shown by resonant soft x-ray diffraction at the P $K$-edge ($1s\leftrightarrow 3p$), where we detected a resonance due to the spin polarized $3p$ orbitals reflecting the AFM order of Sm.

We analyzed this overtaking of the magnetization curves by considering a crystalline electric field model. It is shown that the $B_{66}$ term, which connects the $|\pm5/2 \rangle$ and the $|\mp7/2\rangle$ states through the off-diagonal matrix element, is responsible for the characteristic magnetization process in this compound. The Fourier transform of the magnetic exchange interaction $J(q)$ obtained from the crystal-field dispersion is largely different from that of the mean-field interaction obtained from the Néel temperature and the Weiss temperature. From detailed reexamination of the magnetic susceptibility and these $J(q)$ relations, we conclude that the magnetic exchange interaction is dependent on the crystal-field levels. The interaction associated with the $Γ_8$ excited state is stronger than that with the $Γ_7$ ground state.

Successive magnetic phase transitions at $T_1$=17.5 K and $T_2$=18.5 K in Gd$_3$Ru$_4$Al$_{12}$, with a distorted kagome lattice of Gd ions, is studied using resonant X-ray diffraction with polarization analysis. It has been suggested that in this compound the $S=7/2$ spins on the nearest-neighbor Gd-triangle form a ferromagnetic trimer and the Gd lattice can be effectively considered as an antiferromagnetic triangular lattice of $S=21/2$ spin trimers [S. Nakamura et al., Phys. Rev. B 98, 054410 (2018)]. We show that the magnetic order in this system is described by an incommensurate wave vector $q$~(0.27, 0, 0), which varies slightly with temperature. In the low temperature phase below $T_1$, the experimental results are well explained by considering that the spin trimers form a helical order with both the $c$-axis and $c$-plane components. In the intermediate phase above $T_1$, the $c$-axis component vanishes, resulting in a sinusoical structure within the $c$-plane. The sinusoidal-helical transition at $T_1$ can be regarded as an ordering of chiral degree of freedom, which is degenerate in the intermediate phase.

We report the presence of giant spontaneous exchange bias (HSEB) in a hard and soft antiferromagnetic composite of BiFeO3-TbMnO3 (BFO-TMO in 7:3 and 8:2 ratio). The HSEB varies between 5-778Oe, but persists up to room temperature with a maximum near a spin reorientation transition temperature observed from magnetization vs. temperature measurement in Zero-field cooled (ZFC) and Field cooled (FC) modes. Isothermal remnant magnetization measurements at room temperature indicate the presence of an interfacial layer of a 2 dimensional dilute antiferromagnet in a field (2D DAFF). A stable value of the exchange bias has been observed via training effect measurements which signify the role of interfacial exchange coupling in the system. Based on the experimental results we explain the presence of the giant spontaneous exchange bias on the basis of a strong strain-mediated magnetoelectriccoupling induced exchange interaction and the creation of 2D DAFF layer at the interface. Theproperties of this layer are defined by canting and pinning of BFO spins at the interface with TMO due to Fe and Mn interaction. X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) confirms the presence of canted antiferromagnetic ordering of BiFeO3, charge transfer between Mn ions and different magnetically coupled layers which play vital role in getting the exchange bias.

Helical magnetic structures and its responses to external magnetic fields in Yb(Ni$_x$Cu$_{1-x}$)$_3$Al$_9$, with a chiral crystal structure of the space group $R32$, have been investigated by resonant X-ray diffraction. It is shown that the crystal chirality is reflected to the helicity of the magnetic structure by a one to one relationship, indicating that there exists an antisymmetric exchange interaction mediated via the conduction electrons. When a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the helical axis ($c$ axis), the second harmonic peak of $(0, 0, 2q)$ develops with increasing the field. The third harmonic peak of $(0, 0, 3q)$ has also been observed for the $x$=0.06 sample. This result provides a strong evidence for the formation of a chiral magnetic soliton lattice state, a periodic array of the chiral twist of spins, which has been suggested by the characteristic magnetization curve. We have performed resonant X-ray diffraction experiments on the antiferromagnet GdRu$_{2}$Al$_{10}$ and have clarified that the magnetic structure in the ordered state is cycloidal with the moments lying in the $bc$ plane and propagating along the $b$ axis. The propagation vector shows a similar temperature dependence to the magnetic order parameter, which can be interpreted as being associated with the gap opening in the conduction band and the resultant change in the magnetic exchange interaction. Although the $S=7/2$ state of Gd is almost isotropic, the moments show slight preferential ordering along the $b$ axis. The $c$ axis component in the cycloid develops with decreasing temperature through a tiny transition in the ordered phase. We also show that the scattering involves the $σ$-$σ'$ process, which is forbidden in normal $E1$-$E1$ resonance of magnetic dipole origin. We discuss the possibility of the $E1$-$E2$ resonance originating from a toroidal moment due to the lack of inversion symmetry at the Gd site. The spin-flop transition in a magnetic field is also described in detail.

We report a ^{125}Te-NMR study of single-crystalline Pb_{1-x}Tl_{x}Te for x= 0 (undoped non-superconducting "parent"), 0.35 at% (doped but on the borderline of superconductivity), and 1.0 at% (superconducting, with a critical temperature Tc ~ 1.0 K). The Knight shift in the normal state is enhanced as x increases, corresponding to an increase in the average density of states (DOS). The NMR line-width also increases significantly with increasing x, indicative of a strong spatial variation in the local DOS surrounding each Tl dopant. Remarkably, for the superconducting composition, the ^{125}Te nuclear spin relaxation rate (1/T1T) for Te ions that are close to the Tl dopants is unexpectedly enhanced in the normal state below a characteristic temperature of ~10 K. This temperature coincides with the temperature below which the normal state resistivity experiences an upturn. Such a simultaneous upturn in both the resistivity and (1/T1T) is highly anomalous, and puts Pb_{1-x}Tl_{x}Te in a distinct new class of doped semiconductors. These observations provide microscopic evidence for dynamical charge fluctuations in the absence of paramagnetism, and are consistent with expectations for charge Kondo behavior associated with the Tl dopant ions. In contrast, such anomalies were not detected in the non-superconducting samples (x=0 and 0.35 at%), suggesting a connection between dynamical valence fluctuations and the occurrence of superconductivity in Pb_{1-x}Tl_{x}Te.

Atomic displacements of Ru and P, reflecting the field-induced charge order of the $p$ electrons, have been deduced by analyzing the intensities of the forbidden Bragg peaks, assuming a cubic space group $Pm\bar{3}$. Also, by utilizing high-resolution x-ray diffraction experiment, we observed a splitting of fundamental Bragg peaks, clarifying that the unit cell in the magnetic ordered phase is rhombohedral elongated along the $[1\, 1\, 1]$ axis. Responses of the rhombohedral domains to the magnetic field, which reflects the direction of the magnetic moment, is studied in detail.

The spin-orbit torque switching of ferrimagnetic Gd$_x$(Fe$_{90}$Co$_{10}$)$_{100-x}$ films was studied for both transition metal (TM)-rich and rare earth (RE)-rich configurations. The spin-orbit torque driven magnetization switching follows the same handedness in TM-rich and RE-rich samples with respect to the total magnetization, but the handedness of the switching is reversed with respect to the TM magnetization. This indicates that the sign of the spin-orbit-torque-driven magnetic switching follows the total magnetization, although transport based techniques such as anomalous Hall effect are only sensitive to the transition metal magnetization. These results provide important insight into the physics of spin angular momentum transfer in materials with antiferromagnetically coupled sublattices.

We have measured the electrical resistivity of cerium monochalcogenices, CeS, CeSe, and CeTe, under high pressures up to 8 GPa. Pressure dependences of the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_{N}$, crystal field splitting, and the $\ln T$ anomaly of the Kondo effect have been studied to cover the whole region from the magnetic ordering regime at low pressure to the Fermi liquid regime at high pressure. $T_{N}$ initially increases with increasing pressure, and starts to decrease at high pressure as expected from the Doniach's diagram. Simultaneously, the $\ln T$ behavior in the resistivity is enhanced, indicating the enhancement of the Kondo effect by pressure. It is also characteristic in CeX$_{c}$ that the crystal field splitting rapidly decreases at a common rate of $-12.2$ K/GPa. This leads to the increase in the degeneracy of the $f$ state and further enhancement of the Kondo effect. It is shown that the pressure dependent degeneracy of the $f$ state is a key factor to understand the pressure dependence of $T_{N}$, Kondo effect, magnetoresistance, and the peak structure in the temperature dependence of resistivity.

We have confirmed the successive magnetic phase transitions at $T_{\text{N}}=12.3$ K and $T_{\text{M}}=5.6$ K. Resonant x-ray diffraction has also been performed to study the magnetic structures. Below $T_{\text{N}}$, the Sm$^{3+}$ moments order in an incommensurate structure with $q_1=(0, 0.759, 0)$. The magnetic moments are oriented along the orthorhombic $b$ axis, which coincides with the magnetization easy axis in the paramagnetic phase. A very weak third harmonic peak is also observed at $q_3=(0, 0.278, 0)$. The transition at $T_{\text{M}}$ is a lock-in transition to the commensurate structure described by $q_1=(0, 0.75, 0)$. A well developed third harmonic peak is observed at $q_3=(0, 0.25, 0)$. From the discussion of the magnetic structure, we propose that the long-range RKKY interaction plays an important role, in addition to the strong nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction.

We report how orthorhombic domains are controlled by adjusting external magnetic fields. It is shown that orthorhombic domains in RAl$_3$C$_3$ can be aligned by the field when the R ion is magnetic. It is also shown that a single-domain state can be switched to another single-domain state by the field even in paramagnetic states with small induced moments. For R=Lu, however, it was not possible to change the multidomain state by a field of up to 70 kOe. We discuss that domain selection and switching are caused by magnetic anisotropies in the orthorhombic phase of RAl$_3$C$_3$. We also propose an idea to explain the field-induced antiferromagnetism revealed by Khalyavin et al. [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{87}, 220406 (2013)].

Valence instability is a key ingredient of the unusual properties of f electron materials, yet a clear understanding is lacking as it involves a complex interplay between f electrons and conduc- tion states. Here we propose a unified picture of pressure-induced valence transition in Sm and Yb monochalcogenides, considered as model system for mixed valent 4f-electron materials. Using high-resolution x-ray absorption spectroscopy, we show that the valence transition is driven by the promotion of a 4f electron specifically into the lowest unoccupied (LU) 5d t2g band. We demonstrate with a promotional model that the nature of the transition at low pressures is intimately related to the density of states of the LU band, while at high pressures it is governed by the hybridization strength. These results set a new standard for the generic understanding of valence fluctuations in f-electron materials.

CeB6, a typical Gamma_8-quartet system, exhibits a mysterious antiferroquadrupolar ordered phase in magnetic fields, which is considered as originating from the T_{xyz}-type magnetic octupole moment induced by the field. By resonant x-ray diffraction in magnetic fields, we have verified that the T_{xyz}-type octupole is indeed induced in the 4f-orbital of Ce with a propagation vector (1/2, 1/2, 1/2), thereby supporting the theory. We observed an asymmetric field dependence of the intensity for an electric quadrupole (E2) resonance when the field was reversed, and extracted a field dependence of the octupole by utilizing the interference with an electric dipole (E1) resonance. The result is in good agreement with that of the NMR-line splitting, which reflects the transferred hyperfine field at the Boron nucleus from the anisotropic spin distribution of Ce with an O_{xy}-type quadrupole. The field-reversal method used in the present study opens up the possibility of being widely applied to other multipole ordering systems such as NpO2, Ce_{x}La_{1-x}B_{6}, SmRu_{4}P_{12}, and so on.

The present report focuses on the lattice distortion below the quadrupolar ordering temperature at TN2=12.7 K. The (0 0 l=integer) fundamental lattice reflection splits into four peaks along the h and k directions and the (h=even 0 0) reflection becomes broad along the l direction. This indicates that a structural transition from tetragonal to monoclinic takes place below TN2 together with the ordering of the quadrupolar moments.

TbB$_4$ exhibits a multi-step magnetization process above 16 T when magnetic fields are applied along the c-axis. We examined the intensity of the 010 magnetic reflection as a function of magnetic field and found that the magnetization plateau phases are accompanied by large XY components of magnetic moments, in contrast to normal fractional magnetization plateau phases. The magnetization was calculated using a simple spin model deduced from the above result. Finally we propose that frustration is the key to understanding the observed multi-step magnetization.

We have examined whether the Co ions crystallographically substitute on the Ti sites in rutile and anatase Ti_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O$_{2-delta}$ thin films that exhibit room-temperature ferromagnetism. Intensities of the x-ray Bragg reflection from the films were measured around the $K$-absorption-edge of Co. If the Co ions randomly substitute on the Ti sites, the intensity should exhibit an anomaly due to the anomalous dispersion of the atomic scattering factor of Co. However, none of the anatase and rutile samples did exhibit an anomaly, unambiguously showing that the Co ions in Ti$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O$_{2-delta}$ are not exactly located at the Ti sites of TiO$_2$. The absence of the anomaly is probably caused by a significant deformation of the local structure around Co due to the oxygen vacancy. We have applied the same method to paramagnetic Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O thin films and obtained direct evidence that the Co ions are indeed substituted on the Zn sites.

Resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) experiment has been performed for the (3 0 1.5) superlattice reflection in the antiferroquadrupolar and antiferromagnetic phase of DyB2C2. Azimuthal-angle dependence of the resonance enhanced intensities for both dipolar (E1) and quadrupolar (E2) resonant processes has been measured precisely with polarization analysis. Every scattering channel exhibits distinctive azimuthal dependence, differently from the symmetric reflection at (0 0 0.5) which was studied previously. We have analyzed the results using a theory developed by Lovesey et al., which directly connects atomic tensors with the cross-section of RXS. The fitting results indicate that the azimuthal dependences can be explained well by the atomic tensors up to rank 2. Rank 3 and rank 4 tensors are reflected in the data very little. In addition, The coupling scheme among the 4f quadrupolar moment, 5d ortitals, and the lattice has been determined from the interference among the Thomson scattering from the lattice distortion and the resonant scatterings of E1 and E2 processes. It has also been established from the RXS of the (3 0 1.5) reflection that the canting of the 4f quadrupolar moments exists up to T_Q. We also discuss a possible wavefunction of the ground state from the point-charge model calculation.

Experimental evidence of the d-f Coulomb interaction responsible for the resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) from antiferroquadrupolar order in DyB2C2 is presented. The energy dependences of the RXS intensity with polarization analysis are analyzed by considering the interference between the resonances of dipolar (E1) and quadrupolar (E2) transition processes. It is found that the structure factors for the E1 and E2 processes have the same sign for sigma-pi' but the opposite sign for sigma-sigma' channel. This result, when compared with the calculated structure factors, means that the quadrupolar moments of the 4f and 5d electrons have opposite signs to each other. Interference between nonresonant Thomson scattering from the lattice distortion and the resonant scatterings is also studied and a direct coupling between 4f and the lattice is concluded.

When the incident photon energy is tuned near the Mn K absorption edge, the spectra reveal three features at 2.5 eV, 8 eV and 11 eV. The 8 eV and 11 eV peaks are considered charge-transfer type excitations. On the other hand, theoretical calculations identify the 2.5 eV peak as an orbital excitation across the Mott gap, i.e. an electron excitation from the lower Hubbard band with the d3x2-r2 and d3y2-r2 orbital characters to the upper Hubbard band with the dy2-z2 and dz2-x2 ones. The observed weak dispersion and characteristic azimuthal angle dependence of this new type of excitations are well reproduced by the theory which includes orbital degeneracy and strong electron correlation.

Abstract:
We have investigated the antiferroquadrupolar(AFQ) order in DyB$_2$C$_2$ by resonant x-ray scattering. X-rays with energies near the $L_3$ absorption edge of Dy were employed. Superlattice peaks that correspond to three kinds of propagation vectors of (1 0 0), (1 0 1/2) and (0 0 1/2) were investigated in detail with polarization analyses. The experimental results are analyzed using a formalism o…

Superlattice peaks that correspond to three kinds of propagation vectors of (1 0 0), (1 0 1/2) and (0 0 1/2) were investigated in detail with polarization analyses. The experimental results are analyzed using a formalism on resonant x-ray scattering and a model of the AFQ order. The magnetic and quadrupolar scatterings are explained by the model satisfactorily. A detailed investigation on the critical behavior of the AFQ ordering is also reported. The critical exponent $β$ is deduced to be 0.35, not far from the three-dimensional Heisenberg system. We have also succeeded in detecting the diffuse scattering above $T_{Q}$.

No direct evidences for AFQ ordering, however, have been reported. Using the resonant x-ray scattering technique near the Dy L_III absorption edge, we have succeeded in observing the AFQ order parameter in DyB2C2 and analyzing the energy and polarization dependence. Much weaker coupling between orbital degrees of freedom and lattice in 4f electron systems than in 3d compounds provides an ideal platform to study orbital interactions originated from electronic mechanisms.

Neutron diffraction experiments on TmTe at pressures up to 7 GPa are reported. The semiconductor-to-metal transition occurring at 2 GPa in this compound is accompanied by the appearance of strong ferromagnetic exchange interactions producing a Curie temperature as high as 14 K. This behavior is characteristic for the incipient mixed-valence regime just above the transition pressure and traced back to the release of a small concentration of free charge carriers in the material. The steep decrease of both the Curie temperature and ordered magnetic moment occurring at higher pressures emphasizes the role of Kondo fluctuations, and raises the interesting possibility that a quantum critical transition to a non-magnetic ground state of mixed-valence Tm might take place around 6 GPa.
