The effective spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg-Ising chain materials, ACo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$, A = Sr, Ba, are a rich source of exotic fundamental phenomena and have been investigated for their model magnetic properties both in zero and non-zero magnetic fields. Here we investigate a new member of the family, namely PbCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$. We synthesize powder and single crystal samples of PbCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ and determine its magnetic structure using neutron diffraction. Furthermore, the magnetic field/temperature phase diagrams for magnetic field applied along the c, a, and [110] crystallographic directions in the tetragonal unit cell are determined via magnetization and heat capacity measurements. A complex series of phases and quantum phase transitions are discovered that depend strongly on both the magnitude and direction of the field. Our results show that \pcvo is an effective spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg-Ising chain with properties that are in general comparable to those of SrCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ and BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$. One interesting departure from the results of these related compounds, is however, the discovery of a new field-induced phase for the field direction $H\|$[110] which has not been previously observed.

Isolated magnetic skyrmions are stable, topologically protected spin textures that are at the forefront of research interests today due to their potential applications in information technology. A distinct class of skyrmion hosts are rare earth - transition metal (RE-TM) ferrimagnetic materials. To date, the nature and the control of basic traits of skyrmions in these materials are not fully understood. We show that for an archetypal ferrimagnetic material DyCo$_3$ that exhibits a strong perpendicular anisotropy, the ferrimagnetic skyrmion size can be tuned by an external magnetic field. Moreover, by taking advantage of the high spatial resolution of scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) and utilizing a large x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) contrast that occurs naturally at the RE resonant edges, we resolve the nature of the magnetic domain walls of ferrimagnetic skyrmions. We demonstrate that through this method one can easily discriminate between Bloch and Néel type domain walls for each individual skyrmion. For all isolated ferrimagnetic skyrmions, we observe that the domain walls are of Néel-type. This key information is corroborated with results of micromagnetic simulations and allows us to conclude on the nature of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) which concurs to the stabilisation of skyrmions in this ferrimagnetic system. Establishing that an intrinsic DMI occurs in RE-TM materials will also be beneficial towards a deeper understanding of chiral spin texture control in ferrimagnetic materials.

Enhanced magnetism has recently been reported for the topological-insulator/ferromagnet interface Bi$_2$Se$_3$/EuS with Curie temperatures claimed to be raised above room temperature from the bulk EuS value of 16 K. Here we investigate the analogous interface Bi$_2$Se$_3$/EuSe. EuSe is a low-temperature layered ferrimagnet that is particularly sensitive to external perturbations. We find that superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry of Bi$_2$Se$_3$/EuSe heterostructures reveals precisely the magnetic phase diagram known from EuSe, including the ferrimagnetic phase below 5 K, without any apparent changes from the bulk behavior. Choosing a temperature of 10 K to search for magnetic enhancement, we determine an upper limit for a possible magnetic coercive field of 3 mT. Using interface sensitive x-ray absorption spectroscopy we verify the magnetic divalent configuration of the Eu at the interface without contamination by Eu3+, and by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) we confirm at the interface the magnetic hysteresis obtained by SQUID. XMCD data obtained at 10 K in a magnetic field of 6 T indicate a magnetic spin moment of mz,spin = 7 $μ$B/Eu$^{2+}$, in good agreement with the SQUID data and the expected theoretical moment of Eu2+. Subsequent XMCD measurements in zero field show, however, that sizable remanent magnetization is absent at the interface for temperatures down to about 10 K.

In this work, we investigate the evolution and settling of magnon condensation in the spin-1/2 dimer system Sr$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$ using a combination of magnetostriction in pulsed fields and inelastic neutron scattering in a continuous magnetic field. The magnetic structure in the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) phase was probed by neutron diffraction in pulsed magnetic fields up to 39~T. The magnetic structure in this phase was confirmed to be an XY-antiferromagnetic structure validated by irreducible representational analysis. The magnetic phase diagram as a function of an applied magnetic field for this system is presented. Furthermore, zero-field neutron diffraction results indicate that dimerization plays an important role in stabilizing the low-temperature crystal structure.

We investigate the structural and magnetic properties of the new quantum magnet BaCuTe$_2$O$_6$. This compound is synthesized for the first time in powder and single crystal form. Synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction reveal a cubic crystal structure (P4$_1$32) where the magnetic Cu$^{2+}$ ions form a complex network. Physical properties measurements suggest the presence of antiferromagnetic interactions with a Curie-Weiss temperature of -33K, while long-range magnetic order occurs at the much lower temperature of ~6.3K. The magnetic structure, solved using neutron diffraction, reveals antiferromagnetic order along chains parallel to the a, b and c crystal axes. This is consistent with the magnetic excitations which resemble the multispinon continuum typical of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain. A consistent intrachain interaction value of ~34K is achieved from the various techniques. Finally the magnetic structure provides evidence that the chains are coupled together in a non-colinear arrangement by a much weaker antiferromagnetic, frustrated hyperkagome interaction.

While a field aligned along the in-plane direction broadens and suppresses the resonance, a c-axis aligned field does so much more efficiently, consistent with the anisotropic field-induced suppression of the superfluid density from the heat capacity measurements. These results suggest that the resonance in FeSe is associated with the superconducting electrons arising from orbital selective quasi-particle excitations between the hole and electron Fermi surfaces.

We report an unexpected magnetic-field-driven magnetic structure in the 5f-electron Shastry- Sutherland system U2Pd2In. This phase develops at low temperatures from a noncollinear antiferromagnetic ground state above the critical field of 25.8 T applied along the a-axis. All U moments have a net magnetic moment in the direction of the applied field, described by a ferromagnetic propagation vector qF = (0 0 0) and an antiferromagnetic component described by a propagation vector qAF = (0 0.30 1/2 ) due to a modulation in the direction perpendicular to the applied field. We conclude that this surprising noncollinear magnetic structure is due to a competition between the single-ion anisotropy trying to keep moments, similar to the ground state, along the [110]-type directions, Dzyaloshinskii-Moryia interaction forcing them to be perpendicular to each other and application of the external magnetic field attempting to align them along the field direction.

Using single crystal neutron and x-ray diffraction, we discovered a charge density wave (CDW) below 320 K, which accounts for the long-sought origin of the heat capacity and resistivity anomalies in UPt2Si2. The modulation wavevector, Qmod, is intriguingly similar to the Fermi surface nesting wavevector of URu2Si2. Qmod shows an unusual temperature dependence, shifting from commensurate to incommensurate position upon cooling and becoming locked at ~ (0.42 0 0) near 180 K. Bulk measurements indicate a cross-over toward a correlated coherent state around the same temperature, suggesting an interplay between the CDW and Kondo-lattice-like coherence before coexisting antiferromagnetic order sets in at TN = 35 K.

We present neutron diffraction data for the cubic-heavy-fermion YbBiPt that show broad magnetic diffraction peaks due to the fragile short-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order persist under an applied magnetic-field $\mathbf{H}$. Our results for $\mathbf{H}\perp[\bar{1}~1~0]$ and a temperature of $T=0.14(1)$ K show that the $(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},\frac{3}{2})$ magnetic diffraction peak can be described by the same two-peak lineshape found for $μ_{0}H=0$ T below the Néel temperature of $T_{\text{N}}=0.4$ K. Both components of the peak exist for $μ_{0}H\lesssim1.4 T$, which is well past the AFM phase boundary determined from our new resistivity data. Using neutron diffraction data taken at $T=0.13(2)$ K for $\mathbf{H}\parallel[0~0~1]$ or $[1~1~0]$, we show that domains of short-range AFM order change size throughout the previously determined AFM and non-Fermi liquid regions of the phase diagram, and that the appearance of a magnetic diffraction peak at $(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2})$ at $μ_{0}H\approx0.4$ T signals canting of the ordered magnetic moment away from $[1~1~1]$. The continued broadness of the magnetic diffraction peaks under a magnetic field and their persistence across the AFM phase boundary established by detailed transport and thermodynamic experiments present an interesting quandary concerning the nature of YbBiPt's electronic ground state.

We report the high-field induced magnetic phases and phase diagram of a high quality \urxrs~single crystal prepared using a modified Czochralski method. Our study, that combines high-field magnetization and electrical resistivity measurements, shows for fields applied along the $c$-axis direction three field-induced magnetic phase transitions at $μ_{0} H_{c1}$ = 21.60 T, $μ_{0} H_{c2}$ = 37.90 T and $μ_{0} H_{c3}$ = 38.25 T, respectively. In agreement with a microscopic up-up-down arrangement of the U magnetic moments the phase above $H_{c1}$ has a magnetization of about one third of the saturated value. In contrast the phase between $H_{c2}$ and $H_{c3}$ has a magnetization that is a factor of two lower than above the $H_{c3}$, where a polarized Fermi-liquid state with a saturated moment $M_{s}$ $\approx$ 2.1 $μ_{B}$/U is realized. Most of the respective transitions are reflected in the electrical resistivity as sudden drastic changes. Most notably, the phase between $H_{c1}$ and $H_{c2}$ exhibits substantially larger values. As the temperature increases, transitions smear out and disappear above $\approx$ 15 K. However, a substantial magnetoresistance is observed even at temperatures as high as 80 K. Due to a strong uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy a very small field effect is observed for fields apllied perpendicular to the $c$-axis direction.

The triangular spin lattice of NiBr$_{2}$ is a canonical example of a frustrated helimagnet that shows a temperature-driven phase transition from a collinear commensurate antiferromagnetic structure to an incommensurate spin helix on cooling. Employing neutron diffraction, bulk magnetization, and magnetic susceptibility measurements, we have studied the f\hspace*{.5pt}ield-induced magnetic states of the NiBr$_{2}$ single crystal. Experimental f\hspace*{.5pt}indings enable us to recapitalize the driving forces of the spin spiral ordering in the triangular spin-lattice systems, in general. Neutron diffraction data conf\hspace*{.5pt}irms, at low temperature below T$_{\rm m}$ = 22.8(1) K, the presence of diffraction satellites characteristic of an incommensurate magnetic state, which are symmetrically arranged around main magnetic reflections that evolve just below T$_{\rm N}$ = 44.0(1) K. Interestingly, a f\hspace*{.5pt}ield-induced transition from the incommensurate to commensurate spin phase has been demonstrated that enforces spin helix to restore the high temperature compensated antiferromagnetic structure. This spin reorientation can be described as a spin-flop transition in the (\hbox{$a$--$b$}) basal plane of a triangular spin lattice system. These f\hspace*{.5pt}indings offer a new pathway to control the spin helix in incommensurate phases that are currently considered having high technical implications in the next-generation data storage devices.

The Jahn-Teller distortion leads to a structural transition and a related emergence of three twinned monoclinic domains below the structural phase transition. This transition is highly dynamic over an extended temperature range for $A$ = Sr. We have investigated mixed compounds Ba$_{3-x}$Sr$_{x}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$ with $x=2.9$ and $x=2.8$ by means of X-ray and neutron diffraction, Raman scattering and calorimetry. Based on the obtained evolution of the phonon frequencies, we find a distinct suppression of the orbital-lattice fluctuation regime with increasing Ba content. This stands in contrast to the linear behaviour exhibited by unit cell volumes, atomic positions and intradimer spin-spin exchange interactions.

NpPdSn orders antiferromagnetically below the Néel temperature $T_N$ = 19 K and shows localized magnetism of Np$^{3+}$ ion with a a doubly degenerate ground state. In the magnetic state the electrical resistivity and heat capacity are characterized by electron-magnon scattering with spin-waves spectrum typical of anisotropic antiferromagnets. Such an insulator-metal transition is accompanied by changes in both lattice and magnetic structures. Our findings have important implications because a magnetic field usually stabilizes the insulating ground state in a Mott-Hubbard system, thus calling for a deeper theoretical study to reexamine the magnetic field tuning of Mott systems with magnetic and electronic instabilities and spin-lattice-charge coupling. This study further provides a model approach to search for CMR systems other than manganites, such as Mott insulators in the vicinity of the boundary between competing phases.

Our neutron study combined with high-field magnetization, shows that the magnetic phase above the first metamagnetic transition at Hc1 = 21.6 T has an uncompensated commensurate antiferromagnetic structure with propagation vector Q2 = ( 2/3 0 0) possessing two single-Q domains. U moments of 1.45 (9) muB directed along the c axis are arranged in an up-up-down sequence propagating along the a axis, in agreement with bulk measurements. The U magnetic form factor at high fields is consistent with both the U3+ and U4+ type. The low field short-range order that emerges from the pure URu2Si2 due to Rh-doping is initially strengthened by the field but disappears in the field-induced phase. The tetragonal symmetry is preserved across the transition but the a axis lattice parameter increases already at low fields. Our results are in agreement with itinerant electron model with 5f states forming bands pinned in the vicinity of the Fermi surface that is significantly reconstructed by the applied magnetic field.

The magnetic structure is found to be unchanged with a propagation vector $Q_\mathrm{AF} \approx (0.5~0~0.35)$ for all Ni concentrations $x$ up to $x_c \approx 0.14$. Upon approaching the quantum critical concentration $x_c$, the ordered moment vanishes linearly with Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$, in good agreement with CePdAl under hydrostatic pressure. We present a systematic study of the phase diagram of LiHo$_x$Y$_{1-x}$F$_4$ ($0.25<x<1$) Ising ferromagnets obtained from neutron scattering measurements and mean-field calculations. We show that while the thermal phase transition decreases linearly with dilution, as predicted by mean-field theory, the critical transverse field at the quantum critical point is suppressed much faster. This behavior is related to competition between off-diagonal dipolar coupling and quantum fluctuations that are tuned by doping and applied field, respectively. In this paper, we quantify the deviation of the experimental results from mean-field predictions, with the aim that this analysis can be used in future theoretical efforts towards a quantitative description.

We report the crystal structure and highly-anisotropic magnetic, transport and thermal properties of an exceptionally good single crystal of U(Ru0.92Rh0.08)2Si2 prepared using a modified Czochralski method. Our study, that also includes neutron diffraction results, shows all the heavy-fermion signatures of pristine URu2Si2 , however, the superconductivity, hidden order and remanent weak antiferromagnetic orders are absent. Instead, the ground state of the doped system can be classified as a spin liquid that preserves the heavy-fermion character. U(Ru0.92Rh0.08)2Si2 exhibits a short-range magnetic order distinguished by reflections of a Lorentzian profile at qIII = (1/2 1/2 1/2) positions that disappear above approx. 15 K. The short-range order seems to be a precursor of a long-range magnetic order that occurs with higher Rh concentration. We indicate that these short-range fluctuations involve, at least partially, inelastic scattering processes.

We report on a microscopic study of the evolution of ferromagnetism in the Ru substituted ferromagnetic superconductor (FM SC) UCoGe crystallizing in the orthorhombic TiNiSi-type structure. For that purpose, two single crystals with composition UCo0.97Ru0.03Ge and UCo0.88Ru0.12Ge have been prepared and characterized by magnetization, AC susceptibility, specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements. Both compounds have been found to order ferromagnetically below TC = 6.5 K and 7.5 K, respectively, which is considerably higher than the TC = 3 K of the parent compound UCoGe. The higher values of TC are accompanied by enhanced values of the spontaneous moment mspont. = 0.11 mB/f.u. and mspont. = 0.21 mB/f.u., respectively in comparison to the tiny spontaneous moment of UCoGe (about 0.07mB/f.u.). No sign of superconductivity was detected in either compound. The magnetic moments of the samples were investigated on the microscopic scale using polarized neutron diffraction (PND) and for UCo0.88Ru0.12Ge also by soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The analysis of the PND results indicates that the observed enhancement of ferromagnetism is mainly due to the growth of the orbital part of the uranium 5f moment mL(U), reflecting a gradual localization of the 5f electrons with Ru substitution. In addition, the parallel orientation of the U and Co moments has been established in both substituted compounds. The results are discussed and compared with related isostructural ferromagnetic UTX compounds (T - transition metals, X - Si, Ge) in the context of a varying degree of the 5f-ligand hybridization.

Both single crystals were investigated by polarized neutron diffraction (PND) at low temperatures in magnetic fields and the latter one also by the soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) method. UCo0.96Ru0.03Ge and UCo0.88Ru0.12Ge have been found ordering ferromagnetically below the Curie temperature TC = 6 K and 8.5 K, respectively, which are considerable higher than TC = 3 K of UCoGe. The increase of TC is accompanied by enhancement of the spontaneous moment to ms = 0.11 mB/f.u. and ms = 0.21 mB/f.u., respectively. The analysis of the PND results assigns the ferromagnetism enhancement mainly to the growth of the orbital part of uranium 5 f moment. In contrast to the published results of PND study of the parent UCoGe, we have found parallel orientation of the U and Co moments in both doped compounds. Evolution of magnetic characteristics with Ru concentration is discussed within a scenario considering the varying 5 f-ligand hybridization as the key mechanism.

We report on the spin densities in CeRuSn determined at elevated and at low temperatures using polarized neutron diffraction. At 285 K, where the CeRuSn crystal structure, commensurate with the CeCoAl type, contains two different crystallographic Ce sites, we observe that one Ce site is clearly more susceptible to the applied magnetic field whereas the other is hardly polarizable. This finding clearly documents that distnictly different local environment of the two Ce sites causes the Ce ions to split into magnetic Ce3+ and non-magnetic Ce(4-delta)+ valence states. With lowering the temperature, the crystal structure transforms to a structure incommensurately modulated along the c axis. This leads to new inequivalent crystallographic Ce sites resulting in a re-distribution of spin densities. Our analysis using the simplest structural approximant shows that in this metallic system Ce ions co-exist in different valence states. Localized 4f states that fulfill the third Hund's rule are found to be close to the ideal Ce3+ state (at sites with the largest Ce-Ru interatomic distances) whereas Ce(4-delta)+ valence states are found to be itinerant and situated at Ce sites with much shorter Ce-Ru distances. The similarity to the famous alpha-gamma transition in elemental cerium is discussed.

The magnetic phase diagram of the tetragonal Ho$_2$RhIn$_8$ compound has similar features to many related systems, revealing a zero magnetic field AF1 and a field-induced AF2 phases. Details of the magnetic order in the AF2 phase were not reported yet for any of the related compounds. In addition, only the Ho$_2$RhIn$_8$ phase diagram contains a small region of the incommensurate zero-field AF3 phase. We have performed a number of neutron diffraction experiments on single crystals of Ho$_2$RhIn$_8$ using several diffractometers including experiments in both horizontal and vertical magnetic fields up to 4 T. We present details of the magnetic structures in all magnetic phases of the rich phase diagram of Ho$_2$RhIn$_8$. The Ho magnetic moments point along the tetragonal $c$ axis in every phase. The ground-state AF1 phase is characterized by propagation vector $\textbf{k}$ = (1/2, 0, 0). The more complex ferrimagnetic AF2 phase is described by four propagation vectors $\textbf{k}_{0}$ = (0, 0, 0), $\textbf{k}_{1}$ = (1/2, 0, 0), $\textbf{k}_{2}$ = (0, 1/2, 1/2), $\textbf{k}_{3}$ = (1/2, 1/2, 1/2). The magnetic structure in the AF3 phase is incommensurate with $\textbf{k}_{AF3}$ = (0.5, $δ$, 0). Our results are consistent with theoretical calculations based on crystal field theory.

CeRuSn exhibits an extraordinary room temperature structure at 300~K with coexistence of two types of Ce ions, namely trivalent Ce$^{3+}$ and intermediate valent Ce$^{(4-δ)+}$, in a metallic environment. The ordered arrangement of these two Ce types on specific crystallographic sites results in a doubling of the unit cell along the $c$-axis with respect to the basic monoclinic CeCoAl-type structure. Below room temperature, structural modulation transitions with very broad hysteresis have been reported from measurements of various bulk properties. X-ray diffraction revealed that at low temperatures the doubling of the CeCoAl type structure is replaced by a different modulated ground state, approximating a near tripling of the basic CeCoAl cell. The transition is accompanied by a significant contraction of the $c$ axis. We present new x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy data at the Ce L$_{3}$ absorption edge, measured on a freshly cleaved surface of a CeRuSn single crystal. In contrast to a previous report, the new data exhibit small but significant variations as function of temperature that are consistent with a transition of a fraction of Ce$^{3+}$ ions to the intermediate valence state, analogous to the $γ\rightarrow α$ transition in elemental cerium, when cooling through the structural transitions of CeRuSn. Such results in a valence-modulated state.

We describe the scattering in terms of a two-Gaussian peak fit, which consists of a narrower component that appears below $T_{\rm{N}}~\approx 0.4$ K and corresponds to a magnetic correlation length of $ξ_{\rm{n}} \approx$ 80 $\rmÅ$, and a broad component that persists up to $T^*\approx$ 0.7 K and corresponds to antiferromagnetic correlations extending over $ξ_{\rm{b}} \approx$ 20 $\rmÅ$. Our results illustrate the fragile magnetic order present in YbBiPt and provide a path forward for microscopic investigations of the ground states and fluctuations associated with the purported quantum critical point in this heavy-fermion compound.

Three unique phases in addition to the Ising ferromagnet LiHoF$_4$ and the XY anti-ferromagnet LiErF$_4$ have been identified. Below $x=0.86$ an embedded spin-glass phase is observed, where a spin-glass exists within the ferromagnetic structure. Below $x=0.57$ an Ising spin-glass is observed consisting of frozen needle-like clusters. For $x \sim 0.3 - 0.1$ an antiferromagnetically coupled spin-glass occurs. A reduction of $T_C(x)$ for the ferromagnet is observed which disobeys the mean-field predictions that worked for LiHo$_x$Y$_{1-x}$F$_4$.

The control of domains in ferroic devices lies at the heart of their potential for technological applications. Multiferroic materials offer another level of complexity as domains can be either or both of a ferroelectric and magnetic nature. Here we report the discovery of a novel magnetic state in the orthoferrite TbFeO3 using neutron diffraction under an applied magnetic field. This state has a very long incommensurate period ranging from 340 Angstrom at 3K to 2700 Angstrom at the lowest temperatures and exhibits an anomalously large number of higher-order harmonics, allowing us to identify it with the periodic array of sharp domain walls of Tb spins separated by many lattice constants. The Tb domain walls interact by exchanging spin waves propagating through the Fe magnetic sublattice. The resulting Yukawa-like force, familiar from particle physics, has a finite range that determines the period of the incommensurate state.

On the basis of neutron polarimetry measurement performed in strictly zero field on a single-crystal at ambient pressure, we claim that the SC phase does exist in spite of lack of long-range FM order. Moreover, the SC regime dominates to the paramagnetic (PM) state in small external magnetic fields. Above the critical SC temperature, TSC = 0.64 K, the zero-field state is characterized by a regime with strong FM spin fluctuations, suggesting the proximity of the FM quantum critical point. We present an ambient-pressure phase diagram of UCoGe based on our resistivity, magnetization and neutron polarimetry results.

We report a polarized neutron diffraction study conducted to reveal the nature of the weak ferromagnetic moment in the superconducting ferromagnet UCoGe. We find that the ordered moment in the normal phase in low magnetic fields (B // c) is predominantly located at the U atom and has a magnitude of about 0.1 muB at 3 T, in agreement with bulk magnetization data. By increasing the magnetic field the U moment grows to about 0.3 muB in 12 T and most remarkably, induces a substantial moment (about 0.2 muB) on the Co atom directed antiparallel to the U moment. The anomalous polarizability of the Co 3d orbitals is unique among uranium intermetallics and might reflect the proximity to a magnetic quantum critical point of UCoGe in zero field.

The iron chalcogenide Fe1+y(Te1-xSex) is structurally the simplest of the Fe-based superconductors. Although the Fermi surface is similar to iron pnictides, the parent compound Fe1+yTe exhibits antiferromagnetic order with in-plane magnetic wave-vector (pi, 0). This contrasts the pnictide parent compounds where the magnetic order has an in-plane magnetic wave-vector (pi, pi) that connects hole and electron parts of the Fermi surface. Despite these differences, both the pnictide and chalcogenide Fe-superconductors exhibit superconducting spin resonances around (pi, pi), suggesting a common symmetry for their superconducting order parameter. A central question in this burgeoning field is therefore how (pi, pi) superconductivity can emerge from a (pi, 0) magnetic instability. Here, we report that the magnetic soft mode evolving from the (pi, 0)-type magnetic long-range order is associated with weak charge carrier localization. Bulk superconductivity occurs only as the magnetic mode at (pi, pi) becomes dominant upon doping. Our results suggest a common magnetic origin for superconductivity in iron chalcogenide and pnictide superconductors.

We have investigated magnetic field dependences of a ferroelectric incommensurate-helimagnetic order in a trigonal magneto-electric (ME) multiferroic CuFe1-xAlxO2 with x=0.015, which exhibits the ferroelectric phase as a ground state, by means of neutron diffraction, magnetization and dielectric polarization measurements under magnetic fields applied along various directions. From the present results, we have established the H-T magnetic phase diagrams for the three principal directions of magnetic fields; (i) parallel to the c axis, (ii) parallel to the helical axis, and (iii) perpendicular to the c and the helical axes. While the previous dielectric polarization (P) measurements on CuFe1-xGaxO2 with x=0.035 have demonstrated that the magnetic field dependence of the `magnetic domain structure' results in distinct magnetic field responses of P [S. Seki et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 103 237601 (2009)], the present study have revealed that the anisotropic magnetic field dependence of the ferroelectric helimagnetic order `in each magnetic domain' can be also a source of a variety of magnetic field responses of P in CuFe1-xAxO2 systems (A=Al, Ga).

High temperature susceptibility and single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements are used to deduce the non-collinear magnetic structure, dominant exchange interactions and orbital configurations. The results suggest that at high temperatures CaV$_2$O$_4$ behaves as a Haldane chain, but at low temperatures, orbital ordering lifts the frustration and it becomes a spin-1 ladder.

Single crystal neutron and high-energy x-ray diffraction have identified the phase lines corresponding to transitions between the ambient-pressure tetragonal (T), the antiferromagnetic orthorhombic (O) and the non-magnetic collapsed tetragonal (cT) phases of CaFe2As2. We find no evidence of additional structures for pressures up to 2.5 GPa (at 300 K). Both the T-cT and O-cT transitions exhibit significant hysteresis effects and we demonstrate that coexistence of the O and cT phases can occur if a non-hydrostatic component of pressure is present. Measurements of the magnetic diffraction peaks show no change in the magnetic structure or ordered moment as a function of pressure in the O phase and we find no evidence of magnetic ordering in the cT phase. Band structure calculations show that the transition results in a strong decrease of the iron 3d density of states at the Fermi energy, consistent with a loss of the magnetic moment.

We have performed synchrotron radiation X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements on magnetoelectric multiferroic CuFe1-xAlxO2 (x=0.0155), which has a proper helical magnetic structure with incommensurate propagation wave vector in the ferroelectric phase. The present measurements revealed that the ferroelectric phase is accompanied by lattice modulation with a wave number 2q, where q is the magnetic modulation wave number. We have calculated the Fourier spectrum of the spatial modulations in the local electric polarization using a microscopic model proposed by Arima [T. Arima, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 76, 073702 (2007)]. Comparing the experimental results with the calculation results, we found that the origin of the 2q-lattice modulation is not conventional magnetostriction but the variation in the metal-ligand hybridization between the magnetic Fe^3+ ions and ligand O^2- ions. Combining the present results with the results of a previous polarized neutron diffraction study [Nakajima et al., Phys. Rev. B 77 052401 (2008)], we conclude that the microscopic origin of the ferroelectricity in CuFe1-xAlxO2 is the variation in the metal-ligand hybridization with spin-orbit coupling.

Neutron diffraction was used to determine the crystal structure and magnetic ordering pattern of a La2CuO4 single crystal, with and without applied magnetic field. A previously unreported, subtle monoclinic distortion of the crystal structure away from the orthorhombic space group Bmab was detected. The distortion is also present in lightly Sr-doped crystals. A refinement of the crystal structure shows that the deviation from orthorhombic symmetry is predominantly determined by displacements of the apical oxygen atoms. An in-plane magnetic field is observed to drive a continuous reorientation of the copper spins from the orthorhombic b-axis to the c-axis, directly confirming predictions based on prior magnetoresistance and Raman scattering experiments. A spin-flop transition induced by a c-axis oriented field previously reported for non-stoichiometric La2CuO4 is also observed, but the transition field (11.5 T) is significantly larger than that in the previous work.

At intermediate composition where antiferromagnetism coexists with superconductivity, two types of magnetic order are observed: the incommensurate one of CeRhIn5 and a new, commensurate antiferromagnetism that orders separately. The coexistence of f-electron superconductivity with two distinct f-electron magnetic orders is unique among unconventional superconductors, adding a new variety to the usual coexistence found in magnetic superconductors.

We present a neutron diffraction study of the magnetic structure of single crystal PrO2 under applied fields of 0-6 T. As the field is increased, changes are observed in the magnetic Bragg intensities. These changes are found to be irreversible when the field is reduced, but the original intensities can be recovered by heating to T > 122 K, then re-cooling in zero field. The antiferromagnetic ordering temperature TN = 13.5 K and the magnetic periodicity are unaffected by the applied field. We also report measurements of the magnetic susceptibility of single crystal PrO2 under applied fields of 0-7 T. These show strong anisotropy, as well as an anomaly at T = 122 +/- 2 K which coincides with the temperature TD = 120 +/- 2 K at which a structural distortion occurs. For fields applied along the [100] direction the susceptibility increases irreversibly with field in the temperature range TN < T < TD. However, for fields along [110] the susceptibility is independent of field in this range. We propose structural domain alignment, which strongly influences the formation of magnetic domains below TN, as the mechanism behind these changes.

Extensive X-ray and neutron scattering experiments and additional transmission electron microscopy results reveal the partial decomposition of Nd2-xCexCuO4 (NCCO) in a low-oxygen-fugacity environment such as that typically realized during the annealing process required to create a superconducting state. Unlike a typical situation in which a disordered secondary phase results in diffuse powder scattering, a serendipitous match between the in-plane lattice constant of NCCO and the lattice constant of one of the decomposition products, (Nd,Ce)2O3, causes the secondary phase to form an oriented, quasi-two-dimensional epitaxial structure. Consequently, diffraction peaks from the secondary phase appear at rational positions (H,K,0) in the reciprocal space of NCCO. Additionally, because of neodymium paramagnetism, the application of a magnetic field increases the low-temperature intensity observed at these positions via neutron scattering. Such effects may mimic the formation of a structural superlattice or the strengthening of antiferromagnetic order of NCCO, but the intrinsic mechanism may be identified through careful and systematic experimentation. For typical reduction conditions, the (Nd,Ce)2O3 volume fraction is ~1%, and the secondary-phase layers exhibit long-range order parallel to the NCCO CuO2 sheets and are 50-100 angstromsthick. The presence of the secondary phase should also be taken into account in the analysis of other experiments on NCCO, such as transport measurements.

We have measured the effect of a c-axis aligned magnetic field on the long-range magnetic order of insulating Nd2CuO4, as-grown nonsuperconducting and superconducting Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4. On cooling from room temperature, Nd2CuO4 goes through a series of antiferromagnetic (AF) phase transitions with different noncollinear spin structures. In all phases of Nd2CuO4, we find that the applied c-axis field induces a canting of the AF order but does not alter the basic zero-field noncollinear spin structures. Similar behavior is also found in as-grown nonsuperconducting Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4. These results contrast dramatically with those of superconducting Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4, where a c-axis aligned magnetic field induces a static, anomalously conducting, long-range ordered AF state. We confirm that the annealing process necessary to make superconducting Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4 also induces epitaxial, three-dimensional long-range ordered cubic (Nd,Ce)2O3 as an impurity phase. In addition, the annealing process makes a series of quasi two-dimensional superlattice reflections associated with lattice distortions of Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4 in the CuO2 plane. While the application of a magnetic field will induce a net moment in the impurity phase, we determine its magnitude and eliminate this as a possibility for the observed magnetic field-induced effect in superconducting Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4.

We have measured the magnetic field dependence of the ordered antiferromagnetic moment and the magnetic excitations in the heavy-fermion superconductor URu2Si2 for fields up to 17 Tesla applied along the tetragonal c axis, using neutron scattering. The decrease of the magnetic intensity of the tiny moment with increasing field does not follow a simple power law, but shows a clear inflection point, indicating that the moment disappears first at the metamagnetic transition at ~40 T. This suggests that the moment m is connected to a hidden order parameter Phi which belongs to the same irreducible representation breaking time-reversal symmetry. The magnetic excitation gap at the antiferromagnetic zone center Q=(1,0,0) increases continuously with increasing field, while that at Q=(1.4,0,0) is nearly constant. This field dependence is opposite to that of the gap extracted from specific-heat data.

In the high-field phase a lattice of solitons forms, with both structural and magnetic components, and these have been studied using neutron scattering techniques. Our results provide direct evidence for a long-ranged magnetic soliton structure which has both staggered and uniform magnetizations, and with amplitudes that are broadly in accord with theoretical estimates. The magnetic soliton width, $Γ$, and the field dependence of the incommensurability, $δk_{sp}$, are found to agree well with theoretical predictions.
