We present the structural ordering and the associated physical behavior of a Ni-Mn-Si Laves phase, Mn(Ni$_{0.6}$Si$_{0.4})_2$. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy analysis were performed to resolve a distinct atomic ordering of the system. The study determined the origin of the short-range ordering to be the unique arrangement between Ni and Si atoms. The study also presents the atomic resolution mapping of the Si atoms which has never been reported by any previous studies. With further electrical conductivity measurement, we find one of the consequences of the unique ordering reflected in a semiconducting like temperature dependence of the compound.

Abstract:
The influence of antisite disorder occupancies on the magnetic properties of the half-metallic Co$_2$MnSi compound was studied by experimental techniques and first-principles calculations. The influence of antisite disorder occupancies on the magnetic properties of the half-metallic Co$_2$MnSi compound was studied by experimental techniques and first-principles calculations. The neutron diffraction studies show almost identical amount of Mn and Co disorders of 6.5\% and 7.6\%, which was found to be in good agreement with density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the stable Co$_2$MnSi system with the corresponding disorders. DFT studies reveal that antiferromagnetic interactions introduced by Mn disorder lead to a reduction of the net magnetic moment. The results are discussed in conjunction with neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements. Transport property measurement under magnetic field up to 9 Tesla revealed a positive magnetoresistance for bulk Co$_2$MnSi that persists up to room temperature. A Curie temperature of $\sim$1014 K was determined for the compound by high temperature electrical resistivity and dilatometry measurements.

Transition metal compounds with complex crystal structures tend to demonstrate interesting magnetic coupling resulting in unusual magnetic properties. In this work, the structural and magnetic characterization of a single crystal of the Ni-Mn-Si based G-phase compound, Mn$_6$Ni$_{16}$Si$_7$, grown by the Czochralski method, is reported. In this structure isolated octahedral Mn$_6$ clusters form a f.c.c. lattice. As each octahedron consists of eight edge-sharing equilateral triangles, the possibility for geometric frustration exists. Magnetization and specific heat measurements showed two magnetic phase transitions at 197 K and 50 K, respectively. At 100 K neutron diffraction on powder samples shows a magnetic structure with k = (001) in which only four of the six Mn spins per cluster order along $<100>$ directions giving a two dimensional magnetic structure consistent with intra-cluster frustration. Below the 50 K phase transition the Mn spins cant away from $<100>$ directions and a weak moment develops on the two remaining Mn octahedral sites.

Abstract:
The insulator/metal transition induced by hole-doping due to neodymium vacancies of the Mott- Hubbard antiferromagnetic insulator, Nd1-xTiO3, is studied over the composition range 0.010(6) < x < 0.243(10). Insulating p-types conduction is found for x < 0.071(10). Anderson localization in the presence of a Mott-Hubbard gap, is the dominant localization mechanism for the range of 0.074(10) < x < 0…

Anderson localization in the presence of a Mott-Hubbard gap, is the dominant localization mechanism for the range of 0.074(10) < x < 0.089(1) samples. For x < 0.089(1), n-type conduction is observed and the activation energy extrapolates to zero by x < 0.1. The 0.095(8) < x < 0.203(10) samples are Fermi-liquid metals and the effects of strong electronic correlations are evident near the metal-to-insulator boundaries in features such as large Fermi liquid T2 coefficients. For 0.074(9) < x < 0.112(4), a weak negative magnetoresistance is found below ~ 15 K and it is attributed to the interaction of conduction electrons with Nd3+ magnetic moments. Combining information from our companion study of the magnetic properties of Nd1-xTiO3 solid solution, a phase diagram is proposed. The main conclusions are that long range antiferromagnetic order disappears before the onset of metallic behavior and that the Anderson-Mott transition occurs over a finite range of doping levels. Our results differ from conclusions drawn from a similar study on the hole doped Nd1-xCaxTiO3 system which found the co-existence of antiferromagnetic order and metallic behavior and that the Mott transition occurs at a discrete doping level.

Magnetic flux jumps in textured Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+d) have been studied by means of magnetization measurements in the temperature range between 1.95 K and Tc, in an external magnetic field up to 9 T. Flux jumps were found in the temperature range 1.95 K - 6 K, with the external magnetic field parallel to the c axis of the investigated sample. The effect of sample history on magnetic flux jumping was studied and it was found to be well accounted for by the available theoretical models. The magnetic field sweep rate strongly influences the flux jumping and this effect was interpreted in terms of the influence of both flux creep and the thermal environment of the sample. Strong flux creep was found in the temperature and magnetic field range where flux jumps occur suggesting a relationship between the two. The heat exchange conditions between the sample and the experimental environment also influence the flux jumping behavior. Both these effects stabilize the sample against flux instabilities, and this stabilizing effect increases with decreasing magnetic field sweep rate. Demagnetizing effects are also shown to have a significant influence on flux jumping.
