Motivated by the recent measurements of CP violating effects in singly Cabibbo suppressed $D^0$ decays, we revisit the theoretical predictions of these channels. Using up-to-date values for the decay constants and form factors, we find already within naive QCD factorisation surprisingly good agreement between the central values of the branching ratios and the corresponding experimental data. We further extend the study of these modes by employing the method of light-cone sum rules (LCSR) with light-meson light-cone distribution amplitudes. Using for the first time this framework to compute the leading contribution to the decay amplitude, we can again describe well the experimental branching ratios for the modes $D^0 \to π^+ K^-$, $D^0 \to K^+ K^-$, $D^0 \to π^+ π^- $ and $D^0 \to K^+ π^-$. The combination of our results with known predictions for the penguin contributions, obtained with LCSR, leads to an upper bound for the value of direct CP violation expected in the Standard Model of $|Δa_{\rm CP}^{\rm dir}| \leq {2.4} \times 10^{-4} \,,$ which is approximately a factor six smaller than the current measurement.

In the 1990s, very low experimental values for the lifetime ratio $τ(Λ_b)/τ(B_d)$ triggered a considerable amount of doubt in the applicability of the heavy quark expansion (HQE), which is based on the assumption of quark-hadron duality (QHD) for inclusive total decay rates. However, these low values turned out to be the result of purely experimental problems, and the current HFLAV average reads $τ(Λ_b)/τ(B_d) = 0.969(6)$. In this work, we present the Standard Model predictions for the $b$-baryon lifetimes within the framework of the HQE. In particular, we include for the first time the contribution of the Darwin term and we update the estimates for the matrix elements of the dimension-six four-quark operators. Within experimental and theoretical uncertainties, we find excellent agreement between the data and the HQE predictions, and thus no indication for any visible violation of QHD. Our numerical results can be summarised by the ratios $τ(Λ_b)/τ(B_d) = 0.955(14)$, $τ(Ω_b^-)/τ(B_d) = 1.081(42)$, and $τ(Ξ_b^0)/τ(Ξ_b^-) = 0.929(28)$.

The well-known lifetime ratio $τ(B^+)/τ(B_d)$ and the experimental bound on the semi-leptonic CP asymmetry $a_{sl}^d$, provide strong, complementary constraints on some of the NP Wilson coefficients.

We update the Standard Model (SM) predictions for $B$-meson lifetimes within the heavy quark expansion (HQE). Including for the first time the contribution of the Darwin operator, SU(3)$_F$ breaking corrections to the matrix element of dimension-six four-quark operators and the so-called eye-contractions, we obtain for the total widths $Γ(B^+) = (0.58^{+0.11}_{-0.07}) \, \mbox{ps}^{-1}$, $Γ(B_d) = (0.63^{+0.11}_{-0.07}) \, \mbox{ps}^{-1}$, $Γ(B_s) = (0.63^{+0.11}_{-0.07}) \, \mbox{ps}^{-1}$, and for the lifetime ratios $τ(B^+) / τ(B_d) = 1.086 \pm 0.022$, $τ(B_s) / τ(B_d) = 1.003 \pm 0.006 \, (1.028 \pm 0.011)$. The two values for the last observable arise from using two different sets of input for the non-perturbative parameters $μ_π^2(B_d)$, $μ_G^2(B_d)$, and $ρ_D^3(B_d)$ as well as from different estimates of the SU(3)$_F$ breaking in these parameters. Our results are overall in very good agreement with the corresponding experimental data, however, there seems to emerge a tension in $τ(B_s)/τ(B_d)$ when considering the second set of input parameters. Specifically, this observable is extremely sensitive to the size of the parameter $ρ_D^3 (B_d)$ and of the SU(3)$_F$ breaking effects in $μ_π^2$, $μ_G^2$ and $ρ_D^3$; hence, it is of utmost importance to be able to better constrain all these parameters. In this respect, an extraction of $μ_π^2 (B_s), μ_G^2 (B_s), ρ_D^3 (B_s)$ from future experimental data on inclusive semileptonic $B_s$-meson decays or from direct non-perturbative calculations, as well as more insights about the value of $ρ_D^3 (B)$ extracted from fit, would be very helpful in reducing the corresponding theory uncertainties.

Two Higgs doublet models are attractive scenarios for physics beyond the Standard Model. In particular, lepton-specific manifestations remain contenders to explain the observed discrepancy between the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $a_μ$ predicted within the Standard Model and recent observations at Fermilab and BNL. Dominant uncertainties that affect $a_μ$ have motivated the MUonE experiment to access the hadronic vacuum polarisation contribution that impacts $a_μ$ via elastic muon-electron scattering. In this work, we contrast the high precision that is achievable within the MUonE context with constraints from flavour physics, precision electroweak constraints and LHC searches as well as their extrapolations for a range of two Higgs doublet models with a softly broken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. We find that the sensitivity of MUonE does not extend beyond the parameter regions that are already excluded by other constraints. MUonE will therefore provide a detailed measurement of the hadronic vacuum polarisation contribution which then transparently informs $a_μ$ interpretations in 2HDMs without modifications of correlations from beyond the Standard Model interactions. In passing we extend earlier results of LHC and flavour projections to lepton-specific 2HDM (Types X and Y) scenarios, and comment on the possibility of modifying the value of the W-boson mass; we briefly discuss the implications for a strong first-order electroweak phase transition for these models.

We study the intersection of flavour and collider physics for Two-Higgs-Doublet models of Type I and II. Drawing from the flavour precision-LHC exotics search complementarity, we also provide a projection of the future sensitivity that can be achieved in light of currently available analyses. On the one hand, we find that the parameter space of the 2HDM can be explored significantly further with more data from the LHC with some complementarity with flavour physics. On the other hand, flavour physics results alongside their projections remain powerful tools to constrain the model space in regions where direct sensitivity to new states via exotics searches is lost. Our results further highlight the recently observed flavour physics anomalies as important drivers of new physics searches in the future; we also touch on implications for a strong first order electroweak phase transition.

Motivated by recent indications that the rates of colour-allowed non-leptonic channels are not in agreement with their Standard Model expectations based on QCD factorisation, we investigate the potential to study CP asymmetries with these decays. In the Standard Model, these flavour-specific decays are sensitive to CP violation in $B^0_{(s)}$--$\bar{B}^0_{(s)}$ mixing, which is predicted with low uncertainties and can be measured precisely with semileptonic decays. If there are beyond Standard Model contributions to the non-leptonic decay amplitudes, there could be significant enhancements to the CP asymmetries. Measurements of these quantities therefore have potential to identify BSM effects without relying on Standard Model predictions that might be affected by hadronic effects. We discuss the experimental prospects, and note the excellent potential for a precise determination of the CP asymmetry in $\bar{B}_s \to D_s^+ π^-$ decays by the LHCb experiment.

Determining for the first time the Darwin operator contribution for the non-leptonic charm-quark decays and using new non-perturbative results for the matrix elements of $ΔC=0$ four-quark operators, including eye-contractions, we present a comprehensive study of the lifetimes of charmed mesons and inclusive semileptonic decay rates as well as the ratios, within the framework of the Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE). We find good agreement with experiment for the ratio $τ(D^+)/τ(D^0)$, for the total $D_s^+$-meson decay rate, for the semileptonic rates of all three mesons $D^0$, $D^+$ and $D_s^+$, and for the semileptonic ratio $Γ_{sl}^{D^+}/Γ_{sl}^{D^0}$. The total decay rates of the $D^0$ and $D^+$ mesons are underestimated in our HQE approach and we suspect that this is due to missing higher-order QCD corrections to the free charm quark decay and the Pauli interference contribution. For the $SU(3)_F$ breaking ratios $τ(D_s^+) / τ(D^0) $ and $Γ_{sl}^{D_s^+}/Γ_{sl}^{D^0} $ our predictions lie closer to one than experiment. This might originate from the poor knowledge of the non-perturbative parameters $μ_G^2$, $μ_π^2$ and $ρ_D^3$ in the $D^0$ and $D_s^+$ systems. These parameters could be determined by experimental studies of the moments of inclusive semileptonic $D$ meson decays.

We perform a comprehensive study of the allowed parameter space of the Two Higgs Doublet Model of Type II (2HDM-II). Using the theoretical framework flavio we combine the most recent flavour, collider and electroweak precision observables with theoretical constraints to obtain bounds on the mass spectrum of the theory. In particular we find that the 2HDM-II fits the data slightly better than the Standard Model (SM) with best fit values of the heavy Higgs masses around 2 TeV and a value of $\tan β\approx 4$. Moreover, we conclude that the wrong-sign limit is disfavoured by Higgs signal strengths and excluded by the global fit by more than five standard deviations and potential deviations from the alignment limit can only be tiny. Finally we test the consequences of our study on electroweak baryogenesis via the program package BSMPT and we find that the allowed parameter space strongly discourages a strong first order phase transition within the 2HDM-II.

It is well known that this huge suppression results from severe GIM cancellations. We find that this mismatch can be solved by individually choosing the renormalisation scale of the different internal quark contributions. For $b$ and $c$ hadron lifetimes, as well as for the decay rate difference of neutral $B$ mesons the effect of our scale setting procedure lies within the previously quoted theory uncertainties, while we get enlarged theory uncertainties for the semi-leptonic CP asymmetries in the $B$ system.

We compute the Darwin operator contribution ($1/m_b^3$ correction) to the width of the inclusive non-leptonic decay of a $B$ meson ($B^+$, $B_d$ or $B_s$), stemming from the quark flavour-changing transition $b \to q_1 \bar q_2 q_3$, where $q_1,q_2 = u, c$ and $q_3 = d, s$. The key ideas of the computation are the local expansion of the quark propagator in the external gluon field including terms with covariant derivative of the gluon field strength tensor and the standard technique of the Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE). We confirm the previously known expressions of the $1/m_b^3$ contributions to the semi-leptonic decay $b \to q_1 \ell \bar ν_\ell$, with $\ell = e, μ, τ$ and of the $1/m_b^2$ contributions to the non-leptonic modes. We find that this new term can give a sizeable correction of about $- 4 \, \%$ to the non-leptonic decay width of a $B$ meson. For $B_d$ and $B_s$ mesons this turns out to be the dominant correction to the free b-quark decay, while for the $B^+$ meson the Darwin term gives the second most important correction - roughly 1/2 to 1/3 of the phase space enhanced Pauli interference contribution. Due to the tiny experimental uncertainties in lifetime measurements the incorporation of the Darwin term contribution is crucial for precision tests of the Standard Model.

We present a considerably improved analysis of model-independent bounds on new physics effects in non-leptonic tree-level decays of B-mesons. Our main finding is that contributions of about $\pm 0.1 $ to the Wilson coefficient of the colour-singlet operator $Q_2$ of the effective weak Hamiltonian and contributions in the range of $\pm 0.5$ (both for real and imaginary part) to $Q_1$ can currently not be excluded at the $90\%$ C.L.. Effects of such a size can modify the direct experimental extraction of the CKM angle $γ$ by up to $10^{\circ}$ and they could lead to an enhancement of the decay rate difference $ΔΓ_d$ of up to a factor of 5 over its SM value - a size that could explain the D0 dimuon asymmetry. Future more precise measurements of the semi-leptonic asymmetries $a_{sl}^q$ and the lifetime ratio $τ(B_s) / τ(B_d)$ will allow to shrink the bounds on tree-level new physics effects considerably. Due to significant improvements in the precision of the non-perturbative input we update all SM predictions for the mixing obervables in the course of this analysis, obtaining: $ΔM_s = (18.77 \pm 0.86 ) \, \mbox{ps}^{-1}$, $ΔM_d = (0.543 \pm 0.029) \, \mbox{ps}^{-1}$, $ΔΓ_s = (9.1 \pm 1.3 ) \cdot 10^{-2} \, \mbox{ps}^{-1}$, $ΔΓ_d = (2.6 \pm 0.4 ) \cdot 10^{-3} \, \mbox{ps}^{-1}$, $a_{sl}^s = (2.06 \pm 0.18) \cdot 10^{-5}$ and $a_{sl}^d = (-4.73 \pm 0.42) \cdot 10^{-4}$.

From a global analysis, we obtain stringent constraints on 16 of the 20 BSM operators, including the 10 operators $Q^{c\prime }_{1 \dots 10}$ involving a right-handed strange quark. Focussing on CP-conserving new physics, the constraints correspond to NP scales of order 10 TeV in most cases, always dominated by exclusive and/or radiative $B$-decays via RGE mixing. For the remaining four operators, including the two Standard-Model (SM) ones, larger effects are experimentally allowed, as previously noted in arXiv:1701.09183. We extend that paper's scope to the CP-violating case, paying attention to the impact on the decay rate and time-dependent CP-violation in $B_d \to J/ψK_S$. We show that quantifiable constraints arise for new physics in either of the two SM operators, with the uncertain non-perturbative matrix element of the colour-suppressed operator determined from the data. For new physics in the SM suppressed coefficient $C^c_1$ we find two perfectly viable, narrow bands of complex Wilson coefficients. Somewhat curiously, one of them contains a region where the fitted matrix element for the colour-suppressed operator is in agreement with naive factorization, contrarily to a widely held belief that large non-factorizable contributions to $B_d \to J/ψK_S$ are implied by experimental data.

Combining these results with the most recent lattice values for the ratio of decay constants $f_{B_s} / f_{B_d}$ we obtain the most precise determination of the ratio $ξ= f_{B_s} \sqrt{\overline{B}^s_{Q_1}}/ f_{B_d} \sqrt{\overline{B}^d_{Q_1}} = 1.2014^{+0.0065}_{-0.0072}$ in agreement with recent lattice determinations. We find $ΔM_s=(18.5_{-1.5}^{+1.2})\text{ps}^{-1}$ and $ΔM_d=(0.547_{-0.046}^{+0.035})\text{ps}^{-1}$ to be consistent with experiments at below one sigma. Assuming the validity of the SM, our calculation can be used to directly determine the ratio of CKM elements $|V_{td} / V_{ts} | = 0.2045^{+0.0012}_{-0.0013}$, which is compatible with the results from the CKM fitting groups, but again more precise.

We show that for masses below 80 GeV and flavour violating coupling of the order of $10^{-4}$, this model can successfully resolve the tension and avoid constraints from dijet searches, $D^0-\overline{D}^0$ mixing and measurements of the $Z$ width.

We document the extraordinary breadth of the HL/HE-LHC programme enabled by a putative Upgrade II of the dedicated flavour physics experiment LHCb and the evolution of the established flavour physics role of the ATLAS and CMS general purpose experiments. We connect the dedicated flavour physics programme to studies of the top quark, Higgs boson, and direct high-$p_T$ searches for new particles and force carriers. Using the most recent FLAG average of lattice results for the non-perturbative matrix elements and the CKM-fitter determination of $V_{cb}$ points to a $1.8 \, σ$ discrepancy in $ΔM_s^{\rm SM} > ΔM_s^{\rm exp}$. Extending the analysis in Ref. Many new physics models that explain the intriguing anomalies in the $b$-quark flavour sector are severely constrained by $B_s$-mixing, for which the Standard Model prediction and experiment agreed well until recently. The most recent FLAG average of lattice results for the non-perturbative matrix elements points, however, in the direction of a small discrepancy in this observable. Using up-to-date inputs from standard sources such as PDG, FLAG and one of the two leading CKM fitting groups to determine $ΔM_s^{\rm SM}$, we find a severe reduction of the allowed parameter space of $Z'$ and leptoquark models explaining the $B$-anomalies. Remarkably, in the former case the upper bound on the $Z'$ mass approaches dangerously close to the energy scales already probed by the LHC. We finally identify some model building directions in order to alleviate the tension with $B_s$-mixing.

The hadronic matrix elements of dimension-six $ΔF=0,2$ operators are crucial inputs for the theory predictions of mixing observables and lifetime ratios in the $B$ and $D$ system. We determine them using HQET sum rules for three-point correlators. The results of the required three-loop computation of the correlators and the one-loop computation of the QCD-HQET matching are given in analytic form. For mixing matrix elements we find very good agreement with recent lattice results and comparable theoretical uncertainties. For lifetime matrix elements we present the first ever determination in the $D$ meson sector and the first determination of $ΔB=0$ matrix elements with uncertainties under control - superseeding preliminary lattice studies stemming from 2001 and earlier. With our state-of-the-art determination of the bag parameters we predict: $τ(B^+)/τ(B_d^0) = 1.082_{-0.026}^{+0.022}$, $τ(B_s^0)/τ(B_d^0) = 1.0007\pm0.0025$, $τ(D^+)/τ(D^0) = 2.7_{-0.8}^{+0.7}$ and the mixing-observables in the $B_s$ and $B_d$ system, in good agreement with the most recent experimental averages.

We conduct a systematic study of the impact of new physics in quark-level $b \to c \bar{c} s$ transitions on $B$-physics, in particular rare $B$-decays and $B$-meson lifetime observables. We find viable scenarios where a sizable effect in rare semileptonic $B$-decays can be generated, compatible with experimental indications and with a possible dependence on the dilepton invariant mass, while being consistent with constraints from radiative $B$-decay and the measured $B_s$ width difference. We show how, if the effect is generated at the weak scale or beyond, strong renormalisation-group effects can enhance the impact on semileptonic decays while leaving radiative $B$-decay largely unaffected. A good complementarity of the different $B$-physics observables implies that precise measurements of lifetime observables at LHCb may be able to confirm, refine, or rule out this scenario.

Meson mixing is considered to be an ideal candidate for new physics searches. Current experimental precision has greatly increased over the recent years, excelling in several cases the theoretical precision. A possible limit in the theoretical accuracy could be a hypothetical breakdown of quark-hadron duality. We propose a simple model for duality violations and give stringent bounds on such effects for mixing observables, indicating regions, where future measurements of $ΔΓ_d$, $a_{sl}^d$ and $a_{sl}^s$ would be clear signals of new physics. Finally, we turn our attention to the charm sector, and reveal that already a modest duality violation of about $20 \%$ could explain the huge difference between HQE predictions for D-mixing and experimental data.

The experimental measurements of $ΔM_s$ and $ΔΓ_s$ are more precise and agree very well with theoretica predictions, which can also be viewed as a proof of theoretical tools, like the Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE). CP violating studies in the $B_s^0$ system provide essential information to test the SM expectations. Mixing quantities can be used to study model independent bounds on new physics (NP) effects, yielding the familiar picture: the standard model (SM) gives the dominant contribution, while there is still some sizable space for NP effects. In the case of $ΔM_s$ effects of the order of $15\%$ are not excluded. In the CP phase $φ_s$ due to CP violation in the interference of decays and mixing ${\cal O} (100 \%)$ effects are still possible. The semi-leptonic CP asymmetry $a_{\rm sl}^s$, which is due to CP violation in mixing, could still be a factor of 250 larger than its robust SM expectation and thus provides a very clean observable for NP searches. We comment in detail on theoretical improvements that are necessary to make full use of the experimental precision.

We critically review the assumption that no new physics is acting in tree-level
$B$-meson decays and study the consequences for the ultimate precision in the direct determination of the CKM angle $γ$. In our exploratory study we find that sizable universal new physics contributions, $ΔC_{1,2}$, to the tree-level Wilson coefficients $C_{1,2}$ of the effective Hamiltonian describing weak decays of the $b$ quark are currently not excluded by experimental data. In particular we find that Im $ΔC_1 $ and Im $ΔC_2 $ can easily be of order $\pm 10%$ without violating any constraints from data. Such a size of new physics effects in $C_1$ and $C_2$ corresponds to an intrinsic uncertainty in the CKM angle $γ$ of the order of $|δγ| \approx 4^\circ$, which is slightly below the current experimental precision. The accuracy in the determination of $γ$ can be improved by putting stronger constraints on the tree-level Wilson coefficients, in particular $C_1$. To this end we suggest a more refined theoretical study as well as a more precise measurements of the observables that currently provide the strongest bounds on hypothetical new weak phases in $C_1$ and $C_2$. We note that the semi-leptonic CP asymmetries seem to have the best prospect for improving the bound on the weak phase in $C_1$.

In that respect we present several observables, which are particularly sensitive to the remaining new physics (NP) parameter space. $B$-mixing can also be used to test the fundaments of quantum mechanics, here we suggest a new measurement of the ratio of like-sign dilepton events to opposite-sign dilepton events. Finally we summarise briefly the status of lifetimes of heavy hadrons. The corresponding theory predictions rely on the same tool - the Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE) - as some of the mixing quantities. New experimental data has recently proven the validity of the HQE to a high accuracy. However, the theoretical precision of lifetime predictions is strongly limited by a lack of non-perturbative evaluations of matrix elements of dimension-six operators.

The theoretical precision is currently strongly limited by the unknown size of the non-perturbative matrix elements of four-quark operators, which could be determined with lattice simulations.

We review the status of flavour physics in spring 2014. The numerous accurate new measurements of flavour experiments have enabled us to test our theoretical understanding of flavour processes with an unprecedented precision. At first sight the dominant amount of measurements seems to be standard model like. Having a closer look one finds, however, that in most of the observables there is still some considerable space for new effects. In addition many discrepancies are still not settled yet. For further investigations and definite conclusions an improvement of the theoretical precision as well as the experimental one is mandatory.

Motivated by the recent measurement of the dimuon asymmetry by the DØ collaboration, which could be interpreted as an enhanced decay rate difference in the neutral $B_d$-meson system, we investigate the possible size of new-physics contributions to $ΔΓ_d$. In particular, we perform model-independent studies of non-standard effects associated to the dimension-six current-current operators $(\bar{d} p)(\bar p^{\hspace{0.25mm}\prime} b)$ with $p,p^\prime= u,c$ as well as $(\bar{d}b) (\barττ)$. In both cases we find that for certain flavour or Lorentz structures of the operators sizable deviations of $ΔΓ_d$ away from the Standard Model expectation cannot be excluded in a model-independent fashion.

Nevertheless currently neither theory nor experiment have reached definite conclusions about the origin of a large CP violating effect in hadronic $D$ decays. We review briefly (part of) the current theory literature and present as the most important outcome of the many investigations initial steps in a long journey to understand the standard model contribution to hadronic $D$ meson decays from first principles as well as various control channels, that can be studied by experiment.

The discovery by the ATLAS and CMS experiments of a new boson with mass around 125 GeV and with measured properties compatible with those of a Standard-Model Higgs boson, coupled with the absence of discoveries of phenomena beyond the Standard Model at the TeV scale, has triggered interest in ideas for future Higgs factories. A new circular e+e- collider hosted in a 80 to 100 km tunnel, TLEP, is among the most attractive solutions proposed so far. It has a clean experimental environment, produces high luminosity for top-quark, Higgs boson, W and Z studies, accommodates multiple detectors, and can reach energies up to the t-tbar threshold and beyond. It will enable measurements of the Higgs boson properties and of Electroweak Symmetry-Breaking (EWSB) parameters with unequalled precision, offering exploration of physics beyond the Standard Model in the multi-TeV range. Moreover, being the natural precursor of the VHE-LHC, a 100 TeV hadron machine in the same tunnel, it builds up a long-term vision for particle physics. Altogether, the combination of TLEP and the VHE-LHC offers, for a great cost effectiveness, the best precision and the best search reach of all options presently on the market. This paper presents a first appraisal of the salient features of the TLEP physics potential, to serve as a baseline for a more extensive design study.

The inclusive decay rate b to ccs is enhanced considerably due to perturbative QCD corrections. We recalculate the dominant part of the NLO-QCD corrections, because they cannot be reconstructed from the literature and we give the full expressions in this paper. Further we include some previously neglected corrections originating from penguin diagrams. Combined with the impressive progress in the accurate determination of input parameters like charm quark mass, bottom quark mass and CKM parameters, this enables us to make a very precise prediction of the corresponding branching ratio Br (b to ccs) = (23 pm 2)%. This result is an essential ingredient for a model and even decay channel independent search for new physics effects in B decays.

Even if new data indicate that direct CP violation in D-meson decays is compatible with the standard model expectation, it has triggered a lot of interest, and charm phenomenology will remain an essential part of new physics searches due to its unique role as a probe for flavor-changing neutral currents among up-type quarks. Charm physics poses considerable theoretical challenges, because the charm mass is neither light nor truly heavy. The heavy quark expansion (HQE) provides a perturbative expansion in the inverse heavy quark mass for inclusive rates. It has proved to be very successful in the B sector, yet its validity for charm decays has often been questioned. We present results of a HQE study of D-meson lifetimes including NLO QCD and subleading 1/m_c corrections. We find good agreement with experimental data, but with huge hadronic uncertainties due to missing lattice input for hadronic matrix elements.

We perform a comprehensive statistical analysis of the standard model (SM) with three and four generations using the latest Higgs search results from LHC and Tevatron, the electroweak precision observables (EWPOs) measured at LEP and SLD and the latest determinations of M_W, m_t and alpha_s. For the three-generation case we analyse the tensions in the electroweak fit by removing individual observables from the fit and comparing their predicted values with the measured ones. In particular, we discuss the impact of the Higgs search results on the deviations of the EWPOs from their best-fit values. Our indirect prediction of the top mass is m_t=175.7(+3.0)(-2.2) GeV at 68.3% CL, in good agreement with the direct measurement. We also plot the preferred area in the M_W - m_t plane. The best-fit Higgs mass is 126.0 GeV. For the case of the SM with a perturbative sequential fourth fermion generation (SM4) we discuss the deviations of the Higgs signal strengths from their best-fit values. The H -> gamma gamma signal strength now disagrees with its best-fit SM4 value at more than 4 sigma. We perform a likelihood-ratio test to compare the SM and SM4 and show that the SM4 is excluded at 5.3 sigma. Without the Tevatron data on H -> b bbar the significance drops to 4.8 sigma.

During 2011 the LHCb experiment at CERN collected 1.0 fb-1 of sqrt{s} = 7 TeV pp collisions. Due to the large heavy quark production cross-sections, these data provide unprecedented samples of heavy flavoured hadrons. The first results from LHCb have made a significant impact on the flavour physics landscape and have definitively proved the concept of a dedicated experiment in the forward region at a hadron collider. This document discusses the implications of these first measurements on classes of extensions to the Standard Model, bearing in mind the interplay with the results of searches for on-shell production of new particles at ATLAS and CMS. The physics potential of an upgrade to the LHCb detector, which would allow an order of magnitude more data to be collected, is emphasised.

We perform a global fit of the parameters of the Standard Model with a sequential fourth generation (SM4) to LHC and Tevatron Higgs data and electroweak precision data. Using several likelihood ratio tests we compare the performance of the SM4 and SM3 at describing the measured data. Since the SM3 and SM4 are not nested (i.e. the SM3 can not be considered as a special case of the SM4 with some parameters fixed) the usual analytical formulae for p-values in likelihood ratio tests do not hold. We thus apply a new method to compute these p-values. For a Higgs mass of 126.5 GeV and fourth-generation quark masses above 600 GeV we find that the SM4 is excluded at 3.1 sigma.
