This paper describes a modular framework for the description of electroweak scattering and decay processes, including but not limited to Z-resonance physics. The framework consistently combines a complex-pole expansion near a s-channel resonance with a regular fixed-order perturbative description away from the resonance, in a manifestly gauge-invariant scheme. Leading vertex correction contributions are encapsulated in form factors that can be predicted or treated as numerical fit parameters.
This framework has been implemented in the publicly available object-oriented C++ library GRIFFIN. Version 1.0 of this library provides Standard Model predictions for the process $f\bar{f} \to f'\bar{f}'$ with full NNLO and leading higher-order contributions on the Z-resonance, and with NLO corrections off resonance. The library can straightforwardly be extended to include higher-order corrections, should they become available, or predictions for new physics models. It can be interfaced with Monte-Carlo programs to account for QED and QCD initial-state and final-state radiation.

We calculate the quarkonic $O(α_s^2)$ massive operator matrix elements $ΔA_{Qg}(N), ΔA_{Qq}^{\rm PS}(N)$ and $ΔA_{qq,Q}^{\rm NS}(N)$ for the twist--2 operators and the associated heavy flavor Wilson coefficients in polarized deeply inelastic scattering in the region $Q^2 \gg m^2$ to $O(\varepsilon)$ in the case of the inclusive heavy flavor contributions. The evaluation is performed in Mellin space, without applying the integration-by-parts method. The result is given in terms of harmonic sums. This leads to a significant compactification of the operator matrix elements and massive Wilson coefficients in the region $Q^2 \gg m^2$ derived previously in \cite{BUZA2}, which we partly confirm, and also partly correct. The results allow to determine the heavy flavor Wilson coefficients for $g_1(x,Q^2)$ to $O(α_s^2)$ for all but the power suppressed terms $\propto (m^2/Q^2)^k, k \geq 1$. The results in momentum fraction $z$-space are also presented. We also discuss the small $x$ effects in the polarized case. Numerical results are presented. We also compute the gluonic matching coefficients in the two--mass variable flavor number scheme to $O(\varepsilon)$.

We calculate the gluonic massive operator matrix elements in the unpolarized and polarized cases, $A_{gg,Q}(x,μ^2)$ and $ΔA_{gg,Q}(x,μ^2)$, at three-loop order for a single mass. These quantities contribute to the matching of the gluon distribution in the variable flavor number scheme. The polarized operator matrix element is calculated in the Larin scheme. These operator matrix elements contain finite binomial and inverse binomial sums in Mellin $N$-space and iterated integrals over square root-valued alphabets in momentum fraction $x$-space. We derive the necessary analytic relations for the analytic continuation of these quantities from the even or odd Mellin moments into the complex plane, present analytic expressions in momentum fraction $x$-space and derive numerical results. The present results complete the gluon transition matrix elements both of the single- and double-mass variable flavor number scheme to three-loop order.

The precise measurement of physics observables and the test of their consistency within the standard model (SM) are an invaluable approach, complemented by direct searches for new particles, to determine the existence of physics beyond the standard model (BSM). Studies of massive electroweak gauge bosons (W and Z bosons) are a promising target for indirect BSM searches, since the interactions of photons and gluons are strongly constrained by the unbroken gauge symmetries. They can be divided into two categories: (a) Fermion scattering processes mediated by s- or t-channel W/Z bosons, also known as electroweak precision measurements; and (b) multi-boson processes, which include production of two or more vector bosons in fermion-antifermion annihilation, as well as vector boson scattering (VBS) processes. The latter categories can test modifications of gauge-boson self-interactions, and the sensitivity is typically improved with increased collision energy.
This report evaluates the achievable precision of a range of future experiments, which depend on the statistics of the collected data sample, the experimental and theoretical systematic uncertainties, and their correlations. In addition it presents a combined interpretation of these results, together with similar studies in the Higgs and top sector, in the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) framework. This framework provides a model-independent prescription to put generic constraints on new physics and to study and combine large sets of experimental observables, assuming that the new physics scales are significantly higher than the EW scale.

These corrections are important ingredients for the matching relations in the variable flavor number scheme and for the calculation of Wilson coefficients in deep--inelastic scattering in the asymptotic regime $Q^2 \gg m_c^2, m_b^2$. The analytic result is expressed in terms of nested harmonic, generalized harmonic, cyclotomic and binomial sums in $N$-space and by iterated integrals involving square-root valued arguments in $z$ space, as functions of the mass ratio. At $e^+ \, e^-$ colliders the QED--initial state radiation forms a large part of the radiative corrections. Their precise and fast evaluation is an essential asset for the experiments at LEP, the ILC and the FCC-ee, operating at high luminosity. A long standing problem in the analytic calculation of the $O(α^2)$ initial state corrections concerns a discrepancy which has been observed between the result of Berends et al. (1988) \cite{Berends:1987ab} in the limit $m_e^2 \ll s$ and the result by Bl{ü}mlein et al. (2011) \cite{Blumlein:2011mi} using massive operator matrix elements deriving this limit directly. In order to resolve this important issue we recalculated this process by integrating directly over the phase space without any approximation. For parts of the corrections we find exact solutions of the cross section in terms of iterated integrals over square root valued letters representing incomplete elliptic integrals and iterations over them. The expansion in the limit $m_e^2 \ll s$ reveals errors in the constant $O(α^2)$ term of the former calculation and yields agreement with the calculation based on massive operator matrix elements, which has impact on the experimental analysis programs. This finding also explicitly proofs the factorization of massive initial state particles in the high energy limit including the terms of $O(α^2)$ for this process.

We observe differences to an earlier result \cite{Berends:1987ab} in the non-logarithmic contributions at $O(α^2)$. The new result leads to a 4 MeV shift in the $Z$ width considering the lower end $s_0 = 4 m_τ^2$ of the radiation region, which is larger than the present accuracy. We present predictions on the radiative corrections to the central processes $e^+e^- \rightarrow γ^*/Z^*$, $e^+e^- \rightarrow Z H$ and $e^+e^- \rightarrow t \overline{t}$ planned at future colliders like the ILC, CLIC, Fcc\_ee and CEPC to measure the mass and the width of the $Z$ boson, the Higgs boson and the top quark, for which the present corrections are significant.

Due to the high anticipated experimental precision at the Future Circular Collider FCC-ee (or other proposed $e^+e^-$ colliders, such as ILC, CLIC, or CEPC) for electroweak and Higgs-boson precision measurements, theoretical uncertainties may have, if unattended, an important impact on the interpretation of these measurements within the Standard Model (SM), and thus on constraints on new physics. Current theory uncertainties, which would dominate the total uncertainty, need to be strongly reduced through future advances in the calculation of multi-loop radiative corrections together with improved experimental and theoretical control of the precision of SM input parameters. This document aims to provide an estimate of the required improvement in calculational accuracy in view of the anticipated high precision at the FCC-ee. The correction is represented in terms of iterated incomplete elliptic integrals. Performing the limit $s \gg m_e^2$ we find discrepancies with the earlier results of Ref.~\cite{Berends:1987ab} and confirm results obtained in Ref.~\cite{Blumlein:2011mi} where the effective method of massive operator matrix elements has been used, which works for all but the power corrections in $m^2/s$. In this way, we also confirm the validity of the factorization of massive partons in the Drell-Yan process. We also add non-logarithmic terms at $O(α^2)$ which have not been considered in \cite{Berends:1987ab}. The corrections are of central importance for precision analyzes in $e^+e^-$ annihilation into $γ^*/Z^*$ at high luminosity.

The specific construction explored in this work features a Dirac fermion dark matter candidate interacting with a light scalar mediator that dominantly couples to the up-quark. The correct freeze-out relic abundance may be achieved via dark matter annihilation directly to hadrons or through secluded annihilation to scalar mediators. A rich and distinctive phenomenology is present in this scenario, with probes arising from precision meson decays, proton beam dump experiments, colliders, direct detection experiments, supernovae, and nucleosynthesis. The Mellin inversion of these quantities to $z$-space gives rise to generalized iterated integrals with square root valued letters in the alphabet, depending on the mass ratio as well. Numerical results are presented.

New singlet scalar bosons have broad phenomenological utility and feature prominently in many extensions of the Standard Model. Such scalars are often taken to have Higgs-like couplings to SM fermions in order to evade stringent flavor bounds, e.g. by assuming Minimal Flavor Violation (MFV), which leads to a rather characteristic phenomenology. Here we describe an alternative approach, based on an effective field theory framework for a new scalar that dominantly couples to one specific SM fermion mass eigenstate. A simple flavor hypothesis ensures adequate suppression of new flavor changing neutral currents. We consider radiatively generated flavor changing neutral currents and scalar potential terms in such theories, demonstrating that they are often suppressed by small Yukawa couplings, and also describe the role of $CP$ symmetry. We further demonstrate that such scalars can have masses that are significantly below the electroweak scale while still being natural, provided they are sufficiently weakly coupled to ordinary matter. In comparison to other flavor scenarios, our framework is rather versatile since a single (or a few) desired scalar couplings may be investigated in isolation. We illustrate this by discussing in detail the examples of an up-specific scalar mediator to dark matter and a muon-specific scalar that may address the $\sim 3 σ$ muon anomalous magnetic moment discrepancy.

We present the results for the non-singlet and $A_{gq,Q}$ OMEs, and compare the size of their contribution relative to the single mass case. Results for the gluonic OME $A_{gg,Q}$ are given in the physical case, going beyond those presented in a previous publication where scalar diagrams were computed. We also discuss our recently published two--mass contribution to the pure singlet OME, and present an alternative method of calculating the corresponding diagrams.

We present the results for heavy quark form factors at two-loop order in perturbative QCD for different currents, namely vector, axial-vector, scalar and pseudo-scalar currents, up to second order in the dimensional regularization parameter. This paper describes the calculation of the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to massive color-octet vector boson pair production at hadron colliders. As a concrete framework, a two-site coloron model with an internal parity is chosen, which can be regarded as an effective low-energy approximation of Kaluza-Klein gluon physics in universal extra dimensions. The renormalization procedure involves several subtleties, which are discussed in detail. The impact of the NLO corrections is relatively modest, amounting to a reduction of 11-14% in the total cross-section, but they significantly reduce the scale dependence of the LO result.

Starting at 3-loop order, the massive Wilson coefficients for deep-inelastic scattering and the massive operator matrix elements describing the variable flavor number scheme receive contributions of Feynman diagrams carrying quark lines with two different masses. In the case of the charm and bottom quarks, the usual decoupling of one heavy mass at a time no longer holds, since the ratio of the respective masses, $η= m_c^2/m_b^2 \sim 1/10$, is not small enough. Therefore, the usual variable flavor number scheme (VFNS) has to be generalized. The renormalization procedure in the two--mass case is different from the single mass case derived in \cite{Bierenbaum:2009mv}. We present the moments $N=2,4$ and $6$ for all contributing operator matrix elements, expanding in the ratio $η$. We calculate the analytic results for general values of the Mellin variable $N$ in the flavor non-singlet case, as well as for transversity and the matrix element $A_{gq}^{(3)}$. We also calculate the two-mass scalar integrals of all topologies contributing to the gluonic operator matrix element $A_{gg}$. As it turns out, the expansion in $η$ is usually inapplicable for general values of $N$. We therefore derive the result for general values of the mass ratio. From the single pole terms we derive, now in a two-mass calculation, the corresponding contributions to the 3-loop anomalous dimensions. We introduce a new general class of iterated integrals and study their relations and present special values. The corresponding functions are implemented in computer-algebraic form.

The main goal of the working group was to present the state-of-the-art of Higgs physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first part compiles the most up-to-date predictions of Higgs boson production cross sections and decay branching ratios, parton distribution functions, and off-shell Higgs boson production and interference effects. The second part discusses the recent progress in Higgs effective field theory predictions, followed by the third part on pseudo-observables, simplified template cross section and fiducial cross section measurements, which give the baseline framework for Higgs boson property measurements. The fourth part deals with the beyond the Standard Model predictions of various benchmark scenarios of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, extended scalar sector, Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and exotic Higgs boson decays. This report follows three previous working-group reports: Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002), Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002), and Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 3. Higgs properties (CERN-2013-004). The current report serves as the baseline reference for Higgs physics in LHC Run 2 and beyond.

Numerical results are presented. We illustrate the transition from low to large virtualities for these observables, which may be contrasted to basic assumptions made in the so-called variable flavor number scheme. We also derive the corresponding results for the Adler sum rule, the unpolarized and polarized Bjorken sum rules and the Gross-Llewellyn Smith sum rule. There are no logarithmic corrections at large scales $Q^2$ and the effects of the power corrections due to the heavy quark mass are of the size of the known $O(α_s^4)$ corrections in the case of the sum rules. The complete charm and bottom corrections are compared to the approach using asymptotic representations in the region $Q^2 \gg m_{c,b}^2$. We also study the target mass corrections to the above sum rules.

However, models of this kind necessarily generate effective four-lepton contact interactions at the tree- or one-loop-level, which can be probed in $e^+e^-$ collisions. In this work, precise data from LEP is used to derive limits on leptophilic dark matter in a model-independent framework. The bounds turn out to be competitive with, and in some cases exceed, limits from mono-photon events. We also extrapolate our results to ILC energies and luminosities. We show that ILC data for contact interactions may be able to set the strongest limits on TeV-scale leptophilic dark matter for couplings $g\gtrsim 1$ of the mediators.

The long-standing difference between the experimental measurement and the standard-model prediction for the muon's anomalous magnetic moment, $a_μ = (g_μ-2)/2$, may be explained by the presence of new weakly interacting particles with masses of a few 100 GeV. Particles of this kind can generally be directly produced at the LHC, and thus they may already be constrained by existing data. In this work, we investigate this connection between $a_μ$ and the LHC in a model-independent approach, by introducing one or two new fields beyond the standard model with spin and weak isospin up to one. For each case, we identify the preferred parameter space for explaining the discrepancy of a_mu and derive bounds using data from LEP and the 8-TeV LHC run. Furthermore, we estimate how these limits could be improved with the 14-TeV LHC. We find that the 8-TeV results already rule out a subset of our simplified models, while almost all viable scenarios can be tested conclusively with 14-TeV data.

Perhaps the most important question in particle physics today is whether the boson with mass near 125 GeV discovered at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the Higgs Boson of the Standard Model. Since a particularly important property of the Standard Model Higgs is its role in unitarizing longitudinal WW scattering, we study the ability of the LHC to probe this process in the case of same-sign W pair production. We find that the use of the Matrix Element Method increases the significance with which the Higgs sector can be probed in this channel. In particular, it allows one to distinguish between a light and heavy SM Higgs in this channel alone with a high degree of significance, as well as to set important limits in the parameter space of the Two Higgs Doublet Model and the Strongly-Interacting Light Higgs Model with less than 200/fb at the 14-TeV LHC, thus providing crucial information about the putative Higgs boson's role in electroweak symmetry breaking.

In this paper, we constrain CP violation in the Higgs sector using the measured signal strengths in the various Higgs search channels. To this end, we introduce a general parameterization for a resonance which is an admixture of a CP-even Higgs-like state and a CP-odd scalar. By performing a fit to the available data from the Tevatron and LHC experiments one obtains constraints on the mixing angle and the couplings of the resonance to Standard Model fields. Depending on the couplings, sizable mixing angles are still compatible with the data, but small mixing is in general preferred by the fit. In particular we find that a pure CP-odd state is disfavored by the current data at the 3 sigma level. Additionally we consider a mixed fermiophobic resonance and a model with two degenerate mixed resonances and find that both scenarios can successfully fit the data within current errors. Finally, we estimate that the mixing angle can be constrained to α< 1.1 (0.7) in the full 8 TeV (14 TeV) run of the LHC.

The basic structure of top-quarks as spin-1/2 particles is characterized by the radius $R_t$ and the intrinsic magnetic dipole moment $κ_t$, both individually associated with gauge interactions. They are predicted to be zero in pointlike theories as the Standard Model. We derive upper limits of these parameters in the color sector from cross sections measured at Tevatron and LHC in top-pair production $p{\bar{p}}/pp \to t{\bar{t}}$, and we predict improved limits expected from LHC in the future, especially for analyses exploiting boosted top final states. An additional method for measuring the intrinsic parameters is based on $t \bar{t} + jet$ final states.

A model-independent analysis of decays of the form C -> l+ l- A (l=e,mu) is presented, including the possibility that this three-body decay is preceded by an additional decay step D -> j C. Here A, C and D are heavy new-physics particles and j stands for a quark jet. It is assumed that A escapes direct detection in a collider experiment, so that one cannot kinematically reconstruct the momenta of the new particles. Instead, information about their properties can be obtained from invariant-mass distributions of the visible decay products, i.e. the di-lepton (ll) and jet-lepton (jl) invariant-mass distributions. All possible spin configurations and renormalizable couplings of the new particles are considered, and explicit expressions for the invariant-mass distributions are derived, in a formulation that separates the coupling parameters from the spin and kinematic information. In a numerical analysis, it is shown how these properties can be determined independently from a fit to the m(ll) and m(jl) distributions.

Detectors at a high-energy muon collider must be protected from the decay products of beam muons by installing shielding material around the beam pipe. In this article, the impact of these blind detector regions on new-physics signatures with invisible final-state particles is shown by studying the production of sleptons, the superpartners of leptons. Special attention is given to large backgrounds from two-photon collisions. It is demonstrated how the influence of these backgrounds can be controlled by implementing suitable cuts or running at two different center-of-mass energies, thus permitting precision measurements of the mass and spin of the sleptons. However, these methods become ineffective for small mass differences between the sleptons and their decay products, and it will be difficult to analyze the slepton signal at a muon collider in this case.

This document proposes a collection of simplified models relevant to the design of new-physics searches at the LHC and the characterization of their results. Both ATLAS and CMS have already presented some results in terms of simplified models, and we encourage them to continue and expand this effort, which supplements both signature-based results and benchmark model interpretations. A simplified model is defined by an effective Lagrangian describing the interactions of a small number of new particles. Simplified models can equally well be described by a small number of masses and cross-sections. These parameters are directly related to collider physics observables, making simplified models a particularly effective framework for evaluating searches and a useful starting point for characterizing positive signals of new physics. This document serves as an official summary of the results from the "Topologies for Early LHC Searches" workshop, held at SLAC in September of 2010, the purpose of which was to develop a set of representative models that can be used to cover all relevant phase space in experimental searches. Particular emphasis is placed on searches relevant for the first ~50-500 pb-1 of data and those motivated by supersymmetric models. This note largely summarizes material posted at http://lhcnewphysics.org/, which includes simplified model definitions, Monte Carlo material, and supporting contacts within the theory community. We also comment on future developments that may be useful as more data is gathered and analyzed by the experiments.
