Abstract:
The system Ag[Li$_{1/3}$Mn$_{2/3}$]O$_{2}$ belongs to a quaternary 3R-delafossite family and crystallizes in a monoclinic symmetry with space group $C\,2/m$ and the magnetic Mn$^{4+}$($S=3/2$) ions form a honeycomb network in the $ab$-plane. An anomaly around 50 K and the presence of antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling (Curie-Weiss temperature $θ_{CW}\sim-51$ K) were inferred from our magnetic suscep…

An anomaly around 50 K and the presence of antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling (Curie-Weiss temperature $θ_{CW}\sim-51$ K) were inferred from our magnetic susceptibility data. The magnetic specific heat clearly manifests the onset of magnetic ordering in the vicinity of 48\,K and the recovered magnetic entropy, above the ordering temperature, falls short of the expected value, implying the presence of short-range magnetic correlations. The (ESR) line broadening on approaching the ordering temperature $T_{\rm N}$ could be described in terms of a Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) scenario with $T_{\rm KT}=40(1)$ K. $^{7}$Li NMR line-shift probed as a function of temperature tracks the static susceptibility (K$_{iso}$) of magnetically coupled Mn$^{4+}$ ions. The $^{7}$Li spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/$T$$_{1}$) exhibits a sharp decrease below about 50 K. Combining our bulk and local probe measurements, we establish the presence of an ordered ground state for the honeycomb system Ag$_{3}$LiMn$_{2}$O$_{6}$.Our ab-initio electronic structure calculations suggest that in the $ab$-plane, the nearest neighbor (NN) exchange interaction is strong and AFM, while the next NN and the third NN exchange interactions are FM and AFM respectively. In the absence of any frustration the system is expected to exhibit long-range, AFM order, in agreement with experiment.

We report results of a magnetic characterization of [Cu$_{30}$Ni$_{70}$(6nm)]$_{20}$ (x=1-7nm) superlattices using Polarized Neutron Reflectometry (PNR) and SQUID magnetometry. The study has shown that the magnetic moment of the structures growths almost linearly from H = 0 to H$_{sat}$ = 1.3kOe which is an indirect evidence of antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling of the magnetic moments in neighbouring layers. PNR, however, did not detect any in-plane AF coupling. Taking into account the out-of-plane easy axis of the Cu$_{30}$Ni$_{70}$ layers, this may mean that only the out-of-plane component of the magnetic moments are AF coupled.

We studied the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) like state establishing due to the proximity effect in superconducting Nb/Cu41Ni59 bilayers. Using a special wedge-type deposition technique, series of 20-35 samples could be fabricated by magnetron sputtering during one run. The layer thickness of only a few nanometers, the composition of the alloy, and the quality of interfaces were controlled by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, and Auger spectroscopy. The magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic alloy layer were characterized with superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry. These studies yield precise information about the thickness, and demonstrate the homogeneity of the alloy composition and magnetic properties along the sample series. The dependencies of the critical temperature on the Nb and Cu41Ni59 layer thickness, Tc(dS) and Tc(dF), were investigated for constant thickness dF of the magnetic alloy layer and dS of the superconducting layer, respectively. All types of non-monotonic behaviors of Tc versus dF predicted by the theory could be realized experimentally: from reentrant superconducting behavior with a broad extinction region to a slight suppression of superconductivity with a shallow minimum. Even a double extinction of superconductivity was observed, giving evidence for the multiple reentrant behavior predicted by theory. All critical temperature curves were fitted with suitable sets of parameters. Then, Tc(dF) diagrams of a hypothetical F/S/F spin-switch core structure were calculated using these parameters. Finally, superconducting spin-switch fabrication issues are discussed in detail in view of the achieved results.

We report on x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, electron- spin resonance and heat- capacity studies of Co[Al_1-xCo_x]_2O_4 for Co concentrations 0<x<1. In this spinel system only the A-site Co^2+ cation is magnetic, while the non-magnetic B-site Al^3+ is substituted by the low-spin non-magnetic Co^3+, and it is possible to investigate the complete phase diagram from Co^2+Al^3+_2O_4 to Co^2+Co^3+_2O_4. All samples reveal large negative Curie-Weiss temperatures Theta_CW of the order of -110 K independent of concentration, which is attributed to a high multiplicity of the superexchange interactions between the A-site Co^2+ cations. A pure antiferromagnetic state is found for x = 1.0 and 0.9 with Neel temperatures T_N = 29.5 K and 21.2 K, respectively, as evidenced by lambda-like anomalies in the specific heat. Compositions with 0.3<x<0.75 show smeared out strongly reduced magnetic ordering temperatures. At low temperatures, a T^2.5 dependence of the specific heat is indicative of a spin-liquid state. For x < 0.2 a T^2 dependence of the specific heat and a spin-glass like behavior of the susceptibility below T_f = 4.7 K are observed. The high value of the frustration parameter f = |Theta_CW|/T_f > 10 indicates the presence of strong spin frustration at least for x < 0.6. The frustration mechanism is attributed to competing nearest neighbor and next-nearest neighbor superexchange interactions between the A-site Co^2+ ions.

This compound is isotyp to the ferromagnetic systems RECu${}_9$Sn${}_4$ (RE = Ce, Pr, Nd) with Curie temperatures $T{}\rm_C$ = 5.5 K, 10.5 K and 15 K, respectively. UCu${}_9$Sn${}_4$ exhibits an uncommon magnetic behavior resulting in three different electronic phase transitions. Below 105 K the sample undergoes a valence transition accompanied by an entropy change of 0.5 Rln2. At 32 K a small hump in the specific heat and a flattening out in the susceptibility curve probably indicate the onset of helical spin order. To lower temperatures a second transition to antiferromagnetic ordering occurs which develops a small ferromagnetic contribution on lowering the temperature further. These results are strongly hinting for canted antiferromagnetism in UCu${}_9$Sn${}_4$.

Crystal structure, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat were measured in the normal cubic spinel compounds MnSc_2S_4 and FeSc_2S_4. Down to the lowest temperatures, both compounds remain cubic and reveal strong magnetic frustration. Specifically the Fe compound is characterized by a Curie-Weiss temperature Θ_{CW}= -45 K and does not show any indications of order down to 50 mK. In addition, the Jahn-Teller ion Fe^{2+} is orbitally frustrated. Hence, FeSc_2S_4 belongs to the rare class of spin-orbital liquids. MnSc_2S_4 is a spin liquid for temperatures T > T_N \approx 2 K.
