We explore the bound neutrons decay into invisible particles (e.g., $n\rightarrow 3 ν$ or $nn \rightarrow 2 ν$) in the JUNO liquid scintillator detector. The invisible decay includes two decay modes: $ n \rightarrow { inv} $ and $ nn \rightarrow { inv} $. The invisible decays of $s$-shell neutrons in $^{12}{\rm C}$ will leave a highly excited residual nucleus. Subsequently, some de-excitation modes of the excited residual nuclei can produce a time- and space-correlated triple coincidence signal in the JUNO detector. Based on a full Monte Carlo simulation informed with the latest available data, we estimate all backgrounds, including inverse beta decay events of the reactor antineutrino $\barν_e$, natural radioactivity, cosmogenic isotopes and neutral current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos. Pulse shape discrimination and multivariate analysis techniques are employed to further suppress backgrounds. With two years of exposure, JUNO is expected to give an order of magnitude improvement compared to the current best limits. After 10 years of data taking, the JUNO expected sensitivities at a 90% confidence level are $τ/B( n \rightarrow { inv} ) > 5.0 \times 10^{31} \, {\rm yr}$ and $τ/B( nn \rightarrow { inv} ) > 1.4 \times 10^{32} \, {\rm yr}$.

We investigate the role of the electromagnetic interaction in the formation and decay of the $X(3872)$. The binding properties of the $X(3872)$ are studied by assuming the molecular nature and considering the $S$-$D$ wave mixing, isospin breaking, and coupled channel effects, and in particular the correction from the electromagnetic interaction. The radiative decays can better reflect the difference between the charged and neutral $D\bar D^*$ components, since the electromagnetic interaction explicitly breaks the isospin symmetry. We further study the radiative decay widths with the obtained wave functions for different $D\bar D^*$ channels. We also explore other similar hidden-charm molecular states. The electromagnetic interaction can make the molecule tighter. Our result of the radiative decay width for $X(3872)\rightarrow γJ/ψ$ is in agreement with the experiment. The branching ratio $R_{γψ}$ is less than 1 in our framework, which supports the Belle and BESIII measurements.

The core-collapse supernova (CCSN) is considered one of the most energetic astrophysical events in the universe. The early and prompt detection of neutrinos before (pre-SN) and during the supernova (SN) burst presents a unique opportunity for multi-messenger observations of CCSN events. In this study, we describe the monitoring concept and present the sensitivity of the system to pre-SN and SN neutrinos at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector currently under construction in South China. The real-time monitoring system is designed to ensure both prompt alert speed and comprehensive coverage of progenitor stars. It incorporates prompt monitors on the electronic board as well as online monitors at the data acquisition stage. Assuming a false alert rate of 1 per year, this monitoring system exhibits sensitivity to pre-SN neutrinos up to a distance of approximately 1.6 (0.9) kiloparsecs and SN neutrinos up to about 370 (360) kiloparsecs for a progenitor mass of 30 solar masses, considering both normal and inverted mass ordering scenarios. The pointing ability of the CCSN is evaluated by analyzing the accumulated event anisotropy of inverse beta decay interactions from pre-SN or SN neutrinos. This, along with the early alert, can play a crucial role in facilitating follow-up multi-messenger observations of the next galactic or nearby extragalactic CCSN.

We investigate the dynamical properties of low frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed from the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 during the early part of its 2018 outburst, when the system was in a bright hard state. To this aim, we use a series of observations from the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope Insight-HXMT, and apply a wavelet decomposition (weighted wavelet Z-transforms) to the X-ray light-curve. We find that the QPO phenomenon is intermittent within each individual observation, with some sub-intervals where the oscillation is strongly detected (high root-mean-square amplitude) and others where it is weak or absent. The average life time of individual QPO segments is ~ 5 oscillation cycles, with a 3 sigma tail up to ~ 20 cycles. There is no substantial difference between the energy spectra during intervals with strong and weak/absent QPOs. We discuss two possible reasons for the intermittent QPO strength, within the precessing jet model previously proposed for MAXI J1820+070. In the rigid precession model, intermittent QPOs are predicted to occur with a coherence Q ~ a few when the disk alignment time-scale is only a few times the precession time-scale. Alternatively, we suggest that changes in oscillation amplitude can be caused by changes in the jet speed. We discuss a possible reason for the intermittent QPO strength, within the precessing jet model previously proposed for MAXI J1820+070: we suggest that changes in oscillation amplitude are caused by changes in the jet speed. We argue that a misaligned, precessing jet scenario is also consistent with other recent observational findings that suggest an oscillation of the Compton reflection component in phase with the QPOs.

We discuss JUNO sensitivity to the annihilation of MeV dark matter in the galactic halo via detecting inverse beta decay reactions of electron anti-neutrinos resulting from the annihilation. We study possible backgrounds to the signature, including the reactor neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, charged- and neutral-current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos, backgrounds from muon-induced fast neutrons and cosmogenic isotopes. A fiducial volume cut, as well as the pulse shape discrimination and the muon veto are applied to suppress the above backgrounds. It is shown that JUNO sensitivity to the thermally averaged dark matter annihilation rate in 10 years of exposure would be significantly better than the present-day best limit set by Super-Kamiokande and would be comparable to that expected by Hyper-Kamiokande.

A primordial black hole (PBH) with mass $10^{-15}\leq M_{\rm PBH}/M_{\odot}\leq 10^{-10}$ is currently beyond the sensitivity of both microlensing and black hole (BH) evaporation methods. A novel scenario has been proposed: When a PBH with mass $10^{-14}\leq M_{\rm PBH}/M_{\odot}\leq 10^{-11}$ transits through a white dwarf (WD) made up of carbon and oxygen, Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton (BHL) accretion in a reactive medium creates a shock wave, which generates direct detonation ignition in the WD core and then leads to thermonuclear supernovae (SNe Ia). The aim of this study is to impose constraints on the PBH to dark matter (DM) abundance fraction, $f_{\rm PBH}$, via comparing the SN Ia event rates between PBH hypotheses and observational data. For PBH fraction less than unity, we found the observed event rate prefers PBH mass region, $7.6\times 10^{-13}\leq M_{\rm PBH}/M_{\odot}\leq 6.1\times 10^{-12}$, under the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile. Meanwhile, the aforementioned PBH mass and abundance can be efficiently produced via a cosmological first-order phase transition (FOPT) in dark sector which associates with $\mathcal{O}({\rm MeV})$ energy scale and thus gives rise to complementary signals of stochastic gravitational waves (GWs) from $10^{-6}$ Hz to $10^{-5}$ Hz peak frequency which can be probed by future $μ$Ares GW interferometer.

The STCF project in China is under development with an extensive R\&D program. This White Paper presents the community inputs and scientific conclusions from the Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting that took place September 23-25, 2022 at MIT, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 424 physicists registered for the meeting. The meeting highlighted progress in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) nuclear physics since the 2015 LRP (LRP15) and identified key questions and plausible paths to obtaining answers to those questions, defining priorities for our research over the coming decade. In defining the priority of outstanding physics opportunities for the future, both prospects for the short (~ 5 years) and longer term (5-10 years and beyond) are identified together with the facilities, personnel and other resources needed to maximize the discovery potential and maintain United States leadership in QCD physics worldwide. This White Paper is organized as follows: In the Executive Summary, we detail the Recommendations and Initiatives that were presented and discussed at the Town Meeting, and their supporting rationales. Section 2 highlights major progress and accomplishments of the past seven years. It is followed, in Section 3, by an overview of the physics opportunities for the immediate future, and in relation with the next QCD frontier: the EIC. Section 4 provides an overview of the physics motivations and goals associated with the EIC. Section 5 is devoted to the workforce development and support of diversity, equity and inclusion. This is followed by a dedicated section on computing in Section 6. Section 7 describes the national need for nuclear data science and the relevance to QCD research.

Moreover, the excellent energy resolution of JUNO permits to suppress the sizable background caused by other delayed signals. Based on these advantages, the detection efficiency for the proton decay via $p\to \barνK^+$ is 36.9% with a background level of 0.2 events after 10 years of data taking. The estimated sensitivity based on 200 kton-years exposure is $9.6 \times 10^{33}$ years, competitive with the current best limits on the proton lifetime in this channel.

The physics potential of detecting $^8$B solar neutrinos will be exploited at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), in a model independent manner by using three distinct channels of the charged-current (CC), neutral-current (NC) and elastic scattering (ES) interactions. Due to the largest-ever mass of $^{13}$C nuclei in the liquid-scintillator detectors and the {expected} low background level, $^8$B solar neutrinos would be observable in the CC and NC interactions on $^{13}$C for the first time. By virtue of optimized event selections and muon veto strategies, backgrounds from the accidental coincidence, muon-induced isotopes, and external backgrounds can be greatly suppressed. Excellent signal-to-background ratios can be achieved in the CC, NC and ES channels to guarantee the $^8$B solar neutrino observation. From the sensitivity studies performed in this work, we show that JUNO, with ten years of data, can reach the {1$σ$} precision levels of 5%, 8% and 20% for the $^8$B neutrino flux, $\sin^2θ_{12}$, and $Δm^2_{21}$, respectively. It would be unique and helpful to probe the details of both solar physics and neutrino physics. In addition, when combined with SNO, the world-best precision of 3% is expected for the $^8$B neutrino flux measurement.

We present the detection potential for the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB) at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), using the inverse-beta-decay (IBD) detection channel on free protons. We employ the latest information on the DSNB flux predictions, and investigate in detail the background and its reduction for the DSNB search at JUNO. The atmospheric neutrino induced neutral current (NC) background turns out to be the most critical background, whose uncertainty is carefully evaluated from both the spread of model predictions and an envisaged \textit{in situ} measurement. We also make a careful study on the background suppression with the pulse shape discrimination (PSD) and triple coincidence (TC) cuts. With latest DSNB signal predictions, more realistic background evaluation and PSD efficiency optimization, and additional TC cut, JUNO can reach the significance of 3$σ$ for 3 years of data taking, and achieve better than 5$σ$ after 10 years for a reference DSNB model. In the pessimistic scenario of non-observation, JUNO would strongly improve the limits and exclude a significant region of the model parameter space.

The QCD effective charge $α_{g_1}(Q)$ is an observable that characterizes the magnitude of the strong interaction. At high momentum $Q$, it coincides with the QCD running coupling $α_{\rm s}(Q)$. At low $Q$, it offers a nonperturbative definition of the running coupling. We have extracted $α_{g_1}(Q)$ from measurements carried out at Jefferson Lab that span the very low to moderately high $Q$ domain, $0.14 \leq Q \leq 2.18$ GeV. The precision of the new results is much improved over the previous extractions and the reach in $Q$ at the lower end is significantly expanded. The data show that $α_{g_1}(Q)$ becomes $Q$-independent at very low $Q$. They compare well with two recent predictions of the QCD effective charge based on Dyson-Schwinger equations and on the AdS/CFT duality.

We study damping signatures at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a medium-baseline reactor neutrino oscillation experiment. These damping signatures are motivated by various new physics models, including quantum decoherence, $ν_3$ decay, neutrino absorption, and wave packet decoherence. The phenomenological effects of these models can be characterized by exponential damping factors at the probability level. We assess how well JUNO can constrain these damping parameters and how to disentangle these different damping signatures at JUNO. Compared to current experimental limits, JUNO can significantly improve the limits on $τ_3/m_3$ in the $ν_3$ decay model, the width of the neutrino wave packet $σ_x$, and the intrinsic relative dispersion of neutrino momentum $σ_{\rm rel}$.

The mediators of each decomposition can generate Majorana neutrino masses which are discussed up to two-loop level. We present an example of $0νββ$ decay model in which the neutrino masses are generated at two-loop level, and the short-range contribution can be comparable with the mass mechanism in some region of parameter space.

We have performed a systematical analysis of lepton and quark masses models based on $Γ_4\cong S_4$ modular symmetry with gCP symmetry. We have considered both cases that neutrinos are Majorana particles and Dirac particles. All possible nontrivial representation assignments of matter fields are considered, and the most general form of fermion mass matrices are given. The phenomenologically viable models with the lowest number of free parameters together with the results of fit are presented. We find out nine lepton models with seven real free parameters including the real and imaginary parts of modulus for Majorana neutrinos, which can accommodate the lepton masses and neutrino oscillation data. The prediction for leptogenesis is studied in an example lepton model. The observed baryon asymmetry as well as lepton masses and mixing angles can be explained. For Dirac neutrinos, four lepton models with five real free couplings are compatible with experimental data. Ten quark models containing seven couplings are found to be able to accommodate the hierarchical quark masses and mixing angles and CP violation phase. Furthermore, the $S_4$ modular symmetry can provide a unified description of lepton and quark flavor structure, and a benchmark model is presented.

We combine $SU(5)$ Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) with $A_4$ modular symmetry and present a comprehensive analysis of the resulting quark and lepton mass matrices for all the simplest cases. Classifying the models according to the representation assignments of the matter fields under $A_4$, we find that there are seven types of $SU(5)$ models with $A_4$ modular symmetry. We present 53 benchmark models with the fewest free parameters. The parameter space of each model is scanned to optimize the agreement between predictions and experimental data, and predictions for the masses and mixing parameters of quarks and leptons are given at the best fitting points. The best fit predictions for the leptonic CP violating Dirac phase, the lightest neutrino mass and the neutrinoless double beta decay parameter when displayed graphically are observed to cover a wide range of possible values, but are clustered around particular regions, allowing future neutrino experiments to discriminate between the different types of models.

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory~(JUNO) features a 20~kt multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator sphere as its main detector. Some of JUNO's features make it an excellent experiment for $^8$B solar neutrino measurements, such as its low-energy threshold, its high energy resolution compared to water Cherenkov detectors, and its much large target mass compared to previous liquid scintillator detectors. In this paper we present a comprehensive assessment of JUNO's potential for detecting $^8$B solar neutrinos via the neutrino-electron elastic scattering process. A reduced 2~MeV threshold on the recoil electron energy is found to be achievable assuming the intrinsic radioactive background $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th in the liquid scintillator can be controlled to 10$^{-17}$~g/g. With ten years of data taking, about 60,000 signal and 30,000 background events are expected. This large sample will enable an examination of the distortion of the recoil electron spectrum that is dominated by the neutrino flavor transformation in the dense solar matter, which will shed new light on the tension between the measured electron spectra and the predictions of the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framework. If $Δm^{2}_{21}=4.8\times10^{-5}~(7.5\times10^{-5})$~eV$^{2}$, JUNO can provide evidence of neutrino oscillation in the Earth at the about 3$σ$~(2$σ$) level by measuring the non-zero signal rate variation with respect to the solar zenith angle. Moveover, JUNO can simultaneously measure $Δm^2_{21}$ using $^8$B solar neutrinos to a precision of 20\% or better depending on the central value and to sub-percent precision using reactor antineutrinos. A comparison of these two measurements from the same detector will help elucidate the current tension between the value of $Δm^2_{21}$ reported by solar neutrino experiments and the KamLAND experiment.

The topical workshop {\it Strong QCD from Hadron Structure Experiments} took place at Jefferson Lab from Nov. 6-9, 2019. Impressive progress in relating hadron structure observables to the strong QCD mechanisms has been achieved from the {\it ab initio} QCD description of hadron structure in a diverse array of methods in order to expose emergent phenomena via quasi-particle formation. The wealth of experimental data and the advances in hadron structure theory make it possible to gain insight into strong interaction dynamics in the regime of large quark-gluon coupling (the strong QCD regime), which will address the most challenging problems of the Standard Model on the nature of the dominant part of hadron mass, quark-gluon confinement, and the emergence of the ground and excited state hadrons, as well as atomic nuclei, from QCD. This workshop aimed to develop plans and to facilitate the future synergistic efforts between experimentalists, phenomenologists, and theorists working on studies of hadron spectroscopy and structure with the goal to connect the properties of hadrons and atomic nuclei available from data to the strong QCD dynamics underlying their emergence from QCD. These results pave the way for a future breakthrough extension in the studies of QCD with an Electron-Ion Collider in the U.S.

We propose a realistic theory of fermion masses and mixings using a five-dimensional warped scenario where all fermions propagate in the bulk and the Higgs field is localized on the IR brane. The assumed $T'$ flavor symmetry is broken on the branes by flavon fields, providing a consistent scenario where fermion mass hierarchies arise from adequate choices of the bulk mass parameters, while quark and lepton mixing angles are restricted by the family symmetry. Neutrino mass splittings, mixing parameters and the Dirac CP phase all arise from the type-I seesaw mechanism and are tightly correlated, leading to predictions for the neutrino oscillation parameters, as well as expected \znbb decay rates within reach of upcoming experiments. The scheme also provides a good global description of flavor observables in the quark sector.

We present a detailed timing study of the brightest persistent X-ray source Sco X-1 using the data collected by the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope ($Insight$-HXMT) from July 2017 to August 2018. A complete $Z$-track hardness-intensity diagram (HID) is obtained. The normal branch oscillations (NBOs) at $\sim$ 6 Hz in the lower part of the normal branch (NB) and the flare branch oscillations (FBOs) at $\sim$ 16 Hz in the beginning part of the flaring branch (FB) are found in observations with the Low Energy X-ray Telescope (LE) and the Medium Energy X-ray Telescope (ME) of $Insight$-HXMT, while the horizontal branch oscillations (HBOs) at $\sim$ 40 Hz and the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) at $\sim$ 800 Hz are found simultaneously up to 60 keV for the first time on the horizontal branch (HB) by the High Energy X-ray Telescope (HE) and ME. We find that for all types of the observed QPOs, the centroid frequencies are independent of energy, while the root mean square (rms) increases with energy; the centroid frequencies of both the HBOs and kHz QPOs increase along the $Z$-track from the top to the bottom of the HB; and the NBOs show soft phase lags increasing with energy. A continuous QPO transition from the FB to NB in $\sim$ 200 s are also detected. Our results indicate that the non-thermal emission is the origin of all types of QPOs, the innermost region of the accretion disk is non-thermal in nature, and the corona is nonhomogeneous geometrically.

This model can give an excellent description of lepton flavour mixing, including an atmospheric neutrino mixing angle in the second octant, in terms of only two input parameters. We show that the observed baryon asymmetry can be generated for the lightest right-handed neutrino mass $M_{1}=1.176\times 10^{11}$ GeV in SM and $M_{1}=3.992\times 10^{10}$ GeV in MSSM with $\tanβ=5$. We study single spin asymmetries at one-loop accuracy in semi-inclusive DIS with a transversely polarized hadron in the initial state. Two measurable spin observables are predicted in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. One of the spin observables is the Sivers weighted asymmetry, another one is the Collins weighted asymmetry. The prediction takes a form of convolutions of perturbative coefficient functions and nonperturbative functions, which are twist-2 transversity distributions, twist-3 parton distributions, twist-2- and twist-3 parton fragmentation functions. These nonperturbative functions can be extracted from measurements of the spin observables and provide valuable information of the inner structure of hadrons. The measurements can be done in current COMPASS- and JLab experiments and in future experiments of EIC. The perturbative coefficient functions are calculated at one-loop level. There are collinear divergences in the calculation involving chirality-even- and chirality-odd twist operators. We find that all collinear divergences can be correctly subtracted so that the final results are finite.

In order to understand the nature of the accelerating expansion of the late-time universe, it is important to experimentally determine whether dark energy is a cosmological constant or dynamical in nature. If dark energy already exists prior to inflation, which is a reasonable assumption, then one expects that a dynamical dark energy would leave some footprint in the anisotropy of the late-time accelerated expansion. To demonstrate the viability of this notion, we invoke the quintessence field with the exponential potential as one of the simplest dynamical dark energy models allowed by observations. We investigate the effects of its quantum fluctuations (the physical origin of the perturbation being isocurvature) generated during inflation and having fully positive correlation with the primordial curvature perturbations, and estimate the anisotropy of the cosmic expansion so induced. We show that the primordial amplitude of quantum fluctuations of quintessence field {δφ}_P can be related to the tensor-to-scalar ratio r, and we calculate the perturbed luminosity distance to first order and the associated luminosity distance power spectrum, which is an estimator of anisotropicity of late-time accelerated expansion. We find that the gravitational potential at large scales and late times is less decayed in QCDM compared to that in ΛCDM so that the smaller the redshift and multipole, the more relative deficit of power in QCDM. Our results of luminosity distance power spectrum also show the similar conclusions of suppression as that of the previous investigation regarding the effect of quantum fluctuations of quintessence field on the CMB temperature anisotropies.

We study transverse-momentum-dependent factorization at twist-3 for Drell-Yan processes. The factorization can be derived straightforwardly at leading order of $α_s$. But at this order we find that light-cone singularities already exist and effects of soft gluons are not correctly factorized. We regularize the singularities with gauge links off the light-cone and introduce a soft factor to factorize the effects of soft gluons. Interestingly, the soft factor must be included in the definition of subtracted TMD parton distributions to correctly factorize the effects of soft gluons. We derive the Collins-Soper equation for one of twist-3 TMD parton distributions. The equation can be useful for resummation of large logarithms terms appearing in the corresponding structure function in collinear factorization. However, the derived equation is nonhomogeneous. This will make the resummation complicated.

We study single spin asymmetries at one-loop accuracy in Drell-Yan processes in which one of the initial hadrons is transversely polarized. The spin-dependent part of differential cross-sections can be factorized with various hadronic matrix elements of twist-2 and twist-3 operators. These operators can be of even- and odd-chirality. In this work, the studied observables of asymmetries are differential cross-sections with different weights. These weights are selected so that the observables are spin-dependent and their virtual corrections are completely determined by quark form factor. In the calculations of one-loop corrections we meet collinear divergences in the contributions involving chirality-odd and chirality-even operators. We find that all of the divergences can be correctly subtracted. Therefore, our results give an explicit example of QCD factorization with twist-3 operators, especially, QCD factorization with chirality-odd twist-3 operators.

We provide a classification of generalized CP symmetries preserved by the neutrino mass matrix according to the number of zero entries in the associated transformation matrix. We determine the corresponding constrained form of the lepton mixing matrix, characterized by correlations between the mixing angles and the CP violating phases. We compare with the corresponding restrictions from current neutrino oscillation global fits and show that, in some cases, the Dirac CP phase characterizing oscillations is highly constrained. Implications for current and upcoming long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments T2K, NO$ν$A and DUNE, as well as neutrinoless double beta decay experiments are discussed. We also study the cosmological implications of such schemes for leptogenesis.

We discuss flavour dependent leptogenesis in the framework of lepton flavour models based on discrete flavour and CP symmetries applied to the type-I seesaw model. Working in the flavour basis, we analyse the case of two general residual CP symmetries in the neutrino sector, which corresponds to all possible semi-direct models based on a preserved $Z_2$ in the neutrino sector, together with a CP symmetry, which constrains the PMNS matrix up to a single free parameter which may be fixed by the reactor angle. We systematically study and classify this case for all possible residual CP symmetries, and show that the $R$-matrix is tightly constrained up to a single free parameter, with only certain forms being consistent with successful leptogenesis, leading to possible connections between leptogenesis and PMNS parameters. The formalism is completely general in the sense that the two residual CP symmetries could result from any high energy discrete flavour theory which respects any CP symmetry. As a simple example, we apply the formalism to a high energy $S_4$ flavour symmetry with a generalized CP symmetry, broken to two residual CP symmetries in the neutrino sector, recovering familiar results for PMNS predictions, together with new results for flavour dependent leptogenesis.

The latter gives stringent predictions for the neutrino mixing parameters, and the Dirac CP violation phase, all described in terms of only two independent parameters at leading order. The scheme also gives an adequate CKM fit and should be testable within upcoming oscillation experiments.

A class of dynamical dark energy models is constructed through an extended version of fermion fields corresponding to phantom dark ghost spinors, which are spin one half with mass dimension one. We find that if these spinors interact with torsion fields in a homogeneous and isotropic universe, then it does not imply any future dark energy singularity or any abrupt event, though the fermion has a negative kinetic energy. In fact, the equation of state of this dark energy model will asymptotically approach the value $w=-1$ from above without crossing the phantom divide and inducing therefore a de Sitter state. Consequently, we expect the model to be stable because no real phantom fields will be created. At late time, the torsion fields will vanish as the corresponding phantom dark ghost spinors dilute. As would be expected, intuitively, this result is unaffected by the presence of cold dark matter although the proof is not as straightforward as in general relativity.

The neutrino mass matrix has remnant CP symmetry expressed in terms of the lepton mixing matrix, and vice versa the remnant CP transformations allow us to reconstruct the mixing matrix. We study the scenario that all the four remnant CP transformations are preserved by the neutrino mass matrix. The most general parameterization of remnant CP transformations is presented. The lepton mixing matrix is completely fixed by the remnant CP, and its explicit form is derived. The necessary and sufficient condition for conserved Dirac CP violating phase is found. If the Klein four flavor symmetry generated by the postulated remnant CP transformations arises from a finite flavor symmetry group, the phenomenologically viable lepton flavor mixing would be the trimaximal pattern, both Dirac CP phase $δ_{CP}$ and Majorana phase $α_{31}$ are either $0$ or $π$ while another Majorana phase $α_{21}$ is a rational multiple of $π$. These general results are confirmed to be true in the case that the finite flavor symmetry group is $Δ(6n^2)$.

In this paper, a modified Eddington-inspired-Born-Infeld (EiBI) theory with a pure trace term $g_{μν}R$ being added to the determinantal action is analysed from a cosmological point of view. It corresponds to the most general action constructed from a rank two tensor that contains up to first order terms in curvature. This term can equally be seen as a conformal factor multiplying the metric $g_{μν}$. This very interesting type of amendment has not been considered within the Palatini formalism despite the large amount of works on the Born-Infeld-inspired theory of gravity. This model can provide smooth bouncing solutions which were not allowed in the EiBI model for the same EiBI coupling. Most interestingly, for a radiation filled universe there are some regions of the parameter space that can naturally lead to a de Sitter inflationary stage without the need of any exotic matter field. Finally, in this model we discover a new type of cosmic "quasi-sudden" singularity, where the cosmic time derivative of the Hubble rate becomes very large but finite at a finite cosmic time.

The strategy of constraining the lepton flavor mixing from remnant CP symmetry is investigated in a rather general way. The neutrino mass matrix generally admits four remnant CP transformations which can be derived from the measured lepton mixing matrix in the charged lepton diagonal basis. Conversely, the lepton mixing matrix can be reconstructed from the postulated remnant CP transformations. All mixing angles and CP violating phases can be completely determined by the full set of remnant CP transformations or three of them. When one or two remnant CP transformations are preserved, the resulting lepton mixing matrix would depend on three real parameters or one real parameter respectively in addition to the parameters characterizing the remnant CP, and the concrete form of the mixing matrix is presented. The phenomenological predictions for the mixing parameters are discussed. The conditions leading to vanishing or maximal Dirac CP violation are studied.

Furthermore, evidence for the $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ decay is obtained with a statistical significance of three standard deviations. The branching fraction measurements are statistically compatible with SM predictions and impose stringent constraints on several theories beyond the SM.

We discuss a scheme of nonperturbative pair production by high energy photons ($ω\gtrsim m$) in a strong external field achievable at the next high intensity laser experiments. The pair momentum is boosted and for $ω\gtrsim 1.2m$ the pair yield is increased when the external field is formed by two laser pulses converging at a small angle. These characteristics are nonperturbative in origin and related to the presence of magnetic field in addition to electric field. By enhancing the signal over perturbative backgrounds, these features allow the employment of above-threshold photons $ω>2m$, which further increases the pair yield. We note the close relation of this photon-pair conversion mechanism to spontaneous pair creation, recommending it as an accessible stepping stone experiment using state-of-the-art or soon-to-be laser technology.

This theory is formulated on the Weitzenbock space-time and the teleparallel representation is used instead of the standard Riemannian representation. We find that although this theory is shown to be singularity-free for certain region of the parameter space in which the divergence of the Hubble rate at the high energy regime is substituted by a de-Sitter stage or a bounce in a Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universe, cosmological singularities such as Big Rip, Big Bang, Big Freeze, and Sudden singularities can emerge in other regions of the configuration space of the theory. We also show that all these singular events exist even though the Universe is filled with a perfect fluid with a constant equation of state.

We study cosmological perturbation theory within the framework of unimodular gravity. We show that the Lagrangian constraint on the determinant of the metric required by unimodular gravity leads to an extra constraint on the gauge freedom of the metric perturbations. Although the main equation of motion for the gravitational potential remains the same, the shift variable, which is gauge artifact in General Relativity, cannot be set to zero in unimodular gravity. This non-vanishing shift variable affects the propagation of photons throughout the cosmological evolution and therefore modifies the Sachs-Wolfe relation between the relativistic gravitational potential and the microwave temperature anisotropies. However, for adiabatic fluctuations the difference between the result in General Relativity and unimodular gravity is suppressed on large angular scales. Thus, no strong constraints on the theory can be derived.
