BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$, a $S=1/2$ quantum antiferromagnet with a double-layer structure of Cu$^{2+}$ ions in a distorted planar-rectangular coordination and with a dimerized spin singlet ground state, is studied by means of the electron paramagnetic resonance technique. It is argued that multiple absorptions observed at low temperatures are intimately related to a thermally-activated spin-triplet exciton superstructure. Analysis of the angular dependence of exciton modes in BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ allows us to accurately estimate anisotropy parameters. In addition, the temperature dependence of EPR intensity and linewidth is discussed.

Magnetic excitations in a weakly coupled spin dimers and chains compound Cu2Fe2Ge4O13 are measured by inelastic neutron scattering. Both structure factors and dispersion of low energy excitations up to 10 meV energy transfer are well described by a semiclassical spin wave theory involving interacting Fe$^{3+}$ ($S = 5/2$) chains. Additional dispersionless excitations are observed at higher energies, at $\hbar ω= 24$ meV, and associated with singlet-triplet transitions within Cu$^{2+}$-dimers. Both types of excitations can be understood by treating weak interactions between the Cu$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{3+}$ subsystems at the level of the Mean Field/ Random Phase Approximation. However, this simple model fails to account for the measured temperature dependence of the 24 meV mode.

We have investigated the electron spin resonance (ESR) on single crystals of BaCu$\_2$Ge$\_2$O$\_7$ at temperatures between 300 and 2 K and in a large frequency band, 9.6 -134 GHz, in order to test the predictions of a recent theory, proposed by Oshikawa and Affleck (OA), which describes the ESR in a $S$=1/2 Heisenberg chain with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We find, in particular, that the ESR linewidth, $ΔH$, displays a rich temperature behavior. As the temperature decreases from $T\_{max}/2\approx $ 170 K to 50 K, $ΔH$ shows a rapid and linear decrease, $ΔH \sim T$. At low temperatures, below 50 K, $ΔH$ acquires a strong dependence on the magnetic field orientation and for $H \| c$ it shows a $(h/T)^2$ behavior which is due to an induced staggered field $h$, according to OA's prediction.

The occurrence of three-dimensional ordered state is universally observed for all the impurities and the complete temperature -- concentration phase diagrams are obtained, which are qualitatively similar to that in other spin-gap materials. The unique feature is found in the drastic dependence of the transition temperatures on the species of the impurities. The consideration of effective Hamiltonian based on VBS model makes it clear that the ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction and the antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interaction between impurity and edge spins play a key role in the unique feature.

The polarization dependence of magnetic excitations in the quasi one-dimensional antiferromagnet BaCu2Si2O7 is studied as a function of momentum and energy transfer. The results of inelastic neutron scattering measurements are directly compared to semi-analytical calculations based on the chain-Mean Field and Random Phase approximations. A quantitative agreement between theoretically calculated and experimentally measured dynamic structure factors of transverse spin fluctuations is obtained. In contrast, substantial discrepancies are found for longitudinal polarization. This behavior is attributed to intrinsic limitations of the RPA that ignores correlation effects.

The measured longitudinal spectrum is best described as single broad continuum, with no sharp ``longitudinal mode'', in apparent contradiction with the commonly used chain-MF/RPA theories. The observed behavior is also quite different than that previously seen in the related \kcuf material, presumably due to a large difference in the relative strength of inter-chain interactions. The AFMR studies at 4.2 K show the existence of two gaps (40 and 76 GHz) at zero magnetic field and of two spin re-orientation transitions for H||c. The microscopic origin of the two gaps is shown to be Hund's rule coupling which leads to a "residual anisotropy" beyond the compensation of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term by the symmetric anisotropy which would be valid without Hund's coupling.

Pb-doping effect on physical properties of misfit-layered (Bi,Pb)-Sr-Co-O system, in which Co ions form a two-dimensional triangular lattice, was investigated in detail by electronic transport, magnetization and specific-heat measurements. Pb doping enhances the metallic behavior, suggesting that carriers are doped. Pb doping also enhances the magnetic correlation in this system and increases the magnetic transition temperature. We found the existence of the short-range magnetic correlation far above the transition temperature, which seems to induce the spin-glass state coexisting with the ferromagnetic long-range order at low temperatures. Specific-heat measurement suggests that the effective mass of the carrier in (Bi,Pb)-Sr-Co-O is not enhanced so much as reported in NaCo${}_2$O${}_4$. Based on these experimental results, we propose a two-bands model which consists of narrow $a_{1g}$ and rather broad $e'{}_g$ bands. The observed magnetic property and magnetotransport phenomena are explained well by this model.

The impurity induced antiferromagnetic ordering of the doped spin-Peierls magnet Cu(1-x)Mg(x)GeO(3) was studied by ESR technique. Crystals with the Mg concentration x<4% demonstrate a coexistence of paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic ESR modes. This coexistence indicates the separation of a macroscopically uniform sample in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. In the presence of the long-range spin-Peierls order (in a sample with x=1.71%) the volume of the antiferromagnetic phase immediately below the Néel point T_N is much smaller than the volume of the paramagnetic phase. In the presence of the short-range spin-Peierls order (in samples with x=2.88%, x= 3.2%) there are comparable volumes of paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases at T=T_N. The fraction of the antiferromagnetic phase increases with lowering temperature. In the absence of the spin-Peierls dimerization (at x=4.57%)the whole sample exhibits the transition into the antiferromagnetic state and there is no phase separation. The phase separation is explained by the consideration of clusters of staggered magnetization located near impurity atoms. In this model the areas occupied by coherently correlated spins expand with decreasing temperature and the percolation of the ordered area through a macroscopic distance occurs.

The phase diagrams of both Cu_{1-x}Zn_xGeO_3 and CuGe_{1-y}Si_yO_3 closely resemble that of Cu_{1-x}Mg_xGeO_3, including the observation that the spin gap is established at a much higher temperature than the temperature at which the spin-Peierls dimerization attains long-range order. The spin-Peierls transitions in doped samples exhibit unusual phase transition behavior, characterized by highly rounded phase transitions, Lorentzian squared lineshapes, and very long relaxation times. Phenomenological explanations for these observations are given by considering the effects of competing random bond interactions as well as random fields generated by the dopants. We have also confirmed the reentrance of the spin-Peierls phase when the temperature is lowered through the antiferromagnetic ordering transition. The low temperature re-entrance of the spin-Peierls phase has been explained speculatively using a local phase separation scheme between the spin-Peierls phase and the Neel phase.

The temperature-concentration phase diagram of the Si-doped spin-Peierls compound CuGeO$_{3}$ is investigated by means of neutron scattering and muon spin rotation spectroscopy in order to determine the microscopic distribution of the magnetic and lattice dimerised regions as a function of doping. The analysis of the zero-field muon spectra has confirmed the spatial inhomogeneity of the staggered magnetisation that characterises the antiferromagnetic superlattice peaks observed with neutrons. In addition, the variation of the macroscopic order parameter with doping can be understood by considering the evolution of the local magnetic moment as well as of the various regions contributing to the muon signal.

The doping effect of the folded phonon mode at 98 cm$^{-1}$ was investigated on the Si-doped CuGeO$_3$ by magneto-optical measurements in far-infrared (FIR) region under high magnetic field. The folded phonon mode at 98 cm$^{-1}$ appears not only in the dimerized (D) phase but also in the dimerized-anitiferromagnetic (DAF) phase on the doped CuGeO$_3$. The splitting was observed in the incommensurate (IC) phase and the antiferromagnetically ordered incommensurate (IAF) phase above $H_C$. The split-off branches exhibit different field dependence from that of the pure CuGeO$_3$ in the vicinity of $H_C$, and the discrepancy in the IAF phase is larger than that in the IC phase. It is caused by the interaction between the solitons and the impurities.

While κof the pure CuGeO_3 is enhanced with the application of higher magnetic fields, an anomalous plateau feature shows up in the κ(H) profile in the I phase of the Mg-doped samples which includes antiferromagnetic ordering (I-AF phase). With the help of specific heat data, taken supplementally for the identical samples, the above features are well understood that phonons are strongly scattered by spin solitons and that κin the I phase is governed by their spatial distribution. In particular, the plateau feature in the doped samples suggests "freezing" of the solitons, in which antiferromagnetism must be playing an essential role because this feature is absent at temperatures above T_N.

Weak ferromagnetism of quasi-one-dimensional S = 1/2 antiferromagnet BaCu$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$ is studied by the magnetization measurement. The spontaneous magnetization appears along the b axis. The local symmetry between the in-chain nearest neighbor spins allows the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, and the only possible spatial configuration of the weak ferromagnetic moment per spin determines the sign of the inter-chain interaction. A weak $a$-axis magnetic field can change the direction of the magnetization to the $a$-axis direction, which shows that the spin chain forms a weakly coupled weak-ferromagnetic chain system.

Thermal conductivity κis measured at very low temperatures down to 0.28 K for pure and Mg-doped CuGeO_3 single crystals. The doped samples carry larger amount of heat than the pure sample at the lowest temperature. This is because antiferromagnetic magnons appear in the doped samples and are responsible for the additional heat conductivity, while κof the pure sample represents phonon conductivity at such low temperatures. The maximum energy of the magnon is estimated to be much lower than the spin-Peierls-gap energy. The result presents the first example that κat very low temperatures probes the magnon transport in disorder-induced antiferromagnetic phase of spin-gap systems.

We report a synchrotron x-ray scattering study of the diluted spin-Peierls (SP) material Cu_{1-x}Mg_xGeO_3. In a recent paper we have shown that the SP dimerization attains long-range order only for x < x_c = 0.022(0.001). Here we report that the SP transition is reentrant in the vicinity of the critical concentration x_c. This is manifested by broadening of the SP dimerization superlattice peaks below the reentrance temperature, T_r, which may mean either the complete loss of the long-range SP order or the development of a short-range ordered component within the long-range ordered SP state. Marked hysteresis and very large relaxation times are found in the samples with Mg concentrations in the vicinity of x_c. The reentrant transition is likely related to the competing Neel transition which occurs at a temperature similar to T_r. We argue that impurity-induced competing interchain interactions play an essential role in these phenomena.

We have performed detailed magnetic susceptibility measurements as well as synchrotron x-ray diffraction studies to determine the temperature vs concentration ($T$ - $x$) phase diagram of Cu${}_{1-x}$Mg${}_x$GeO${}_3$. We observe clear double peaks in the magnetic susceptibility implying two antiferromagnetic (AF) transition temperatures in samples with Mg concentrations in the range 0.0237 $\le x \le$ 0.0271. We also observe a drastic change in the inverse correlation length in this concentration range by x-ray diffraction. The drastic change of the AF transition temperature as well as the disappearance of the spin-Peierls (SP) phase have been clarified; these results are consistent with a first-order phase transition between dimerized AF (D-AF) and uniform AF (U-AF) phases as reported by T. Masuda {\it et al.} \lbrack Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 80}, 4566 (1998)\rbrack. The $T$ - $x$ phase diagram of Cu${}_{1-x}$Zn${}_x$GeO${}_3$ is similar to that of Cu${}_{1-x}$Mg${}_x$GeO${}_3$, which suggests that the present phase transition is universal for Cu${}_{1-x}M_{x}$GeO${}_3$.

The thermal conductivity $κ$ is measured in a series of Cu_1-xMg_xGeO_3 single crystals in magnetic fields up to 16 T. It has turned out that heat transport by spin excitations is coherent for lightly doped samples, in which the spin-Peierls (SP) transition exists, at temperatures well above the SP transition temperature T_SP. Depression of this spin heat transport appears below T^*, at which the spin gap locally opens. T^* is not modified with Mg-doping and that T^* for each Mg-doped sample remains as high as T_SP of pure CuGeO_3, in contrast to T_SP which is strongly suppressed with Mg-doping. The spin-gap opening enhances phonon part of the heat transport because of reduced scattering by the spin excitations, producing an unusual peak. This peak diminishes when the spin gap is suppressed both in magnetic fields and with the Mg-doping.

Substituting nonmagnetic Mg$^{2+}$ (S=0) ions for Ni$^{2+}$ (S=1) induces a magnetically ordered state at low temperatures. Tsp decreases while TN increases with increasing x in low doping region. For higher x, however, the SP state disappears and only the AF state remains. These features are common for all the doped CuGeO3 systems so far studied, indicating the existence of universal T-x phase diagram. Recently, Masuda et al. carried out comprehensive magnetic susceptibility (chi) measurements of (Cu1-xMgx)GeO3, in which doping concentration can be controlled significantly better than the Zn doped systems. They found that TN suddenly jumps from 3.43 to 3.98K at the critical concentration xc sim 0.023 and that a drop in chi corresponding to the SP ordering also disappears at x>xc. They thus concluded that there is a compositional phase boundary between two distinct magnetic phases. To clarify the nature of two phases, we performed neutron-scattering measurements on (Cu1-xMgx)GeO3 single crystals with various x. Analysis of the data at fixed temperature points as a function of doping concentration has revealed sudden changes of order parameters at the critical concentration xc=0.027 +- 0.001. At finite temperatures below TN, the drastic increase of the AF moment takes place at xc. The spin-Peierls order parameter delta associated with lattice dimerization shows a precipitous decrease at all temperature below Tsp. However, it goes to zero above xc only at the low temperature limit.

We have measured the magnetic susceptibilities of single crystals of Cu_{1-x}Zn_xGeO_3 with extremely low Zn concentration (x) lower than x=5x10^{-3} at very low temperatures to investigate the spin-Peierls and antiferromagnetic transitions. The results show that the undoped CuGeO_3 has no antiferromagnetic phase down to 12 mK and there exists an antiferromagnetic long-range order with the easy axis along the $c$ axis for x down to 1.12(2)x10^{-3}. The minimum observed Neel temperature was 0.0285 K for x=1.12(2)x10^{-3} sample. From the concentration dependence of the Neel temperature it is concluded that there is no critical concentration for the occurrence of the antiferromagnetic long-range order.

Abstract:
We discovered a first-order phase transition between dimerized-antiferromagnetic and uniform-antiferromagnetic phases in impurity-doped spin-Peierls (SP) cuprate Cu{1-x}MgxGeO3. As impurity concentration increases, linear reduction of SP transition temperature (T{SP}) and linear increase of Neel temperature (TN) are observed up to x = 0.023. At this critical concentration (xc) SP transition suddenly disappears and TN jumps discontinuously. The peak of the susceptibility at xc around TN is not so sharp as those at other concentrations, which indicates the phase separation of low and high concentration phases. These results indicate the existence of the first-order phase transition between dimerized-antiferromagnetic and uniform-antiferromagnetic long-range orders.

Abstract:
The magnetic structure of Ba_2CuGe_2O_7 is investigated by neutron diffraction in magnetic fields applied along several directions in the $(a,b)$ plane of the crystal. In relatively weak fields, $H\lesssim 0.5$~T, the propagation vector of the spin-spiral rotates to form a finite angle with the field direction. This angle depends on the orientation of $H$ itself. The rotation of the propagation…

The rotation of the propagation vector is accompanied by a re-orientation of the plane of spin rotation in the spiral. The observed behaviour is well described by a continuous-limit form of a free energy functional that includes exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, as well as the Zeeman energy and an empirical anisotropy term.

We report an observation of a commensurate-incommensurate phase transition in the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya spiral antiferromagnet Ba_2 Cu Ge_2 O_7. The transition is induced by an external magnetic field applied along the c-axis of the tetragonal structure, i. e., in the plane of spin rotation. Bulk magnetic measurements and neutron diffraction experiments show that the transition occurs in a critical field Hc=2.1T. Experimental results for the period of the magnetic structure and magnetization as functions of magnetic field are in quantitative agreement with our exact analytical solution for Dzyaloshinskii's model of commensurate-incommensurate transitions in spiral magnets.

Comprehensive neutron scattering studies were carried out on a series of high-quality single crystals of Cu_{1-x}Zn_xGeO_3. The Zn concentration, x, was determined for each sample using Electron Probe Micro-Analysis. The measured Zn concentrations were found to be 40-80% lower than the nominal values. Nevertheless the measured concentrations cover a wide range which enables a systematic study of the effects due to Zn-doping. We have confirmed the coexistence of spin-Peierls (SP) and antiferromagnetic (AF) orderings at low temperatures and the measured phase diagram is presented. Most surprisingly, long-range AF ordering occurs even in the lowest available Zn concentration, x=0.42%, which places important constraints on theoretical models of the AF-SP coexistence. Magnetic excitations are also examined in detail. The AF excitations are sharp at low energies and show no considerable broadening as x increases indicating that the AF ordering remains long ranged for x up to 4.7%. On the other hand, the SP phase exhibits increasing disorder as x increases, as shown from the broadening of the SP excitations as well as the dimer reflection peaks.

We have measured temperature dependence of low-frequency Raman spectra in CuGeO$_3$, and have observed the quasi-elastic scattering in the $(c,c)$ polarization above the spin-Peierls transition temperature. We attribute it to the fluctuations of energy density in the spin system. The magnetic specific heat and an inverse of the magnetic correlation length can be derived from the quasi-elastic scattering. The inverse of the magnetic correlation length is proportional to $(T-T_{SP})^{1/2}$ at high temperatures. We compare the specific heat with a competing-$J$ model. This model cannot explain quantitatively both the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility with the same parameters. The origin of this discrepancy is discussed.

The results are well described by a model based on weakly interacting antiferromagnetic dimers. A strongly temperature-dependent dispersion in the gap modes was found. We suggest that the observed excitations are analogous to magneto-excitons in light rare-earth compounds, but are an intrinsic property of a simple Heisenberg Hamiltonian for the S=1/2 magnetic bilayer.

An antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering is confirmed for samples with $x\geq 0.02$, in complete agreement with previous reports. We show that the spin-Peierls (SP) phase transition persists to 6\% Zn, whereas previous magnetic susceptibility measurements reported a deterioration of the SP transition above 2\% Zn. We present some details of the successive transitions upon lowering temperature into the spin-Peierls phase which is followed by a transition into an antiferromagnetically ordered phase. Below the Néel temperature we observe the coexistence of the SP lattice dimerization and AF states.
