We propose a bottom-up approach to the study of possession and its outcomes for association football, based on probabilistic finite state automata with transition probabilities described by a Markov process. We show how even a very simple model yields faithful approximations to the distribution of passing sequences and chances of taking shots for English Premier League teams, which we fit using a whole season of granular game data (380 games). We compare the resulting model with classical top-down distributions traditionally used to describe possessions, showing that the Markov models yield a more accurate asymptotic behaviour.

We showcase in this paper the use of some tools from network theory to describe the strategy of football teams. Using passing data made available by FIFA during the 2010 World Cup, we construct for each team a weighted and directed network in which nodes correspond to players and arrows to passes. The resulting network or graph provides a direct visual inspection of a team's strategy, from which we can identify play pattern, determine hot-spots on the play and localize potential weaknesses. Using different centrality measures, we can also determine the relative importance of each player in the game, the `popularity' of a player, and the effect of removing players from the game.

Projective geometry for blueprints

Abstract:
In this note, we generalize the Proj-construction from usual schemes to blue schemes. This yields the definition of projective space and projective varieties over a blueprint. In particular, it is possible to descend closed subvarieties of a projective space to a canonical F_1-model. We discuss this explicitly in case of the Grassmannian Gr(2,4).

Abstract:
Let $R$ be a semisimple ring. A pair $(A,C)$ is called almost-Koszul if $A$ is a connected graded $R$-ring and $C$ is a compatible connected graded $R$-coring. To an almost-Koszul pair one associates three chain complexes and three cochain complexes such that one of them is exact if and only if the others are so. To an almost-Koszul pair one associates three chain complexes and three cochain complexes such that one of them is exact if and only if the others are so. In this situation $(A,C)$ is said to be Koszul. One proves that a connected $R$-ring $A$ is Koszul if and only if there is a connected $R$-coring $C$ such that $(A,C)$ is Koszul. This result allows us to investigate the Hochschild (co)homology of Koszul rings. We apply our method to show that the twisted tensor product of two Koszul rings is Koszul. More examples and applications of Koszul pairs, including a generalization of Fröberg Theorem, are discussed in the last part of the paper.

In noncommutative geometry a `Lie algebra' or bidirectional bicovariant differential calculus on a finite group is provided by a choice of an ad-stable generating subset C stable under inversion. We study the associated Killing form. For the universal calculus associated to C=G \ {e} we show that the magnitude of the Killing form μ=\sum_{a,b\in C}K^{-1}_{a,b} is defined for all finite groups (even when K is not invertible) and that a finite group is Roth, meaning its conjugation representation contains every irreducible, iff μ is not equal to 1/(N-1), where N is the number of conjugacy classes. We show further that the Killing form is invertible in the Roth case, and that the Killing form restricted to the (N-1)-dimensional subspace of invariant vectors is invertible iff the finite group is almost-Roth group (meaning its conjugation representation has at most one missing irreducible). It is known that most finite simple groups are Roth and that all are almost Roth. At the other extreme from the universal calculus we prove that the generating conjugacy class in the case of the dihedral groups D_{2n} with n odd has invertible Killing form, and the same for the 2-cycles conjugacy class in any S_n. We also compute some eigenvalues of the Killing form in the case of the n-cycles class in S_n. Finally, we verify invertibility of the Killing forms of all real conjugacy classes in all nonabelian finite simple groups to order 75,000, by computer, and we conjecture this to extend to all nonabelian finite simple groups.

In a second part, we will tie up these different theories by describing functors between the different F_1-geometries, which partly rely on the work of others, partly describe work in progress and partly gain new insights in the field. This leads to a commutative diagram of F_1-geometries and functors between them that connects all the reviewed theories. We conclude the paper by reviewing the second author's constructions that lead to realization of Tits' idea about Chevalley groups over F_1.

A torified variety is a reduced scheme of finite type over $\Z$ that admits a torification. Toric varieties, split Chevalley schemes and flag varieties are examples of this type of scheme. Given a torified variety whose torification is compatible with an affine open covering, we construct a gadget in the sense of Connes-Consani and an object in the sense of Soulé and show that both are varieties over $\F_1$ in the corresponding notion. Since toric varieties and split Chevalley schemes satisfy the compatibility condition, we shed new light on all examples of varieties over $\F_1$ in the literature so far. Furthermore, we compare Connes-Consani's geometry, Soulé's geometry and Deitmar's geometry, and we discuss to what extent Chevalley groups can be realized as group objects over $\F_1$ in the given categories.

We introduce the notion of quantum duplicates of an (associative, unital) algebra, motivated by the problem of constructing toy-models for quantizations of certain configuration spaces in quantum mechanics. The proposed (algebraic) model relies on the classification of factorization structures with a two-dimensional factor. In the present paper, main properties of this particular kind of structures are determined, and we present a complete description of quantum duplicates of finite set algebras. As an application, we obtain a classification (up to isomorphism) of all the algebras of dimension 4 (over an arbitrary field) that can be factorized as a product of two factors.

Motivated by some results in classical differential geometry, we give a constructive procedure for building up a connection over a (twisted) tensor product of two algebras, starting from connections defined on the factors. The curvature for the product connection is explicitly calculated, and shown to be independent of the choice of the twisting map and the module twisting map used to define the product connection. As a consequence, we obtain that a product of two flat connections is again a flat connection. We show that our constructions also behaves well with respect to bimodule structures, namely being the product of two bimodule connections again a bimodule connection. As an application of our theory, all the product connections on the quantum plane are computed.

This concept provides a unifying framework for various deformed (or twisted) algebras from the literature, such as twisted tensor products of algebras, twisted bialgebras and algebras endowed with Fedosov products. Pseudotwistors appear also in other topics from the literature, e.g. Durdevich's braided quantum groups and ribbon algebras. We also focus on the effect of twistors on the universal first order differential calculus, as well as on lifting twistors to braided twistors on the algebra of universal differential forms.

We introduce and study the definition, main properties and applications of iterated twisted tensor products of algebras, motivated by the problem of defining a suitable representative for the product of spaces in noncommutative geometry. We find conditions for constructing an iterated product of three factors, and prove that they are enough for building an iterated product of any number of factors. As an example of the geometrical aspects of our construction, we show how to construct differential forms and involutions on iterated products starting from the corresponding structures on the factors, and give some examples of algebras that can be described within our theory. We prove a certain result (called ``invariance under twisting'') for a twisted tensor product of two algebras, stating that the twisted tensor product does not change when we apply certain kind of deformation. Under certain conditions, this invariance can be iterated, containing as particular cases a number of independent and previously unrelated results from Hopf algebra theory.
