BPClip is an ultra-low-cost cuffless blood pressure monitor. As a universal smartphone attachment, BPClip leverages the computational imaging power of smartphones to perform oscillometry based blood pressure measurements. This paper examines different design considerations in BPClip's development. The cost and accuracy of blood pressure measurements are the central design goals. Both of these requirements are achieved with the initial prototype that achieves a $0.80 USD material cost and a mean absolute error of 8.72 and 5.49 mmHg for systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respectively. Since a main motivator to develop BPClip is making blood pressure monitoring more accessible, usability is also central to the design. User studies were conducted throughout the design process to inform the most intuitive and accessible design features. In this paper, we demystify the design process to share effective design practices with future developers working towards expanding health monitoring access beyond traditional clinical settings.

Privacy protection has become an increasingly pressing requirement in distributed optimization. However, equipping distributed optimization with differential privacy, the state-of-the-art privacy protection mechanism, will unavoidably compromise optimization accuracy. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to achieve rigorous $ε$-differential privacy in gradient-tracking based distributed optimization with enhanced optimization accuracy. More specifically, to suppress the influence of differential-privacy noise, we propose a new robust gradient-tracking based distributed optimization algorithm that allows both stepsize and the variance of injected noise to vary with time. Then, we establish a new analyzing approach that can characterize the convergence of the gradient-tracking based algorithm under both constant and time-varying stespsizes. To our knowledge, this is the first analyzing framework that can treat gradient-tracking based distributed optimization under both constant and time-varying stepsizes in a unified manner. More importantly, the new analyzing approach gives a much less conservative analytical bound on the stepsize compared with existing proof techniques for gradient-tracking based distributed optimization. We also theoretically characterize the influence of differential-privacy design on the accuracy of distributed optimization, which reveals that inter-agent interaction has a significant impact on the final optimization accuracy. Numerical simulation results confirm the theoretical predictions.

The detection of abnormal fetal heartbeats during pregnancy is important for monitoring the health conditions of the fetus. While adult ECG has made several advances in modern medicine, noninvasive fetal electrocardiography (FECG) remains a great challenge. In this paper, we introduce a new method based on affine combinations of adaptive filters to extract FECG signals. The affine combination of multiple filters is able to precisely fit the reference signal, and thus obtain more accurate FECGs. We proposed a method to combine the Least Mean Square (LMS) and Recursive Least Squares (RLS) filters. Our approach found that the Combined Recursive Least Squares (CRLS) filter achieves the best performance among all proposed combinations. In addition, we found that CRLS is more advantageous in extracting FECG from abdominal electrocardiograms (AECG) with a small signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Compared with the state-of-the-art MSF-ANC method, CRLS shows improved performance. The sensitivity, accuracy, and F1 scores improved by 3.58%, 2.39%, and 1.36%, respectively.

Optical sectioning technology has been widely used in various fluorescence microscopes owing to its background removing capability. Here, a virtual HiLo based on edge detection (V-HiLo-ED) is proposed to achieve wide-field optical sectioning, which requires only single wide-field image. Compared with conventional optical sectioning technologies, its imaging speed can be increased by at least twice, meanwhile maintaining nice optical sectioning performance, low cost, and excellent artifact suppression capabilities. Furthermore, the new V-HiLo-ED can also be extended to other non-fluorescence imaging fields. This simple, cost-effective and easy-to-extend method will benefit many research and application fields that needs to remove out-of-focus blurred images.

Microwave phased array antennas (PAAs) are very attractive to defense applications and high-speed wireless communications for their abilities of fast beam scanning and complex beam pattern control. However, traditional PAAs based on phase shifters suffer from the beam-squint problem and have limited bandwidths. True-time-delay (TTD) beamforming based on low-loss photonic delay lines can solve this problem. But it is still quite challenging to build large-scale photonic TTD beamformers due to their high hardware complexity. In this paper, we demonstrate a photonic TTD beamforming network based on a miniature microresonator frequency comb (microcomb) source and dispersive time delay. A method incorporating optical phase modulation and programmable spectral shaping is proposed for positive and negative apodization weighting to achieve arbitrary microwave beam pattern control. The experimentally demonstrated TTD beamforming network can support a PAA with 21 elements. The microwave frequency range is $\mathbf{8\sim20\ {GHz}}$, and the beam scanning range is $\mathbf{\pm 60.2^\circ}$. Detailed measurements of the microwave amplitudes and phases are performed. The beamforming performances of Gaussian, rectangular beams and beam notch steering are evaluated through simulations by assuming a uniform radiating antenna array. The scheme can potentially support larger PAAs with hundreds of elements by increasing the number of comb lines with broadband microcomb generation.
