Near-infrared (NIR) pump-terahertz (THz) probe spectroscopy is used to investigate the charge and spin exciations in a strongly correlated electron compound Na0.5CoO2. This compound exhibits a coexistence of various charge and spin orders arising from intricate interactions among charge, spin, and orbital degrees of freedom. NIR pulses create significantly diverse effects on the charge and spin orders; while the charge order is easily melted, coherent magnon excitations are present in all fluences examined. Furthermore, a novel π phase shift of the coherent magnon oscillations is observed in the pump-induced change of the terahertz electric field between regions of increasing and decreasing field change. These results unequivocally illustrate that ultrashort laser pulses enable the disentanglement of different interactions within complex systems characterized by multiple orders, providing a fresh perspective on the interplay between itinerant and localized electrons within the Co 3d t2g multiplets.

Coexisting orders are key features of strongly correlated materials and underlie many intriguing phenomena from unconventional superconductivity to topological orders. Here, we report the coexistence of two interacting charge-density-wave (CDW) orders in EuTe4, a layered crystal that has drawn considerable attention owing to its anomalous thermal hysteresis and a semiconducting CDW state despite the absence of perfect FS nesting. By accessing unoccupied conduction bands with time- and angle-resolved photoemission measurements, we find that mono- and bi-layers of Te in the unit cell host different CDWs that are associated with distinct energy gaps. The two gaps display dichotomous evolutions following photoexcitation, where the larger bilayer CDW gap exhibits less renormalization and faster recovery. Surprisingly, the CDW in the Te monolayer displays an additional momentum-dependent gap renormalization that cannot be captured by density-functional theory calculations. This phenomenon is attributed to interlayer interactions between the two CDW orders, which account for the semiconducting nature of the equilibrium state. Our findings not only offer microscopic insights into the correlated ground state of EuTe4 but also provide a general non-equilibrium approach to understand coexisting, layer-dependent orders in a complex system.

Ultrafast light-matter interaction has emerged as a powerful tool to control and probe the macroscopic properties of functional materials, especially two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides which can form different structural phases with distinct physical properties. However, it is often difficult to accurately determine the transient optical constants. In this work, we developed a near-infrared pump - terahertz to midinfrared (12-22 THz) probe system in transmission geometry to measure the transient optical conductivity in 2H-MoTe2 layered material. By performing separate measurements on bulk and thin-film samples, we are able to overcome issues related to nonuniform substrate thickness and penetration depth mismatch and to extract the transient optical constants reliably. Our results show that photoexcitation at 690 nm induces a transient insulator-metal transition, while photoexcitation at 2 um has a much smaller effect due to the photon energy being smaller than the band gap of the material. Combining this with a single-color pump-probe measurement, we show that the transient response evolves towards 1T' phase at higher flunece. Our work provides a comprehensive understanding of the photoinduced phase transition in the 2H-MoTe2 system.

The ultrafast manipulation of quantum material has led to many novel and significant discoveries. Among them, the light-induced transient superconductivity in cuprates achieved by melting competing stripe orders represents a highly appealing accomplishment. However, recent investigations have shown that the notion of photoinduced superconductivity remains a topic of controversy, and its elucidation solely through c-axis time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy remains an arduous task. Here, we measure the in-plane and out-of-plane transient terahertz responses simultaneously in the stripe-ordered non-superconducting La$_{2-x}$Ba$_{x}$CuO$_4$ after near-infrared excitations. We find that although a pump-induced reflectivity edge appears in the c-axis reflectance spectrum, the reflectivity along the CuO$_2$ planes decreases simultaneously, indicating an enhancement in the scattering rate of quasiparticles. This in-plane transient response is clearly distinct from the features associated with superconducting condensation. Therefore, we conclude the out-of-plane transient responses cannot be explained by an equivalent of Josephson tunneling. Notably, those pump-induced terahertz responses remain consistent even when we vary the near-infrared optical pump wavelengths and hole concentrations. Our results provide a critical evidence that transient three-dimensional superconductivity cannot be induced by melting the competing stripe orders with pump pulses whose photon energy is much higher than the superconducting gap of cuprates.

The study of interaction between different degrees of freedom in solids is of fundamental importance to understand the functionalities of materials. One striking example of such interaction is the intertwined coupling or competition between superconductivity (SC), charge density wave (CDW), pseudogap state (PG), and other exotic phases in cuprate superconductors. Recent emergence of nonlinear Terahertz (THz) third harmonic generation (THG) spectroscopy provides a powerful tool for exploring the collective (Higgs) modes of superconductivity order parameters, and its interaction with intertwined/competing phases. In this study, we report on nonlinear THz THG spectroscopy of the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ (YBCO) thin films with different doping. We identify a characteristic temperature $T_{THG}$, below which third order suscepetility $χ^{(3)}$ emerges. Notably, the $T_{THG}$ is coincident with the crossover temperature $T^*$ of pseudogap in a wide range doping of phase diagram. Upon entering the superconducting state, THG increases sharply but exhibits an abnormal dip feature near $T_c$ which is more clearly seen in optimally doped sample. Strikingly, we observe a beating structure directly in the measured real time waveform of THG signal. Fourier transformation of the time domain waveform gives two separate modes below and above original THG frequency. The observation strongly indicates that an additional mode, presumably Higgs mode, appears at $T_c$ and couples to the mode already developed below $T^*$. The strong coupling effect offers new insight into the interplay between superconductivity and pseudogap. The result unambiguously suggests that the pseudogap phase is not a precursor of superconductivity but represents a distinct order.

The optical conductivity of the new Dirac semimetal candidate Ir$_2$In$_8$Se is measured in a frequency range from 40 to 30000 cm$^{-1}$ at temperatures from 300 K down to 10 K. The measurement reveals that the compound is a low carrier density metal. We find that the real part of the conductivity $σ_1(ω)$ is linear in frequency over a broad range from 500 to 4000 cm$^{-1}$ at 300 K and varies slightly with cooling. This linearity strongly suggests the presence of three-dimensional linear electronic bands with band crossings near the Fermi level. Band structure calculations indicate the presence of type-II Dirac points. By comparing our data with the optical conductivity computed from the band structure, we conclude that the observed linear dependence mainly originates from the Dirac cones and the transition between the Dirac cones and the next lower bands. In addition, a weak energy gap feature is resolved below the charge density wave phase transition temperature in reflectivity spectra. An enhanced structure arising from the imperfect Fermi surface nesting is identified in the electronic susceptibility function, suggesting a Fermi surface nesting driven instability.

Kagome magnet TbMn$_6$Sn$_6$ is a new type of topological material that is known to support exotic quantum magnetic states. Experimental work has identified that TbMn$_6$Sn$_6$ hosts Dirac electronic states that could lead to topological and Chern quantum phases, but the optical response of the Dirac fermions of TbMn$_6$Sn$_6$ and its properties remain to be explored. Here, we perform optical spectroscopy measurement combined with first-principles calculations on single-crystal sample of TbMn$_6$Sn$_6$ to investigate the associated exotic phenomena. TbMn$_6$Sn$_6$ exhibits frequency-independent optical conductivity spectra in a broad range from 1800 to 3000 cm$^{-1}$ (220-370 meV) in experiments. The theoretical band structures and optical conductivity spectra are calculated with several shifted Fermi energy to compare with the experiment. The theoretical spectra with 0.56 eV shift for Fermi energy are well consistent with our experimental results. Besides, the massive quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) Dirac bands, which have linear band dispersion in $k_x$-$k_y$ plane and no band dispersion along the $k_z$ direction, exist close to the shifted Fermi energy. According to tight-binding model analysis, the quasi-2D Dirac bands give rise to a flat optical conductivity, while its value is smaller than, about one tenth of, that from the calculations and experiments. It indicates that the other trivial bands also contribute to the flat optical conductivity.

Understanding the electronic structural properties is a crucial way to comprehend the origin of the structural phase transition. We performed a combined optical and ultrafast pump-probe study on the compound across the transition temperature. The phase transition leads to abrupt changes of both optical spectra and ultrafast electronic relaxation dynamics. The measurements revealed a sudden reconstruction of band structure. We elaborate that the phase transition is of the first order and can not be attributed to the conventional density-wave type instability. Our work is illuminating for understanding the origin of the structural phase transition.

We report the observation of two-fold rotation symmetry in charge density wave (CDW) state in the newly discovered Kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. Below its CDW transition temperature ($T_{CDW}$), the polarization rotation of the reflected laser beam promptly emerges and increases close to about 1 mrad, and the rotation angle shows two-fold rotation symmetry. With femtosecond laser pulse pumping, the rotation angle can be easily suppressed and then recovers in several picoseconds accompanied with coherent oscillations. Significantly, the oscillations in the signal also experience a 180 degree periodic change. Our investigation provides clear optical evidence for the formation of nematic order with two-fold rotation symmetry just below $T_{CDW}$. The results imply a immediate development of nematicity and possible time-reversal symmetry breaking in CDW state of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$.

However, the anisotropic properties of CuTe remain to be explored. Here we performed combined transport, polarized infrared reflectivity, and ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy to investigate the underlying CDW physics of CuTe. Polarized optical measurement clearly revealed that an energy gap gradually forms along the a-axis upon cooling, while optical evidence of gap signature is absent along the b-axis, suggesting pronounced electronic anisotropy in this quasi-2D material. Time-resolved optical reflectivity measurement revealed that the amplitude and relaxation time of photo-excited quasiparticles change dramatically across the CDW phase transition. Taking fast Fourier transformation of the oscillation signals arising from collective excitations, we identify the 1.65-THz mode as the CDW amplitude mode, whose energy softens gradually at elevated temperatures. Consequently, we provide further evidence for the formation of completely anisotropic CDW order in CuTe, which is quite rare in quasi-2D materials.

Searching for Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a fascinating and challenging problem. Much effort has been devoted to honeycomb lattice candidates with strong spin-orbit coupling in 5d-electron iridates and 4delectron RuCl3. Recently, theoretical studies suggested that the 3d7 Co-based honeycomb materials with high spin state S=3/2 and effective orbital angular momentum L=1 could also be promising candidates of Kitaev QSL. One of the candidates, BaCo2(AsO4)2, was revisited recently. The long range magnetic order in BaCo2(AsO4)2 can be suppressed by very weak in-plane magnetic field, suggesting its proximity to Kitaev QSL. Here we perform time domain terahertz spectroscopy measurement to study the magnetic excitations on BaCo2(AsO4)2. We observe different magnon excitations upon increasing external magnetic field. In particular, the system is easily driven to a field-polarized paramagnetic phase, after the long range magnetic order is suppressed by a weak field Hc 2. The spectra beyond Hc2 are dominated by single magnon and two magnon excitations without showing signature of QSL. We discuss the similarity and difference of the excitation spectra between BaCo2(AsO4)2 and the widely studied Kitaev QSL candidate RuCl3.

Hysteresis underlies a large number of phase transitions in solids, giving rise to exotic metastable states that are otherwise inaccessible. Here, we report an unconventional hysteretic transition in a quasi-2D material, EuTe4. By combining transport, photoemission, diffraction, and x-ray absorption measurements, we observed that the hysteresis loop has a temperature width of more than 400 K, setting a record among crystalline solids. The transition has an origin distinct from known mechanisms, lying entirely within the incommensurate charge-density-wave (CDW) phase of EuTe4 with no change in the CDW modulation periodicity. We interpret the hysteresis as an unusual switching of the relative CDW phases in different layers, a phenomenon unique to quasi-2D compounds that is not present in either purely 2D or strongly-coupled 3D systems. Our findings challenge the established theories on metastable states in density wave systems, pushing the boundary of understanding hysteretic transitions in a broken-symmetry state.

Recently, kagome lattice metal AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A = K, Rb, Cs) family has received wide attention due to its presence of superconductivity, charge density wave (CDW) and peculiar properties from topological nontrivial electronic structure. With time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy, we show that the excited quasiparticle relaxation dynamics can be explained by formation of energy gap below the phase transition being similar to a usual second-order CDW condensate, by contrast, the structure change is predominantly first order phase transition. Furthermore, no CDW amplitude mode is identified in the ordered phase. The results suggest that the CDW order is very different from the traditional CDW condensate. We also find that weak pump pulse can non-thermally melt the CDW order and drive the sample into its high temperature phase, revealing the fact that the difference in lattice potential between those phases is small.

Utrafast control of material physical properties represents a rapid developing field in condensed matter physics. Yet, accessing to the long-lived photoinduced electronic states is still in its early stage, especially with respect to an insulator to metal phase transition. Here, by combing transport measurement with ultrashort photoexcitation and coherent phonon spectroscopy, we report on photoinduced multistage phase transitions in Ta2NiSe5. Upon excitation by weak pulse intensity, the system is triggered to a short-lived state accompanied by a structural change. Further increasing the excitation intensity beyond a threshold, a photoinduced steady new state is achieved where the resistivity drops by more than four orders at temperature 50 K. This new state is thermally stable up to at least 350 K and exhibits the lattice structure different from any of the thermally accessible equilibrium states. Transmission electron microscopy reveals an in-chain Ta atom displacement in the photoinduced new structure phase. We also found that nano-sheet samples with the thickness less than the optical penetration depth are required for attaining a complete transition.

However, there was a debate on whether the observed phase transition at 240 K could be attributed to the formation of CDW order. To address the issue, we performed optical spectroscopy and ultrafast pump-probe measurements on single crystal samples of Bi$_2$Rh$_3$Se$_2$. Our optical conductivity measurement reveals clearly the formation of an energy gap with associated spectral change only at low energies, yielding strong evidence for a CDW phase transition at 240 K. Time resolved pump-probe measurement provides further support for the CDW phase transition. The amplitude and relaxation time of quasiparticles extracted from the photoinduced reflectivity show strong enhancement near transition temperature, yielding further evidence for the CDW energy gap formation. Additionally, a collective mode is identified from the oscillations in the pump-probe time delay at low temperature. This mode, whose frequency decreases gradually at elevated temperature, could be naturally attributed to the amplitude mode of CDW state.

Strong coupling between magnon and electromagnetic wave can lead to the formation of a coupled spinphoton quasiparticle named as magnon-polariton. The phenomenon is well studied for ferromagnetic systems inside microwave cavities in recent years. However, formation of magnon-polariton is rarely seen for an antiferromagnet (AFM) because the strong coupling condition is not easily fulfilled. Here we present time-domain terahertz measurement on a multiferroic polar antiferromagnet Fe2Mo3O8. We find clearly beating between two modes at frequencies above and below the electric-active magnon frequency below TN, which we assign to the formation of AFM magnon-polariton. An ultra-strong spin-photon coupling effect is derived based on the energy level splitting. However, the AFM magnon-polariton is absent in the frequency domain measurement. Our work reveals that the coherent magnon formation driven by the ultrashort THz pulse provides a new way to detect polariton mode splitting.

The dynamical properties of single crystal 1T-TaS$_{2}$ are investigated both in commensurate charge density wave state (CCDW state) and hidden charge density wave state (HCDW state). We develop a useful criterion in time-domain transmission terahertz measurement to judge whether the compound is driven into a metastable state or still in its virgin state. An increase of terahertz conductivity by two orders of magnitude from CCDW state to HCDW state is obtained by taking account of the penetration depth mismatch, which is in agreement with reported \emph{dc} transport measurement. Upon weak pumping, only transient processes with rapid decay dynamics are triggered in both CCDW and HCDW states. We compare the conductivity increases in terahertz frequency range between transient and HCDW states and suggest that fluctuated metallic domain walls may develop in the transient states.

Intense laser pulses have recently emerged as a tool to tune between different orders in complex quantum materials. Among different light-induced phenomena, transient superconductivity far above the equilibrium transition temperature in cuprates is particularly attractive. Key to those experiments was the resonant pumping of specific phonon modes, which was believed to induce superconducting phase coherence by suppressing the competing orders or modifying the structure slightly. Here, we present a comprehensive study of photo-induced nonequilibrium response in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$. We find that upon photo-excitations, Josephson plasma edge in superconducting state is initially removed accompanied by quasiparticle excitations, and subsequently reappears at frequency lower than the static plasma edge within short time. In normal state, an enhancement or weaker edge-like shape is indeed induced by pump pulses in the reflectance spectrum accompanied by simultaneous rises in both real and imaginary parts of conductivity. We compare the pump-induced effects between near- and mid-infrared excitations and exclude phonon pumping as a scenario for the photo-induced effects above. We further elaborate the transient responses in normal state are unlikely to be explained by photo-induced superconductivity.

We report a novel quasi-two dimensional compound of EuTe4 hosting charge density waves (CDW) instability. The compound has a crystallographic structure in a orthorhombic space group Pmmn (No.59) with cell parameters a = 4.6347(2)Å, b = 4.5119(2)Å, c = 15.6747(10)Å at room temperature. The pristine structure contains consecutive near-square Te sheets separated by corrugated Eu-Te slabs. Upon cooling, the compound experiences a phase transition near 255 K. X-ray crystallographic analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements reveal strong structural distortions in the low temperature phase, showing a superstructure with a periodic formation of Te-trimers in the monolayer Te sheets, yielding evidence for the formation of CDW order. The charge transport properties show a semiconducting behavior in the CDW state. Density functional theory calculations reveals a Fermi surface nesting driven instability with a nesting vector in good agreement with the one observed experimentally. Our finding provides a promising system for the study of CDW driven 2D semiconducting mechanisms, which would shed a new light on exploring novel 2D semiconductors with collective electronic states.

This appears to be true only for small pumping fluence. Here we show that the intense NIR pumping has different effect. We perform an intense NIR pump, c-axis terahertz probe measurement on an electron-doped cuprate superconductor Pr$_{0.88}$LaCe$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ with T$_c$=22 K. Recent development of ultrashort laser pulses allows for optical control of structural and electronic properties of complex quantum materials. The layered transition metal dichalcogenide MoTe2, which can crystalize into several different structures with distinct topological and electronic properties, provides possibilities to control or switch between different phases. In this study we report a photo-induced sub-picosecond structural transition between the type-II Weyl semimetal phase and normal semimetal phase in bulk crystalline MoTe2 by using ultrafast pump-probe and time-resolved second harmonic generation spectroscopy. The phase transition is most clearly characterized by the dramatic change of the shear oscillation mode and the intensity loss of second harmonic generation. This work opens up new possibilities for ultrafast manipulation of the topological properties of solids, enabling potentially practical applications for topological switch device with ultrafast excitations.

Kondo-based semimetals and semiconductors are of extensive current interest as a viable platform for strongly correlated states. It is thus important to understand the routes towards such dilute-carrier correlated states. One established pathway is through Kondo effect in metallic non-magnetic analogues. Here we advance a new mechanism, through which Kondo-based semimetals develop out of conduction electrons with a low carrier-density in the presence of an even number of rare-earth sites. We demonstrate this effect by studying the Kondo material Yb3Ir4Ge13 along with its closed-f-shell counterpart, Lu3Ir4Ge13. Through magnetotransport, optical conductivity and thermodynamic measurements, we establish that the correlated semimetallic state of Yb3Ir4Ge13 below its Kondo temperature originates from the Kondo effect of a low carrier conduction-electron background. In addition, it displays fragile magnetism at very low temperatures, which, in turn, can be tuned to a non Fermi liquid regime through Lu-for-Yb substitution. These findings are connected with recent theoretical studies in simplified models. Our results open an entirely new venue to explore the strong correlation physics in a semimetallic environment.

We use time-domain terahertz spectroscopy to measure the low energy conductivity and magnons in RuCl$_3$ under external magnetic field. At zero field, an oscillation with a frequency of 0.62 THz is clearly observed in time-domain spectrum below T$_N$, which is identified as a magnon excitation in the magnetic order state. The magnon excitation is not affected by the external magnetic field $\textbf{H}_{DC}$ when it is applied along the c-axis, but is clearly suppressed when $\textbf{H}_{DC}$ is applied within ab plane. More interestingly, when the magnetic component of THz wave $\textbf{h}(t)$ is perpendicular to the applied in-plane magnetic field, we observe another coherent oscillation at slightly higher energy scale at the field above 2 T, which is eventually suppressed for $H_{DC}>$5 T. The measurement seems to indicate that the in-plane magnetic field can lift the degeneracy of two branches of low energy magnons at $Γ$ point. The low energy optical conductivity calculated from the measured transmission spectrum is dominated by a broad continuum contribution, which is not affected by changing either temperature or external magnetic field. The continuum is likely to be related to the fractional spin excitation due to dominated Kitaev interaction in the material.

We report near and mid-infrared pump c-axis terahertz probe measurement on a superconducting single crystal La$_{1.905}$Ba$_{0.095}$CuO$_4$ with T$_c$=32 K. The measurement reveals that the pump-induced change occurs predominantly at the Josephson plasma edge position below T$_c$. Upon excited by the strong near-infrared pulses, the superconducting state is severely disturbed and incoherent quasiparticle excitations develop in frequency regime above the static plasma edge. However, within very short time delay ($\sim$1.5 ps) we observe the reappearance of a very sharp Josephson plasma edge at frequency lower than the static Josephson plasma edge and the emergence of a new light-induced Josephson mode at higher energy. The results imply that the light can induce new Josephson couplings with different coupling strengths. Similar but weaker effect is observed for the mid-infrared pump. No pump induced effect is detected above T$_c$.

Three-dimensional topological insulators (3D TIs) represent novel states of quantum matters in which surface states are protected by time-reversal symmetry and an inversion occurs between bulk conduction- and valence-bands. However, the bulk-band inversion which is intimately tied to the topologically nontrivial nature of 3D TIs has rarely been investigated by experiments. Besides, 3D massive Dirac fermions with nearly near band dispersions were seldom observed in TIs. Recently, a van der Waals crystal, ZrTe5, was theoretically predicted to be a TI. Here, we report an infrared transmission study of a high-mobility (~33,000 cm$^2$/(Vs)) multilayer ZrTe5 flake at magnetic fields ($B$) up to 35 T. Our observation of a linear relationship between the zero-magnetic-field optical absorption and the photon energy, a bandgap of ~10 meV and a $\sqrt{B}$ dependence of the Landau level (LL) transition energies at low magnetic fields demonstrates 3D massive Dirac fermions with nearly linear band dispersions in this system. More importantly, the reemergence of the intra-LL transitions at magnetic fields higher than 17 T reveals the energy cross between the two zeroth LLs, which reflects the inversion between the bulk conduction- and valence-bands. Our results not only provide spectroscopic evidence for the TI state in ZrTe5 but also open up a new avenue for fundamental studies of Dirac fermions in van der Waals materials.

We show that CeCd$_3$As$_3$ represents a {\it rare} experimental realization of an antiferromagnetic Ising model on a two dimensional triangular lattice and thus provides a prototype example for geometrical frustration. The layered lanthanum silver antimonide LaAgSb$_2$ was known to experience two charge density (CDW) phase transitions, which were proposed recently to be closely related to the newly identified Dirac cone. We present optical spectroscopy and ultrafast pump-probe measurement on the compound. The development of energy gaps were clearly observed below the phase transition temperatures in optical conductivity, which removes most part of the free carrier spectral weight. Time resolved measurement demonstrated the emergence of strong oscillations upon entering the CDW states, which were illuminated to come from the amplitude mode of CDW collective excitations. The frequencies of them are surprisingly low: only 0.12 THz for the CDW order with higher transition temperature and 0.34 THz for the lower one, which shall be caused by their small modulation wave vectors. Furthermore, the amplitude and relaxation time of photoinduced reflectivity stayed unchanged across the two phase transitions, which might be connected to the extremely low energy scales of amplitude modes.

In this article, we review the charge excitations of heavy fermion compounds probed by infrared spectroscopy. The article is not meant to be a comprehensive survey of experimental investigations. Rather it focuses on the dependence of charge excitations on the hybridization strength. In this context, the infrared properties of the Ce$_m$M$_n$In$_{3m+2n}$ family are discussed in detail since the hybridization strengths differ dramatically in different members despite their similar lattice structures. Investigations on some mixed valent compounds are also presented aiming to elucidate the generic trend on the evolution. In particular, we address the scaling between hybridization energy gap $Δ_{dir}$ and the hybridization strength $\tilde{V}$($\propto\sqrt{WT_K}$) in a wide range of heavy fermions compounds which demonstrates that the periodic Anderson model can generally and quantitatively describe the low-energy charge excitations.

We present anisotropic transport and optical spectroscopy studies on EuCd_2As_2. The measurements reveal that EuCd_2As_2 is a low carrier density semimetal with moderate anisotropic resistivity ratio. The charge carriers experience very strong scattering from Eu magnetic moments, resulting in a Kondo-like increase of resistivity at low temperature. Below the antiferromagnetic transition temperature at $T_N$= 9.5 K, the resistivity drops sharply due to the reduced scattering from the ordered Eu moments. Nevertheless, the anisotropic ratio of $ρ_c/ρ_{ab}$ keeps increasing, suggesting that the antiferromagnetic coupling is along the c-axis. The optical spectroscopy measurement further reveals, besides an overdamped reflectance plasma edge at low energy, a strong coupling between phonon and electronic continuum. Our study suggests that EuCd_2As_2 is a promising candidate displaying intriguing interplay among charge, magnetism and the underlying crystal lattice.

We performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the Ni-based superconductor SrNi$_2$As$_2$. Electron and hole Fermi surface pockets are observed, but their different shapes and sizes lead to very poor nesting conditions. The experimental electronic band structure of SrNi$_2$As$_2$ is in good agreement with first-principles calculations after a slight renormalization (by a factor 1.1), confirming the picture of Hund's exchange-dominated electronic correlations decreasing with increasing filling of the $3d$ shell in the Fe-, Co- and Ni-based compounds. These findings emphasize the importance of Hund's coupling and $3d$-orbital filling as key tuning parameters of electronic correlations in transition metal pnictides.

We report optical spectroscopy and ultrafast pump-probe measurements on the antiferromagnetic heavy fermion compound CePt$_2$In$_7$, a member showing stronger two dimensionality than other compounds in CeIn$_3$-derived heavy-fermion family. We identify clear and typical hybridization spectral structures at low temperature from the two different spectroscopy probes. However, the strength and related energy scale of the hybridization are much weaker and smaller than that in the superconducting compounds CeCoIn$_5$ and CeIrIn$_5$. The features are more similar to observations on the antiferromagnetic compounds CeIn$_3$ and CeRhIn$_5$ in the same family. The results clearly indicate that the Kondo interaction and hybridizations exist in the antiferromagnetic compounds but with weaker strength.

We have performed optical spectroscopy study on $TlNi_2Se_2$ single crystals over a broad frequency range at various temperatures. The overall optical reflectance spectra are similar to those observed in its isostructure $BaNi_2As_2$. Both the suppression in $R(ω)$ and the peaklike feature in $σ_1(ω)$ suggest the progressive formation of a pseudogap feature in the midinfrared range with decreasing temperatures, which might be originated from the dynamic local fluctuation of charge-density-wave (CDW) instability. We propose that the CDW instability in $TlNi_2Se_2$ is driven by the saddle points mechanism, due to the existence of van Hove singularity very close to the Fermi energy.

We present a magneto-infrared spectroscopy study on a newly identified three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetal ZrTe$_5$. We observe clear transitions between Landau levels and their further splitting under magnetic field. Both the sequence of transitions and their field dependence follow quantitatively the relation expected for 3D \emph{massless} Dirac fermions. The measurement also reveals an exceptionally low magnetic field needed to drive the compound into its quantum limit, demonstrating that ZrTe$_5$ is an extremely clean system and ideal platform for studying 3D Dirac fermions. The splitting of the Landau levels provides a direct and bulk spectroscopic evidence that a relatively weak magnetic field can produce a sizeable Zeeman effect on the 3D Dirac fermions, which lifts the spin degeneracy of Landau levels. Our analysis indicates that the compound evolves from a Dirac semimetal into a topological line-node semimetal under current magnetic field configuration.

Three dimensional (3D) topological Dirac materials are under intensive study recently. The layered compound ZrTe$_5$ has been suggested to be one of them by transport and ARPES experiments. Here, we perform infrared reflectivity measurement to investigate the underlying physics of this material. The derived optical conductivity exhibits linear increasing with frequency below normal interband transitions, which provides the first optical spectroscopic proof of a 3D Dirac semimetal. Apart from that, the plasma edge shifts dramatically to lower energy upon temperature cooling, which might be associated with the consequence of lattice parameter shrinking. In addition, an extremely sharp peak shows up in the frequency dependent optical conductivity, indicating the presence of a Van Hove singularity in the joint density of state.

RuP single crystals of MnP-type orthorhombic structure were synthesized by the Sn flux method. Temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction measurements reveal that the compound experiences two structural phase transitions, which are further confirmed by enormous anomalies shown in temperature-dependent resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. Particularly, the resistivity drops monotonically upon temperature cooling below the second transition, indicating that the material shows metallic behavior, in sharp contrast with the insulating ground state of polycrystalline samples. Optical conductivity measurements were also performed in order to unravel the mechanism of these two transitions. The measurement revealed a sudden reconstruction of band structure over a broad energy scale and a significant removal of conducting carriers below the first phase transition, while a charge-density-wave-like energy gap opens below the second phase transition.

X-ray diffraction measurement shows that it crystallizes in the quasi-skutterudite-type caged structure with a cubic space group of Pm-3n (No. 223). Magnetic measurements reveal almost fully localized Yb f-moments above 120 K. The resistivity exhibits a crossover from metallic to insulating behavior with a logarithmic increase below ~ 40 K. The specific heat coefficient shows a rapid upturn below ~5 K and exceeds 2 J mol-1 K-2 at 2 K. Our experimental analysis and electronic band structure calculations demonstrate that Yb3Os4Ge13 exhibits the Kondo effect due to strong hybridization of the localized Yb f-moments with the p-electrons of the surrounding Ge-cages.

We performed an optical spectroscopy measurement on single crystals of $\mathrm{Ba_2Ti_2Fe_2As_4O}$, which is a newly discovered superconductor showing a coexistence of superconductivity and density wave order. The study reveals a spectral change related to the formation density wave energy gap below $T_{DW}\approx$125 K, leading to the removal of about half of the multiple Fermi surface sheets. The ratio of 2$Δ_{DW}$/$k_B T_{DW}\approx$ 11.9 is considerably larger than the mean-field value based on the weak-coupling BCS theory. At the lowest temperature in the superconducting state, we observed opening of superconducting energy gaps $Δ_1(0) =3.4$ meV and $Δ_2(0)=7.9$ meV. The properties of superconducting state in $\mathrm{Ba_2Ti_2Fe_2As_4O}$ are similar to that in $\mathrm{BaFe_{1.85}Co_{0.15}As_2}$.

We present an optical spectroscopy study on P-doped CaFe$_2$As$_2$ which experiences a structural phase transition from tetragonal to collapsed tetragonal (cT) phase near 75 K. The measurement reveals a sudden reduction of low frequency spectral weight and emergence of a new feature near 3200 \cm (0.4 eV) in optical conductivity across the transition, indicating an abrupt reconstruction of band structure. The appearance of new feature is related to the interband transition arising from the sinking of hole bands near $Γ$ point below Fermi level in the cT phase, as expected from the density function theory calculations in combination with the dynamical mean field theory. However, the reduction of Drude spectral weight is at variance with those calculations. The measurement also indicates an absence of the abnormal spectral weight transfer at high energy (near 0.5-0.7 eV) in the cT phase, suggesting a suppression of electron correlation effect.

The occurrences of collective quantum states, such as superconductivity (SC) and charge- or spin-densitywaves (CDWs or SDWs), are among the most fascinating phenomena in solids. To date much effort has been made to explore the interplay between different orders, yet little is known about the relationship of multiple orders of the same type. Here we report optical spectroscopy study on CDWs in the rare-earth tri-telluride compounds RTe3 (R = rare earth elements). Besides the prior reported two CDW orders, the study reveals unexpectedly the presence of a third CDW order in the series which evolves systematically with the size of R element. With increased chemical pressure, the first and third CDW orders are both substantially suppressed and compete with the second one by depleting the low energy spectral weight. A complete phase diagram for the multiple CDW orders in this series is established.

We performed optical spectroscopy measurements across the structural phase transition on single crystal sample of Sr3Ir4Sn13. The optical spectroscopy study reveals an unusual temperature induced spectral weight transfer over broad energy scale, yielding evidence for the presence of electron correlation effect. Below the structural phase transition temperature an energy gap-like suppression in optical conductivity was observed, leading to the removal of partial itinerant carriers near Fermi level. Unexpectedly, the suppression appears at much higher energy scale than that expected for a usual charge density wave phase transition.

We present an optical spectroscopy study on F-substituted NdOBiS$_2$ superconducting single crystals grown using KCl/LiCl flux method. The measurement reveals a simple metallic response with a relatively low screened plasma edge near 5000 \cm. The plasma frequency is estimated to be 2.1 eV, which is much smaller than the value expected from the first-principles calculations for an electron doping level of x=0.5, but very close to the value based on a doping level of 7$\%$ of itinerant electrons per Bi site as determined by ARPES experiment. The energy scales of the interband transitions are also well reproduced by the first-principles calculations. The results suggest an absence of correlation effect in the compound, which essentially rules out the exotic pairing mechanism for superconductivity or scenario based on the strong electronic correlation effect. The study also reveals that the system is far from a CDW instability as being widely discussed for a doping level of x=0.5.

The low-energy spectrum consists of a weakly-dispersing broad hump and a dispersive branch, which follows well the calculated band dispersion. This hump is drastically suppressed with increasing temperature, while the dispersive branch is essentially unaffected. The anomalous thermal effect indicates a highly interacting electronic state, in which the superconducting pairing develops.
