Spin wave dispersion in the frustrated fcc type-III antiferromagnet MnS$_2$ has been determined by inelastic neutron scattering using a triple-axis spectrometer. Existence of multiple spin wave branches, with significant separation between high-energy and low-energy modes highlighting the intrinsic magnetic frustration effect on the fcc lattice, is explained in terms of a spin wave analysis carried out for the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model for this $S=5/2$ system with nearest and next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions. Comparison of the calculated dispersion with spin wave measurement also reveals small suppression of magnetic frustration resulting from reduced exchange interaction between frustrated spins, possibly arising from anisotropic deformation of the cubic structure.

The magnetic properties of the cobaltite {\BCAO}, a good realization of the quasi two-dimensional frustrated honeycomb-lattice system with strong planar anisotropy, have been reinvestigated by means of spherical neutron polarimetry with CRYOPAD. From accurate measurements of polarization matrices both on elastic and inelastic contributions as a function of the scattering vector {\bf{Q}}, we have been able to determine the low-temperature magnetic structure of {\BCAO} and reveal its puzzling in-plane spin dynamics. Surprisingly, the ground-state structure (described by an incommensurate propagation vector ${\bf{k}}_{1}=(k_{x}, 0, k_{z}$), with $k_{x}=0.270{\pm}0.005$ and $k_{z} \approx -1.31$) appears to be a quasi-collinear structure, and not a simple helix, as previously determined. In addition, our results have revealed the existence of a non-negligible out-of-plane moment component $ \approx 0.25μ_{B}$/Co$^{2+}$, representing about 10\% of the in-plane component, as demonstrated by the presence of finite off-diagonal elements $P_{yz}$ and $P_{zy}$ of the polarization matrix, both on elastic and inelastic magnetic contributions. Despite a clear evidence of the existence of a slightly inelastic contribution of structural origin superimposed to the magnetic excitations at the scattering vectors ${\bf{Q}}=(0.27, 0, 3.1)$ and ${\bf{Q}}=(0.73, 0, 0.8)$ (energy transfer $ΔE \approx 2.3$ meV), no strong inelastic nuclear-magnetic interference terms could be detected so far, meaning that the nuclear and magnetic degrees of freedom have very weak cross-correlations. The strong inelastic $P_{yz}$ and $P_{zy}$ matrix elements can be understood by assuming that the magnetic excitations in {\BCAO} are spin waves associated with trivial anisotropic precessions of the magnetic moments involved in the canted incommensurate structure.

We use neutron polarization analysis to study spin excitation anisotropy in the optimal-isovalent-doped superconductor BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2 (Tc = 30 K). Different from optimally hole and electron-doped BaFe2As2, where there is a clear spin excitation anisotropy in the paramagnetic tetragonal state well above Tc, we find no spin excitation anisotropy for energies above 2 meV in the normal state of BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2. Upon entering the superconducting state, significant spin excitation anisotropy develops at the antiferromagnetic (AF) zone center QAF = (1, 0, L = odd), while magnetic spectrum is isotropy at the zone boundary Q = (1, 0, L = even). By comparing temperature, wave vector, and polarization dependence of the spin excitation anisotropy in BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2 and hole-doped Ba0.67K0.33Fe2As2 (Tc = 38 K), we conclude that such anisotropy arises from spin-orbit coupling and is associated with the nearby AF order and superconductivity.

We investigated the crystal structure and lattice excitations of the ternary intermetallic stannide Ca3Ir4Sn13 using neutron and x-ray scattering techniques. For T > T* ~ 38 K the x-ray diffraction data can be satisfactorily refined using the space group Pm-3n. Below T* the crystal structure is modulated with a propagation vector of q = (1/2, 1/2, 0). This may arise from a merohedral twinning in which three tetragonal domains overlap to mimic a higher symmetry, or from a doubling of the cubic unit cell. Neutron diffraction and neutron spectroscopy results show that the structural transition at T* is of a second-order, and that it is well described by mean-field theory. Inelastic neutron scattering data point towards a displacive structural transition at T* arising from the softening of a low-energy phonon mode with an energy gap of Delta(120 K) = 1.05 meV. Using density functional theory the soft phonon mode is identified as a 'breathing' mode of the Sn12 icosahedra and is consistent with the thermal ellipsoids of the Sn2 atoms found by single crystal diffraction data.

We report a comprehensive investigation of the lattice dynamics of URu$_2$Si$_2$ as a function of temperature using Raman scattering, optical conductivity and inelastic neutron scattering measurements as well as theoretical {\it ab initio} calculations. The main effects on the optical phonon modes are related to Kondo physics. The B$_{1g}$ ($Γ_3$ symmetry) phonon mode slightly softens below $\sim$100~K, in connection with the previously reported softening of the elastic constant, $C_{11}-C_{12}$, of the same symmetry, both observations suggesting a B$_{1g}$ symmetry-breaking instability in the Kondo regime. Through optical conductivity, we detect clear signatures of strong electron-phonon coupling, with temperature dependent spectral weight and Fano line shape of some phonon modes. Surprisingly, the line shapes of two phonon modes, E$_u$(1) and A$_{2u}$(2), show opposite temperature dependencies. The A$_{2u}$(2) mode loses its Fano shape below 150 K, whereas the E$_u$(1) mode acquires it below 100~K, in the Kondo cross-over regime. This may point out to momentum-dependent Kondo physics. By inelastic neutron scattering measurements, we have drawn the full dispersion of the phonon modes between 300~K and 2~K. No remarkable temperature dependence has been obtained including through the hidden order transition. {\it Ab initio} calculations with the spin-orbit coupling are in good agreement with the data except for a few low energy branches with propagation in the (a,b) plane.

In previous unpolarized INS work, spin excitations in C15 were found to have a dispersive sharp resonance near Er1=3.25 meV and a broad dispersionless mode at Er2=6 meV. Our neutron polarization analysis reveals that the dispersive resonance in C15 is highly anisotropic and polarized along the a- and c-axis, while the dispersionless mode is isotropic similar to that of C45. Since the a-axis polarized spin excitations of the anisotropic resonance appear below Tc, our data suggests that the itinerant electrons contributing to the magnetism are also coupled to the superconductivity.

The time dependence of switching multiferroic domains in MnWO$_4$ has been studied by time-resolved polarized neutron diffraction. Inverting an external electric field inverts the chiral magnetic component within rise times ranging between a few and some tens of milliseconds in perfect agreement with macroscopic techniques. There is no evidence for any faster process in the inversion of the chiral magnetic structure. The time dependence is well described by a temperature-dependent rise time suggesting a well-defined process of domain reversion. As expected, the rise times decrease when heating towards the upper boundary of the ferroelectric phase. However, switching also becomes faster upon cooling towards the lower boundary, which is associated with a first-order phase transition.

Three distinct excitation components are identified, with spins fluctuating along the c-axis, perpendicular to the ordering direction in the ab-plane, and parallel to the ordering direction. While the first two "transverse" components can be described by a linear spin-wave theory with magnetic anisotropy and inter-layer coupling, the third "longitudinal" component is generically incompatible with the local moment picture. It points towards a contribution of itinerant electrons to the magnetism already in the parent compound of this family of Fe-based superconductors.

We describe neutron scattering experiments performed to investigate the magnetic order and dynamics of half-doped La1.5Sr0.5CoO4. This layered perovskite exhibits a near-ideal checkerboard pattern of Co2+/Co3+ charge order at temperatures below ~ 800 K. Magnetic correlations are observed at temperatures below ~ 60 K but static magnetic order only becomes established at 31 K, a temperature at which a kink is observed in the susceptibility. On warming above 31 K we observed a change in the magnetic correlations which we attribute either to a spin canting or to a change in the proportion of inequivalent magnetic domains. The magnetic excitation spectrum is dominated by an intense band extending above a gap of approximately 3 meV up to a maximum energy of 16 meV. A weaker band exists in the energy range 20-30 meV. We show that the excitation spectrum is in excellent quantitative agreement with the predictions of a spin-wave theory generalized to include the full magnetic degrees of freedom of high-spin Co2+ ions in an axially distorted crystal field, coupled by Heisenberg exchange interactions. The magnetic order is found to be stabilized by dominant antiferromagnetic Co2+ -- Co2+ interactions acting in a straight line through Co3+. No evidence is found for magnetic scattering from the Co3+ ions, supporting the view that Co3+ is in the S = 0 state in this material.

Much of what we know about the electronic states of high-temperature superconductors is due to photoemission and scanning tunneling spectroscopy studies of the compound Bi2212. The demonstration of well-defined quasiparticles in the superconducting state has encouraged many theorists to apply the conventional theory of metals, Fermi-liquid theory, to the cuprates. In particular, the spin excitations observed by neutron scattering at energies below twice the superconducting gap energy are commonly believed to correspond to an excitonic state involving itinerant electrons. Here, we present the first measurements of the magnetic spectral weight of optimally-doped Bi2212 in absolute units. The lack of temperature dependence of the local spin susceptibility across the superconducting transition temperature, T_c, is incompatible with the itinerant calculations. Alternatively, the magnetic excitations could be due to local moments, as the magnetic spectrum is similar to that in LBCO where quasiparticles and local moments coexist.

Bulk magnetism in solids is fundamentally quantum mechanical in nature. Yet in many situations, including our everyday encounters with magnetic materials, quantum effects are masked, and it often suffices to think of magnetism in terms of the interaction between classical dipole moments. Whereas this intuition generally holds for ferromagnets, even as the size of the magnetic moment is reduced to that of a single electron spin (the quantum limit), it breaks down spectacularly for antiferromagnets, particularly in low dimensions. Considerable theoretical and experimental progress has been made in understanding quantum effects in one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets, but a complete experimental description of even simple two-dimensional antiferromagnets is lacking. Here we describe a comprehensive set of neutron scattering measurements that reveal a non-spin-wave continuum and strong quantum effects, suggesting entanglement of spins at short distances in the simplest of all two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets, the square lattice Heisenberg system.

At the incommensurate magnetic zone center of the spiral phase, we find three low-lying magnons whose character has been fully determined using neutron-polarization analysis. The excitation at the lowest energy is the sliding mode of the spiral, and two modes at 1.1 and 2.5meV correspond to rotations of the spiral rotation plane. These latter modes are expected to couple to the electric polarization. The 2.5meV-mode is in perfect agreement with recent infra-red-spectroscopy data giving strong support to its interpretation as an hybridized phonon-magnon excitation.

We have studied the spin anisotropy in spin-singlet ground state compounds and the magnetic chirality, as measured by inelastic polarized neutron scattering techniques, in the chain-sublattice of Sr14Cu24O41. In-plane and out of plane magnetic fluctuations are measured to be anisotropic and further discussed in the light of the current hypothesis of spin-orbit coupling. We show that under appropriate conditions of magnetic field and neutron polarization, the \textit{trivial} magnetic chirality selects only one of the Zeeman splitted triplet states for scattering and erases the other one that posses opposite helicity. Our analysis pertains to previous studies on dynamical magnetic chirality and chiral critical exponents, where the ground state is chiral itself, the so-called \textit{non-trivial} dynamical magnetic chirality. As it turns out, both \textit{trivial} and \textit{non-trivial} dynamical magnetic chirality have identical selection rules for inelastic polarized neutron scattering experiments and it is not at all evident that they can be distinguished in a paramagnetic compound.

The structural and magnetic properties of YVO3, NdVO3 and TbVO3 were investigated by single-crystal and powder neutron diffraction. YVO3 shows a structural phase transition at 200 K from an orthorhombic structure with the space group Pbnm to a monoclinic one with the space group P21/b. But supplementary high-resolution synchrotron diffraction experiments showed that the monoclinic distortion is extremely small. A group theoretical analysis shows that this magnetic state in the monoclinic phase is incompatible with the lattice structure, unless terms of higher than bilinear order in the spin operators are incorporated in the spin Hamiltonian. This observation is discussed in the light of recent theories invoking unusual many-body correlations between the vanadium t2g orbitals. A structural phase transition back to the orthorhombic space group Pbnm is observed upon cooling below 77 K. This transition is accompanied by a rearrangement of the magnetic structure into a mode compatible with the lattice structure. The crystal structures of NdVO3 and TbVO3 are closely similar to that of YVO3. However, only a single magnetic phase transition was found in the vanadium sublattice down to 9.5 K. Below 60 K the magnetic moments of the Nd- and Tb-ions are gradually polarized by the ordered vanadium moments. Below 11 K, we found a noncollinear order of the terbium moments.

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the S=1 quasi-one-dimensional bond-alternating antiferromagnet Ni(C9D24N4)(NO2)ClO4 have been performed under magnetic fields below and above a critical field Hc at which the energy gap closes. Normal field dependece of Zeeman splitting of the excited triplet modes below Hc has been observed, but the highest mode is unusually small and smears out with increasing field. This can be explained by an interaction with a low-lying two magnon continuum at q=pi that is present in dimerized chains but absent in uniform ones. Above Hc, we find only one excited mode, in stark contrast with three massive excitations previously observed in the structurally similar Haldane-gap material NDMAP [A. Zheludev et al., Phys. Rev. B 68, 134438 (2003)].

Its intensity is two orders of magnitude weaker than those due to the basic magnetic structure [O. Zaharko et al., Phys. Rev. B 68, 214401 (2003)]. The peak has a width of the other Bragg reflections below TN, but widens abruptly at T = TN with simultaneous increase of intensity. Correlation length just above TN is of the order of 70 A. The peak intensity decreases to zero at T = 7 K with no visible anomaly at the antiferro-quadrupolar ordering temperature TQ = 3.3 K. The features of this magnetic ordering are typical for the itinerant magnetism with 5d electron of Ce3+ [Yu.S. Grushko et al., phys. stat. sol. (b) 128, 591 (1985)] being involved.

The locus and the spectral weight of these modes can be understood by considering the momentum shape of the electron-hole spin-flip continuum of d-wave superconductors. This provides new insight into the interplay between collective spin excitations and the continuum of electron-hole excitations.

We present a neutron scattering study of stripe correlations measured on a single crystal of La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$. Within the low-temperature-tetragonal (LTT) phase, superlattice peaks indicative of spin and charge stripe order are observed below 50 K. For excitation energies $\hbarω\le12$ meV, we have characterized the magnetic excitations that emerge from the incommensurate magnetic superlattice peaks. In the ordered state, these excitations are similar to spin waves. Following these excitations as a function of temperature, we find that there is relatively little change in the {\bf Q}-integrated dynamical spin susceptibility for $\hbarω\sim10$ meV as stripe order disappears and then as the structure transforms from LTT to the low-temperature-orthorhombic (LTO) phase. The {\bf Q}-integrated signal at lower energies changes more dramatically through these transitions, as it must in a transformation from an ordered to a disordered state. We argue that the continuous evolution through the transitions provides direct evidence that the incommensurate spin excitations in the disordered state are an indicator of dynamical charge stripes. An interesting feature of the thermal evolution is a variation in the incommensurability of the magnetic scattering. Similar behavior is observed in measurements on a single crystal of La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.075}$Sr$_{0.050}$CuO$_{4}$; maps of the scattered intensity in a region centered on the antiferromagnetic wave vector and measured at $\hbarω=4$ meV are well reproduced by a model of disordered stripes with a temperature-dependent mixture of stripe spacings. We discuss the relevance of our results to understanding the magnetic excitations in cuprate superconductors.

The modes differ in their symmetry with respect to exchange between adjacent copper oxide layers. Counterparts of the mode with odd symmetry, but not the one with even symmetry, had been observed before at lower doping levels. The observation of the even mode resolves a long-standing puzzle, and the spectral weight ratio of both modes yields an estimate of the onset of particle-hole spin-flip excitations.

In both compounds, a first order transition is evidenced, as well as spin dynamics persisting down to the 20mK range. The transition however has a quite different character in the two materials: whereas that in Gd2Sn2O7$ (at 1K) is a magnetic transition towards long range order, that in Yb2Ti2O7 (at 0.24K) is reminiscent of the liquid-gas transition, in the sense that it involves a 4 orders of magnitude drop of the spin fluctuation frequency; furthermore, no long range order is observed. These unusual features we attribute to frustration of the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction in the pyrochlore lattice.

An unusual spin excitation mode observed by neutron scattering has inspired numerous theoretical studies of the interplay between charged quasiparticles and collective spin excitations in the copper oxide high temperature superconductors. The mode has thus far only been observed in materials with crystal structures consisting of copper oxide bilayers, and it is notably absent in the single-layer compound La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4+δ}$. Neutron scattering data now show that the mode is present in Tl$_2$Ba$_2$Cu$_{6+δ}$, a single-layer compound with T$_c$ $\sim$ 90 K, thus demonstrating that it is a generic feature of the copper oxide superconductors, independent of the layer sequence. This restricts the theoretical models for the origin of the resonant mode and its role in the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity.

A comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering study of magnetic excitations in the near-optimally doped high-temperature superconductor ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.85}}$ is presented. The spin correlations in the normal state are commensurate with the crystal lattice, and the intensity is peaked around the wave vector characterizing the antiferromagnetic state of the insulating precursor ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6}}$. Profound modifications of the spin excitation spectrum appear abruptly below the superconducting transition temperature, $\rm T_C$, where a commensurate resonant mode and a set of weaker incommensurate peaks develop. The data are consistent with models based on an underlying two-dimensional Fermi surface that predict a continuous, downward dispersion relation connecting the resonant mode and the incommensurate excitations. The magnetic incommensurability in the ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+x}}$ system is thus not simply related to that of another high temperature superconductor, ${\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_{4}}$, where incommensurate peaks persist well above $\rm T_C$. The temperature dependent incommensurability is difficult to reconcile with interpretations based on charge stripe formation in ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+x}}$ near optimum doping.

This observation, which indicates a constant ratio E_res /k_B T_c \sim 5.4, helps resolve a long-standing controversy about the origin of the resonant spin excitation in high-temperature superconductors.

Abstract:
The influence of magnetic (S=1) and nonmagnetic (S=0) impurities on the spin dynamics of an optimally doped high temperature superconductor is compared in two samples with almost identical superconducting transition temperatures: YBa$_2$(Cu$_{0.97}$Ni$_{0.03}$)$_3$O$_7$ (T$_c$=80 K) and YBa$_2$(Cu$_{0.99}$Zn$_{0.01}$)$_3$O$_7$ (T$_c$=78 K). In the Ni-substituted system, the magnetic resonance peak (which is observed at E$_r \simeq$40 meV in the pure system) shifts to lower energy with a preserved E$_r$/T$_c$ ratio while the shift is much smaller upon Zn substitution. By contrast Zn, but not Ni, restores significant spin fluctuations around 40 meV in the normal state. These observations are discussed in the light of models proposed for the magnetic resonance peak.

Many physical properties of the copper oxide high temperature superconductors appear to defy the conventional (one-electron) theory of metals, and the development of new theories incorporating strong electron correlations is currently at the forefront of condensed matter physics. Inelastic neutron scattering provides incisive information about collective magnetic excitations that is required to guide this effort. Such measurements have thus far proven possible for only two of the many families of high temperature superconductors, La_{2-x} Sr_x CuO_4 and YBa_2 Cu_3 O_{6+x},because suitably large single crystals of other copper oxide compounds could not be grown. While the magnetic spectra of both materials bear certain similarities, there are also pronounced differences that have hampered a unified description of the spin dynamics in the copper oxides. In particular, a sharp resonant spin excitation dominates the spectrum in the superconducting state of YBa_2 Cu_3 O_{6+x}, but is not found in La_{2-x} Sr_x CuO_4. Here we report the discovery of a magnetic resonance peak in the superconducting state of a different copper oxide system, Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_{8+δ}, made possible by the synthesis of a sizable single crystal and modern neutron optics. This provides evidence of the generality of this unusual phenomenon among the copper oxides and greatly extends the empirical basis for its theoretical description.

Abstract:
Key features of antiferromagnetic dynamical correlations in high-$T_C$ superconductors cuprates are discussed. In underdoped regime, the sharp resonance peak, occuring exclusively in the SC state, is accompanied by a broader contribution located around $\sim$ 30 meV which remains above $T_C$. Their interplay may induce incommensurate structure in the superconducting state.

Whereas in the pure system a sharp resonance peak at E ~ 40 meV is observed exclusively below the superconducting transition temperature T_c, the magnetic response in the Zn-substituted system is broadened significantly and vanishes at a temperature much higher than T_c. The energy-integrated spectral weight observed near q = (pi,pi) increases with Zn substitution, and only about half of the spectral weight is removed at T_c.

The results suggest that the previously proposed model for the magnetism of this compound (an ideal sinusoidal spin spiral, stabilized by isotropic exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions) needs to be refined. Both new and previously published data can be quantitatively explained by taking into account the Kaplan-Shekhtman-Entin-Wohlman-Aharony (KSEA) term, a special magnetic anisotropy term that was predicted to always accompany Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in insulators.

Quasielastic neutron scattering has been utilized to investigate the Griffiths phase induced by an axial magnetic field in FeCl2 at temperatures Tc(H)<=T<=TN, where Tc(H) is the transition temperature in an external magnetic field H. We present the temperature dependence of the integrated neutron scattering intensity at fixed scattering vectors for various magnetic fields. On cooling below TN the antiferromagnetic short-range fluctuations decrease due to an increase of the volume fraction which is already antiferromagnetically ordered. A weighted average of the local contributions to the antiferromagnetic susceptibility quantitatively describes the scattering cross section.

Below about 150 K, the spin arrangement in the chain arrays of Sr14Cu24O41 is shown to develop in two dimensions (2D). Both the correlations and the dispersion of the observed elementary excitations agree well with a model of interacting dimers. Along the chains, the intra- and inter-dimer distances are equal to 2 and about 3 times the distance (c) between neighboring Cu ions. While the intra-dimer coupling is J about 10 meV, the inter-dimer couplings along and between the chains are of comparable strenght, J// about -1.1 meV and Jperp about 1.7 meV, respectively. This remarkable 2D arrangement satisfies the formal Cu valence of the undoped compound. Our data suggest also that it is associated with a relative sliding of one chain with respect to the next one, which, as T decreases, develops in the chain direction. A qualitative analysis shows that nearest inter-dimer spin correlations are ferromagnetic, which, in such a 2D structure, could well result from frustration effects.
