New phases with broken discrete Ising symmetries are uncovered in quantum materials with strong electronic correlations. The two-leg ladder cuprate \textbf{$Sr_{14-x}Ca_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41}$} hosts a very rich phase diagram where, upon hole doping, the system exhibits a spin liquid state ending to an intriguing ordered magnetic state at larger $Ca$ content. Using polarized neutron diffraction, we report here the existence of short range magnetism in this material for two $Ca$ contents, whose origin cannot be ascribed to Cu spins. This magnetism develops exclusively within the two-leg ladders with a diffraction pattern at forbidden Bragg scattering which is the hallmark of loop current-like magnetism breaking both time-reversal and parity symmetries. Our discovery shows local discrete symmetry breaking in a one dimensional spin liquid system as theoretically predicted. It further suggests that a loop current-like phase could trigger the long range magnetic order reported at larger doping in two-leg ladder cuprates.

In the multiferroic hexagonal manganite HoMnO3, inelastic neutron scattering and synchrotron based THz spectroscopy have been used to investigate the spin waves associated to the Mn order together with Ho crystal field excitations. While the Mn order sets in first below 80 K, a spin reorientation occurs below 37 K, a rare feature in the rare earth manganites. We show that severalHo crystal field excitations are present in the same energy range as the magnons, and that they are all affected by the spin reorientation. Moreover, several anomalous features are observed in the excitations at low temperature. Our analysis and calculations for the Mn spin waves and Ho crystal field excitations support Mn-Ho coupling mechanisms as well as coupling to the lattice affecting the dynamics.

The S=1/2 Heisenberg spin chain compound SrCuO2 doped with different amounts of nickel (Ni), palladium (Pd), zinc (Zn) and cobalt (Co) has been studied by means of Cu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Replacing only a few of the S=1/2 Cu ions with Ni, Pd, Zn or Co has a major impact on the magnetic properties of the spin chain system. In the case of Ni, Pd and Zn an unusual line broadening in the low temperature NMR spectra reveals the existence of an impurity-induced local alternating magnetization (LAM), while exponentially decaying spin-lattice relaxation rates $T_1^{-1}$ towards low temperatures indicate the opening of spin gaps. A distribution of gap magnitudes is proven by a stretched spin-lattice relaxation and a variation of $T_1^{-1}$ within the broad resonance lines. These observations depend strongly on the impurity concentration and therefore can be understood using the model of finite segments of the spin 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain, i.e. pure chain segmentation due to S = 0 impurities. This is surprising for Ni as it was previously assumed to be a magnetic impurity with S = 1 which is screened by the neighboring copper spins. In order to confirm the S = 0 state of the Ni, we performed x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and compared the measurements to simulated XAS spectra based on multiplet ligand-field theory. Furthermore, Zn doping leads to much smaller effects on both the NMR spectra and the spin-lattice relaxation rates, indicating that Zn avoids occupying Cu sites. For magnetic Co impurities, $T_1^{-1}$ does not obey the gap like decrease, and the low-temperature spectra get very broad. This could be related to the increase of the Neel temperature which was observed by recent muSR and susceptibility measurements, and is most likely an effect of the impurity spin $S\neq0$.

We report a systematic study of the $c$ lattice parameter in the Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ phases versus Na content $x>0.5$, in which sodium always displays ordered arrangements. This allows us to single out the first phase which exhibits an AF magnetic order at a Néel temperature $T_{N}=$22 K which is found to occur for $x\approx 0.77(1)$. Pure samples of this phase have been studied both as aligned powders and single crystals. They exhibit identical $^{23}$Na NMR spectra in which three sets of Na sites could be fully resolved, and are found to display $T$ dependencies of their NMR shifts which scale with each other. This allows us to establish that the $T$ variation of the shifts is due to the paramagnetism of the Co sites with formal charge state larger than 3$^{+}$. The existence of a sodium site with axial charge symmetry and the intensity ratio between the sets of $^{23}$Na lines permits us to reveal that the 2D structure of the Na order corresponds to 10 Na sites on top of a 13 Co sites unit cell, that is with $x=10/13\approx 0.77$. This structure fits with that determined from local density calculations and involves triangles of 3 Na sites located on top of Co sites (so called Na1 sites). The associated ordering of the Na vacancies is quite distinct from that found for $x<0.75$.

Rhodium doping suppresses the structural phase transition and spin density wave observed in the undoped material, and superconductivity emerges at x close to 0.05, despite the distortion of FeAs4 tetrahedra induced by the large size difference between Rh and Fe elements. The Tc(x) curve is dome-like, and the highest Tc is reached at x = 0.1, with Tconset = 18K. An upturn of the electrical resistivity above Tc has been observed, with a Kondo like behaviour above Tc and a Fermi-liquid behaviour close to room temperature.

The dependence of the orbital polaron lattice on $negative$ chemical pressure is studied by substituting Pr for La in $\mathrm{(La_{1-y}Pr_y)_{7/8}Sr_{1/8}MnO_{3}}$. In addition, we have studied its hydrostatic pressure dependence in $\mathrm{(La_{0.9}Pr_{0.1})_{7/8}Sr_{1/8}MnO_{3}}$. Our results strongly indicate that the hopping $t$ significantly contributes to the stabilization of the orbital polaron lattice and that the orbital polarons are ferromagnetic objects which get stabilized by local double exchange processes. The analysis of short range orbital correlations and the verification of the Grueneisen scaling by hard x-ray, specific heat and thermal expansion data reinforces our conclusions.

Full crystal structure refinement, from a neutron diffraction experiment below Tco on a Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3 single crystal, gives us a model for the displacement of atoms with respect to the high temperature (HT) phase that invalidates the standard model based on the CO/OO picture. An alternative picture is that the phase transition and charge localization at Tco arise from a spatially ordered condensation of ferromagnetic Mn-Mn pairs, in which Mn atoms keeps an intermediate valence state.
