Microcavity polaritons are strongly interacting hybrid light-matter quasiparticles, which are promising for the development of novel light sources and active photonic devices. Here, we report polariton lasing in the UV spectral range in microring resonators based on GaN/AlGaN slab waveguides, with experiments carried out from 4 K up to room temperature. Stimulated polariton relaxation into multiple ring resonator modes is observed, which exhibit threshold-like dependence of the emission intensity with pulse energy. The strong exciton-photon coupling regime is confirmed by the significant reduction of the free spectral range with energy and the blueshift of the exciton-like modes with increasing pulse energy. Importantly, the exciton emission shows no broadening with power, further confirming that lasing is observed at electron-hole densities well below the Mott transition. Overall, our work paves the way towards development of novel UV devices based on the high-speed slab waveguide polariton geometry operating up to room temperature with potential to be integrated into complex photonic circuits.

We consider a high-Q microresonator with $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinearity under conditions when the coupling rates between the sidebands around the pump and second harmonic exceed the damping rates, implying the strong coupling regime (SC). Using the dressed-resonator approach we demonstrate that this regime leads to the dominance of the Hermitian part of the operator driving the side-band dynamics over its non-Hermitian part responsible for the parametric gain. This has allowed us to introduce and apply the cross-area concept of the polariton quasi-particles and define their effective masses in the context of $χ^{(2)}$ ring-microresonators. We further use polaritons to predict the modified spectral response of the resonator to a weak probe field, and to reveal splitting of the bare-resonator resonances, avoided crossings, and Rabi dynamics. Polariton basis also allows deriving a discrete sequence of the parametric thresholds for the generation of sidebands of different orders.

Photonic topological insulators supporting unidirectional topologically protected edge states represent attractive platform for realization of disorder- and backscattering-immune transport of edge excitations in both linear and nonlinear regimes. In many realizations of topological insulators structured periodic materials are used, since they may admit specific Dirac degeneracy in the spectrum, around which unidirectional edge states appear under the action of physical effects breaking time-reversal symmetry. While properties of the edge states at unclosed interfaces of two bulk media with different topology are known, the existence of the edge states in practical finite-dimensional topological insulators fully immersed in nontopological environment remains largely unexplored. In this work using as an example realistic polariton topological insulators built from small-size honeycomb arrays of microcavity pillars, we illustrate how topological properties of the system build up upon gradual increase of its dimensionality. To account for dissipative nature of polariton condensate forming in the array of microcavity pillars, we consider the impact of losses and resonant pump leading to rich bistability effects in this system. We describe the mechanism in accordance with which trivial-phase pump "selects" and excites specific nonlinear topological edge states circulating along the periphery of the structure in the azimuthal direction dictated by the direction of the external applied magnetic field. We also show the possibility of utilization of vortex pump with different topological charges for selective excitation of different edge currents.

Under the action of a weak constant force a wavepacket in periodic potential undergoes periodic oscillations in space, returning to the initial position after one oscillation cycle. This wave phenomenon, known as Bloch oscillations (BOs), pertains to many physical systems. Can BOs also occur in topological insulators with topologically protected edge states? This question is highly nontrivial, because in topological insulators with broken time-reversal symmetry, the edge states propagate unidirectionally without backscattering, hence BOs that typically involve stages, where wavepacket moves along and against the direction of the force, seem to be impossible in such systems when force acts parallel to the edge of the insulator. Here we reveal that BOs still occur with topological edge states, but in a nonconventional way: they are accompanied not only by oscillations along the edge in the direction of force, but also by oscillations in the direction transverse to that of the force. Full BO cycle involves switching between edge states at the opposite edges through delocalized bulk modes. Bloch oscillations of the topological edge states require to scan the first Brillouin zone twice to complete one cycle, thus they have a period that is two times larger than the period of usual BOs. All these unusual properties are in contrast to BOs in non-topological systems.

We address evolution of a spinor polariton condensate in radially periodic potentials. Such potentials allow for the observation of novel nonlinear excitations and support a variety of dynamically stable soliton states never demonstrated before in polariton condensates, including ring-like solitons with density peaks located in different radial minima of the potential and extended dynamically stable multiring patterns. Among the advantages of the system is that azimuthal modulational instabilities are suppressed due to dominating repulsive interactions between polaritons with the same spin, thereby allowing for the stabilization of radially-symmetric states. The representative feature of this system is that spin-orbit coupling between different spinor components requires them to carry different topological charges. Radially-symmetric states carrying different combinations of topological charges are discussed. Radially symmetric potentials also support stable rotating multipeaked solitons, whose properties unexpectedly depend not only on the magnitude of the rotation velocity, but also on its sign, i.e., on the rotation direction. The latter property is a consequence of spin-orbit coupling which breaks the equivalence between clockwise and counterclockwise rotations. The multiring structures are shown to be robust against unavoidable losses and are therefore amenable to observations with the presently available experimental techniques.

We address the inhibition of tunnelling in polariton condensates confined in a potential landscape created by a honeycomb array of microcavity pillars in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting in the external magnetic field. The coupling rate between the microcavity pillars can be strongly impacted even by weak out-of-phase temporal modulations of the depths of the corresponding potential wells. When such a modulation is implemented in truncated honeycomb arrays that realize a polariton topological insulator, which supports unidirectional edge states in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting, it allows controlling the velocity of the states. The origin of the phenomenon is the dynamical modulation with a proper frequency, which notably changes the dispersion of the system and the group velocity of edge states. We show that such a control is possible for modulation frequencies close to resonances for inhibition of tunnelling in a two-well configuration. Edge states considerably slow down, and even stop completely, when the modulation frequency approaches a resonant value, while above such frequency splitting of the edge states into wavepackets moving with different velocities occurs.

Topological insulators are unique devices supporting unidirectional edge states at their interfaces. Due to topological protection, such edge states persist in the presence of disorder and do not experience backscattering upon interaction with defects. We show that despite the topological protection and the fact that such states at the opposite edges of a ribbon carry opposite currents, there exists a physical mechanism allowing to resonantly couple topological excitations propagating at opposite edges. Such mechanism uses weak periodic temporal modulations of the system parameters and does not affect the internal symmetry and topology of the system. We study this mechanism in truncated honeycomb arrays of microcavity pillars, where topological insulation is possible for polaritons under the combined action of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting in the external magnetic field. The temporal modulation of the potential leads to a periodic switching between topological states with the same Bloch momentum, but located at the opposite edges. The switching rate is found to increase for narrower ribbon structures and for larger modulation depth, though it is changing nonmonotonically with the Bloch momentum of the input edge state. Our results provide a promising realization of a coupling device based on topologically protected states. The proposed scheme can be used in other topological photonic and condensed matter systems, including Floquet insulators and graphene.

We consider a system of generalized coupled Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equations, derived as a tight-binding model from the Gross-Pitaevskii-type equations describing a zigzag chain of weakly coupled condensates of exciton-polaritons with spin-orbit (TE-TM) coupling. We focus on the simplest case when the angles for the links in the zigzag chain are $\pm π/4$ with respect to the chain axis, and the basis (Wannier) functions are cylindrically symmetric (zero orbital angular momenta). We analyze the properties of the fundamental nonlinear localized solutions, with particular interest in the discrete gap solitons appearing due to the simultaneous presence of spin-orbit coupling and zigzag geometry, opening a gap in the linear dispersion relation. In particular, their linear stability is analyzed. We also find that the linear dispersion relation becomes exactly flat at particular parameter values, and obtain corresponding compact solutions localized on two neighboring sites, with spin-up and spin-down parts $π/2$ out of phase at each site. The continuation of these compact modes into exponentially decaying gap modes for generic parameter values is studied numerically, and regions of stability are found to exist in the lower or upper half of the gap, depending on the type of gap modes.

They are strongly localized across the interface and they are remarkably robust in comparison to their counterparts in hexagonal lattices. Such robustness makes possible the existence of nested unidirectional dark solitons that move steadily along the lattice edge.

Using the microcavity exciton-polaritons in a honeycomb arrangement of microcavity pillars, we report the resonance response and bistability of the topological edge states. A balance between the pump, loss and nonlinearity ensures a broad range of dynamical stability and controls the distribution of power between counter-propagating states on the opposite edges of the honeycomb lattice stripe. Tuning energy and polarization of the pump photons, while keeping their momentum constant, we demonstrate control of the propagation direction of the dominant edge state. Our results facilitate development of new applications of topological photonics in practical devices.

We explore nonlinear transitions of polariton wavepackets, first, to a soliton and then to a standing wave polariton condensate in a multi-mode microwire system. At low polariton density we observe ballistic propagation of the multi-mode polariton wavepackets arising from the interference between different transverse modes. With increasing polariton density, the wavepackets transform into single mode bright solitons due to effects of both inter-modal and intra-modal polariton-polariton scattering. Further increase of the excitation density increases thermalisation speed leading to relaxation of the polariton density distribution in momentum space with the resultant formation of a non-equilibrium condensate manifested by a standing wave pattern across the whole sample.

By means of combined analytical and numerical methods, we identify stable two-dimensional modes supported by the nonlinear system. In the absence of the Zeeman splitting, these are mixed modes, which combine zero and nonzero vorticities in each of the two spinor components, and vortex-antivortex complexes. We have also found a range of parameters where the mixed-mode and vortex-antivortex states coexist and are simultaneously stable. Sufficiently strong Zeeman splitting creates stable semi-vortex states, with vorticities 0 in one component and 2 in the other.

Matter in nontrivial topological phase possesses unique properties, such as support of unidirectional edge modes on its interface. It is the existence of such modes which is responsible for the wonderful properties of a topological insulator -- material which is insulating in the bulk but conducting on its surface, along with many of its recently proposed photonic and polaritonic analogues. We show that exciton-polariton fluid in a nontrivial topological phase in kagome lattice, supports nonlinear excitations in the form of solitons built up from wavepackets of topological edge modes -- topological edge solitons. Our theoretical and numerical results indicate the appearance of bright, dark and grey solitons dwelling in the vicinity of the boundary of a lattice strip. In a parabolic region of the dispersion the solitons can be described by envelope functions satisfying the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Upon collision, multiple topological edge solitons emerge undistorted, which proves them to be true solitons as opposed to solitary waves for which such requirement is waived. Importantly, kagome lattice supports topological edge mode with zero group velocity unlike other types of truncated lattices. This gives a finer control over soliton velocity which can take both positive and negative values depending on the choice of forming it topological edge modes.

We study two-dimensional fundamental and vortex solitons in polariton condensates with spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting evolving in square arrays of microcavity pillars. Due to repulsive excitonic nonlinearity such states are encountered in finite gaps in the spectrum of the periodic array. Spin-orbit coupling between two polarization components stemming from TE-TM energy splitting of the cavity photons acting together with Zeeman splitting lifts the degeneracy between vortex solitons with opposite topological charges and makes their density profiles different for a fixed energy. This results in formation of four distinct families of vortex solitons with topological charges m=+-1, all of which can be stable. At the same time, only two stable families of fundamental gap solitons characterized by domination of different polarization components are encountered.

Optical microcavities supporting exciton-polariton quasi-particles offer one of the most powerful platforms for investigation of rapidly developing area of topological photonics in general, and of photonic topological insulators in particular. Energy bands of the microcavity polariton graphene are readily controlled by magnetic field and influenced by the spin-orbit coupling effects, a combination leading to formation of linear unidirectional edge states in polariton topological insulators as predicted very recently. In this work we depart from the linear limit of non-interacting polaritons and predict instabilities of the nonlinear topological edge states resulting in formation of the localized topological quasi-solitons, which are exceptionally robust and immune to backscattering wavepackets propagating along the graphene lattice edge. Our results provide a background for experimental studies of nonlinear polariton topological insulators and can influence other subareas of photonics and condensed matter physics, where nonlinearities and spin-orbit effects are often important and utilized for applications.

We generalize the spin Meissner effect for exciton-polariton condensate confined in annular geometries to the case of non-trivial topology of the condensate wavefunction. In contrast to the conventional spin Meissner state, topological spin Meissner states can in principle be observed at arbitrary high magnetic field not limited by the critical magnetic field value for the condensate in a simply-connected geometry. One special example of the topological Meissner states are half-vortices. We show that in the absence of magnetic field half-vortices in a ring exist in a form of superposition of elementary half-vortex states which resolves recent experimental results where such puzzling superposition was observed. Furthermore, we show that if a pure half-vortex state is to be observed, a non-zero magnetic field of a specific magnitude needs to be applied. Studying exciton-polariton in a ring in presence of TE-TM splitting, we observe spin Meissner states which break rotational symmetry of the system by developing inhomogeneous density distributions. We classify various states arising in presence of non-zero TE-TM splitting based on what states they can be continued from by increasing the TE-TM splitting parameter from zero. With further increasing TE-TM splitting, states with broken symmetry may transform into stable half-dark solitons and therefore may serve as a useful tool to generate various non-trivial states of a spinor condensate.

Here we introduce a new platform based on strong light-matter coupling between waveguide photons and quantum-well excitons. On a sub-millimeter length scale we generate sub-picosecond bright temporal solitons at a pulse energy of only 0.5 pico-Joules. From this we deduce an unprecedented nonlinear refractive index 3 orders of magnitude larger than in any other ultrafast system. We study both temporal and spatio-temporal nonlinear effects and for the first time observe dark-bright spatio-temporal solitons. Theoretical modelling of soliton formation in the strongly coupled system confirms the experimental observations. Semiconductor microcavities operating in the polaritonic regime are highly non-linear, high speed systems due to the unique half-light, half-matter nature of polaritons. Here, we report for the first time the observation of propagating multi-soliton polariton patterns consisting of multi-peak structures either along (x) or perpendicular to (y) the direction of propagation. Soliton arrays of up to 5 solitons are observed, with the number of solitons controlled by the size or power of the triggering laser pulse. The break-up along the x direction occurs due to interplay of bistability, negative effective mass and polariton-polariton scattering, while in the y direction the break-up results from nonlinear phase-dependent interactions of propagating fronts. We show the experimental results are in good agreement with numerical modelling. Our observations are a step towards ultrafast all-optical signal processing using sequences of solitons as bits of information.

We demonstrate that soliton-plasmon bound states appear naturally as propagating eigenmodes of nonlinear Maxwell's equations for a metal/dielectric/Kerr interface. By means of a variational method, we give an explicit and simplified expression for the full-vector nonlinear operator of the system. Soliplasmon states (propagating surface soliton-plasmon modes) can be then analytically calculated as eigenmodes of this non-selfadjoint operator. The theoretical treatment of the system predicts the key features of the stationary solutions and gives physical insight to understand the inherent stability and dynamics observed by means of finite element numerical modeling of the time independent nonlinear Maxwell equations. Our results contribute with a new theory for the development of power-tunable photonic nanocircuits based on nonlinear plasmonic waveguides.

Microcavity polaritons are composite half-light half-matter quasi-particles, which have recently been demonstrated to exhibit rich physical properties, such as non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation, parametric scattering and superfluidity. At the same time, polaritons have some important advantages over photons for information processing applications, since their excitonic component leads to weaker diffraction and stronger inter-particle interactions, implying, respectively, tighter localization and lower powers for nonlinear functionality. Here we present the first experimental observations of bright polariton solitons in a strongly coupled semiconductor microcavity. The polariton solitons are shown to be non-diffracting high density wavepackets, that are strongly localised in real space with a corresponding broad spectrum in momentum space. Unlike solitons known in other matter-wave systems such as Bose condensed ultracold atomic gases, they are non-equilibrium and rely on a balance between losses and external pumping. Microcavity polariton solitons are excited on picosecond timescales, and thus have significant benefits for ultrafast switching and transfer of information over their light only counterparts, semiconductor cavity lasers (VCSELs), which have only nanosecond response time.

Using a multiple-scale asymptotic approach, we have derived the complex cubic Ginzburg-Landau equation for amplified and nonlinearly saturated surface plasmon polaritons propagating and diffracting along a metal-dielectric interface. An important feature of our method is that it explicitly accounts for nonlinear terms in the boundary conditions, which are critical for a correct description of nonlinear surface waves. Using our model we have analyzed filamentation and discussed bright and dark spatially localized structures of plasmons.

The lower branch of the dispersion relation of exciton polaritons in semiconductor microcavities, operating in the strong-coupling regime, contains sections of both positive and negative curvature along one spatial direction. We show that this leads to the existence of stable one-dimensional bright microcavity solitons supported by the repulsive polariton nonlinearity. To achieve localization along the second transverse direction we propose to create a special soliton waveguide by changing the cavity detuning and hence the boundary of the soliton existence in such a way that the solitons are allowed only within the stripe of the desired width.

Quantum lattice solitons in a system of two ultracold bosons near Feshbach resonance are investigated. It is shown that their binding energy, effective mass, and spatial width, can be manipulated varying the detuning from the Feshbach resonance. In the case of attractive atomic interactions, the molecule creation stabilizes the solitons. In the case of repulsive interactions, the molecule creation leads to the possibility of existence of bright solitons in some interval of detunings. Due to quantum fluctuations the soliton width is a random quantity. Its standard deviation is larger than the mean value for such a small number of particles.

Abstract:
We demonstrate that matter-wave solitary pulses formed from Bose condensed atoms moving inside optical lattices continuously radiate dispersive matter waves with prescribed momentum. Our analytical results for the radiation parameters and the soliton decay rate are found to be in excellent agreement with numerical modelling performed for experimentally relevant parameters.

Correspondence between frequency and energy spectra and biorthogonality conditions for the excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates described by Gross-Pitaevskii model have been derived selfconsistently revealing several novel aspects originating in nonselfadjoitness of the Bogoliubov operator. It has been demonstrated that frequency resonances of the excitations with positive and negative energies can lead to their mutual annihilation and appearance of the collective modes with complex frequencies and zero energies. Conditions for the avoided crossing of energy levels have also been discussed. General theory has been verified both numerically and analytically in the weak interaction limit considering an example of vortices in a binary mixture of condensates. Growth of excitations with complex frequencies leads to spiraling of the unit and double vortices out of the condensate center to its periphery and to splitting of the double and higher order vortices to the unit ones.
