We performed ultrasonic and temperature measurements under pulsed magnetic fields on CeIrIn$_5$ to investigate whether or not the origin of metamagnetic transition and field-induced Lifshitz transition was described by the anisotropic electronic ordering with crystal symmetry breaking. We observed elastic anomalies with the negative magnetocaloric effects around the field-induced Lifshitz transition and the metamagnetic transition. On the other hand, the elastic anomalies appeared both in the transverse elastic constants $(C_{11} - C_{12})/2$ and $C_{66}$ in CeIrIn$_5$ while $(C_{11} - C_{12})/2$ showed significant elastic anomaly at the crystal symmetry breaking fields in CeRhIn$_5$. These results indicate that the anisotropic electronic ordering with crystal symmetry breaking is absent in high-magnetic fields in CeIrIn$_{5}$.

We performed ultrasonic measurements on (Ta$_{0.952}$V$_{0.048}$)$_2$NiSe$_5$ to investigate the contribution of acoustic phonons at the zone center to structural and possible excitonic transitions. The transverse elastic constant $C_{55}$ with irreducible representation $B_\mathrm{2g}$ exhibits softening over 90\% above a transition temperature of $T_\mathrm{s} = 280$ K, indicating the soft mode of corresponding TA phonons. Our analysis based on the quadrupole response indicates that the electron-phonon interaction contributes to the excitonic transition in addition to the hybridization between the conduction and valence bands if the excitonic transition is realized.

We report a $μ$SR investigation of a non-centrosymmetric superconductor (LaNiC$_2$) in single crystal form. Compared to previous $μ$SR studies of non-centrosymmetric superconducting polycrystalline and powder samples, the unambiguous orientation of single crystals enables a simultaneous determination of the absolute value of the magnetic penetration depth and the vortex core size from measurements that probe the magnetic field distribution in the vortex state. The magnetic field dependence of these quantities unambiguously demonstrates the presence of two nodeless superconducting energy gaps. In addition, we detect weak internal magnetic fields in the superconducting phase, confirming earlier $μ$SR evidence for a time-reversal symmetry breaking superconducting state. Our results suggest that Cooper pairing in LaNiC$_2$ is characterized by the same interorbital equal-spin pairing model introduced to describe the pairing state in the centrosymmetric superconductor LaNiGa$_2$.

The magnetic moments are found to be aligned along the crystallographic $c$ axis. This is further confirmed by magnetic susceptibility data, which suggest the $c$ axis to be the easy magnetic axis. The determined magnetic structure is strikingly different from the incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordering of the closely related compound CeRhIn$_5$, in which the magnetic moments are antiferromagnetically aligned within the tetragonal basal plane.

The transverse elastic constant $C_\mathrm{T} = (C_{11} - C_{12})/2$ and the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient $α_\mathrm{T}$ show clear anomaly at $B^\star = 28.5$ T, which was discussed as the electronic nematic transition point. In addition, $C_\mathrm{T}$ exhibits acoustic de Haas-van Alphen oscillation below 28.5 T. These elastic anomalies around $B^\star$ indicate an electric quadrupole ordering of $O_{x^2-y^2}$ accompanied by $B_\mathrm{1g}$ crystal symmetry breaking and Fermi surface reconstruction due to the quadrupole-strain coupling, which results from itinerant $4f$ electrons and the $p$-$f$ hybridized state.

We report measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen effect in the layered heavy-fermion compound CePt$_2$In$_7$ in high magnetic fields up to 35 T. Above an angle-dependent threshold field, we observed several de Haas-van Alphen frequencies originating from almost ideally two-dimensional Fermi surfaces. The frequencies are similar to those previously observed to develop only above a much higher field of 45 T, where a clear anomaly was detected and proposed to originate from a change in the electronic structure [M. M. Altarawneh et al., Phys. Rev. B 83, 081103 (2011)]. Our experimental results are compared with band structure calculations performed for both CePt$_2$In$_7$ and LaPt$_2$In$_7$, and the comparison suggests localized $f$ electrons in CePt$_2$In$_7$. This conclusion is further supported by comparing experimentally observed Fermi surfaces in CePt$_2$In$_7$ and PrPt$_2$In$_7$, which are found to be almost identical. The measured effective masses in CePt$_2$In$_7$ are only moderately enhanced above the bare electron mass $m_0$, from 2$m_0$ to 6$m_0$.

Superconductivity and magnetism are mutually exclusive in most alloys and elements, so it is striking that superconductivity emerges around a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP) in many strongly correlated electron systems (SCES). In the latter case superconductivity is believed to be unconventional and directly influenced by the QCP. However, experimentally unconventional superconductivity has neither been established nor directly been linked to any mechanism of the QCP. Here we report measurements in the heavy-fermion superconductors CeIrSi$_3$ and CeRhSi$_3$. The measurements were performed with a newly developed system, first of its kind, that allows high-resolution studies of the superconducting gap structure under pressure. Superconductivity in CeIrSi$_3$ shows a change from an excitation spectrum with a line-nodal gap to one which is entirely gapful when pressure is close but not yet at the QCP. In contrast, CeRhSi$_3$ does not possess an obvious pressure-tuned QCP and the superconducting phase remains for all accessible pressures with a nodal gap. Combining both results suggests that unconventional behaviours may be connected with the coexisting antiferromagnetic order. This study provides a new viewpoint on the interplay of superconductivity and magnetism in SCES.

We find a temperature- and pressure-dependent decoupling of the critical and pseudo-metamagnetic fields, at the borderlines of antiferromagnetism and strongly-correlated paramagnetism. This 3D phase diagram is representative of a class of heavy-fermion Ising antiferromagnets, where long-range magnetic ordering is decoupled from a maximum in the magnetic susceptibility. The combination of extreme conditions enabled us to characterize different quantum phase transitions, where peculiar quantum critical properties are revealed. The interest to couple the effects of magnetic field and pressure on quantum-critical correlated-electron systems is stressed.

A diffraction experiment using a high energy x-ray was carried out on YbInCu4. Below the Yb valence transition temperature, the splitting of Bragg peaks was detected in higher-order reflections. No superlattice reflections accompanying the valence ordering were found below the transition temperature. These experimental findings indicate that a structural change from a cubic structure to a tetragonal structure without valence ordering occurs at the transition temperature. Such a structural change free from any valence ordering is difficult to understand only in terms of Yb valence degrees of freedom. This means that the structural change may be related to electronic symmetries such as quadrupolar degrees of freedom as well as the change in Yb valence.

We report specific heat measurements on a high quality single crystal of the heavy-fermion compound CePt$_2$In$_7$ in magnetic fields up to 27 T. The zero-field specific heat data above the Néel temperature, $T_N$, suggest a moderately enhanced value of the electronic specific heat coefficient $γ= 180 \; \rm{mJ/K^2mol}$. For $T<T_N$, the data at zero applied magnetic field are consistent with the existence of an anisotropic spin-density wave opening a gap on almost entire Fermi surface, suggesting extreme two-dimensional electronic and magnetic structures for CePt$_2$In$_7$. $T_N$ is monotonically suppressed by magnetic field applied along the $c$-axis. When field is applied parallel to the $a$-axis, $T_N$ first increases at low field up to about 10 T and then decreases monotonically at higher field. Magnetic phase diagram based on specific heat measurements suggests that a field-induced quantum critical point is likely to occur slightly below 60 T for both principal orientations of the magnetic field.

We report on a pressure-induced evolution of exotic superconductivity and spin correlations in CeIr(In$_{1-x}$Cd$_{x}$)$_5$ by means of In-Nuclear-Quadrupole-Resonance (NQR) studies. Measurements of an NQR spectrum and nuclear-spin-lattice-relaxation rate $1/T_1$ have revealed that antiferromagnetism induced by the Cd-doping emerges locally around Cd dopants, but superconductivity is suddenly induced at $T_c$ = 0.7 and 0.9 K at 2.34 and 2.75 GPa, respectively. The unique superconducting characteristics with a large fraction of the residual density of state at the Fermi level that increases with $T_c$ differ from those for anisotropic superconductivity mediated by antiferromagnetic correlations. By incorporating the pressure dependence of the NQR frequency pointing to the valence change of Ce, we suggest that unconventional superconductivity in the CeIr(In$_{1-x}$Cd$_{x}$)$_5$ system may be mediated by valence fluctuations.

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on poly crystalline sample of heavy-fermion compound YbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$ were carried out in order to obtain microscopic insights on the ground state and its magnetic field response. At zero field at 300 mK, inelastic response consists of two features: quasielastic scattering and a sharp peak at 0.6 meV. With increasing temperature, a broad peak comes up around 2.1 meV, whereas quasielastic response gets broader and the peak at 0.6 meV becomes unclear. By applying magnetic field, the quasielastic response exhibits significant broadening above 1 T, and the peak at 0.6 meV is obscure under fields. The peaks in inelastic spectra and its temperature variation can be ascribed to the suggested crystal-field model of ${Γ_6}$ - ${Γ_8}$ - ${Γ_7}$ with the overall splitting of less than 3 meV. The observed quasielastic response and its rapid broadening with magnetic field indicates that the heavy-electron state arises from the ground state doublets, and are strongly suppressed by external field in YbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$.

The 29Si-Knight shift measurements under pressure have revealed that the spin susceptibility for the ab-plane decreases slightly below Tc, whereas along the c-axis it does not change at all. The result can be accounted for by the spin susceptibility in the superconducting state being dominated by the strong antisymmetric (Rashba-type) spin-orbit interaction that originates from the absence of an inversion center along the c-axis and it being much larger than superconducting condensation energy. This is the first observation which exhibits an anisotropy of the spin susceptibility below Tc in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor dominated by strong Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction.

In a field of 1 T, a sign reversal of the fourfold angular oscillation in C_φhas been observed at T ~ 0.1Tc on entering a quasiclassical regime where the maximum of C_φcorresponds to the antinodal direction, coinciding with the angle-resolved density of states (ADOS) calculation. The C_φbehavior, which exhibits minima along [110] directions, unambiguously allows us to conclude d_{x^2-y^2} symmetry of this system. The ADOS-quasiclassical region is confined to a narrow T and H domain within T/Tc ~ 0.1 and 1.5 T (0.13Hc2).

We find that the volume of electron and hole Fermi surfaces shrink linearly with decreasing x. This shrinking is accompanied by a strong increase in the quasiparticle effective mass as x is tuned toward the maximum T_c. It is likely that these trends originate from the many-body interaction which give rise to superconductivity, rather than the underlying one-electron bandstructure.

Abstract:
We present a novel phase diagram for the antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in Ce$_2$RhIn$_8$ probed by In-NQR studies under pressure ($P$). We present a novel phase diagram for the antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in Ce$_2$RhIn$_8$ probed by In-NQR studies under pressure ($P$). The quasi-2D character of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the paramagnetic state at $P$ = 0 evolves into a 3D character because of the suppression of antiferromagnetic order for $P > P_{\rm QCP}\sim$ 1.36 GPa (QCP: antiferromagnetic quantum critical point). Nuclear-spin-lattice-relaxation rate $1/T_1$ measurements revealed that the superconducting order occurs in the $P$ range 1.36 -- 1.84 GPa, with maximum $T_c\sim$ 0.9 K around $P_{\rm QCP}\sim$ 1.36 GPa.

We report on a novel pressure ($P$)-induced evolution of magnetism and superconductivity (SC) in a helical magnet CeRhIn$_5$ with an incommensurate wave vector $Q_i=({1/2},{1/2},0.297)$ through the $^{115}$In nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements under $P$. Systematic measurements of the $^{115}$In-NQR spectrum reveal that the commensurate antiferromagnetism (AFM) with $Q_c=({1/2},{1/2},{1/2})$ is realized above $P_m \sim$ 1.7 GPa. An important finding is that the size of SC gap and $T_c$ increase as the magnitude of the AFM moment decreases in the $P$ region, where SC uniformly coexists with the commensurate AFM. This result provides evidence of strong coupling between the commensurate AFM order parameter (OP) and SC OP.

We report on measurements of the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth of a very high quality single crystal of nonmagnetic superconductor LaPt3Si without inversion symmetry. The results are compared with those previously reported for the isostructural antiferromagnetic superconductor CePt3Si. At low temperatures, the penetration depth follows a BCS exponential behavior that implies an isotropic energy gap in LaPt3Si, in contrast to a linear response that indicates line nodes in CePt3Si. These line nodes have been argued to be protected by symmetry or accidentally generated by parity mixing. The present results provide support for the viewpoint that parity mixing alone does not seem to lead to unconventionality in CePt3Si and that it requires the antiferromagnetic order to be included.

The evolution of the peak occurs well above the antiferromagnetic transition temperature $T_{\rm N}\sim$ 2.2 K, so that the direct relationship with the magnetic transition is questionable. The half-width of the peak seems to reflect the crystal field splitting or the spin-wave gap as observed for the above-mentioned HFSs, possibly suggesting that some common scattering process induces the zero-bias peaks in these materials.

We report on novel superconducting characteristics of the heavy fermion (HF) superconductor CePt3Si without inversion symmetry through 195Pt-NMR study on a single crystal with T_c= 0.46 K that is lower than T_c= 0.75 K for polycrystals. We show that the intrinsic superconducting characteristics inherent to CePt3Si can be understood in terms of the unconventional strong-coupling state with a line-node gap below T_c= 0.46 K. The mystery about the sample dependence of T_c is explained by the fact that more or less polycrystals and single crystals inevitably contain some disordered domains, which exhibit a conventional BCS s-wave superconductivity (SC) below 0.8 K. In contrast, the Neel temperature T_N= 2.2 K is present regardless of the quality of samples, revealing that the Fermi surface responsible for SC differ from that for the antiferromagnetic order. These unusual characteristics of CePt3Si can be also described by a multiband model; in the homogeneous domains, the coherent HF bands are responsible for the unconventional SC, whereas in the disordered domains the conduction bands existing commonly in LaPt3Si may be responsible for the conventional s-wave SC. We remark that some impurity scatterings in the disordered domains break up the 4f-electrons-derived coherent bands but not others. In this context, the small peak in 1/T_1 just below T_c reported in the previous paper (Yogi et al, 2004) is not due to a two-component order parameter composed of spin-singlet and spin-triplet Cooper pairing states, but due to the contamination of the disorder domains which are in the s-wave SC state.

We report a $^{73}$Ge nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) study on novel evolution of unconventional superconductivity in antiferromagnetic (AFM) CeNiGe$_3$. The measurements of the $^{73}$Ge-NQR spectrum and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) have revealed that the unconventional superconductivity evolves inside a commensurate AFM phase around the pressure ($P$) where Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ exhibits its maximum at 8.5 K. The superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm SC}$ has been found to be enhanced with increasing $T_{\rm N}$, before reaching the quantum critical point at which the AFM order collapses. Above $T_{\rm SC}$, the AFM structure transits from an incommensurate spin-density-wave order to a commensurate AFM order at $T\sim 2$ K, accompanied by a longitudinal spin-density fluctuation. With regard to heavy-fermion compounds, these novel phenomena have hitherto never been reported in the $P$-$T$ phase diagram.

In quasi-two dimensional Ce(Ir,Rh)In$_5$ system, it has been suggested that the phase diagram contains two distinct domes with different heavy fermion superconducting states. We here report the systematic pressure dependence of the electron transport properties in the normal state of CeRh$_{0.2}$Ir$_{0.8}$In$_{5}$ and CeIrIn$_{5}$, which locates in first and second superconducting dome, respectively. We observed non-Fermi liquid behavior at low temperatures in both compounds, including non-quadratic $T-$dependence of the resistivity, large enhancement of the Hall coefficient, and the violation of the Kohler's rule in the magnetoresistance. We show that the cotangent of Hall angle $\cot Θ_H$ varies as $T^2$, and the magnetoresistance is quite well scaled by the Hall angle as $Δρ_{xx}/ρ_{xx}\propto \tan^2Θ_H$. The observed transport anomalies are common features of Ce$M$In$_{5}$ ($M$=Co, Rh, and Ir) and high-$T_c$ cuprates, suggesting that the anomalous transport properties observed in CeIrIn$_{5}$ are mainly governed by the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, not by the Ce-valence fluctuations which has been proposed to be the possible origin for the second superconducting dome.

We report on the pressure-induced unconventional superconductivity in the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeIn3 by means of nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) studies conducted under a high pressure. The temperature and pressure dependences of the NQR spectra have revealed a first-order quantum-phase transition (QPT) from an AFM to PM at a critical pressure Pc=2.46 GPa. Despite the lack of an AFM quantum critical point in the P-T phase diagram, we highlight the fact that the unconventional SC occurs in both phases of the AFM and PM. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 in the AFM phase have provided evidence for the uniformly coexisting AFM+SC phase. In the HF-PM phase where AFM fluctuations are not developed, 1/T1 decreases without the coherence peak just below Tc, followed by a power-law like T dependence that indicates an unconventional SC with a line-node gap. Remarkably, Tc has a peak around Pc in the HF-PM phase as well as in the AFM phase. In other words, an SC dome exists with a maximum value of Tc = 230 mK around Pc, indicating that the origin of the pressure-induced HF SC in CeIn3 is not relevant to AFM spin fluctuations but to the emergence of the first-order QPT in CeIn3. When the AFM critical temperature is suppressed at the termination point of the first-order QPT, Pc = 2.46 GPa, the diverging AFM spin-density fluctuations emerge at the critical point from the AFM to PM. The results with CeIn3 leading to a new type of quantum criticality deserve further theoretical investigations.

In the normal state, 1/T_1 follows a \sqrt{T}-like behavior, suggesting that the SC emerges under the non-Fermi liquid state dominated by AFM spin fluctuations enhanced around quantum critical point (QCP). The reason why the maximum Tc in CeIrSi3 is relatively high among the Ce-based heavy-fermion superconductors may be the existence of the strong AFM spin fluctuations. We discuss the comparison with the other Ce-based heavy-fermion superconductors.

In CePt$_3$Si, the Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ = 2.2 K decreases with increasing pressure and becomes zero at the critical pressure $P_{\rm AF}$ $\simeq$ 0.6 GPa. On the other hand, the superconducting phase exists in a wider pressure region from ambient pressure to $P_{\rm AF}$ $\simeq$ 1.5 GPa. The phase diagram of CePt$_3$Si is very unique and has never been reported before for other heavy fermion superconductors. In UIr, the heat capacity shows an anomaly at the Curie temperature $T_{\rm C1}$ = 46 K at ambient pressure, and the heat capacity anomaly shifts to lower temperatures with increasing pressure. The present pressure dependence of $T_{\rm C1}$ was consistent with the previous studies by the resistivity and magnetization measurements. Previous ac magnetic susceptibility and resistivity measurements suggested the existence of three ferromagnetic phases, FM1-3. $C_{\rm ac}$ shows a bending structure at 1.98, 2.21, and 2.40 GPa .The temperatures where these anomalies are observed are close to the phase boundary of the FM3 phase.

The heat capacity $C_{\rm ac}$ shows both antiferromagnetic and superconducting transitions at pressures close to $P_{\rm c}$. The superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm sc}$ shows a maximum value of 1.6 K around $2.5-2.7$ GPa. At 2.58 GPa, a large heat capacity anomaly was observed at $T_{\rm sc}$ = 1.59 K. The jump of the heat capacity in the form of $Δ{C_{\rm ac}}/C_{\rm ac}(T_{\rm sc})$ is 5.7 $\pm$ 0.1. This is the largest value observed among all superconductors studied previously, suggesting the strong-coupling superconductivity in CeIrSi$_3$. The large magnitude and anisotropy of the upper critical field $B_{\rm c2}$ at 2.65 GPa is discussed from view points of the strong-coupling superconductivity and the reduced paramagnetic effect in the non-centrosymmetric superconductor. Above $P_{\rm c}$, the electrical resistivity shows the anomalous $T$-linear dependence in the wide temperature region from $T_{\rm sc}$ to 30 K, which is different from the Fermi liquid theory. Meanwhile, the heat capacity $C_{\rm ac}/T$ shows a simple temperature dependence in the normal state above $T_{\rm sc}$. These features do not seem to be explained simply by the spin fluctuation theory. The electronic specific heat coefficient at $T_{\rm sc}$ is approximately unchanged as a function of pressure, even at $P_{\rm c}$.

We present a systematic study of the dc-resistivity, Hall effect, and magnetoresistance in the normal state of quasi 2D heavy fermion superconductors CeMIn5 (M: Rh and Co) under pressure. Here the electronic system evolves with pressure from an antiferromagnetic (AF) metal, through a highly unconventional non-Fermi liquid, and finally into a Fermi-liquid state. The amplitude of the Hall coefficient increases dramatically with decreasing T, reaching at low temperatures a value significantly larger than 1/ne. Furthermore, the magnetoresistance is characterized by T- and H-dependence which clearly violate Kohler's rule. We found that the Hall angle cotΘvaries as T^2, and the magnetoresistance is well scaled by the Hall angle as Δρ_{xx}/ρ_{xx}\propto \tan^2Θ. These non-Fermi liquid properties in the electron transport are remarkably pronounced when the AF fluctuations are enhanced in the vicinity of the QCP. We lay particular emphasis on the striking resemblance of these anomalous magnetotransport with those of the high-Tc cuprates. We argue that features commonly observed in quasi 2D heavy fermion and cuprates very likely capture universal features of strongly correlated electron systems.

We found that the restoration of the Fermi liquid state with applied pressure leads to a gradual suppression of this dramatic enhancement. Moreover, the enhancement in $R_H$ was found to be confined to an intermediate temperature window, where inelastic electron-electron scattering is dominant. Our results strongly support the presence of cold and hot spots on the Fermi surface probably due to anisotropic scattering by antiferromagnetic fluctuations, which may also prove relevant for the debate on the anomalous normal-state properties of high-$T_c$ cuprates.

We report on a study of thermal Hall conductivity k_xy in the superconducting state of CeCoIn_5. The scaling relation and the density of states of the delocalized quasiparticles, both obtained from k_xy, are consistent with d-wave superconducting symmetry. The onset of superconductivity is accompanied by a steep increase in the thermal Hall angle, pointing to a striking enhancement in the quasiparticle mean free path. This enhancement is drastically suppressed in a very weak magnetic field. These results highlight that CeCoIn_5 is unique among superconductors. A small Fermi energy, a large superconducting gap, a short coherence length, and a long mean free path all indicate that CeCoIn_5 is clearly in the superclean regime (E_F/Delta<<l/xi), in which peculiar vortex state is expected.

The pressure dependences of the antiferromagnetic and superconducting transition temperatures have been investigated by ac heat capacity measurement under high pressures for the heavy-fermion superconductor CePt$_3$Si without inversion symmetry in the tetragonal structure. The Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ = 2.2 K decreases with increasing pressure and becomes zero at the critical pressure $P_{\rm AF}$ $\simeq$ 0.6 GPa. On the other hand, the superconducting phase exists in a wider pressure region from ambient pressure to about 1.5 GPa. The pressure phase diagram of CePt$_3$Si is thus very unique and has never been reported before for other heavy fermion superconductors.

We report the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect and magnetoresistance in the filled-skutterudite superconductor LaRu4P12, which is a reference material of PrRu4P12 that exhibits a metal-insulator (M-I) transition at T_MI~60 K. The observed dHvA branches for the main Fermi surface (FS) are well explained by the band-structure calculation, using the full potential linearized augmented-plane-wave method with the local-density approximation, suggesting a nesting instability with q =(1,0,0) in the main multiply connected FS as expected also in PrRu4P12. Observed cyclotron effective masses of (2.6-11.8)m_0, which are roughly twice the calculated masses, indicate the large mass enhancement even in the La-skutterudites. Comparing the FS between LaRu4P12 and PrRu4P12, an essential role of c-f hybridization cooperating with the FS nesting in driving the the M-I transition in PrRu4P12 has been clarified.

The superconducting gap structure of recently discovered heavy fermion CePt_3Si without spatial inversion symmetry was investigated by thermal transport measurements down to 40 mK. In zero field a residual T-linear term was clearly resolved as T-> 0, with a magnitude in good agreement with the value expected for a residual normal fluid with a nodal gap structure, together with a T^2-dependence at high temperatures. With an applied magnetic fields, the thermal conductivity grows rapidly, in dramatic contrast to fully gapped superconductors, and exhibits one-parameter scaling with T/sqrt{H}. These results place an important constraint on the order parameter symmetry, that is CePt_3Si is most likely to have line nodes.

The measured anisotropy in the susceptibility shows that in the pressure-induced magnetic state the ordered 4f-moments lie in the ac-plane. We propose that remarkable pressure effects on the susceptibility and resistivity are due to changes in the quadrupolar state of O22 and/or O20 under pressure. We present a simple analysis in terms of the singlet-singlet model.

We report on novel antiferromagnetic (AFM) and superconducting (SC) properties of noncentrosymmetric CePt3Si through measurements of the 195Pt nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1. In the normal state, the temperature (T) dependence of 1/T1 unraveled the existence of low-lying levels in crystal-electric-field multiplets and the formation of a heavy fermion (HF) state. The coexistence of AFM and SC phases, that emerge at TN = 2.2 K and Tc = 0.75 K, respectively, takes place on a microscopic level. CePt3Si is the first HF superconductor that reveals a peak in 1/T1 just below Tc and, additionally, does not follow the T^3 law that used to be reported for most unconventional HF superconductors. We remark that this unexpected SC characteristics may be related with the lack of an inversion center in its crystal structure.

The heat-capacity and magnetization measurements under high pressure have been carried out in a ferromagnetic superconductor UGe$_2$. Both measurements were done using a same pressure cell in order to obtain both data for one pressure. Contrary to the heat capacity at ambient pressure, an anomaly is found in the heat capacity at the characteristic temperature $T^{*}$ where the magnetization shows an anomalous enhancement under high pressure where the superconductivity appears. This suggests that a thermodynamic phase transition takes place at $T^{*}$ at least under high pressure slightly below $P_{c}^{*}$ where $T^{*}$ becomes zero. The heat-capacity anomaly associated with the superconducting transition is also investigated, where a clear peak of $C/T$ is observed in a narrow pressure region ($ΔP \sim 0.1$ GPa) around $P_{c}^{*}$ contrary to the previous results of the resistivity measurement. Present results suggest the importance of the thermodynamic critical point $P_{c}^{*}$ for the appearance of the superconductivity.

We have found a $P$-induced phase separation of AFM and paramagnetism (PM) without any trace for a quantum phase transition in CeIn$_3$. A new type of superconductivity (SC) was found in $P=2.28-2.5$ GPa to coexist with AFM that is magnetically separated from PM where the heavy fermion SC takes place. We propose that the magnetic excitations such as spin-density fluctuations induced by the first-order magnetic phase transition might mediate attractive interaction to form Cooper pairs.

Ultrasound velocity measurements of the unconventional superconductor CeCoIn_5 with extremely large Pauli paramagnetic susceptibility reveal an unusual structural transformation of the flux line lattice (FLL) in the vicinity of the upper critical field. The transition field coincides with that at which heat capacity measurements reveal a second order phase transition. The lowering of the sound velocity at the transition is consistent with the collapse of the FLL tilt modulus and a crossover to quasi two-dimensional FLL pinning. These results provide a strong evidence that the high field state is the Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinikov phase, in which the order parameter is spatially modulated and has planar nodes aligned perpendicular to the vortices.

The results point to a hitherto unknown source of transverse thermoelectricity in strongly interacting electrons.

We report In-NQR and Co-NMR experiments of CeCoIn$_5$ that undergoes a superconducting transition with a record high $T_{\rm c}$ = 2.3 K to date among heavy-fermion superconductors. At zero magnetic field, an anomalous temperature ($T$) dependence of nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ of $^{115}$In is explained by the relation $1/T_1\propto T\cdotχ_Q(T)^{3/4}$ based on the anisotropic spin-fluctuations model in case of the proximity to an antiferromagnetic (AFM) quantum critical point (QCP). The novel behavior of $1/T_1\sim T^{1/4}$ over a wide $T$ range of $T_{\rm c} < T < 40$ K arises because the staggered susceptibility almost follows the Curie law $χ_Q(T)\propto 1/(T+θ)$ with $θ= 0.6$ K and hence $1/T_1\propto T/(T+0.6)^{3/4}\sim T^{1/4}$ for $θ< T$. We highlight that the behavior $1/T_1\sim T^{1/4}$ is due to the proximity to the anisotropic AFM QCP relevant with its layered structure, and is not associated with the AFM QCP for isotropic 3D systems. We have also found that the AFM spin fluctuations in CeCoIn$_5$ are suppressed by small magnetic field so that $θ=0.6$ K at $H$=0 increases to $θ= 2.5$ K at $H$ = 1.1 T, reinforcing that CeCoIn$_5$ is closely located at the QCP.

We demonstrate a novel relation between the MR and the Hall conductivity, Delta rho_xx/rho_xx propto (sigma_xy rho_xx)^2. These results bear a striking resemblance to the normal-state properties of high-T_c cuprates, indicating universal transport properties in the presence of quasi-2D antiferromagnetic fluctuations near a quantum critical point.
