Abstract:
We report results from a study of hadronic transitions of the $χ_{bJ}(nP)$ states of bottomonium at Belle. The $P$-wave states are reconstructed in transitions to the $Υ(1S)$ with the emission of an $ω$ meson. The $P$-wave states are reconstructed in transitions to the $Υ(1S)$ with the emission of an $ω$ meson. The transitions of the $n=2$ triplet states provide a unique laboratory in which to study nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics, as the kinematic threshold for production of an $ω$ and $Υ(1S)$ lies between the $J=0$ and $J=1$ states. A search for the $χ_{bJ}(3P)$ states is also reported.

In the Standard Model (SM) charmless hadronic decays $B_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η$ proceed via tree-level $b\to u$ and penguin $b\to s$ transitions. Penguin transitions are sensitive to Beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) physics scenarios and could affect the branching fractions and {\it CP} asymmetries in such decays. Once branching fractions for two-body decays $B_s \to ηη, ηη^{\prime}, η^{\prime}η^{\prime} $ are measured, and the theoretical uncertainties are reduced, it would be possible to extract {\it CP} violating parameters from the data using the formalism based on SU(3)/U(3) symmetry. To achieve this goal, at least four of these six branching fractions need to be measured. Only the branching fraction for $B_s^0 \to η^{\prime}η^{\prime}$ has been measured so far.

The enhancement of charged-particle pairs with large pseudorapidity difference and small azimuthal angle difference, often referred to as the ``ridge signal'', is a phenomenon widely observed in high multiplicity proton-proton, proton-ion and deutron-ion collisions, which is not yet fully understood. In heavy-ion collisions, the hydrodynamic expansion of the Quark-Gluon Plasma is one of the possible explanations of the origin of the ridge signal. Measurements in the $e^+e^-$ collision system, without the complexities introduced by hadron structure in the initial state, can serve as a complementary probe to examine the formation of a ridge signal. The first measurement of two-particle angular correlation functions in high multiplicity $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=10.52$ GeV is reported. The hadronic $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB are used in this study. Two-particle angular correlation functions are measured over the full azimuth and large pseudorapidity intervals which are defined by either the electron beam axis or the event thrust as a function of charged particle multiplicity. The measurement in the event thrust analysis, with mostly outgoing quark pairs determining the reference axis, is sensitive to the region of additional soft gluon emissions. No significant ridge signal is observed with either coordinates analyses. Near side jet correlations appear to be absent in the thrust axis analysis. The measurements are compared to predictions from various event generators and expected to provide new constraints to the phenomenological models in the low energy regime.

The analysis utilizes a method where the tag-side $B$ meson is reconstructed in a semileptonic decay mode, and the signal-side $τ$ is reconstructed in a purely leptonic decay. The measured values are $\mathcal{R}(D)= 0.307 \pm 0.037 \pm 0.016$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^{\ast})= 0.283 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.014$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions within $0.2$ and $1.1$ standard deviations, respectively, while their combination agrees with the Standard Model predictions within $1.2$ standard deviations.

We report the first evidence for isospin violation in $B \to K^* γ$ and the first measurement of difference of $CP$ asymmetries between $B^+ \to K^{*+} γ$ and $B^0 \to K^{*0} γ$. This analysis is based on the data sample containing $772 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs that was collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric $e^+ e^-$ collider. We find evidence for the isospin violation with a significance of 3.1$σ$, $Δ_{0+} = (+6.2 \pm 1.5 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.6 ({\rm syst.}) \pm 1.2 (f_{+-}/f_{00}))$\%, where the third uncertainty is due to the uncertainty on the fraction of $B^+B^-$ to $B^0\bar{B}^0$ production in $Υ(4S)$ decays. The measured value is consistent with predictions of the SM. The result for the difference of $CP$ asymmetries is $ΔA_{CP} = (+2.4 \pm 2.8({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.5({\rm syst.}))$\%, consistent with zero. The measured branching fractions and $CP$ asymmetries for charged and neutral $B$ meson decays are the most precise to date. We also calculate the ratio of branching fractions of $B^0 \to K^{*0} γ$ to $B_s^0 \to φγ$.

A Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is an ideal device for the detection of charged particle tracks in a large volume covering a solid angle of almost $4π$. The high density of hits on a given particle track facilitates the task of pattern recognition in a high-occupancy environment and in addition provides particle identification by measuring the specific energy loss for each track. For these reasons, TPCs with Multiwire Proportional Chamber (MWPC) amplification have been and are widely used in experiments recording heavy-ion collisions. A significant drawback, however, is the large dead time of the order of 1 ms per event generated by the use of a gating grid, which is mandatory to prevent ions created in the amplification region from drifting back into the drift volume, where they would severely distort the drift path of subsequent tracks. For experiments with higher event rates this concept of a conventional TPC operating with a triggered gating grid can therefore not be applied without a significant loss of data. A continuous readout of the signals is the more appropriate way of operation. This, however, constitutes a change of paradigm with considerable challenges to be met concerning the amplification region, the design and bandwidth of the readout electronics, and the data handling. A mandatory prerequisite for such an operation is a sufficiently good suppression of the ion backflow from the avalanche region, which otherwise limits the tracking and particle identification capabilities of such a detector. Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM) are a promising candidate to combine excellent spatial resolution with an intrinsic suppression of ions. In this paper we describe the design, construction and the commissioning of a large TPC with GEM amplification and without gating grid (GEM-TPC).

The precise determination of the CKM matrix element $\left| V_{cb}\right|$ is important for carrying out tests of the flavour sector of the Standard Model. In this article we present a preliminary analysis of the $\bar B^0 \to D^{*\,+} \, \ell^- \, \bar ν_\ell$ decay mode and its charge conjugate, selected in events that contain a fully reconstructed $B$-meson, using 772 million $e^+ \, e^- \to Υ(4S) \to B \bar B$ events recorded by the Belle detector at KEKB. Unfolded differential decay rates of four kinematic variables fully describing the $\bar B^0 \to D^{*\,+} \, \ell^- \, \bar ν_\ell$ decay in the $B$-meson rest frame are presented. We measure the total branching fraction $\mathcal{B}( \bar B^0 \to D^{*\,+} \, \ell^- \, \bar ν_\ell ) = \left(4.95 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.22 \right) \times 10^{-2}$, where the errors are statistical and systematic respectively. The value of $\left|V_{cb} \right|$ is determined to be $\left( 37.4 \pm 1.3 \right) \times 10^{-3}$. Both results are in good agreement with current world averages.

We report the first observation of the polarization of $Λ/\barΛ$ hyperons transverse to its production plane in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. We observe a significant polarization that rises with the fractional energy carried by the hyperon as well as its transverse momentum. To define the production plane, we use the direction of the hyperon momentum together with either the thrust axis in the event or the momentum vector of a hadron in the opposite hemisphere. Furthermore, we investigate the contributions to the hyperon polarization from the feed-down from $Σ^0/\barΣ^0$ and $Λ_c^{\pm}$ decays. This measurement uses a dataset of 800.4fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle experiment at or near a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV.

The large sample allows us to probe the total decay width of the χ_{b0}(1P). In the absence of a statistically significant result, a 90% confidence-level upper limit is set on the width at Γ_{total}< 2.4 MeV. We measure the ratios of branching fractions ${\cal B}(Ξ_{c}(3055)^{+} \to ΛD^{+})/{\cal B}(Ξ_{c}(3055)^{+} \to Σ_{c}^{++}K^{-})=5.09\pm1.01\pm0.76$, ${\cal B}(Ξ_{c}(3080)^{+} \to ΛD^{+})/{\cal B}(Ξ_{c}(3080)^{+} \to Σ_{c}^{++}K^{-})=1.29\pm0.30\pm0.15$, and ${\cal B}(Ξ_{c}(3080)^{+} \to Σ_{c}^{\ast ++}K^{-})/{\cal B}(Ξ_{c}(3080)^{+} \to Σ_{c}^{++}K^{-})=1.07\pm0.27\pm0.01$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic. The analysis is performed using a 980 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider.

One $B$ meson is fully reconstructed in a hadronic mode to determine the momentum of the lepton of the signal decay in the rest frame of the recoiling partner $B$ meson. We find no evidence of a signal and set upper limits on the order of $10^{-6}$.

Four angular observables, $P_{4,5,6,8}'$ are extracted in five bins of the invariant mass squared of the lepton system, $q^2$. We compare our results for $P_{4,5,6,8}'$ with Standard Model predictions including the $q^2$ region in which the LHCb collaboration reported the so-called $P_5'$ anomaly.

We have searched for the decay B0 -> phi gamma using the full Belle data set of 772 x 10^6 BBbar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider. No signal is observed, and we set an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(B0 -> phi gamma) < 1.0 x 10^{-7} at 90% confidence level. This is the most stringent limit on this decay mode to date.

We measure $\mathcal{B}(B \to χ_{c1} X)$= $(3.03 \pm 0.05(\mbox{stat}) \pm 0.24(\mbox{syst})) \times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(B \to χ_{c2} X)$= $(0.70 \pm 0.06(\mbox{stat}) \pm 0.10(\mbox{syst})) \times 10^{-3}$. For the first time, $χ_{c2}$ production in exclusive $B$ decays in the modes $B^0 \to χ_{c2}π^- K^+$ and $B^+ \to χ_{c2} π^+ π^- K^+$ has been observed, along with first evidence for the $B^+ \to χ_{c2} π^+ K_S^0$ decay mode. For $χ_{c1}$ production, we report the first observation in the $B^+ \to χ_{c1} π^+ π^- K^+$, $B^0 \to χ_{c1} π^+ π^- K_S^0$ and $B^0 \to χ_{c1} π^0 π^- K^+$ decay modes. Using these decay modes, we observe a difference in the production mechanism of $χ_{c2}$ in comparison to $χ_{c1}$ in $B$ decays. In addition, we report searches for $X(3872)$ and $χ_{c1}(2P)$ in the $B^+ \to (χ_{c1} π^+ π^-) K^+$ decay mode. The isospin-averaged branching fraction of the decay $B\to D\ellν_\ell$ is found to be $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^- \ell^+ ν_{\ell})=(2.31\pm 0.03(\mathrm{stat})\pm 0.11(\mathrm{syst}))\%$. Analyzing the differential decay rate as a function of the hadronic recoil with the parameterization of Caprini, Lelouch and Neubert and using the form-factor prediction $\mathcal{G}(1)=1.0541\pm 0.0083$ calculated by FNAL/MILC, we obtain $η_\mathrm{EW}|V_{cb}|=(40.12\pm 1.34)\times 10^{-3}$, where $η_\mathrm{EW}$ is the electroweak correction factor. Alternatively, assuming the model-independent form-factor parameterization of Boyd, Grinstein and Lebed and using lattice QCD data from the FNAL/MILC and HPQCD collaborations, we find $η_\mathrm{EW}|V_{cb}|=(41.10 \pm 1.14)\times 10^{-3}$.

No significant signal is observed and an upper limit of $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to π^- τ^+ ν_τ) < 2.5 \times 10^{-4}$ is obtained at the $90\%$ confidence level.

We observe $19.8σ$ and $10.8σ$ excesses of events for the two decay modes and measure the branching fractions of $B^0 \rightarrow p\barΛ D^{-}$ and $B^0 \rightarrow p\barΛ D^{*-}$ to be $(25.1\pm2.6\pm3.5)\times10^{-6}$ and $(33.6\pm6.3\pm4.4)\times10^{-6}$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are not compatible with the predictions based on the generalized factorization approach. In addition, a threshold enhancement in the di-baryon ($p\barΛ$) system is observed, consistent with that observed in similar $B$ decays.

We report a measurement of the differential cross section of $π^0$ pair production in single-tag two-photon collisions, $γ^* γ\to π^0 π^0$, in $e^+ e^-$ scattering. The cross section is measured for $Q^2$ up to 30 GeV$^2$, where $Q^2$ is the negative of the invariant mass squared of the tagged photon, in the kinematic range 0.5 GeV < W < 2.1 GeV and $|\cos θ^*|$ < 1.0 for the total energy and pion…

The transition form factor of the $f_0(980)$ and that of the $f_2(1270)$ with the helicity-0, -1, and -2 components separately are measured for the first time and are compared with theoretical calculations.

GENFIT is an experiment-independent track-fitting toolkit that combines fitting algorithms, track representations, and measurement geometries into a modular framework. We report on a significantly improved version of GENFIT, based on experience gained in the Belle II, PANDA, and FOPI experiments. Improvements concern the implementation of additional track-fitting algorithms, enhanced implementations of Kalman fitters, enhanced visualization capabilities, and additional implementations of measurement types suited for various kinds of tracking detectors. The data model has been revised, allowing for efficient track merging, smoothing, residual calculation, alignment, and storage.

A fundamental limit to the application of Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) in high-rate experiments is the accumulation of slowly drifting ions in the active gas volume, which compromises the homogeneity of the drift field and hence the detector resolution. Conventionally, this problem is overcome by the use of ion-gating structures. This method, however, introduces large dead times and restricts trigger rates to a few hundred per second. The ion gate can be eliminated from the setup by the use of Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) foils for gas amplification, which intrinsically suppress the backflow of ions. This makes the continuous operation of a TPC at high rates feasible.
In this work, Monte Carlo simulations of the buildup of ion space charge in a GEM-based TPC and the correction of the resulting drift distortions are discussed, based on realistic numbers for the ion backflow in a triple-GEM amplification stack. A TPC in the future PANDA experiment at FAIR, in which antiproton-proton interaction rates up to 2 x 10^7 per second will be reached, serves as an example for the experimental environment. The simulations show that space charge densities up to 65 fC per cubic cm are reached, leading to electron drift distortions of up to 10 mm. The application of a laser calibration system to correct these distortions is investigated. Based on full simulations of the detector physics and response, we show that it is possible to correct for the drift distortions and to maintain the good momentum resolution of the GEM-TPC.
